Chairman’s Comments Well your new committee has been busy getting ready and organised for this year’s new and regular events for you all to enjoy. We are working on the Far North Tour and keeping our fingers crossed that we can go ahead with this, Trevor and Lynora together with Allan and Megan are working on this. It is now time to send in the entry forms, and if you’re staying in Kerikeri book your accommodation. Next month there will be a slight change to the coffee morning. We had from the Electoral Roll Commission a 10-day prepaid booking for this year’s election, but due to Covid 19 this had to be moved to October and now interferes with the coffee morning. So we have decided to go ahead with an ALTERNATIVE COFFEE MORNING in the truck shed. You can still bring a plate but we can not warm food up on the day. I hope to have some tables set up from where we can serve the coffee/tea and finger food. You will find in this issue also the up dated version of the Office Bearers of this year; we have been lucky to find Peter Lovatt together with Arthur Jenkins and Roger Billings to look after the hall hire and cleaning which is a great help and thank you all for that. We also have managed to find some of the Wednesday people willing to look into the maintenance of the building if required. They will report back to the next committee meeting. Last month we had some corrugated iron replaced of the storage room. Thanks Dennis to bring the necessary materials to get the job done, Lou was the goffer, I think. We still need to look what needs doing to the ceiling and walls in the storage room. We also had the plumber in to replace an inlet valve for the hot water cylinder. So, no more water wastage. Our first excursion for this year to the Dargaville Aerodrome was a great success, we left Whangarei with 13 cars and a big group of locals were waiting for us in Dargaville, we all lined the cars up and had a lovely time catching up with everyone and watched the planes coming and going. I think we were all happy to be out and about on this beautiful September day. The lunch was enjoyed outside mostly, there was plenty of room for us all to spread out and chat with one and another. We had one brave member going up in the sky in the Dargaville Aero Club’s Gyrocopter piloted by Steven Jeffery. I myself did not feel that courages - maybe another time. In the same week on the Wednesday Lou and had signed our self’s up to go on the 16th birthday run from the Dargaville group. We left early for the trip to meet up at the Boating Club in Dargaville. I did not count the cars when we left for Opononi but we had at least 4 Whangarei cars and 1 from Waipu. Arriving in Opononi we visited a local museum, and then on to the home from one of our members for lunch. Thank you, Janice and Michael, for opening your lovely home to us, it was an enjoyable day and your granddaughters’ lunch was amazing. The committee also got together and started the work on the constitution. We received this last year from the National office as a draft, followed by a revised one earlier this year. Ron had spent some of his holiday in January working on it to make it fit for our Branch, with the current Rules of the NVCC incorporated into the drafted version from National Office. Due to Covid 19 we have only now got back again to finish this task. Ron will probably take the lead on this as he has done a lot of the prep work. We have now got a draft the committee is happy with and Ray is typing it up. We will soon get it back for another scrutiny. Then we will be looking at finding a date to get a Special General Meeting organized. We will keep you in the loop of how we are getting on with this. Ans Schoenmaekers Chairman
Whangarei A&P Show We have had an invitation from the Whangarei A&P Show that will take place on 5th of December this year. As a special display they like us to show our vehicles on the day. It is their 140th Show and like us to be involved in showing the past as part of the 140th celebrations. They have room to accommodate for 50 to 100 vehicles. We have at this stage 13 vehicle signed up so if you like to participate let me know and I put you on the list. (vcc.northland@gmail.com or phone 09 434 6802) The A&P Show Society will provide 2 tickets per car to get in and donate $250 to our branch for the effort. The committee has decided that the money can be donated by us to a charity.
Secretary’s scribblings Hello everyone, I hope you have all had a great month and are enjoying this slightly drier, warmer weather. We finally got out on a run to Dargaville a couple of weeks back and that was very enjoyable as there was a good turnout with lots to see with the comings and goings at the airfield. We will be away during October but are looking forward to the Far North Tour in November. As a committee we have been working on various matters such as revising the constitution, and sorting out improved heating for the hall, but in general there are no major issues to contend with. The committee is working well as a team and we look forward longer term to trying to improve membership and introduce different types of activities to provide variety. We are fortunate to have an active band of volunteers assisting with parts, hall management and the necessary evils of paperwork, and long may that continue. Driving around over the past week I have seen a lot more old cars and motorcycles out on the road and if this weather continues it should get even busier. Daylight Saving Friday Night Dinner
Starting again at the Clubrooms on Friday the 30th October at 5pm onward. As usual the barbecue will be going and the club will supply the sausages. Or bring takeaways, a home cooked dinner (Microwave available) and your drinks plus a salad to share. Hope you can join us and catch up with your fellow club members.
Dargaville Doings Greetings from the Westside. We held our September meeting with all the protocols of Covid restrictions but no supper. However we welcomed a prospective member, Richard Gent and his partner, Darlene Lang. On the 16th, appropriate, as it was the 16th Midweek Birthday Rally, we journeyed to Hokianga through the Kauri Forest. Because we were still in Level 2, it was decided not to include a visit to a private collection, but instead a visit to the Hokianga Museum. Janice and Micheal Brenstrum hosted us at their home for lunch, which was expertly catered by their grand-daughter, Yvette. We gathered on their deck which gave us a wonderful view of the Hokianga Harbour and entry. After lunch, Janice showed some videos of their holiday in Alaska. Huge salmon and lots of grizzly bears. Dargaville Wings and Wheels Saturday morning was a stunner, not a cloud in the sky - perfect for an awesome drive to Dargaville and to see the planes arrive for the Fly In. The chilly southerly wind didn't put anyone off and 23 vehicles lined up at the aerodrome. The aero club had some of their members “eggbeater” aircraft which looked like a cross between a motorcycle and a helicopter. Despite not looking like they had any visible means of support they actually flew quite well - as Doug Grant was to bravely find out. Speaking of motorbikes, VCC club member Brian Taylor had his plane on display - the artwork on the side attracting lots of comments and giggles. A biplane flew in from Kaipara Flats and soon had an enthusiastic crowd around it. We sat in the lee of the Aero Clubrooms and had our lunch. Everyone agreed that it was a great day and there have been many comments that we must repeat it again in the future. ED.

ART DECO FESTIVAL 2021 THE VETERANS ARE COMING Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for Art Deco 2021 from February 18th -21st. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd In 2021 the Featured Group will be Veteran Motor Vehicles (all will be over 100 years old). We are expecting 50 plus Veterans thus year and already have 25 Veteran entries as at 10 September. Cars, commercials, motorcycles, high-wheelers, steam , electric and petrol. Veterans entered already include an 1895 Velo Benz, 1903/4 Oldsmobiles (3), De Dion, Calcott, Hupmobile, GWK, Dodge (3), Sears, L’etoile, Darracq (2) , Cadillac , Mitchell, Holly, Briscoe, New Pick and 5 Model T Fords. 2021 will be the 90th anniversary of the 1931 Napier Earthquake. We want to get as many EQ survivor cars to attend the 2021 AD Festival as possible. A commemorative banner or similar will be presented to all qualifying vehicles. To qualify your vehicle must have been in Napier or Hastings at the time of the EQ. Please contact me if you have such a vehicle or know someone who has. The same applies if you own or know of any First Response Vehicles that may have been present during the EQ. (eg Ambulance, Fire Engine, Police, Military). For 2021 the main annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a touring run plus a picnic lunch at a great lunch venue. On Saturday we will have the morning tea and car show and popular choice at the HBVCC clubrooms, followed by the grand parade. Sunday events include breakfast at the HBVCC clubrooms and the Gatsby picnic in the afternoon. There are many other events offered by Art Deco Trust on the Friday and Saturday nights. Come and join the other 180 plus club eligible vehicles we expect to enter the 2021 Event. If you are entering a Veteran there are special additional events for you on the Wednesday and Thursday of Art Deco Week. If you plan to attend these please plan to arrive in Napier on the Tuesday. Otherwise we suggest you plan to arrive in Napier on Thursday 20th so you can attend the Dinner at the Clubrooms that evening. We have prizes for the best dressed couples again this year. Dinner tickets are limited so be in quick. Go to the HBVCC website for an Entry Form. (www.hbvcc.org.nz). Entry forms for 2021 are available now. DUNNY RUN
SATURDAY 28th NOVEMBER 2020 In order to avoid clashing with the Kerikeri run/ walk event traffic we have moved over a bit. As this is an event we share with our folks from Whangarei and Dargaville, we need to offer a bit more than a saunter down the road to a cafĂŠ. SO, as usual we will meet in KAWAKAWA by 10.30 to start at 11.00. If we are lucky the new Hundertwasser complex in Kawakawa will be open for a visit. Our run will be out East, featuring some gravel roads, great vistas and history. We plan to visit a winery and luncheon at the restaurant which should prove memorable. For those who do not want to lunch out a picnic lunch is suggested but of course, is weather controlled. Closer to the time we will pass on final details which will require committed lunch bookings. Targa VCC Time Trial 2021. Hi Everyone - Great News! 1. Dates for 2021 - 25th to 30th October: Dates for the 2021 Targa VCC time trials, (in conjunction with the main Targa NZ event), start with Documentation Labour Day Monday 25th October and finish Saturday 30th October 2021. Our full time trial event will be over 5 days (Tuesday to Saturday), and we'll also offer a 2 day time trial for the last 2 days, (Friday/Saturday), to enable those who can't join us for the full event to enter for the last 2 days, (as we tried to do this year, but all cancelled due to Covid-19). The route is yet to be finalised, but heads up it will be central North Island, with a good chance it may start in Taranaki and finish in the Hawkes Bay. Hopefully this will enable easier travel plans for most of us, especially those coming up from the South Island. As we've done previously, our VCC time trial group will most likely get together on the afternoon of Sunday 24th October for our own meet & greet, afternoon tea, Scrutineering, RallySafe installation etc. (Subject to Covid-19 etc Targa may also run a small event in April/May 2021, but it's not practical to include a VCC time trial component in that event).
