From your Chairman: Chairman’s Report What do you do on these hot summer days. I should be mowing the lawn, but it is slowly dying with the heat. I have been stacking firewood in the shed but the heat has got to me, so the best thing is to keep out of the sun and write a few lines for the Running Board. Since the last Running Board, the Branch has had quite a few events which have been well attended by our Members. It’s great to see Members out and about with family and friends in their old vehicles. On the 8th of December we participated in the Edgecumbe Parade, great for Edgecumbe as our vehicles made up a significant part of their parade. There were 7 cars with 16 Members and family. On the 15th of December we took part in the Kawerau Christmas Parade. 16 cars and 28 Members and family took part, we were also a significant part of this event with so many decorated old vehicles taking part. Once the parade was over we went around to Gay and Harry’s for a sausage sizzle and lunch. Thank you Gay and Harry for being great hosts. Later in the afternoon a group of us went to the Christmas in the Park entertainment and fireworks display. It was a magnificent day out for those that took part. Unfortunately, Whakatane Christmas Parade was on the same day, as they had changed the date which clashed with Kawerau and I understand there were no Vintage vehicles representing our Branch in their parade. Joy thought a pre-Christmas Dinner might be a good way of ending the year, so an email was sent out to all Members, inviting them to the New Hong Kong Restaurant for dinner. There were 14 Members and friends at dinner, a great evening and a good way of ending the year. On the 6th of January was the first Classic Car Breakfast of the year, although numbers were down, we still had the hard core Vintage group there, 13 Members with 8 cars. Rotorua Lake Front Car Show on the 20th I am told there were 6 of our Members taking part, with 3 cars on show. Farming Like Grandad Day on the 27th of January. There was the usual good collection of horses, tractors old and newer. Lots of old farm machinery and live exhibits and a great collection of old vehicles. From our Branch there were 17 or more cars, trucks and tractors on show and a whole lot more from BOP Branch and others from around the district that brought their vehicles to display. It was a great effort by all of those that participated and of course there was the Posh Picnic where Members dressed in their finery, brought out the best vintage table cloths and china etc and made an excellent display under the 3 gazebos we had erected and I am told we had a few enquiries about Membership. It was another great day, thanks to all of those who took part.
The Chairman’s Run on 13th January, we left from Bunnings with simple instructions to get to Kawerau for a BBQ lunch. We had 29 Members and 15 cars.

Thanks to those Members who were able to be there, we had a great day. Thanks also to those that helped in some way, cooking, setting the table with salads, doing dishes etc. Also thanks to Member Wally Robertson for donating boxes of parts to the parts shed. Our Annual “East Coast Rally” on the 2nd February. It would be good if someone would do a report on the Rally for the March issue of the Running Board. Les

Club Captain Report Looking at the Calendar of Events there are several rallies coming up in February and March. I hope most members are able to take part in some of them. Edgecumbe Christmas Parade. I think our Club had eight cars in the Parade which went down College Road to the Sports Ground. Here we were on display and had time to look at the other floats and all the stalls and activities Kawerau Christmas Parade + lunch. The weather was fine and there were 17 vintage cars in the Parade as well as heaps of floats. We went round the shopping centre block twice and the large crowd seemed to appreciate seeing the cars. A highlight of the day was the lunch at Harry and Gay's which most of us managed to get to. Classic Car Breakfast. Once again there was a good turn out of cars at this event. Not so many of our Club Members as last time but plenty of Fords of many types and ages. Chairman's Run. This was an interesting run around the Rangitaiki Plains and Kawerau to end up at Les and Gail's home. Here they had prepared a great lunch. The BBQ was going and we were well fed with meat, potato and salads followed by desert. It was very relaxing sitting among the trees and sun umbrellas on their lawn. Farming Like Grandad .This event was organised by 'The Waterwheel' which is based in Kawerau. There were over 25 cars from our club and Tauranga and a number of members were dressed in period costume and had their old crockery, table cloths and delicious food. Phil led the parade of cars in his smart 100 year old 1919 Overland. The Waterwheel also had lots of displays of old farming gear and machinery. East Coast Rally. Steve and Joy have set the Rally and had it checked and tell us it is straight forward and no one will get lost. Barry
From the Secretary Welcome to the New Year and a good old- fashioned Hot Summer! The Farming Like Grandad event at Kawerau resulted in a good number of inquiries from people thinking of joining the Club, which put attendance levels at our January meeting at a record number! So we have 3 applications in the pipeline and another 2 possibles. Everyone’s subscriptions are up to date now, Well done folks, but in the future please remember to put names and branches along with payments to Head office otherwise Julie will be at serious risk of going bald!!

I must admit to taking a while getting back into the swing of things after the New Year, but hopefully have caught up on Branch Manual updates and next is to look at our Constitution. Your magazine may be a little later than usual getting to you this month as our Editor is having a week away, and the same will apply next month when Margaret will be looking forward to moving back to Whakatane. That’s about all from me, I hope you are able to partake in at least one of the many VCC events on at this time of year, Drive safe Karen From the Editor’s Desk Another Christmas has been and gone, we are into February and everything is whizzing by it seems. The photo on the front of this issue shows Walter and Alison McFarland’s 1926 Alvis with Steve and Joy Growdon’s Plymouth taken at the Golden Pond Rest Home visit. Currently John and I are living in Opotiki (and have been since beginning of December) waiting to finalise the sale of our next home back in Whakatane. Settlement date is 1st March, so we are now counting down the days and starting to make the arrangements to have our furniture taken out of storage and delivered to us in our new home. This has been the most unusual shift with a 3-month space in the middle. I thought it would be like a holiday but the house we are staying in had been rented from some time and TLC was required. We sure put some mileage on the cars as John still went to work and we had other meetings and events that we were required to attend. We were absolutely gob smacked by the number of cars that pass on double yellow lines around this neck of the woods. We were in Hamilton last weekend and I was quite shocked at the poor knowledge of driving on a roundabout. NZTA certainly could do more to improve driver education. It seems that once you have your license you are good to go and don’t need any further knowledge. Merging like a zip on motorways is another pet hate – the number of drivers who do not practice that is quite startling. Well that is all from me for now. In the meantime, happy and safe motoring.
