Chairman’s Report I have just got home from the Sky Tower Challenge Show and Shine, organised by the Local Fire Brigades. It has been a beautifully fine clear day, great for displaying vehicles for such a great cause (Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ). At a guess I think there were about 50 vehicles on display with 6 of our Branch vehicles there. New Member, Mark Hudson had his lovely 1926 Chev Tourer on its first public outing. Great to see it and hope to see more of it in the future. Just a comment regarding my last month’s report about Classic Cars fitting into the VCC. If it wasn’t for the Japanese car enthusiasts who displayed their vehicles (and there were a good percentage of these) the day would have been a little disappointing. Seen at the Show & Shine, this 1956 Toyota Corolla which was first registered in NZ in 1961
On Sunday 14th April 11 car loads of Members and family went into the Ureweras, past the Lions Hut to the DOC Camp ‘8 Acres’. Through about 4 fords and quite rough roads, just what old Chryslers and Fords were made for, probably not a Datsun 280ZX, as Alan and Lorraine and grandson Ryan in their Datsun braved the roads and fords polishing the underneath of their car as they went. It was a nice fine day, but a little windy, so we picnicked out of the wind sheltered by the couple of moderns that did the run with us. It was great to have new Members Gary and Jos McSweeney on their first run with us. On Sunday 31st March Club Captain Barry arranged a run around Edgecumbe and to Garry and Liz Bryson’s maize drying complex, then to the Club’s Parts Containers. Gail and I weren’t able to be there unfortunately as we had pre-booked to go to Beach Hop with Steve and Joy and as accommodation is hard to find at Whangamata for this event, booking needs to be made months ahead of the event. It was another great weekend; we saw several of our Branch Members there as well as those from other Branch’s. If only the VCC could organise such an event. If you haven’t been to a Beach Hop, plan to go sometime as it is well worth it. Don’t forget the AGM on Thursday 30th May Starting at 6pm with a Pot Luck Dinner, followed by the Monthly General Meeting, then it will be the AGM, followed by dessert and supper. The two positions that are being vacated are Chairman and Editor. Lytle has indicated that he will stand as Chairman, so the position of Editor is the one we should do our best to fill and maybe a couple of Committee positions as all of the other Members of Committee have indicated their willingness to stand for another term. There is no pressure on any Member to take a Committee position, so don’t be afraid to come and join us for the Pot Luck Dinner and the camaraderie of the AGM. Les

Club Captain Report The big event for May is our AGM on Thursday evening 30th at the Athletic Club Rooms at 7.30pm. We look forward to seeing you there. March Club Run. Nine cars arrived to start the short rally that ended up at the Bryson's Golden Grain Factory. Some did not read the starting point instructions very well and as a result were waiting at the wrong car park but eventually woke up and came to the correct place. The Rally was a short straight line exercise. There were some new members doing their first rally and it was a straight line one so they were starting in at the deep end. A couple of them did very well and won the chocolate fish. The sheet of instructions was folded in half. On the front was the straight line diagram around Edgecumbe and we had dotted lines to the back half of the folded sheet with the streets written on it. There was a 90% success rate in entrants successfully doing the rally and only one car did a lot of extra miles. The tour of Garry and Liz's factory and sheds was very interesting. His computer controlled maize drier impressed us though Garry was still learning about all it could do. They produce a wide range of products and special mixes for cows, calves, pigs, dogs, horses and more. We went past augers, silos, mixers and some huge harvesting machinery. The one that impressed me most was the 400hp, 12 cylinder Cat tractor on rubber tracks that he used mainly for cultivation. They had a two old Farmall tractors in good condition and a A60 station wagon that needed resurrecting as it had been through the flood. Garry also showed us how high the flood was that went through their property after the stop bank collapsed in Edgecumbe. It was quite devastating to see the effect of it and the tools and gear that were lost and damaged. The financial loss let alone the emotional challenge was huge. Afternoon tea followed the tour and then there was the opportunity to visit the club's spare parts containers which Garry and Liz kindly allow us to keep on their property. April Club Run. Tessa and I were in the South Island for most of April so missed the April run. No Doubt it will be reported on elsewhere. We took our 1973 MGB on our trip and travelled down the West Coast heading for Invercargill and were hoping to cross the Waiho River on the dump truck that had been operating at Franz Joseph for about a week carting cars, food, workers, school kids etc across the river bed. We were booked to go across on the first trip on Thursday morning but on Wednesday night were rung up and told Health and Safety concerns had caused them to stop operating. So we did a bit of back tracking up to and over Arthurs Pass and started again towards Invercargill. Including the Rally and side trips the MG travelled 4500 kms and performed well. SI National Easter Rally. As part of our touring around we entered this rally. There were 172 cars entered which was about three times as many as the NI National Easter Rally held in Auckland last year. Part of the difference could be the easier travelling in the South Island and several clubs relatively 4
close to Ashburton with most entries coming from the Canterbury, Ashburton and South Canterbury Clubs. There were 9 North Island entries. The whole event was based at the Ashburton Racecourse which was an ideal venue. It was very well organised and a credit to the Ashburton Club. It was a fine day for the rally which was basically a tour with the only competitive part being a timed section going for about 12 miles from the start. There were three runs, a short, medium and long one, and all ended up at Methven for lunch where the rally finished. After lunch we toured back to Ashburton but the directions that we were given mentioned a few stops. There was a Gatekeepers Lodge, the old school and church at Barrhill, the Grange Tractor Collection and the Rolls Royce and Bentley Service Centre. All these stops were worthwhile and easily filled in the rest of the day. Saturday night was a relaxed get together at the racecourse with a BBQ style tea. On Sunday it was raining. The programme was for a gymkhana and public display from 10.30 to 2.30pm. A hundred or so hardy members of the public came and looked at the cars but the weather meant that the gymkhana was cancelled. Instead we were asked 10 questions as part of the competition, five on general knowledge and five on VCC and NZTA knowledge. The racecourse had lots of room for us to socialise under cover. The Sunday night dinner was magnificent but how they managed to find the prize winners must have tested their ingenuity. On Monday we had a fine morning and took advantage of a visit to the club rooms including their museum and spare parts shed and also to Colin Sweetman's car collection of about 30 cars from 1960 to 2018 models. Both of these visits were also interesting and worthwhile. FYI: A TV show called 'Start Me up' comes to Duke TV on Wednesday 1st May at 9.00pm. There appears to be 6 episodes and it is about bringing NZ overlooked and classic cars back to life. Barry

From the Secretary April has been a pretty lovely month weather-wise in the Eastern Bay of Plenty and among other things we enjoyed a picnic run into the Urewera’s to a DOC campsite called 8 Acre. Plenty of horse ‘poop’ to dodge on the road which wasn’t too bad although a certain member in a 280 ZX coupe said he wasn’t going to grade anymore roads for the rest of us! All the fords (water not cars) had been concreted. And while some of our members went to the ‘Beach Hop’, quite a few refreshed their memories and gave some of our new members an introduction to straight-line navigation, followed by a very interesting visit to member Gary Bryson’s business. Quite an insight to what is produced in Edgecumbe. Officialdom-wise the month hasn’t been too busy, but several new members were officially added so

The next meeting in May will the Branch AGM (Notice elsewhere), and nomination forms are available. As our Chairman Les has given us 4 sterling years of service Vice-Chair Lytle Hall is preparing for the top job! However, this will leave a gap to fill to take over Lytle’s previous role.

From the Editor’s Desk At Easter, John and I attended the 27th National NZMMC in Rotorua. It was a super weekend and really enjoyed ourselves. We were worried that the weather might turn to custard however, the sun shone Friday, Saturday and Sunday until late in the evening when it started to rain. (We did, however, have a wet drive home on the Monday). There were cars from all over New Zealand including the South Island and it was wonderful to see such a display of these iconic cars. I remember many years ago, they were the cars that the driving instructors used, and I learned to drive in one myself. I have written an article about the weekend and this is further in the issue with some photos. I still find it quite fascinating watching the proud owners of these cars, get them ready for judging. The long hours of dedication to the finer details of the cars always win out in the end. The judges were extremely thorough and there was much discussion on the last night as to where points were lost. Of course, John Twaddle’s lilac Morris 1,000,000 stole the show with the people and that is why I have put a photo of it on the front page as well as elsewhere in the article. At our next AGM I have elected to stand down from the role of Editor so this will be my last edition. I have enjoyed doing the Running Board however it is now time for someone else to take up the reins and put a fresh face on this magazine. Margaret

A Very Minor Weekend th
John and I were invited to attend the 27 National Morris Minor Convention, which was held over Easter in Rotorua, the idea being that he would drive John Twaddle’s green Morris Minor and John T would dive his lilac Morris 1,000,000. The Convention this year was hosted by the Rotorua branch of the Morris Minor club and the programme looked busy and interesting. So, on a sunny Good Friday, we set off late morning, and arrived in Rotorua early afternoon. After a quick lunch, it was polishing and shining up the cars time. Fortunately, the house we were staying in had a carport which covered one car and most of the second one from the elements overnight. I had driven our town car over also and this was handy for going to the dinners on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings which were at the Rotorua Copthorne Hotel. Bright and early on the Saturday morning, we were up, cars polished and down to gather at the Hotel car park to drive to where the judging of the cars was to take place. There were 60 cars registered for the Convention, however only 44 were to be judged. This was done at the RDA premises in Ngongtotaha and as the cars arrived, there was a team of people cooking a barbeque breakfast of sausages, hash browns, bacon and eggs.
The cars all duly lined the walls of the huge indoor arena and they looked amazing. There were cars, utes, woodies, convertibles and flat decks of all colours. It was a very impressive
display of one Marque cars. The competition was fierce and there was a bit of banter sitting around eating
breakfast about which car was better and which one they would like to buy. John Twaddle’s lilac Morris Million was coveted by one of the members who would like first option to buy it should he ever decide to sell it. 11
We left the judges to it and some went shopping and some went to Paradise Valley to fill in time until the judging was finished. Then we gathered again at the Copthorne in the evening for drinks and dinner. After dinner the Federation trophies were given out. John T collected the prize for best 2 Door Highlight Sedan. Sunday morning, again bright and early everyone gathered at the Hotel carpark again and then all travelled to the Lakefront reserve for official photos and allow the public to view the cars. It was another sunny morning and the cars looked so good all together. A few extra cars (not registered at the convention) rocked up and one of these was a house truck which boasted a shower, stove, beds etc.

At around 11.15 AM we were given our driving instructions to a BBQ luncheon venue in the country and duly set off. The tour took us up past the airport and around the top of the lake and then up on to SH5, turning left and then down to Paradise Valley Road and once more, minors were parked all over the property.
The venue was a property owned by one of the Rotorua members and his family were there to entertain us.

It was set in a huge barn (and I mean huge) with a massive fireplace pumping out some heat. Everyone had been asked to dress up – cowboy / wild west clothing was the theme and quite a few people wore the obligatory hats
and check shirts, a few Red Indian costumes and even Annie Oakley was there. It was amazing. The barn was set in alcoves with hay bales as seating, the food was delicious and went down well with a beer or wine. The music was Country and Western and soon there was line dancing for some, others just joined in the singing and two of the family members who were sisters, played guitar and
the ukulele. It was the highlight of the weekend as far as I was concerned. We all had so much fun, they almost had to push us out the door to get back to Rotorua for the final dinner and the Rotorua Club Prizegiving, where John Twaddle managed to collect another 3 awards and among them was People’s Choice and best paint job. It was a great weekend, the weather was kind to us, the rain held off and it was a lot of fun. Editor
