JOHN STEINER John and Emily bought their farm in Awaiti Road and pretty soon after John was seen driving his green Austin 7 Ruby about. He joined the EBOP Vintage Car Club along with Emily on the 1st of August 1992 John was a big guy and seemed to be too big for his Ruby, but drove it around the country on Rallies and Tours with other Club Members. John then bought his E Model Vauxhall Velox which he also drove all over the country including the 1996 International Rally in Christchurch. In recent years John bought a red 1930 Ford Model A which he enjoyed for some time, but the call of the comfortable, easy to drive Vauxhall was too much and the Model A found a new home, although he was a passenger in the Model A on many occasions. John spent many years on the Committee of the Branch and we appreciated his time and commitment to the VCC. In August 2018 we were privileged to present John with his and Emily’s 25 year Service Badges. John will be missed by all of the VCC Members who knew him, not only local but people and Members everywhere. John’s birthday was about the time we the Branch went to the Paeroa Vintage Weekend each year and we always had a glass or two for his birthday, we will do the same again this year John. Our condolences go to Emily and family. RIP John Thanks go to Les Costar for the above contribution.
From the Secretary’s Desk Things started out fine for this month’s edition of the Running Board, but all ‘turned to custard’ as the saying goes when I managed to delete (permanently it turned out) the whole lot just as I was nearly finished! Rookie mistakes I suppose. (Don’t ask how as I thought it was saved!) Anyway another day another start! We had a great turnout of members at the last Club night, with 33 attending. Even had to move the ‘Top’ table back to make room. Just a shame we haven’t dragged a new Editor out of the woodwork!! Lytle has suggested to me that perhaps we go to a 2-monthly magazine with just a Calendar of Events in between, so something to think about for the next meeting. August saw a few outings for members cars, and the club received a very nice email from John Steiner’s wife Emily thanking the Branch for the number of vehicles at Johns funeral and photo for service sheet. Daffodil Day has just got better and better and we were lucky with the weather, a report and photos in the following pages.

National AGM Report EBOP Branch 19/08/2019 The National AGM although it didn’t sound too exciting for a lone traveller, the journey South was no doubt an adventure in itself. The weather forecast for the Coast prompted one to think some flippers would be ideal, but after the Friday night rain the West Coast turned on a couple of cracker days of sunshine. Pickups at the Hokitika airport were spot on time, and the half hour road trip to the motels of Greymouth gave the opportunity to formulate introductions. The AGM commenced as per schedule Friday night. The evening covered a number of reports that were presented for approval. There were some interesting discussions raised, especially around growth and how do we promote young blood. An interesting stat being that there were about 20 members under the age of 21 out of a nationwide total of 8000 or so members. I think we may have two in our club alone.
Also mentioned, one of the largest clubs in the country does not have a Club Captain. The Tauranga Branch had their name change recommendation to include ‘Classic’ in their Branch name voted against. This too made for interesting discussion as it appeared VCC Founder Andrew Anderson ‘Stated the Rules’ In no uncertain terms. Remit 1: Regarding 50 year presentations was removed from the table as it was raised during discussion that this is presently covered in the current process. Remit 2: Regarding changes to By-laws was also discussed at length and was passed. Beaded Wheels On-line looks to be a future option with printed versions still available. Canterbury Branch Investigating On Line Membership, requesting permission to continue investigating this option – all agreed. The national President for VCCNZ Dianne Quarrie tabled an interesting recommendation regarding the branding logo for the VCC, this is still very much at the exploratory stages with the support of all present to pursue possible upgraded logo options for marketing purposes, this too with the insight of promoting growth to new audiences. All agreed. Updating the National Calendar of Events was also an opportunity of adding in extra events, The Bay of Plenty Branch took this opportunity to introduce a new event, The Highland Fling, flyers and more info regarding this event to come. In conclusion I found the National AGM an interesting event to attend and found it very informative. Next years 2020 AGM will be in Wanganui. Lytle Hall
Club Captain Report September 2019 Nobby's Nosh. This was another enjoyable social occasion for our club. There were 25 member that came out to the RSA on a chilly night and I think everyone enjoyed the meal and the company. Bill Bert is now the chef there and he has not lost his touch or his skill with food. Daffodil Day Rally Sunday the 25th of August was the Daffodil Rally for cancer. The format was similar to last was year. There were 73 cars and one motorbike in the group. There were 20 vehicles from our club some from the local Hot Rod Club and many from the Classic Car group. Cars also came from Tauranga to Opotiki. The route taken toured through the two shopping main centres in Whakatane, went down to the Heads then returned to the starting point at the Hub Shopping centre car park. This 'Parade' took about half an hour and all the vehicles arrived back in time for the public display held from 2.00pm to 3.00pm. Here the Cancer Society had volunteers collecting donations from the public. $1128 was raised in total with $753 coming from the entrants and $375 from the public. This was an increase from last year when there were 50 cars and $803 raised.

September run to Paeroa, Friday 13th to Sunday 15th. This year Steve and Joy Growden are again organising the trip to the Paeroa Vintage and Classic Weekend. It is taking place on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 13th, 14th and 15th September. The meeting place is at the metal dump at the Kawerau turn off nearest to Rotorua at 10.00am on Friday13th. Steve and Joy take us on an interesting tour through parts of the Waikato arriving in Paeroa late afternoon. On the way up there is a stop at Angela's in Te Aroha. They have also arranged another stop on the Sunday on the way home to visit a tractor collection also near Te Aroha.
Those going will need to book accommodation early. Some of us are staying at the Pedlars Motel in Paeroa on the Friday and Saturday nights. Classic Car Breakfast Last Sunday a good group turned out to the Red Barn. There were about 25 cars there and many of them were also in the Daffodil Rally for Cancer.

A 1968 and 1967 Mustang WoodFest Our club is again having a display at the Kawerau WoodFest. The WoodFest itself goes on for over a week starting on Friday 20th and finishing on Sunday 29th September. Our Club involvement is on Saturday 28th September. We meet on River Road in Kawerau near the Fire Station at 9.50am ready to leave at 10.00am. We will then travel in a group to the area that has been set aside for us at the WoodFest.

Club Captains Report continued East Coast Rally The Rally route is roughly done and the lunch venue arranged. The Lyceum Club will be the starting and finishing point as well as the venue for the prizegiving and dinner. Entry forms will be available early November. Lorraine Stock has kindly agreed to be Secretary and Keith Watson has volunteered to be in charge of sponsorship.

Our Club is arranging a tour from Opotiki to Gisborne leaving from the Opotiki Hot Bread Shop and Cafe in St John Street at 1.00pm on the Friday. Far North Tour. A Run to the Paeroa Vintage and Classic Car Weekend for those interested will be a with a group travelling. Leave Friday home Sunday. Once again Steve and Joy are arranging this run. Meet at the metal dump at the Kawerau turn off nearest Rotorua Club Run. A straight line exercise. Meet at Bunnings at 1.15pm for a 1.30pm start. We will do a repeat of the Night Owl one but this time in daylight followed by another one ending with afternoon tea. Club Night. At the Athletic Club Rooms in Short Street. Meet from 7.00pm and the meeting starts at 7.30pm Our Club puts on a display of vehicles at the Kawerau WoodFest. We meet on Saturday 28th on River Rd near the Fire Station at 9.50am ready to leave as a group at 10.00am to go to the assigned area for us at the WoodFest
