Chairman’s Report: Winter is on its way so it’s time to do a bit of maintenance on the old vehicles in preparation for next seasons motoring, free from covid restrictions and the like. Funny how a Lucas semi-sealed head light bulb used to be in nearly every British car headlight, is now very hard to find. I guess sealed headlights became normal so the bulbs became obsolete. So if you have any don’t chuck them out. The AGM for our Branch is on Thursday 26th May and we do need a couple of Committee Positions to be filled. We haven’t had a Club Captain for a few years and the role Barry has had collating the Coming Events and sending out email reminders will also need to be filled. Most of the other roles in Committee or Ancillary Positions Members have indicated they are prepared to continue on. I know it is always hard to commit to a position within the Committee, but if all of the positions are filled it makes it easier for all of the Committee. Have a think about it. In April we had a couple of runs. After the Classic Car Breakfast we headed to Maketu via some dusty roads for lunch, then a little sightseeing through Maketu to Little Waihi. Harry and Gay’s Mid-week Run was cancelled because of the weather and re-scheduled for the Sunday of Easter, but as most Members were away or had other things on, only three cars took part, they had a great time but lost Trevor, he has since turned up. The Night Owl Run is coming up on June 25th. We discussed some options for the meal after the run, PotLuck Dinner at the Athletic Clubrooms as usual, or Pizza Dinner (as we did at our November Club Night) or Dinner at the RSA. Little Waihi Estuary EBOP Monthly Club Run – April 2022 Our April monthly run started with the bi-monthly Classic Car Breakfast at the Red Barn in Thornton and then rolled into another picnic run west along the coast. Our first check point was to be Edgecumbe where we caught up with Steve and his grandson in the Landrover Series I. A flat tyre incident on another car at the Red Barn had spooked Steve as he admitted he was travelling with no spare wheel and he “raced” ahead to Edgecumbe to check his tyre pressures. Wife Lesley took the sensible option and bailed out to travel in comfort in the Seddon’s Pontiac. We then took the coast road to Otamarakau Valley Road and turned inland for our now obligatory coating of dust on gravel roads in the countryside around Otamarakau, Pukehina, & Pongakawa to Paengaroa. This land is all rapidly converting from dairy to kiwifruit orchards in some large scale developments. Along the way we lost Steve and his Landrover as he found another more innovative route to Paengaroa. At the Paengaroa regrouping point we were entertained by the 7 litre Pontiac finding ways to drink fuel even faster than normal when the carburetor float played up and spilled fuel through the engine bay. From that point we turned north to the coast and our destination at Maketu in the reserve alongside the Maketu estuary. After the picnic we drove over the hill to the beach at Little Waihi on the Waihi estuary on the inland side of the Pukehina spit. Once again we enjoyed the autumn fresh air in Bay of Plenty’s beautiful countryside far away from any pesky virus. Bruce Seddon Thanks Bruce for your write-up about our April Club Run
