Chairman’s Comments. Hello to all Club Members. The motorcycle members are having their own runs on the first Sunday of the month and keeping us in touch with what they are doing so we look forward to regular reports. We still don’t have a club captain but we do have a great committee and are able to provide club events. For February we decided to do something different as our second Sunday of the month regular slot coincided with the Waipu Car and Bike Show. Good way to raise our profile and show our cars off. Great show with hundreds of cars and bikes of all sorts. From the NVCC point though not so great. Four vehicles under the club flag and one more nearby. Obviously not a VCC type of event so chalk that one up to experience. The club morning tea on the first Wednesday of the month fell on Waitangi Day and we saw some new faces at that. This is always a good catch-up and for those of you who can get there on a Wed morning, if you haven’t been yet you really should pop along and enjoy catching up with fellow club members. We held our regular third Friday of each month club night at the clubrooms on the 15th February where you can enjoy your own dinner or share it with others. We knew the numbers would be down a bit as some of the regulars were away at Motorcycle events. It was a small group of seven who turned up and we had a good chat and a catch up. This is your chance to meet with your fellow club members and on club information if you desire. Put Friday 15th Mar in your calendar. We are there from 5:30pm on and the BBQ is available. Also on the Wednesdays Lawrence Hillier and his happy band of workers are at the Parts and Vehicle Shed every Wed morning so drop in and say hello. Important events coming up are the Swap Meet and the Motorcycle Rally. More about them in the main body of the Newsletter but please volunteer to help as your committee can’t do it all on their own. If we have people prepared to help for even an hour or two it helps a lot. If you want to know anything about your club feel free to contact myself or any of the committee members. We have heard that a rumour circulating that the Far North Tour is not going to be run in the future. This is incorrect. Because the Far North VCC has provided the dinner for the Far North Tour for the last 45 years, the FNT has always finished at Taipa. The Far North VCC are taking a well-deserved rest from providing the dinner for the Far North Tour so in the future we are looking at alternative venues so may be finishing the run at another centre. We are currently investigating other possibilities so at the last FNT dinner we advised participants to hold off booking accommodation in the Taipa area as we may not finish there. Please rest assured that the FNT is alive and well and will continue to be on our event calendar.

Recently I purchased an electronic, automatic chicken door opener for the “girls” coop. Apart from getting my address wrong, the instructions and warranty card were missing from the carton so I emailed the shop in Christchurch. I’m still waiting for a reply. On the manufacturers website there was a very helpful YouTube video in which the guy said “enclosed in the box is your instructions and Warranty card”! Only one thing left to do - sit down and figure it out for yourself. Eventually - after a bit of muttering - I had the door and timer set and the chickens no longer have to wait for me to get up in the morning and let them out and I don’t have to go out in the rain at night and close the coop. Instructions are very important. In 1883 Lord Raglan, observing the Russian Army from his vantage point on the Sapoune Ridge in Crimea, dictated a message to his Senior Officer. The penciled message read “……..the Calvary is to follow the enemy and try to prevent them from carrying away the guns”. The Officer then handed this message to Captain Louis Nolan, an excellent horseman and designer of the 1902 Universal Pattern Military Saddle, which was widely used by British Empire Troops during The Great War. Nolan was known to be a hot head and had a contempt for Officialdom. He rode with haste to Lord Lucan, who was in charge of the Calvary and relayed the message saying “they were to attack the guns”. The Charge of the Light Brigade was one of Britain’s biggest Military faux pas and cost 107 men (including Captain Louis Nolan) and 400 horses their lives, with 187 men wounded and fifty missing. All totally unnecessary and completely avoidable if Lord Lucan had actually read the message himself. It really does pay to have (and to read) the instructions!

Champagne breakfast at the Northern Wairoa Hotel.
The organisers are very keen to have the Vintage Car Club members volvement in this event and believe it would bring more interest to the tage Machinery Crank Up day and provide a fun day for all.

MotorCycle Report The first motorcycle run for 2019 attracted 10 bikes and riders and two pillion riders. From a 1941 Indian 741B to a 2014 Triumph Thunderbird. We assembled at the alley behind White Cross as normal at 1pm on a hot sunny day. Cameron Frances decided the route for today, leading the way on his Indian heading to Rewarewa Road and on to SH1 turning off towards Mangapai and passing the Tauraroa Area School, Snooks Road then crossing SH14 onto Whatitiri Road crossing Mangakahia Road then turning into Draffin Road heading toward the Poroti Tavern for a nog and a natter. Then we all made our way home. We had 2 members from other one make owners clubs join us, and Tony Gordon on this 1970 Triumph Bonneville who has been a long time sponsor of the Northland Motorcycle rally, his first time ride on our monthly ride. The pillion riders were Dawn Dahlberg and Lorraine Young. We had an Indian ,2 x AJS’s,1 x BSA,1 x Royal Enfield,4 x Triumph’s, and a Suzuki. On another note we have 4 bikes attending the National Motorcycle rally in Blenheim on the 16th February 2019. Brian Taylor 1963 Royal Enfield Interceptor, Cameron Frances on a Moto Guzzi (He is riding all the way there and back possibly with the Auckland riders) Martin Salter 1954 AJS, Robert and Lorraine 1952 Matchless and possibly Errol Gray 1969 Triumph Bonneville, This being a good turn out from this branch as it is a long way to go. The rally is on Saturday and Sunday with a 4 day hub rally after tour around the area. One day is a barge ride with the bikes up the sounds and then a ride back to Blenheim. The rally is finishing at Hanner Springs. It will be good to catch up with all the other VCC members we see every two years at the National Motorcycle Rally, and the overseas entrants that come. Lorraine and Myself stayed in the Netherlands for 3 weeks with Harry and Nel de Boer and rallied in Belgium and rallied 2 days I rode a 1919 Williamson and Lorraine went in a side car with Mark de Boer 1914 Williamson. They sure showed us a good time. We will see them again in Blenheim and their two sons Geert and Mark. Just remember the Northland Motorcycle is coming up on the 18th May and needs volunteers to organise this event THANK YOU. Robert and Lorraine
