Chairman’s Report: It gives me pleasure to present my Chairman’s Report at the 48th AGM of the Eastern Bay of Plenty Branch of the Vintage Car Club. This year has been kind to us even though we were in a Covid epidemic. The only events we missed out on was the Daffodil Day, which was a shame as Bevan had put a lot of work into its organisation. The other events which were the usual Christmas Parades which was unfortunate for the communities involved. Covid did force the Branch into having a two jab policy for a couple of months which had an effect on some events. With Covid hopefully under some sort of control we can begin to plan our events for the coming year. We look forward to the Daffodil Rally in August and the East Coast Rally in February and all of the other events we are planning to hold. Thanks must go to all of the Members on the back page of our Running Board Magazine, without these Members it wouldn’t be possible to run a successful Branch as ours. Thanks must also go to all Members who have attended Club Nights and taken part in our Runs, Events and Rally’s. It has been my pleasure to be the Chairman of the Branch this year. Thank you all for your help, guidance and friendship. I wish the new Chairman and Committee well for the coming year. Continuing on: As we haven’t had a Club Captain for this past year, Barry has collated Club Events and sent out the Run reminders etc. Thank you for your efforts Barry. Although Covid had an effect on a couple of our events we were still able to have a successful East Coast Rally. Thanks to Barry and Tessa and Team. We also had a mid-week run most months, thanks to Harry and Gay. And most months we had a Sunday Run or another event. Every second month we attend the Classic Car Breakfast, where we usually have a great turn-out. Places we have been this year on our Runs include; Neil Surtees Collection, we had a Night Owl Run, won by Bruce and Lorraine, Nobby’s Nosh at the RSA, Ross Fergusson’s Bromiliads, Sisam’s Valley, Okere Falls, Christmas Lunch at Harry and Gay’s, Lake Okataina, Maketu & Little Waihi, and Lake Rerewhakaitu and of course the very successful Gisborne visit to Ohiwa Motor Camp where we has 30 of our Members attend some part or all of the weekend, unfortunately Gisborne were down on Members as this was the weekend they had the big floods. Plus we had a few Parts Shed Working Bees and of course some Members went off to other Events and Rally’s organised by other Clubs etc. So thanks to all of those who have arranged these Runs and Events to keep us all entertained, we all appreciate your efforts. Drive Safe, Les The 48th AGM has now been and gone. I think the most memorable thing about it was the sumptuous dinner the ladies provided for us, most of us had too much to eat and some tried to sleep it off during the Meeting, or were they just bored because of the slow moving meeting. The only changes were, Mark and Karen taking Barry’s role of Event Collator and sending out the emails, John Burton taking my place on the Parts Shed group. Other than that all positions have remained as they were. Check out the back page of the magazine.

Rerewhakaitu Run th
On Sunday the 15 of May 11 cars assembled at the Te Teko Reserve Car Park and toilets to go on a tiki-tour with questions to Lake Rerewhakaitu, arranged by Mark and Karen. It was hard to get us moving as we just wanted to chat, eventually we were off. Left out of the car park and right into Tahuna Road, where it started to rain, a couple of questions, then right onto the Galatea/Murupara Road. Then straight ahead onto the metal road. John and Eileen were parked on this intersection, I guess wondering “do we really go down this road”. We passed them and soon they got in behind us. The road was bumpy in places and slippery in places and I know a couple of us got into a bit of a slide, but no dust on this road today. We followed this road, answering some questions and admiring the scenery until we came off the metal road onto a sealed road. By this time we were following Alan and Lorraine. Gail asked “why are we going away from the lake” “ who knows maybe the road curves and comes back to the lake” but no the road ended, Stocky got out of his car scratching his head, “did we miss the turn” then John and Eileen arrived, they saw the turn but didn’t think it was the correct one. So off we went back and found the turn and into the DOC Reserve for a well earned lunch. Of course all of the others had found their way there and were munching on sandwiches and having a bit of a joke at our expense. It was a great place to stop for lunch, although it had stopped raining, there is a nice shelter where we had our lunch and toilets were nearby. After lunch it was the second half of our tiki-tour, turn left onto the Murupara Road, then left onto the Kaiangaroa Village Road. As we got close to the village, Mark and Karen lead the way, I guess they didn’t want any of us to get lost in the village. I don’t know whether to be sorry for the people living in the village or happy they have a roof over their heads, most houses had broken windows, weather beaten weatherboards, rusty roofs, although some had new roofs. I don’t know who owns these houses, if they are privately owned or still owned by a logging company, anyway it must be a depressing place to live. Then out of the village onto the main road bypassing Murupara, onto Troutbeck Road, then right onto the main Whakatane Road. We then went into Lake Aniwhenua Reserve for a cuppa under the shelter. Then we headed home, some went Tahuna Road to Te Teko and home, others went over the Dam and home. It was a great enjoyable day out, thanks to Mark and Karen, you guys always put on an excellent Run. But throughout the day we kept wondering where is Trevor in his little Red Kia, nobody saw Trev all day. When we got home Trev phoned “guess what happened to me” he said, “the Kia had a flat battery and I had to wait 2 hours for AA” Trev now has a jumper pack and numbers in his cell phone. This is a reminder to us all to get each other’s cell phone numbers you never know when they might be useful. A Weekend at Waihi Beach – May 2022 With three old Mopars – 2 Dodges and a Chrysler – we belong to the Chrysler Restorers Club which covers Dodge, Plymouth, Chrysler, DeSoto, Imperial, Maxwell, Chalmers, Fargo, Graham Bros, Jeep, and Valiant. Phew – a whole bunch, but the first 4 are the most common. The club has a property in Papakura which provides for a meeting room, library and parts storage. Because of our location our contact has mainly been the bi-monthly newsletter and the odd email or call regarding parts or information. However this May the club’s annual rally and competition for the Todd Cup was scheduled to be held in Waihi Beach. Too good an opportunity to miss – we registered and booked accommodation. The 1935 Dodge DU (Buster) was repaired after its return from New Plymouth in January on the trailer and prepped for the trip. The weather forecast was for two fine days – Friday and Saturday – followed by wet on Sunday. For once they were correct. Rally headquarters was at Beachaven Holiday Park in Waihi Beach which was a good choice for us to spread out. The Waihi Beach RSA was about a mile down the road for Friday night’s intros and dinner. We quickly found we had a friendly and welcoming bunch and as newcomers easily joined in. Some of the faces and names we recognised from the New Plymouth VCC rally. Saturday morning saw us group up in Waihi Beach main street and then drove out to Katikati to Henry’s Rod Shop to be guided through the shop and then left to explore all the treasures and projects on hand. The large size of the business’s facilities demonstrate the advantages of being based in a provincial town with the consequent lower cost of land and buildings. There is plenty of space and they have some very impressive workshop and paint shop equipment. Access to Henry’s was arranged by Trevor Gordon who has specialized in 1920s-50s Mopar restorations for years. He is semi-retired now, but still in high demand. Our next stop was at the Fairview Golf Clubhouse at Aongatete, south of Katikati for a display of the cars, voting for the Todd Club and lunch, of course. Our Chrysler Club members voted for best car for the Todd Cup, and golf club members and the public voted for their Public Choice of car. The photos taken at Henry’s Rod Shop show the caliber of the 25 cars and trucks on display. One car not shown in the photo as it joined later was a DeSoto Airflow, which is a spectacular and rare car along with the Chrysler Airflow which was produced at the same time in 1934 to 1936. All of the cars were beautifully presented. Our next visit kept us in the Aongatete area at the Eco Avocados Farm. Here I was prepared to be bored to death by stories of one of my most unfavourite green fruits – avos. That didn’t happen. For a start the owner is an American born Kiwi who loves old cars – he runs around in his favourite Model A pickup – and he is a born story teller and salesman. He sold everyone but me every bag of avocados that he could find and educationally enlightened us about his favourite fruit. Even I now know more about the green nobbly things than I ever thought necessary. After that, it was a drive out past the north side of Katikati to our guide Trevor Gordon’s rural property where he has sheds and machinery workshops (note the plural) where he works great acts of magnificence on Mopar restorations and hotrods. Clearly he doesn’t mind restoring to the finest degree or hotrodding to an artistic extreme. The ladies retreated to the house for high tea, while the automotive folk stayed in the sheds reveling in the oil, grease and machinery and drinking out of the basest of mugs. Seventh heaven. The day/night ended back at the Beachaven for a bbq dinner and prize giving. David and Beverley Oliver won the Todd Cup with their 1929 Chrysler 70 Coupe. Sunday resumed with another trip to Katikati, morning coffee at Robert Harris with another display of the cars and a trip to view a collection in sheds in town. About this time the rain was getting heavier, so being on south side of Katikati we headed for the main road and southeast to Pikowai. It was an enjoyable weekend with cars and people who we had never met before, and it showed how a common interest can make new introductions such fun. Oh, and Buster started instantly every time when asked, and travelled everywhere on his own wheels and power. Even his wipers worked without fail as they had a steady workout on Sunday. Bruce Seddon

Parts Shed Report and photo’s from Joy Here’s some photos of the Parts Shed after the working bee. Thanks to Mark for obtaining the steel. Steve purchased the timber and screws so all the shelves in the container have been replaced and the steel has been put between the 2 containers waiting for the Iron and Nova to be installed.
If anyone would like a photo of their car put up there is frames available, the photos need to be 200 x 150.
