From the editors laptop Despite a resurgence of the Covid-19 outbreak and another lock down this month, we were able to have our AGM, following social distancing and sanitizing, although I did see a few people getting too close for comfort and they weren't courting couples either!! Please remember to maintain your distance at all times. If you’re hard of hearing, then wear a mask—people will still remember who you are! Don’t be complacent, as this virus will be around for a long time to come. The August meeting was our branch AGM and not a lot of change, except that we now have a new Chairman; Phil Kidd, so welcome Phil, hope you enjoy your tenure. Thanks must go to our outgoing (That’s not an antonym for shy!) Chairman, Bill Pinkham. The editor—bless his little cotton socks— has also stood down. Oh no, but what's this! Here he is back in the saddle, for one last hurrah (or two) until another editor is found. Covert Ops are at this moment working hard to address the problem and are at a Dark Ops Site as we speak, complete with nefarious methods, to attempt to redress the situation. Electricity and water boarding has been mentioned and I thought I heard some squealing earlier, but that just may be the pork chops being prepared for my dinner later. Anyway, watch this space for details about your Branch Newsletter. Serendipity is a wonderful phenomena! I went to the replacement run for the daffodil Rally yesterday, at Queen Elizabeth Park, along with about 10 other cars and it turned out to be a great gathering, despite Covid-19 ruining the original concept. Ray Betteridge had his recent restoration, the 1929 Model A light delivery van, out for the first time. We had lunch with only a few drops of rain and looked at the restoration of Wellington tram No 17. More further on in the newsletter. Well, I’m going to have lunch and a coffee and then later, will tune in to hear if Auckland is staying at level 3 and whether or not, the rest of the country is going to be sacrificed. Later that day: Auckland to remain at 3 for a little while longer and then will join the rest of the country at 2, on the 31st. Happy to have you back again, Auck Birds.

CHAIRMAN’S RAMBLINGS

The year started well with club nights, Sunday runs and the start of Rallying, then it became an exceedingly difficult year for the Wellington Branch due to the worldwide Corona Virus pandemic. This must be the first time in the clubs history that the Clubrooms have had to be closed. The National Executive meeting in March also fell victim to the Pandemic. Then as we starting to get back to regular club nights without restrictions, the pandemic throws another spanner in the works again. Minor Club room maintenance was the only activity available. The VCC National Day for Cancer commonly known as the Daffodil Rally was cancelled and a quieter low-key event was organised only to be cancelled so that the MoH guidelines could be adhered to. I attended the National Executive meeting and AGM in Whanganui on the weekend of 14th -17th August along with 15 other Branch representatives. We all enjoyed the Annual November rally and dinner with our National President Diane Quarry and our 50-year award guests The Biennial Motorcycle Rally was well attended, and a great event enjoyed by all. Sunday Runs are attended by a dedicated group with varying numbers as the places they visit interest some more than others and cover a variety of subjects from Alpacas to tanks (the military kind) The Mid-week runs were exceedingly popular and well organised. Club night speakers continue to be varied and interesting with Brian Christensen managing to find people to talk on a range of subjects. As this year comes to an end I would like to thank the Committee and appointees for their service over the last 14 months, the Rally committee, Sunday and mid-week run facilitators for working so well to plan so many great events only to have to cancel some of them again, and all the other people that do such a great job, no matter how small a task it is, it all goes to making the branch work so well, and it is very much appreciated. We look forward to the next 10 months (to the next AGM) a great November Rally and Dinner and hopefully back to some form of normality, maybe a new form of Normality. Thank you all .

FROM THE CAPTAIN’S TABLE

Our July run was a bit of an experiment in that we asked entrants to identify sections from photos taken along the route. The experiment worked, but printing uses an awful lot of ink!! September 19th is a night rally. Please note that the date has changed from that given last month. The clubrooms will be open from 5.30pm so you can have your dinner there prior to leaving. The briefing will be at 7.00pm with the first car away soon after. We will finish back at the clubrooms, so please bring along something for supper. I know there are some good cooks out there. October 25th we have a run organised by Elsie Ewing and Kirsty Walker, this would have been our Colonial Cup Run a couple of months ago. November 7th is our November Rally. This year it starts in Featherston at the Royal Hotel, and ends at Riversdale, so bring your bucket and spade. The Royal will be open from 9.00am and the cafe at Riversdale has food if you don't want to take a picnic along. Later that evening is our annual dinner with several 50 year awards to be presented. So there you are, get out and about with your club while you can, you just don't know what the future holds. Regards Neale
Club Captains Annual Report. While we are not about to forget this year in a hurry (although most of us want to), event wise it has been pretty good. The Daffodil Rally was an outstanding success with a tidy sum of money collected for the Cancer Society. It was a great disappointment to have to cancel this year’s event, but we will be back next year. November Rally took us back into the city and on to visit the Wrights Hill Fortress, surely one of Wellington’s most hidden treasures. In Addition our waterfront display in conjunction with the City and Sails Museum got us out into view of the public and hopefully a couple of new members. January's Monte Carlo was once again a fun and varied weekend away for those who attended; the Vintage Weekend is becoming a yearly highlight for a lot of people. The wheels sort of fell off for a while then, with first the gymkhana and then other events being cancelled and our calendar of events were reshaped for the next couple of months. Coming Events: Branch Events: As the pre-Covid schedule has been abandoned until the Annual Rally in November, refer to your copy of Motoring Spirit or the website for current club activities. Motorcyclists are welcome on these events. Rubber Duckie Rally 19th September and tour 20th: Those who are going are: Warrick Laing (rally and Sunday of the tour), Paul Switzer, Adrian Macnee, Peter Simpson, Hal O’Rorke, Ashley Blair and Trevor Barnes. Peter will provide the backup vehicle. The Top 10 and tour accommodation has been booked by Trevor, and Trevor has charted a route via Piopio, Ohakune and Waipukurau. Hutt riders meet at the start of Grays Rd, Pauatahanui, at 8:30am and Ashley and Warrick at Ohau, by 9:30. Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride 27th September: From the website https:// www.gentlemansride.com/rides/new+zealand/wellington Same Cause, Same Goal, Different Approach Please note, there are no ride details this year as there are no organised or massparticipation events around the world. We will still be riding this year on Sunday the 27th of September; however, it will look a little different to what we're used to. It has been a difficult year, but the show must go on! The 2020 ride will be a solo event to comply with all local social distancing restrictions. Our focus this year is to bring riders from around the world together, so we may be riding alone, but we will be connected globally by our love of motorcycling and our cause. Canterbury Swap Meet 10th October: If interested in going, please contact Paul Switzer. Wellington Annual Rally 7th November: Planning is under way for this. If you are not taking a car then take your bike (or marshal). Wairarapa Gold Medal Trial 21st November: This is being replaced by a Poker Run. Entry forms have been received. Trevor will circulate via email. Auckland Motorcycle Rally 20th-22nd November: Graeme Crawley has sent out advanced notice of this rally, to be run south of Auckland. Peter Simpson, John Neill, Paul Switzer and Dennis Palmer have indicated interest in this. National Motorcycle Rally and tours, Wairarapa 12th-18th March 2021: Entry forms have been received and circulated to those on our email list. Those intending to go are urged to book accommodation very soon as it will be hard to find due to the number of other events on at the same time. Tip Top North Island Tour 26th March – 4th April 2021: Aaron and Peter have commenced planning for this ten day tour to Cape Reinga and need expressions of interest so that accommodation etc. can be sorted. Contact Aaron as soon as possible. Aaron discussed the planning so far. Because of the total distance there will be some higher mileage days required and the plan is to alternate long and short days. There will be a lay day in Paihia to allow some sightseeing etc. Cont. on pg. 8. 6

I arranged to meet Ian McCulloch at the bottom of Haywards Hill at about 10.00 am. We then went to the Ground Up Café in Pauatahanui and secured some tables as they don’t take bookings. It was just as well, as a good number of cars arrived for coffee and most had a light meal. After the café, we then went to the Glover property along Paekakariki Hill Road. The Glover property was built around 1852 and is largely original but with sympathetic additions to maintain warmth etc. There were two fires going and the conservatory on the side, made it very warm and cosy. Mr. Glover gave us the history of the property and showed us around. The group were able to have lunches they brought with them, in and around the property. There were good photo opportunities as the day was sunny and the gardens were in bloom. By about 2.30 most of us had left.

JULY CLUB NIGHT This was the Branch Annual General Meeting and although numbers attending, were down on past years, there were still enough members to form a quorum. Various reports were given and all were received and accepted into the branch records. From the treasurers report, it would appear the branch is in good health but there will need to be some money spent on repairs to the roof in the next financial year. Approaches to various charities are to be considered, for financial help. Nominations for Officers of the club and positions on committee were held and all current members were re elected except for the Chairman's position which sees Phil Kidd as the new branch chairman by one vote. The position of Editor of the branch newsletter is yet to be filled, as the current Editor was not seeking re election. A motion was put to members regarding the distribution of the newsletter given the rising cost of postage and printing costs. The motion was that the newsletter go out electronically but that a small number of members who do not have email could still continue to have it posted. Other members who wished to have a posted copy, would have to opt in to this. The motion was carried. The meeting was supposed to conclude with a talk by Phil Kidd on his 2019 tour to the U.S.A. but was postponed due to the lateness of the hour. Subject to confirmation this will be Friday October 30th. Next Meeting: At the Butcher and Brewer, 7:30pm. Still, it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good and hopefully the last few months have seen some extra activity in your workshops, with either restoration work or catching up on some deferred maintenance. I can at least say that the 20/60 no longer leaks coolant and the rear lights are considerably improved. As to the future, the rally committee is still working hard to give you a variety of interesting events for the coming year, which hopefully will be without any further enforced hiccups along the way. Finally, thank you to everyone who attended any of our events, if you enjoyed them, tell your mates, if you didn't, tell me. And of course a big thank you to all the members of the rally committee, I couldn't do this without you. Neale. August Kapiti Mid Week Run

This month was the first since lockdown and it had been decided to only have a get together to allow people to have a relaxed time without having to move on to another location. So the Boundary Tap & Kitchen was booked for Wednesday 26th and then came Covid-19 and back to level 2. Under level 2 the pub opens at 2pm, so an agreement was reached for us to arrive from 1pm instead of noon. Twenty five of us turned up before 1pm and waited around for the pub to open – which it didn’t! So I rang them and it turned out they had the booking written in for Thursday. The poor lady frantically called in some staff but the group had already booked to go to Fisherman’s Table instead. Needless to say, once settled in, there we were, the usual happy bunch who enjoyed the (mostly fish) meals. Trevor Barnes.

‘Highland Fling Rally’ 24th – 26th April 2021 NEWSLETTER
18 August 2020 Information As I write this short update our largest city is currently in Level 3 lockdown, while the rest of us are abiding to Level 2 rules. A bit of a cliché I know, but we really are living in uneasy times and all trying our best to stay upbeat and project calm, without having any idea from one day to the next what the outlook is going to bring us. In the meantime, with trepidation we must all remain positive, and carry on as best we can with the planning of our future motoring events. Therefore, the organisers of the Highland Fling Rally have great pleasure in confirming to you the Highland Fling Rally is scheduled and booked in the VCC ‘Calendar of Events’ to take place Anzac Weekend 2021! My joint ‘Organiser Extraordinaire’ Alastair Jones sends this very positive message to you all. …”It has been most heartening to receive such a large number of emails and phone-calls of encouragement urging us not to give up on running “Highland Fling,” and many of our erstwhile entrants even asked to leave their monies with us until next year. No doubt this was to ensure they had a place in the “Fling” There was even quite a number who asked whether it was possible to reschedule it to later 2020, since the thought of having to wait until 2021 was a bit much to bear. On that note we didn’t consider it possible to fit it into an already jam-packed motoring event calendar, and as well late Autumn delivers superb colours, which are bound to captivate the considerable number of the ‘tender gender’ who have indicated they will be attending. All this preamble is to assure you it will be Anzac Weekend in 2021 even if we only have NZ entrants. Inevitably this dreaded virus has had an effect in a small way on our accommodation providers in Taihape as one of the smaller providers has been bought by the Government, for emergency housing, and Taihape Motels has been sold by Con (the Greek) who was such a good supporter of car club users, but alas to no avail the new owner is keen for a booked out weekend! There was an initial concern that lack of business at our Saturday lunch-stop bought about by canned tourism might cause them to shut-up shop, however, they seem to be made of backcountry “hardiness” and are hanging right on in there. On that, not all who would have been involved this year have been told we will be back at the same time next year and keener than ever because of having to wait. With the long wait through “lockdown” I am sure your time will have been well spent in going over your vehicles which will eliminate all involuntary stops”

Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run ( Last Wednesday of the month)
30th September 2020 Visit to Foxton MAVtech; The National Museum of Audio Visual Arts & Sciences Of NZ Trust Inc. and then Mrs Nubbs’ Café. Today we’re going to have a guided tour of the museum followed by a film selected by the archivist to be of interest to vintage car owners. The cost is $10 pp which Hal will collect as you arrive. After this, we have a booking at Mrs Nubbs’ Café in the main street, not far away. Programme: 10am: Please gather promptly for the tour and film at MAVtech, Coronation Hall. Avenue Rd. Foxton. The hall is on your left just before you turn into the main street. There is plenty of parking on the road. 1pm: Lunch at Mrs Nubbs’ café, 72 Main St. Foxton. It’s opposite the New World supermarket. Although this looks like a small café, there is a large conservatory at the rear where we have tables reserved – just walk on through past the counter. Mrs Nubbs has asked that we pre-order lunches so, when you let us know that you’re coming, we’ll email a menu. Please let us know what you’d like by Sunday Sept 27th. WELLINGTON BRANCH—CALENDAR OF EVENTS Club nights are on the 3rd Tuesday of every month in the Clubrooms, Halford Place, Petone (eastern end of Jackson St) at 7:30pm. The Clubrooms are also open Wednesdays from 9:30 to 12:00, and for Noggin & Natter Fridays from 7:00pm ($1 for biscuits, tea and coffee free) Motorcycle Meetings are usually held on the 4th Monday of the month in the Butcher & Brewer, 175 Jackson Street, Petone, at 7:30pm.
