September Club Run. Whangarei Railway Station
Chairman’s Comment Hello to all Club Members from your Chairman. To keep you up to date with what’s going on with your club committee it is mostly business as usual with one item that we are looking very closely at. The Kiwi North Trust Board have given us a bit to think about. When the trust was set up many years ago, there were lease agreements agreed with each of the clubs as they came on to the park. However they were quite open and didn’t really safeguard our existence on the park. Every year the trust sends us a bill for our rental and we pay it and carry on. One of the trustees on the Kiwi North Board has taken upon himself to write up a new agreement called the Memorandum of Participation setting out the parameters for all clubs to exist on the park and also a separate lease agreement for each I ndividual club to negotiate with the board. They wanted us to accept it by the end of September but we have replied this is insufficient time and we will be looking at it very seriously before accepting anything. Our committee looked at it and I discussed it with some of the other clubs with the result that Dick Thorburn from the Vintage Machinery Club and myself from the NVCC called a meeting of all the clubs at the NVCC clubrooms to discuss this. It was a good meeting with the clubs well represented as well as our two club representatives on the Board. Although on the whole the document is needed to ensure continued occupation on the park under a more formal basis, it appears to be biased towards Kiwi North. We went through the document line by line and all agreed that it was biased towards Kiwi North and we altered some of the wording to make it fair to all parties. At this time the revised document has been sent back to all of the clubs for their comments. At this time your committee is still discussing this and how we will proceed. The Far North Tour is coming up at the beginning of November so if you haven’t got your entry in then think about it. Club members have already received a separate email regarding this important event so support your club and take part. Entries don’t close until October 17th but please don’t leave it to the last moment as late entries makes the process difficult. Club runs have been getting more support and the next one promises to be a great run as well. Why have your club vehicle sitting in the shed unused. Club Captains Report Hi Members Not a lot this month winter has nearly gone and spring has sprung. Unfortunately I missed Ans breakfast run as I had the flue but Marion and Sandra showed the flag. They enjoyed the day well patronised by Club Members. Octobers Club run [ Matakohe area] has been set by Arthur Jenkins. Leaves from the Club rooms at 10 -00 am on Sunday 13th. Take own lunch etc. There are 2 Shed visits. This is the first event Arthur has done, so please support him. Re. Far North Tour Cowleys Hire is again sponsoring us. Cowleys for their Machinery needs.
It would be great if Club Members use
Marion and I missed the Dargaville Wednesday run but several Whangarei members attended and had a good time. These are always good value and well worth attending. I urge Northland Members to support the Far North Tour this year even if you only do the run. Over the last few years a common comment has been “what is wrong with Northland Members that they don’t support this event”? It is a premier run and one of the best in new Zealand! Cheers Keith.

This month I’d like to highlight the VIC (Vehicle Identity Card), this is intended for identification and authenticity purposes. The application forms have been updated. When completing these forms ensure that you have the most up to date ones. All questions must be answered or noted “not applicable”. Check that the photo is the correct size. You will need a VIC if you’re entering a National Rally, not for the Monthly club runs. We now have an AED defibrillator onsite. The defibrillator is located on the wall by the entry to the KIWI House. (Gate 2) Next time when you have the time go and have a look and familiarise with the location and the procedure you need to follow. YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN YOU MAY NEED IT. If you’re in the park and have an emergency you can ring 4389630 and the KIWI HOUSE staff will bring the defibrillator to you. Give them clear directions. Austin Flying A Club The Austin Flying A Car Club is holding its 11th National Rally in Rotorua on the 23rd - 26th October 2020 and we wish to invite any of your Austin Owners to join us. I have their flyer, I’ll print it for the club rooms and sent a copy to Claudia. Otherwise sent an email to me (see above) and I will forward it to you. Ans.
Spares Report The spares team have been busy for the last couple of months tidying up in the spares shed. There is always things to do organizing our parts to make them more easily accessible. We have purchase a new hand trolley to save wear and tear on us old guys with lifting and moving heavy items. Although we still have a large heavy trolley which was made years ago by previous spares coordinator, Dave Carter, this is too big to get through the aisles in the bottom shed. Bruce Cosson recently purchased a very tidy 30's Austin which came with a trailer load of spares. Bruce figured that he will never use all of these so has donated them to the club. Among them are various panel parts which although have some rust are complete with windows and mechanisms so are useful source of parts. Also there are gearbox parts and engine parts. Bruce Young has kindly donated an unwanted arc welder to the spares which we were fortunate enough to sell straight away to another member. Our thanks to both Bruce's for their generous donations. Sales have been quite steady over the winter which is a bit unusual as they generally slow down over the colder months. Over the coming months we will work in the Vehicle shed on the club vehicles. Some of these still need servicing but none have been running for a while so we will get onto that. Cheers Lawrence
Library Report Thanks due to Lou, Peter and Ans for the muscle, ideas, fun and laughter in the library – who knew that revamping could be such fun! Loads of shelves have been secured to the walls, including the display cabinet Ans will make use of as a display for the Shop Goods initially (Just behind the opened door to the Library). The freezer has been removed to the Store Room where it can still be used if required as it still can be left turned on even when the main switch is turned off. We continue to monitor the dampness and mould in the Library and have put the purchase of more vents on hold. The huge Magazine collection across the back wall has not been touched yet – maybe a project for later. The way the Team is going we will soon be ready to start on the sorting, arranging, mending, grouping and displaying of the Books. Start spreading the word and lets see how many skilled people we have in the Club. Leonora

ART DECO WEEKEND 2020 A SPECIAL INVITATION FROM HBVCC For 2020 the annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a touring run plus a picnic lunch at a great lunch venue. On Saturday we will have the morning tea and car show and popular choice at the HBVCC clubrooms, and the Gatsby picnic in the afternoon. There are many other ADT events to choose from on Friday and Saturday nights. Come and join the other 180 plus club eligible vehicles we expect to enter the 2020 Event. Go to the HBVCC website for an Entry Form. (www.hbvcc.org.nz). Entry forms for 2020 are available now. Accommodation in Napier is already filling up for Art Deco Weekend so book now to avoid disappointment. Club Run 8th September Hi All, Just a few words about the September “run” while it’s still fresh in my experience box. The weather forecast was horrible for quite a few days regarding this Sunday, but what can you do? Just hope for the best, and that’s how it turned out to be. Must say that when we met at the Kensington car park the main topic was: Did you see the lightning this morning? But first we had to start the day with breakfast at the “James Homestead” in Kamo. I cheated a little bit so I did have some breakfast at home before we left, and therefore I did treat the bacon and eggs more like a social get together rather than a feeding exercise. More than 20 people did join us at this breakfast, and I must say it was pretty pleasant going. After the breakfast more people did join the group ready to depart for the Man’s Shed in Whangarei’s old train station. The run was not a run with questions and surprises, but only a scenic route to go from A to B. Therefore no winners, but also no losers. The end destination was the old Whangarei train station. A piece of old Whangarei tucked away where people used to hop on a train to go somewhere maybe very special on that day, you can compare it with boarding a plane today, even if this becomes a kind of routine for some people. I can remember this building being in a poor condition, so it was good to see as it would have looked in its glory days. We were welcomed by a team of the man’s shed volunteers, who went to great and pleasant length to explain the history, presence and future of this building. I don’t know about other people, but coming from Holland where travelling by train is at some stage in your live is a daily routine, my thoughts drifted quit a few years back when I was standing on this Whangarei platform expecting a train to arrive. That moment lasted only a few seconds, but enough to recall buzzing stations with tens of trains or local stations with just one (if lucky). And then I thought about all those thousands of stations worldwide and millions of kilometres of tracks to make this type of transport happen. Makes you wonder why a few thousand charging stations and some more reliable batteries will stop the next generation of transport. Or does it? As this was not a visit to another car related end station, it does show a lot of similarities between people who like restoring the past, share it and enjoy it. All in all a relaxed social day and thanks to Ans and the volunteers from the Men’s shed. Regards Lou Schoenmaekers.
Dargaville Doings
Our 15th Mid-week Birthday Run started at Selwyn Park for a change, on a fine but cold morning. The club flag was flying bravely on the roadside amidst local body candidate’s hoardings – maybe they were the reason only about four people saw the flag!! After the briefing by Claudia and a chat from Ans, instructions were handed out to the 15 navigators along with chocolate bars to keep sweet on the gravel back roads ahead. The roads over the hills to the north of Ruawai, and Ararua provided excellent views of the countryside and the Kaipara harbour in the distance. Just before Maungaturoto, we had the opportunity to see the nearly completed restoration of a 1975 Datsun 120Y SSS, one of only 3 in New Zealand. Terry has done a very good job, with the engine and gearbox ready to reassemble back in the car. The lunch venue was The Sitting Duck Café where people could choose from the menu. Josie and her daughters made a huge chocolate birthday cake which was cut by our two nonagenarian members, Ross and Stuart. The next stop was to The Den, an Op shop supporting the build of the Dementia Unit at the local Rest Home, where Alby Paton told us about the fundraising that has taken place, and showed us the plans for the building. Some found the illusive item they had been looking for and we gave Alby a small donation. Then it was a tour of the new subdivisions and houses, not seen from the main road. Roll on year 16! Rob & Ngaire are looking forward to joining Paul Collin’s NZ tour next week. Local members have been invited to join the rally people for dinner at the Machinery Club rooms on Thursday 26 th. Six members will take their cars for display at Matakohe Museum for their annual Open Day on 5 th October. The October mid-week run will start at the usual place - Boating Club Car Park on Wednesday 16th at 1pm. Bill has two places of interest to visit. Please bring your own afternoon tea and chairs. MotorCycle Report After last month’s false start the weather behaved itself to provide ideal conditions for biking. 11 bikes turned out in total (3 AJS, 1 Motor Guzzi , 1 Harley Davidson, 2 Hondas, 1 Norton & 3 Triumphs including two pillion passengers. After some discussion and the revelation that Graham’s Norton had a malfunctioning rear brake we decided to follow him to his home just off Three Mile Bush road so that he could change bikes. Robert & Lorraine on their AJS 350cc led the way and at the second set of traffic lights in the town basin police sirens started wailing, but with helmets on it’s hard to know exactly where the noise was coming from or going too. Luckily they weren’t interested in us. We proceeded up through Tikipunga and across to Kamo and on to Grahams. Going up Three Mile Bush road I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many people on their drive-on mowers working their road sides before, a sight to behold. Unfortunately Graham’s late model Triumph didn’t want to start, just shows you ‘electric starts’ aren’t fool proof like the old kick start. Despite having battery power and being pushed up and down the drive it just wouldn’t start. Graham would meet up with us at Poroti. We proceeded out to Ruatangata and on toward Pipiwai turning off onto Wright Road (a new strip of recently tar sealed road), Three-quarters of the way down this stretch of road we came to an line halt behind Cam’s Harley Davidson. After a moment or two and a few kicks it spluttered back into life and we were off toward Titoki. A short run down SH13 saw us arrive at the Poroti Pub for a drink and natter. Cam said he’d run out of petrol and had to switch over to his reserve hence the stop. Most bikes give you some indication when you’re running short of petrol but Cam’s just dies without warning. The next event of interest is the Rubber Duckie Rally at New Plymouth on the 20th September. We have at least three entrants so far. Cam has just forwarded an entry form for a run in the South Waikato area on the 10th of October, if anyone is interested. The Auckland Rally is set down for the 15-16th Nov. More details to come in due course. The motorcycle trailer is available to anyone who needs to move bikes. Its currently located on Abbey Caves Road. Just give us a ring 094371969 if you’re interested.
