CHAIRMAN’S RAMBLINGS

I had the pleasure of attending the National Executive Meeting and the VCC AGM held in Greymouth over the weekend of 16 -18 August 2019. Not one of the easiest places to get to from Wellington, but we made it. Starting with a flight to Christchurch and then a drive over Arthurs Pass to Greymouth, Christchurch was crisp, and it started to rain before we reached Arthurs Pass for lunch, I am sure the Café had imported the pricelist from a central Auckland Café. On to Greymouth and check into our accommodation at the Ashley Hotel, where the meetings were to take place. Friday evening was the Executive meeting. The meeting contained the usual items like the budgets for the next year, membership status etc. then a discussion on the Draft Branch Constitution. This is a Template that can be used by branches that have out-of-date Constitutions but are unsure how to go about writing a new one. We were on the West Coast and everyone says ‘it rains on the West Coast’ I had never experienced the West Coast in the rain; it has always been fine when I have visited. Friday night it rained and Saturday, it rained; this is no ordinary rain. If it rains like that in Wellington, we would have surface flooding and in Auckland it would be a state of emergency but in Greymouth, when the rain stops, the ground is wet, no flooding, no drama. Off to the AGM to listen to the welcome words of the Greymouth Mayor, talking a little about Greymouth, then a motivational speech from Andrew Anderson, a founding member. When I first heard Andy speak a few years ago, my thoughts were ‘where did he come from’ he sounded like a 1950’s politician to me, but at the age of 91 he is still as sharp as a tack and always looking forward to the future, remembers the past very well but definitely not stuck there. There was also talk of how to join the club online, and this will happen. There is a member of the management committee that has been tasked with taking this from concept to reality and appears to understand the complexities of how this can happen for every branch and their different requirements/fees etc. I will add more info in the coming months. The drive back to Christchurch on Sunday started early with a drive to Reefton for breakfast and then headed off on deserted roads and glorious sunshine, towards the Lewis Pass and the snow. Temperatures got down to 2 degrees. Then on to Christchurch for the flight home. My Last comment for the month regards the Daffodil Rally for Cancer – Great work Roger, Diane and the organising committee, and thank you to all the helpers on the day. I am sure that there will be more detail on this elsewhere in the newsletter. Bill 3

Daffodil rally was, I feel, a fantastic effort by all concerned, which lead to a very successful day out and a very worthwhile contribution towards fighting cancer. We also raise the profile of the Wellington Vintage Car Club this way. The feedback that I have had has been very positive with people looking forward to attending next year’s event. Coming up this month is the Upper Hutt Spring Carnival display and Toms Tour. October we have the Heritage run and of course early November is our annual rally and dinner. Again, the November rally will occupy both Saturday and Sunday. Further details will be in the Motoring Spirit. Regards Neale

Another month, another newsletter, talk about a revolving door! Another busy month, what with AGM’s, Sunday runs, mid week runs, a great club night and the big event, which was the Daffodil Run for Cancer. Despite being in the middle of a bout of shingles, I enjoyed the club night; the report of which, you will find elsewhere in the magazine, I and attended the Daffodil Run, helping to collect all those wonderful dollar$ for a wonderful cause. It was a great day, well attended by members, other one-make clubs and the public. The Kapiti Brass Band played and the cup cakes and sausages went down well. No final figure yet, for the amount raised, but I think it may have topped last years amount. Whilst I’m on about shingles, I’d just like to say that yes, I had chicken pox as a youngster; even had shingles as a 10 year old, so thought I would be immune to it later in life, but no, apparently the chicken pox virus stills stays in the body and can break out at any time later on. My message here is that if you think you wont get shingles now, just think that if you are in your—what shall we say—twilight years, second childhood, or just 60 and over, then get vaccinated. I didn’t and have endured a very painful 2 weeks. Ed.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT 26TH AUGUST: Trevor Barnes 16 people attended the meeting. Past Events: Daffodil Day, 25th August: Held at McKays Crossing, Kapiti. This year the fundraiser for the Cancer Society raised over $5200 and over 200 cars and 20 motorcycles attended, mostly from the BSA and Classic clubs. Coming Events: Taranaki Rubber Duckie, Saturday 21st September: Hal O’Rorke, Ashley Blair, Warrick Laing, John Viner, Paul Switzer, Peter Simpson and Trevor Barnes are attending. Tour route and accommodation is arranged. Hutt riders meet at Haywards, 8.00am and Waikanae by 9.00am. Warrick and John are only doing the first tour day. October-November: Spontaneous rides each month. Peter Simpson will email details. Motorcycle night at the Club Night, October 15th: Several people will bring bikes and talk about them. Other members are encouraged to bring their bikes in support. Wairarapa Gold Medal Trial, Nov. 23rd: Note: Auckland M/C Rally date clashes with this. Xmas Ride Friday December 20th:Aaron will organise this. 10.00am at Brown Owl. The 2020 Biennial Rally 25-26 January 2020: Admin: Peter Simpson; In hand. Prizes & trophies: Warrick Laing and John Neill; In hand. Castrol has been secured. John suggested obtaining cans of Brakecleen at a wholesale price. Further consideration is needed regarding rally costs. Advertising: Ashley Blair; A poster has been prepared, and a few modifications were suggested. Catering: Peter confirmed Valley Caterers. Dinner $29 and Sunday BBQ $15: Paper bag lunches, organised by Pauline Gwynn. Pub Charity: Hal O’Rorke: The application to Pub Charity is in progress. Route Organiser Marshalls, route notes and Sunday run: The Wainuioru Hall and Anzac Hall in Featherston are confirmed. Sunday suggestions were: visit the Tram Museum or loop over Paekakariki Hill and Grays Road, returning to the club for a BBQ. Another possibility was a visit to Wrights Hill Fortifications if they would open specially for us. Aaron’s South Island Tour 20-26th March 2020: Friday 20th: 5.00pm sailing to Blenheim. 21st: To Rangiora. 22nd-24th: Akaroa. 25th: Kaikoura via inland route. The tour deposit of $200 is to be paid by November with the balance of the $343 tour charge, by January. National M/C Rally 2021: Messrs Simpson and Barnes are still to meet with the committee for the Wairarapa 2021 National Motorcycle Rally, to provide support for organising it. Other Business: Peter and Trevor are on the Rubber Duckie Tour on the next M/C night so those attending, have to conduct the meeting and provide a report for the Motoring Spirit. Next Meeting: At ‘The Butcher and Brewer’, 7:30pm. August is often the month when we go to Chocolate Fish for a yummy lunch then take the short drive to the Old Time Cinema in Lyall Bay. The cafe always treats us well with tables laid up in the warm back room and this year, a chocolate fish for all as we leave. Yum! Cass, the owner of the cinema, had delved into his archives and started the show with some old advertisements, quite hilarious compared to todays. Then two real treats, first an old film showing the refurbishment of hundreds of American army trucks and jeeps in Gracefield, which came from Guadalcanal. The second, a film showing the origin of the Courtesy Club, shot in Wellington. While a Wellingtonian was showing an Australian family around the city, a veteran Wolseley driven by Len Southward drove by. It was noted that the old car was shown more courtesy by other drivers than was usual for contemporary vehicles, so the Courtesy Club was formed and attracted all sorts of vehicles and their drivers, from veteran to modern. Both the VCC and Lions members joined in. (Looking at some driving today, perhaps we need to start another Courtesy Club!) The main feature, The Gumball Rally, entertained everyone hugely. Lots of laughter as the hapless participants destroyed their rides and evaded the cops, crossing the States from New York to LA. And the sun shone all day! Ann

AUGUST CLUB NIGHT Thanks to Brian Christensen, we were able to have Grant Sidaway along for the evening. Grant founded Seniornet quite a few years ago and this has been a great success for older internet users. However, Grant didn't come here tonight to talk about his work with the internet, but because of his interest in technology, he has another hobby and that is 3D printing and so we were able to see first hand, what this is all about. Grant had set up his printer earlier in the evening and was making some bits and pieces during the chat before the meeting started. This machine wasn't very big compared to some that are around, as he was able show via a power point demonstration as the talk progressed, but his particular machine was a great starter for hobbyists. Grant explained that there are many designs on the internet that can be downloaded, adapted and used on these machines. He also said that with a CAD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting) program, you could make your own designs and models. One program he mentioned was Sketchup, which I have had a quick look at and it does have a lot of information and capabilities for making your own models. Anyway, Grant had set the machine to make a very intricate model of a hand, while he was speaking, and after about 40 minutes, it was complete, using plastic filament fed through a nozzle, similar to a heat gun, to build up the model in 1mm layers. He also had on display, some other items he had made, including a ball bearing race, which was made in one piece, balls and all, and worked just like a metal one. I have seen these machines at places like Warehouse Stationary for about $400 and it would seem to be an ideal new hobby tool. Put away the lathes people, the 3D printer is on it’s way!

August Sunday Run: Richard Davies On Sunday 4th of August, we met again at the Limelight Café, in Upper Hutt, for morning tea, before heading off to MacDonald Nightingale Car Sales, also in Upper Hutt. This was to see a number of classic vehicles stored there. These included a 1947 Ford Sedan; 1963 Mercury Sedan; 1959 Ford Mainline Ute; 1974 Holden Sedan; 1948 Ford Ute, and a 1967 Holden Station Wagon. Members who attended were: Ivan Gardner. Ian and Katrin McCulloch. Myself. Fred and Fay Hamer. Roger White. Bob. James Speirs. Trevor Barnes and Paul Switzer.

After That, most went home, but a few of us ended up at Harcourt Park for a picnic lunch and a natter, before heading off.

Targa 2019 Time Trial When: Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd Nov 2019. Where: Central and Lower/Mid North Island – Refer Draft Event Programme. What and Why: Outstanding opportunity for VCC members to drive iconic North Island roads as a time trial. This is not a race, but rather an exercise in safe, precise driving to maintain a set average speed over closed tarmac stages (Similar to a regularity trial). It’s also a great opportunity for VCC branches to raise public awareness of the VCC and hopefully attract some new and younger members. Cost: Substantial 30% discount off standard entry fee for VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible cars = $4,790 reduced to $3,353 + Medical Levy and RallySafe. (All entry fees are + GST). Annual Lake Ferry Excursion Dear Classic Car Club member/car enthusiast 2019 marks the 39th anniversary of the annual Lake Ferry Excursion, organised by the Sunbeam Car Club of NZ (Wellington). To make sure everyone has this date down early to save conflicts with other events, the Lake Ferry Excursion is always the 2nd Saturday in December. This year that makes it the 14th of December. As always, we meet at the Fell Museum at 11am for an 11.30 departure from Featherston to Lake Ferry, where we meet to talk over lunch – or wander across to the Lake Ferry Hotel for a pub meal. Please note that we meet at the big oak tree outside the Fell Museum at 11.20, for a driver’s briefing. Please feel free to send this on to anyone in other car clubs you think might be interested. We welcome all car club along on the day. We also welcome people who don’t belong to a car club. The day is about driving classic cars and meeting and talking to other enthusiasts; it isn’t about belonging to a car club. The hotel at Lake Ferry has confirmed they will be open and will have food available, or you can bring your own picnic lunch. In the past, we have had English, American, Italian and French cars along. We have had the Constructors Car Club, Corvette Club, Capri Club, Mustang Club and Early American Clubs, as well as other smaller clubs attend. We also invite and welcome all car clubs from the Manawatu and Wairarapa. We sent an earlier email, this is just a follow up to remind you of the date. Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
25th September 2019 Visit to Rick Goodman of Goodman Contracting Limited Waikanae Rick is our guest speaker and will be followed (weather permitting) by a visit to view the Goodman earth moving vehicles and equipment at their Waikanae Plant. Rick Goodman, an Honours Graduate of the University of Life, a man of distinction, a storyteller with a depth of experience and knowledge will speak to us of railway salvage through to earth works and a number of subjects in-between. Together with his entertaining and sometimes hilarious situations he has found himself in over the years, Rick mentions that he has no idea what he is going to talk about until he begins to speak. He also enjoys interaction with his audience. So, ladies, in addition to men’s stuff, there is also something for you to be involved in.
Events of the day: 9.30 – 10. 25 am Relish Café: Morning tea and natter. 10.30 – 11.30 am. Rick Goodman: St Luke’s Church rear room next to the car park 11.45 am – 12.15 pm Goodman Contractors Plant Visit. Optional motor run through Emerald Glen Valley via Motorway and McKay’s crossing to Paraparaumu and Lindale. 1.00 - 1.15 pm Lunch: Anzil Hungarian Café Lindale. At the Waikanae lights, turn and go over the railway into Elizabeth St. Limited parking available In St Luke’s Church immediately over the railway line on the left side. WELLINGTON BRANCH—CALENDAR OF EVENTS Club nights are on the 3rd Tuesday of every month in the Clubrooms, Halford Place, Petone (eastern end of Jackson St) at 7:30pm. The Clubrooms are also open Wednesdays from 9:30 to 12:00, and for Noggin & Natter Fridays from 7:00pm ($1 for biscuits, tea and coffee free) Motorcycle Meetings are usually held on the 4th Monday of the month in the Butcher & Brewer, 175 Jackson Street, Petone, at 7:30pm.
