Hi everyone, another month has flown by and the weather is rapidly warming up. So Spring is just starting. On behalf of the club, I would like to pass on our sincerest condolences to Maurice and Kaye Clark, and also Norm Porter’s family for their recent losses. Our thoughts are with them at this sad time. I would also extend a warm welcome to our new members John Forster, Sharon and Richard Meredith and Roderick Kinghorn who has transferred from Wellington. Reflecting back to last month what a wonderful success Daffodil Day was with over 70 cars on display including Army Jeeps and trucks, even a tracked Bren gun carrier! The success of the day in my mind was not only the raising of over $1,100 for the Cancer Society but the wonderful social side of interacting with many various clubs and the fact that we did not need to charge a fee for entering into the spirit of our show and shine. The meeting back at our clubrooms for a shared lunch was very well received and enjoyed by all, as was the opening of Spares and the Library. My feelings are that we should and must take these opportunities to socialise with the public and other clubs as much as possible. Many thanks are extended to all those who participated and worked so hard to make this event so successful, especially John White and Bob Barton who organised the car park etc. Also, Pete Collins and Rex Williams for their help, plus Linda Barton for organising the lunch. This month’s club meeting was well attended by over 60 people with a wonderful talk and presentation by Wayne Mason mainly on the restoration of steam trains. Many thanks to Bruce Lawrie for arranging this. Our trip to Steam Inc at Paekakariki to view the steam engines was well attended by about 50 people and again was a great outing finishing off with a very social coffee in Waikanae. Another great outing thanks to Bruce Lawrie. This month’s Working Bee is on Saturday morning 14 September and a reminder that we will be having another Working Bee on 28 September to erect the garage, for the Tararua Rodders Club show the following day. The Rodders Club has asked us to supply 6 to 8 cars for their display on Sunday 29 September. It is envisaged that we would try and get one car from each decade for the display. If you are interested in displaying your car please let us know. We are looking for helpers for Sunday 29 September to work on the gates, contact me if you are able to assist in any way. The 2020 Easter Rally is getting very close and it would be nice to get your applications for this in as soon as possible so that the organisers can get an idea of numbers attending. This is a big event and a lot of work is being done behind the scenes, your help and attendance is required. We do not have a speaker for our October meeting, however I thought it might be a good opportunity to have a chat night and so if anyone is doing anything interesting or can think of something to talk about this will be your opportunity to do so. ______________________________________ _________________ 2021 Vero Festival of Historic Motoring At the Club's Annual General Meeting I announced that Tony Haycock has reluctantly stood down as Festival Director due to work commitments which take him overseas for extended periods of time. However because of his enthusiasm and commitment to the Festival Tony will continue to have a role on the organising team and will also become the Management Committee representative on the Committee. In light of this, I am pleased to announce that Greg Terrill has agreed to step into the role of Festival Director. So we still have the same team, but in re-arranged positions. OBITUARY NORMAN WARWICK PORTER 26 April 1934 - 24 August 2019 Norm attended St Patricks College, Wellington where he played a full part in athletics and boxing. His father operated a garage in Wellington so Norm had an early exposure to motor vehicles. His brother subsequently took over the garage. Norm worked for Coopers Seeds and developed his ‘green fingers’ there. He joined the Wellington branch of the VCC and had success in club rallies with his Model A which he kept for most of his life. Roger White a life member of the VCC spoke at Norm’s funeral and recounted the story of Norm’s desire to own a Ferrari. Not many Ferraris were available in NZ at that time, but Norm located a Ferrari in England. This was in pre decimal currency days and you could not buy overseas funds as you can today. The only avenue to acquire Sterling was to buy Sterling Money Orders from the Post Office. Unfortunately, the maximum amount you could buy was 10 pounds per week. Norm was not deterred and gave cash to fellow members of the Wellington Club so they could go into the post offices and buy the 10 pound money orders. He was successful in getting sufficient money orders to buy the Ferrari. He later bought a BMW that he rallied and raced. Meanwhile he tended to Orchids at his Wellington home but later decided to shift to Waikanae with its milder climate. Norm transferred to Horowhenua branch soon after this move. He took work as a landscape gardener while building up the orchid business. His reputation as a hybridiser was worldwide and he received a gold medal for his work from the United States organisation, the first time such an award had been given to a non US person. Groups of Dutch and United States orchid breeders were visitors to Norm’s Waikanae premises. When you spoke of Norm people would say ‘Oh the orchid man’.
Tararua Rodders require help with their bi-annual Hot Rod Show. A Working Bee is to be held to erect the club show garage on Saturday 28 September. Assistance will be required on the gate on 29 September. Further assistance is needed at the conclusion of the show to disassemble and store the garage. CORRESPONDENCE: Winton noted that he had emailed out to members the power point presentation of rebranding of the club and also how the Horowhenua branch membership had increased compared to neighbouring branches. MATTERS ARISING: None TREASURER’S REPORT: Jackie read out the amounts held in our accounts. Her report was received. Jackie/Pete Collins. CLUB CAPTAIN’S REPORT: Great turnout for Daffodil show and shine. Over $1000 was raised. We swamped the car park. Our next run is to Steam Inc. and then to a café for afternoon tea. Spares are organising a run to the Wairarapa VCC Spares. See Spark for details. The Tararua Hot Rod people need our help on the gate at their show. We also need help to put our garage up at their show. We are organising a run to Ross Church’s premises to see what cars he has for sale. He will talk about them. He is also organising a quiz to take part in. It involves a wide range of questions. Bruce advised this run will also be of interest to women. Tararua Trundle entry is free. SPARES: Quiet in Spares. The working bee is now on Saturday 14 Sept. The Spares will be open when the Hot Rod show is on, but will not be open when the Manawatu swap meet is on. GENERAL BUSINESS: At the Tararua Hot Rod show we are putting a collection of cars from each decade on display. Chris Clark wants to put a car in a crate to show how cars came to this country. A working bee will be held on the 28th September so that we can put up the garage over at the show. We need trailers and utes to help take the stuff over there. We have a supply of new blue club banners to put on your car. Michael gave a report about the AGM - see in Spark. SPEAKER: Wayne Mason gave a very interesting insight as to how you restore a steam train. The meeting closed at 9.15 pm.
AGM OF NZ VINTAGE CAR CLUB HELD IN GREYMOUTH 17 AUGUST 2019 I attended as the Horowhenua Branch delegate and report as follows. The Executive Committee met from 7.30pm to 9pm on the Friday night. On the Saturday morning the AGM was held finishing at 2.50pm. The Executive Committee meeting then continued. Annual accounts were passed and show a surplus of $100,000 included interest received and Vero commission of $77,000 resulting in an operating surplus of some $23,000. This latter figure was in turn boosted by an $18,000 refund of the 2016 Rally expenses so after stripping out these items the operating surplus was just under $5000. Beaded Wheels magazine saw a reduction in bookstore sales and non member subscribers. This is likely to continue as most people under 50 years of age get their information from online sources. It is intended to have past issues placed on the website which is a pleasing development. Work is being done to have an online membership application form and this will be circulated to Branches for their input. Facebook page is showing good growth with 1561 followers in June. One photo from the Irishman Rally achieved a reach of 8253 people. We do need to visit the club facebook page and provide interesting photos of our vehicles to National Office. The facebook page also provides an avenue for the public seeking assistance from the club. A recent example was from owners of a 1957 Mercedes who were asked to get a letter from the classic car club confirming the flash rate of the indicators was correct as they failed a WOF because the flash rate was held to be too slow. This is an important service we can offer to prospective members. Archives Memorabilia from the Christchurch Corsair Club covering the period 1930 to the 1990’s has been given to archives. Mention was made of the wealth of material contained in ‘Touro 500Gb hard drive’ video that was sent to branches in 2015. There have been requests for contact information re people with expertise in certain models of vehicles and Archives is seeking to establish a database of such people. New Logo Updating our image is underway with work being done on a new logo with a tag such as ’driving our history’. The Executive Committee gave approval for further work. Branches will be circulated for their comments with a view to a decision being made at the March Executive Committee meeting in 2020. Andy Anderson a founding member of the club and due for his 70 year badge was present at the meeting and spoke of the need to focus on young people and avoid becoming an ’old man’s club’. The young want a challenge and sense of adventure. The founders of the club were the boy racers of the day. There was a remit from the Bay of Plenty branch requesting a name change. This was unsuccessful.
A remit regarding proposed notices of motion was passed. This was to provide for the Executive Committee to have an informed discussion on the merits of the proposed notice before being accepted as a formal notice to be presented at the AGM. The Federation of Motoring Clubs has some 80 members including the VCC. Little progress is being made in seeking 12 month WOF’s for historic vehicles. The NZTA has been gathering data on road fatalities and serious crashes since 1980. An analysis shows pre 1970 vehicles involved in deaths and serious injuries number about 250 per year and this increases to over 500 if pre 1975 vehicles are included and around 1150 if pre 1980 vehicles are included. FIVA. Federation of International Vehicle Associations. Rod Brayshaw is our representative on this body. FIVA operates classicpartsforyou.com which gives links to parts, old timer workshops and vintage car appraisals. Membership of FIVA is very important to us as we can observe trends that could impact on our continued use of our historic vehicles. The 3 issues are congestion, pollution and road safety. A question asked by the FIVA president is, will we still be able to drive in 20, 30 or 50 years? Not will be allowed to drive but, with the advent of autonomous vehicles will drivers become historic like steam locomotives and traction engine drivers. Health and Safety Checklist. Will be mandatory for national rallies and should be used for other rallies. A Power Point presentation will be sent to Branches. Daffodil Day. Raised $100,000 for Cancer Society in 2 years. Main aim is to promote the VCC in the eyes of the public. International Festival. No celebrity speaker unless sponsored. Merchandise will be sold via the application form. There is an opportunity for a branch to take merchandise on and make some money. National Speed Steward. Tony Haycock reported that there are 182 Historic Racing Licences issued and there were no injuries or major damage to vehicles during the year. The intention is to introduce a written test for the issuance of HRL’s based on the regulations in the Branch Manual. Two matters were raised with the Historic Commission of Motorsport NZ. First to run early Formula vee cars on the track and second to extend the eligibility date to 1965 for unmodified cars. The lack of entries at Hampton Downs and Taupo could see the vintage races withdrawn. LVVTA. The Low Volume Vehicle Technical Association Committee of 9 people from an automotive background. Adjudicate on VIC cards. Is one area the NZTA are happy with and they refer cases back to us as do the police on occasions. We are subject to audit by NZTA. Are some problems with replicas especially where there is no provenance and this applies to vehicles being restored. Would be wise to involve your local VIC member early on in the restoration. Brucie’s Burblings What a great turnout for the Daffodil Car Show at Levin. In all over 70 vehicles were on show almost swamping our appointed section of the New World car park. We assisted the local branch of the Cancer Society to raise over $1,100 on the day. This was a great chance to show off our vehicles to the public, our own fellow members, and interact with other car clubs. Thanks to John and Bob for organising the event, New World for the venue and those who came back to the clubrooms for a relaxed shared lunch that nicely rounded off the day. October 12
Run from Otaki to Paraparaumu ending up at Auto Classics. Ross is providing some entertainment. This run is not just for the blokes. Then off to another nearby Cafe for refreshments and then home. Start point and time announced at next club night. This will be an afternoon event.

If you have not been on a rally or run recently the short runs to the southern end of the district may be of interest. They don’t take all day and may let you experience something you have not done before. My plan is to move away slightly from just car things and include the ladies more. After all, they make up 50% of New Zealand’s Driver’s and a reasonable proportion of our club.

This was the 3rd year we have held this and this was the best yet! Cancer Society collected $1,103, up on last year and they are quite happy. As for our lot, Bob, Rex, Pete and I got there at 8 30 am to set up. The New World Manageress made us most welcome and I’m assured their coffee shop did a roaring trade! As we set up the cars started arriving and it wasn’t long before we ran out of room. We packed them in double column, then the spill over went to Bad Boyz Pub carpark adjacent. Some great cars were present, including two EV Nissans, with the owners answering all the questions. Some of the Military Vehicle Collectors turned up, one in a tracked Bren Gun Carrier from WWII. I was a bit concerned his tracks would chew up the tar seal, but he took it gently. They wanted to bring their replica WWII guns with the vehicles too, but I managed to persuade them to leave them at home! A visit from the Armed Offenders Squad we don’t need! We retired to our clubrooms for a late lunch, with a few interested owners along and we signed up three new members on the spot! Great! It was quite surprising to see the level of interest from the public. As a bonus, the Horowhenua Chronicle ran a full-page news item on this just prior to the event. There were good photos, so good club publicity like this you cannot buy! A big fat thank you to all our guys and gals for participating and making this a success! Thanks.

A Little Story From the Past I came to live in Levin in 1973. With me, I ferried all my vintage bits and household goods from Dannevirke in a 1949 Austin truck. I had purchased it for the purpose. I was stopped carrying the last load. Load number 14! This was just Collection of fire engine parts from Marton outside Levin by the local traffic cop. He weighed the Austin and looked at the paper work for the truck. He found that I was 3 hundredweight (cwt) over and the truck had a farmer’s license. This only applies up to 50 miles from the farm! I got away with this as I had two rural residential addresses, having just purchased the present property in Levin. However my load consisted of many Model A and T parts, I had quite a job trying to convince the officer that it consisted of spares for my farm vehicle. I finally got away with it, but had to accept a warning. At this stage I was in the middle of restoring the original Woodville Ford Model T Fire Engine. The parts I had were purchased from the Fletcher family in Marton. They had purchased the remains as spares for their own T truck on their farm. The Manawatu Standard got a hold of this story! They printed that I was restoring the fire engine and stated I would have it finished for the Centenary! In six weeks time! What a challenge! Manawatu Standard photo Well, I mentioned this to some of accompanying the story the locals who I had only just met, being new to Levin. Help was offered immediately. Bill Mudge a local dairy farmer and carpenter came every night after milking. He was in my shed helping Bill ‘Hoss’ Olsen, Model T expert and Manawatu club
member. Ian Bonney from Palmerston North and another Levin resident, Craig Lagor who was an apprentice at the Woodville Garage where it was serviced, came out to help. As recorded in the Centenary book, the T was driven on the parade by one of the original drivers. He took the day out from the rest home for the drive.

Most of the original parts were found over the next few years and it was re-restored correctly. The T in this same condition now lives in the Woodville Museum. During its time in Levin the T was used regularly at parades, picnics and club events. One particular event stands out. Stuart Tantrum and I were good friends and shared many of the same interests. Stuart was also interested in Model T’s and owned at one stage the Model TT that our member Bernard Scott now has. His main interest really was aeroplanes. At that time or soon after I restored the fire engine, he built a Royal Aircraft Sopwith SE5A replica in his shed in Kennedy Drive. After test flying etcetera, over a cup of tea we decided that we would have a race! It would be between his SE5A and my Model T to Dannevirke to catch up with another enthusiast Colin Nelson. A suitable handicap was set and a date for the event was agreed. I can’t remember who won! However we had a great day and as per the photo, Colin’s truck, my TT and Stuart’s SE5A are shown on the Dannevirke Airfield.

Dear Editor of Spark Horowhenua Branch I have sent you a photo of my bonnet. I had an oops and wrote the other one off! I had this spare one in the shed. It was covered in paint that someone had hand brushed on. It was a mess. I took it to Warren Leslie Horowhenua member at Metal Immersions in Tawa. This is how it came out. It is just like a new one. Warren wants members of Horowhenua to know that he will give 25 percent discount on any work you take to him. He does a great job. Can you please put something in Spark? Cheers Winton

______________________________________ _________________ The August Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run August is often the month when we go to Chocolate Fish for a yummy lunch then take the short drive to the Old Time Cinema in Lyall Bay. The cafe always treats us well with tables laid up in the warm back room and this year, a chocolate fish for everyone as we leave. Cass, the owner of the cinema, had delved into his archives and started the show with some old advertisements, quite hilarious compared to today’s. Then two real treats, first an old film showing the refurbishment of hundreds of American Army trucks and jeeps in Gracefield which came from Guadalcanal. The second, a film showing the origin of the Courtesy Club, shot in Wellington. While a Wellingtonian was showing an Australian family around the city, a veteran Wolseley driven by Len Southward drove by. It was noted that the old car was shown more courtesy by other drivers than was usual for contemporary vehicles. So the Courtesy Club was formed and attracted all sorts of vehicles and their drivers, from veteran to modern. Both the VCC and Lions members joined in. (Looking at some driving today, perhaps we need to start another Courtesy Club!) The main feature, The Gumball Rally, entertained everyone hugely. Lots of laughter as the hapless participants destroyed their rides and evaded the cops crossing the States from New York to LA. And the sun shone all day!

With change comes progress and so the new Wairarapa Branch Committee has changed their spares department opening hours from a Tuesday to the third Sunday of every month from 9.30 to 12 noon. Horowhenua spares department is planning a visit to Carterton on September 15 to their spares shed. We would like to invite our members to join us. We will be leaving the clubrooms at 8.30am. The plan is to car pool and lunch will be at a pub on the way home, with cars full of treasures! Just a heads up to everyone, the Manawatu Swap Meet is on the weekend of the October working bee. Spares will be closed over that weekend of the Swap Meet. The afternoon of the Daffodil Rally was a busy one for spares with members from three clubs taking the time for a look. Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
Wednesday 25th September 2019 Visit to Rick Goodman of Goodman Contracting Limited Waikanae Rick is our guest speaker and will be followed (weather permitting) by a visit to view the Goodman earth moving vehicles and equipment at their Waikanae Plant. Rick Goodman, an Honours Graduate of the University of Life, a man of distinction, a storyteller with a depth of experience and knowledge will speak to us of railway salvage through to earth works and a number of subjects inbetween. Together with his entertaining and sometimes hilarious situations he has found himself in over the years, Rick mentions that he has no idea what he is going to talk about until he begins to speak. He also enjoys interaction with his audience. So, ladies, in addition to men’s stuff, there is also something for you to be involved in.
