Chairmams Report When this arrives in your mailbox Christmas is already over and done with for another year, and a new year is on the horizon for us all. I’m hoping that we don’t have to deal with another one like last year. We are all over a year like that. So, I will try and get some fun into the first month of the new year and point out a few fun things to do in this Holiday period - if you are at a loss of what to do. Saturday the 16th of January the A&P Show in Kaikohe. Royal Agricultural Society » Shows/Events (ras.org.nz) We are leaving from Kiwi North Gate 2 at 8.30AM. A representative of the Kaikohe A&P Show has invited us to come and display our cars at their Show. So, if you like to go for a day out this might be something for you. I have seen the booklet for the event entry’s and it looks like a good old fashion country show with not only the usual animals and wood chopping but also competitions in: baking, growing fruit and veg. preserving, there were also kids’ competitions in this and spinning, knitting and floral art in the halls. So, something to see for young, old, male and female, I guess. Showgrounds are on the corner of Ngawha Springs Road & State Highway 12 starting at 9am so, you have to make sure you’re there in time to park up. The Classic Car Club is also having a group going over for the day. Then there is the AUCTION of Roy and Gay London on the 30th of January 2021 it is at their property at 1734 Tinopai Road. Further details from mid-January on the website www.abauctions.co.nz I have spoken to people going there and making it a day trip with picnic and all. The last activity is on Sunday the 31st of January at KIWI North from 10 till 3 they run the Medieval Madness. This is a family day of medieval activities food and fun. Get the kids/grandkids and your self-dressed up in the medieval garb outfit and join in with the fun. We have in our clubrooms people fencing for young and old to watch and have a go. Lou and I will open the Truck Shed for people to show our great collection of vehicles. Well, that is me for another month see you all again sometime in the new year. Dargaville Doings It was very pleasing to see 9 cars on display and 2 members driving in this year’s Dargaville Christmas parade. Two locals joined the good display of vintage and classic cars at the Whangarei A&P Show, on the same day. Dargaville group finished the year of Covid with a great get-together at the Aero Club. All varieties of take-away meals were consumed, before George called us to order for a meeting. The calendar of duties has been decided (mostly) and the trophies were awarded. Club Persons of the Year – Sue & Dave Dreadon. (Regular meeting attendees travelling long distance over gravel roads, and always offering to help and set runs.) Mechanic of the Year cars)

Then the games began. Claudia finally found 4 teams who had a round of 4 different tasks. Feely Bag, Memory Test, Numbers, Nuts and Bolts. Next it was time for everyone to join in. Heads and tails, roll a penny along the floor to hit the bottle of wine, and a car race – see photos. Grand finale – dessert, and what a selection to behold. Many thanks to Von, who always works her magic in the kitchen clean-up. So, what was in the “Feely Bag”? The NW (Arapohue) A&P Show is at the Showgrounds, Mititai Road on Saturday, 13th February. The committee has asked for vintage cars to be on display at 10am, same place as last year. Free entry for driver only. A cup and prizes will be awarded for Best Presented Car and Peoples’ Choice. First meeting for the 2021 will be February Wednesday 10th, 7.30pm at the NW Aero Club. Claudia.

Motorcycle Report Christmas Motor Cycle Run by Lofty. Some weeks ago Peter rang me as discussed the fact we usually had a long run , lunch and look in combined in the days activities. He knew of a collection north of Waipapa that might be worth a visit. Having arranged it and offering to act as backup with the clubs trailer in case of breakdowns and the weather being settled, all was set for an enjoyable run. Some of the participants elected to have breakfast with their wives at the town basin with a 9.30 scheduled start. Peter supplied excellent written instructions for the 150 mile run. Twelve bikes started out including 3 modern bikes and the exceptionally rare site of 3 HRD Vincents. AMC were represented by 2 AJS’s and a Matchless while other marques included BSA, Norton, Moto Guzzi and Triumph. There were also two pillion passengers and Donna Nobilo in the 1935 Dodge Coupe. Everyone got away at about 9.45 with regrouping at Maungtapere, Parakao and Kaikohe before stopping for lunch at the Redwoods cafe and Garden centre north of Waipapa. Extra bikes joined the group along the way and one came up directly from Whangarei , making a total of 17 bikes.

No breakdowns occurred although most of the riders seemed to be in a hurry to get up to Parakao. I arrived and drove straight though enjoying a more leisurely pace but was soon overtaken by most of the others before Kaikohe. Tail end Charlie eventually turned up without any bikes on the back, although one of the AJS’s had blown a fuse which was quickly remedied. A splendid lunch was had in congenial surrounds with very prompt service. From here it was Just up the road to see a private collection. Steve Wynne had a treasure trove of vehicles and gave an interesting talk on his background and history. All the vehicles and bikes formed part of his past apart from one which was on loan a 1924 AJS flat-tank. Steve spent most of his working life involved in motor bikes and built up the largest dealership of Ducatti’s in England, along the way servicing and building up bikes for Mike Hailwood and Robert Holden and other notables. Although it was very warm in his low roofed shed he kept us enthralled with his dry English banter for about 45 minutes. Most of us departed after a good chin wag and refreshments generously supplied by Steve and his wife.

The afternoon run back to Whangarei had two options. One out through Haruru Falls and Paihia and the other a more direct route down SH10 and SH1. Most took the shorter route back as it was getting on in the afternoon. Everyone got back in one piece and Peter said in hindsight it was a bit of a waste of time dragging the trailer round. But at least it was peace of mind.

Taranaki VCC 43rd Duckie Motor-Cycle Rally November 2020 This rally was postponed from September and rescheduled for November due to Covid 19 so it was great the event was able to proceed. Whangarei were well represented with Robert & Lorraine Simon & Sylvia Warick & Dawn Martin and myself attending This was my first vintage motorcycle trip outside of Northland and I wasn’t disappointed from the people I met and the bike ride into Whangamomona was fantastic we were so fortunate with the weather Friday and Sunday wet and windy and Saturday the day of the motorcycle rally clear and sunny and good riding roads. The range of the make and model motorcycles taken from the rubber duckie result sheet listed AJS 3 Ariel 5 BMW 1 BSA 9 Harley Davidson 2 Honda 3 Indian 2 Lambretta 1 Matchless 3 Morgan 1 Norton 6 Suzuki 2 Triumph 6 Velocette 2 really good selection. This is the first time the Taranaki VCC have ridden into Whangamomona and we were lucky to get a clear sunny day we left the Top Ten holiday park in New Plymouth and rode to Midhirst for morning tea the road was really busy with traffic due to Stratford AMP we had to be careful crossing the main road from Midhirst working our way through the traffic at Stratford was a petrol stop and a left turn to Whangamomona I found the road out great to ride on with a combination of gentle corners and straights cruise along the closer we got then the road changed to a more winding road and a couple of 25kph switch back corners we had lunch in the camping ground in Whangamomona after lunch the group dispersed and headed back to New Plymouth with a fuel stop on the way back the round trip was 139 miles according to the schedule some may have travelled more. As I mentioned this was my first rubber duckie run andat the prize giving 10 of us were first timers to this event and we were all gifted with can of degreaser each which was very generous because I left a bit of oil around the naki, Really enjoyed the trip and hope to go back next year wishing everyone a happy and safe Christmas As they say keep the rubber on the road. Don Poyntz It was with sadness that we learned of Dons’ passing on 19th December. He was a keen supporter of our monthly runs and, even after his stroke, still managed to come up to Steve Wynns on our Xmas run, travelling with Peter Lovatt. Sincere condolences to Trevor and family. Lofty
Whangarei A&P show 2020 The Classic car club and the Vintage car club were approached by the organisers to have their cars displayed at their show. Not much effort was needed to get the 2 clubs coming together and have their cars displayed on the same plot. Laurence, Rob and Allan were the early birds as the clubs old- timers had to be driven thru the fields and parked before everybody else was arriving. I must say that in no time approximately 40 cars and a few motor bikes were nicely displayed under the guidance of Margaret of the Classic car club. Setting up the gazebos was a different story. The Classic car club did show some previous experience and therefore did not attract too much attention from passersby, but for the Vintage car club’s gazebo (donated by Peter Mears), this was a complete different story. I truly thought we would be on the 6 O’clock news under the heading of: all well if it’s ends well. But people had fun and a good laugh. I was dressed very summerlike as I would presume the temperature to go up in the morning, but it didn’t. Lucky enough Graham offered me a jersey to keep warm; it’s not what you know, but who you know. No problem to kill the time if you decided not to go home, plenty of stalls and activities or socializing in one of the gazeboes. I must say that the Classic car people and our friends from Dargaville are very good at this , but this comes down to experience again. Late in the afternoon it was time to move the vehicles back were they came from. Dick Thorburn loaded his Henry Ford’s replica back on his truck and Laurence drove the Lacre bus for about 200 meters but then it stopped. It couldn’t have run out of petrol, because they filled it up with 4 gallons. But it was dry as a bone, so it must drink like a WW2 Tiger tank. Lucky enough, spare petrol was available and the rest went according to plan. All in all it was an enjoyable day with a lot of people showing their appreciation. Regards Lou
