Well, labour weekend has gone already and only 8 weeks to Christmas! The last month has seen the Manawatu swap meet come and go, where a few extra dollars were made for the clubs’ coffers. This is always a good one to go to as it is inside so the threatening weather isn’t a problem. Then the BQQ for the North Cape to Bluff tour group and the Austin Register, which was a good night for the small group of Wellington Branch members that attended. The following weekend was the Christchurch swap meet. The road down the Kaikoura coast is still a construction zone, but the major work appears to have been mostly completed; now there is only the finishing work to do, It is turning into quite a pleasant drive again, a massive job. Well here comes November and the Rally and Dinner. Our National President will be attending again as we have some 50 year badges to hand out. I look forward to seeing a good turnout for both the day and the night. On Sunday, there is the display at Queens Wharf; the last time we used this location was a great success so let’s have more of the same, raising the profile of the VCC and maybe attracting some additional members. Later in the month, there is the Cambridge swap meet. That’s all from me this month. Happy motoring, Bill.

Welcome to November, with any sort of luck the November Rally, Annual dinner and the Queens Wharf display will have been successful. I must take the opportunity of thanking everyone who assisted with putting these 3 events on for us.
The Heritage run was, at least for Joanne and me, a bit of an eye opener as to just how much construction work is going on in the Hutt Valley and Wainuiomata areas.
Coming up we have a few things for you to plan for, the Sunbeam Car Club run to Lake Ferry is always a highlight on the calendar; it’s a good relaxed day out. The children’s and then the big peoples Christmas parties are equally popular and well worth attending.
Have you made your motel bookings for the Monte Carlo Rally and Whanganui Vintage Weekend, on over Wellington Anniversary weekend in January? Time to do that right now as Whanganui starts to fill up for this event which seems to grow and improve every year.
One final thing, it’s just a reminder on phones. I realise that these days we are almost all reliant on our mobile devices, me included, but could you please remember during our meetings, briefings etc. to put them on a silent mode and if you must answer the thing , would you mind leaving the room or area before doing so. It’s just good manners really.

The end of the year is fast approaching and so Christmas cards should have all been written up by now, and maybe even sent! Pressy lists should be drawn up by now also, with maybe some fine tuning here and there. As I write this, tomorrow (30th) is the last day for paying the club fees to claim the discount, so I would hope you’ve all managed that. This months newsletter will be out after the November Rally and dinner, so I will be featuring that in the Dec/Jan edition. I understand that Tom’s Tour was a really good weekend and the local Heritage Run was also a lot of fun. Who new that during the war, the Government stored Gold Bullion under a house in Rata St. Naenae. Must have been a State House-wonder if the tenants knew!! Rugby World Cup-’nuff said. Rugby League-’nuff said. Netball-’nuff said. Cricket has started and so has the Spring/Summer weather (????) so let’s look forward to some great Classic motoring.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT 21ST OCTOBER: Trevor Barnes Past Events: Taranaki Rubber Duckie, Saturday 21st September: Peter Simpson gave a brief rundown of the event and the 5 day tour that 5 members did, to and from the rally. The tour went from wellington to New Plymouth then home via Hunterville, Waipukurau, highway 52 and through Masterton. Motorcycle night at the Club Night, October 15th: This was bike night at the clubrooms. Four members, Trevor Barnes with his 1930 Sunbeam and 1913 BSA, Paul Switzer with his Royal Enfield, James Chambers with his 4 cylinder Henderson and Allan Burgess with his 1967 Matchless, all gave a short talk on their bikes. Coming Events: October-November: Spontaneous rides each month. Peter Simpson will email for each ride. Wairarapa Gold Medal Trial, November 30th: Contrary to the date in the National annual calendar, the date for this rally is now the 30th of November. Detailed planning will be done at the next meeting on 25th November. A show of hands indicated that at least 8 with the possibility of a couple more, will attend this rally. Xmas Ride Friday December 20th: Aaron will organise this. 10am at Brown Owl. The 2020 Biennial Rally 25-26 January 2020: Planning is in hand. Entry forms are now available. The route needs checking so if you can help Trevor test the planned route, get in touch with him. Aaron’s South Island Tour 20-26th March 2020: Friday 20th: 5pm sailing to Blenheim. 21st: To Rangiora. 22-24th: Akaroa. 25th: Kaikoura via inland route. The tour deposit of $200 is to be paid by November with the balance of the $343 tour charge by January.

The first and last time I went to the NZ Police Museum, I took our nine year old grandson with some other children. They keenly played detective with the mysteries on display, and dressed up in the uniforms as well as climbing on the police motorbike. Well, this time we had 23 adults; members from Wellington and Horowhenua and I don’t think any of them dressed up! We had a beautiful day for the October run and gathered firstly in the Kaizen cafe by the Pataka Art+ Museum. Lots of chatter, good food and coffee for everyone before driving over to the museum. Nick, the Curator, gave us an interesting tour. It's amazing to see how the uniforms have changed over the years and are still changing. For instance, the first bullet-proof vests were incredibly heavy with a lot of weight around the waist but now pockets near the shoulders distribute the weight more evenly and must be easier for the police, driving a car. A highlight is the photograph of three early women officers at the races, there to uncover betting crimes, dressed to the nines, fashionable hats and all. The weapons owned by the Aramoana gunman, David Gray, are displayed as are the chilling photographs of Jan Molenaar's wired house in Napier. The museum will be worth visiting again in the near future; it's 40 years since the Erebus disaster and a new exhibit was being built while we were visiting. The police had a major involvement in the identification of the deceased after the crash. It was a lovely day out with a great group of people. Ann O’Rorke.

OCTOBER CLUB NIGHT As is usual at this time of year, our October Club Night is for our Motorcycle members to bring along some of their bikes and to talk about them, their history and ownership stories. Peter Simpson was M.C on the night, and no, it doesn’t stand for Motor Cycle! Firstly, Peter introduced Paul Switzer, who had brought along his 1937 Royal Enfield. Paul talked a bit about the marque and how it originated in the U.K but was also built in India, under licence and bikes then exported to the U.K. Now, the company is owned by Eicher Motors in India, who claims that R.E is the oldest global motorcycle brand in continuous production. Peter then introduced Alan Burgess and his 1967 Matchless 750cc G15 CSR. This bike has a Norton Atlas engine and if I remember rightly, from what Alan said, Norton became amalgamated with Matchless and these bikes could be badge engineered to be a Norton, or a Matchless and even BSA. Next came James Burgess, who showed us his magnificent 1929 Henderson 1300cc KJ inline 4 Which was a favourite ride of some US Police Forces, notably the LAPD, who had 800 of them. It was made with a reverse gear because it was set up to take a sidecar. James has done a great job restoring what was in his words, a basket case. Next up was Trevor Barnes who had brought along his 1930 Sunbeam 350cc and his Brother Robins 1913 BSA 550cc. The Barnes boys have a very long history of motorcycles and this includes their older Brother, Barry. Robin restored the BSA whilst he was at school and he finished it in 1959 and it is in virtually the same condition now. Trevor acquired the Sunbeam in 1971. Older brother Barry did a restoration (repaint & plating) in time for the 1975 National Motorcycle Rally in Hawkes Bay. From 1978 the bike was off the road until 2013, when the engine was reconditioned and new exhaust pipes fitted. It has since been used locally, but also to attend the Southland Branch Arrowtown Motorcycle Rally, and this year's Mail Run from Taupo to Napier. Left: Peter Simpson introducing Motor cycle night. October Sunday Run: Richard Davies Visit To Paekakariki Train Museum Ian McCulloch had arranged a visit to the Museum, so we decided to meet at a café in the village. As there were two, and we didn’t know which one, it was a bit like a Swiss weather vane, with doors opening and closing, but eventually we found each other at the curiously named Perching Parrot. Those that did come, were Ian McCulloch, 29 Chrysler. Selwyn Warren, Mazda MX5. Myself in the 58 Metropolitan. Paul Switzer, Hal O’Rorke, Tony Walsh, Ivan Gardiner and Rex and Lyn Howard. After a very nice morning tea and a chat outside in the sun, we walked over to the Museum, only to find it was shut! Apparently has been that way for about 6 months, due to earthquake strengthening. Meant to open in July, but didn’t say which July. Anyway, after a talk and some photos, lunch was had and then some of us departed for the Tramway Museum at McKays Crossing, getting there about 1.30, where we were met by Steve Porter who escorted us around and gave a most interesting and informative talk on the old trams, some of which were in various stages of restoration. We were able to see first hand what had been discussed at a recent club night. Thank you to Steve and to Ian for another great Sunday run, even if the wheels fell off a bit.

CHILDRENS CHRISTMAS PARTY 2019
SUNDAY 1st DECEMBER 1.00PM TO 3.00PM
This is a great event for all club members’ children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. There will be a Goodie Bag per Child, Craft Tables, Face Painting, write a letter to Santa ( These are posted out so make sure they have an address on them ) Nail Painting, Decorated biscuit, Fire Engine rides, Vintage Car Rides, Bouncy Castle and of course a visit from Santa. To help with the cost of the castle, a $5 fee per child will be collected. A $10 present per child is to be wrapped and clearly named and put in the sacks in the kitchen. Help is needed on the 20th November to set up the rooms. I don’t like climbing ladders! 10.00 am: please and morning tea provided for the workers. Help will also be needed on the day. Custers` Last Stand
Custer was a lonely guy who owned a Model A.A car he`d bought to woo his bride-alas she did not stay. with tyres bald and full of rust ,the headlights looked askance and when he tried to hurry, it did St Vitus dance. He`d come to town each Saturday from way up in the hills and pay his bills with firewood - to ease the grocer`s chills. A pint he`d drink all by himself while leaning on the bar and thank the landlord quietly and buy his weekly jar. One Sunday came and Monday too -no sign of Custer`s A. The grocer and the Landlord too were showing great dismay. They sent out John and Billy boy to see if he was well-(the grocer needed firewood to warm his comely Nell) So through the bush bound tracks they went to see where he had gone and found his hut all cold and dark as if he wasn`t home. They pushed the door and walked on in and found to their surprise, poor Custer lying on the bed, a glazed look in his eyes. He must have known his time had come ,a note was by his side “Just take me in my Model A on this my final ride. I`ve nowt to pay the final bills- so give the man my car. and cast my ashes to the wind and scatter them afar”. It seemed unfair to take him thus to make his final run, They`d dress him in his Sunday best before they went to town. They looked at him all cold and stiff- the rigor was set in, with odour from his musty clothes, yes, things were looking grim. They stood him in the parlour and tried him to undress. Alas his vest was stuck to him with hairs through from his chest. They pulled and tugged but ‘twas in vain- they worked up quite a sweat. They`d need to find a way to cut the clothing from his chest. Well, in the shed John found some shears, they`d seen much better days, but bluntness wouldn’t worry Cus`- he wouldn't feel the pain. They clipped and snipped below the vest and slowly cleared the mess. They even lopped a nipple off the poor old buggers` chest. Now standing in the parlour, bare, he really caused dismay. They`d need to find his Sunday Best to send him on his way. They searched the cupboards and the drawers, but no garments lay around 'til tucked up in a corner shelf a silky garment found. They spread it on the table there, it gave them quite a fright. ‘twas, smooth and pink and slippery soft- a nightie for his bride. (She`d left him on the wedding night, this garment left behind She never more was seen again-his one and only bride.) Well, be it so, they had no choice but use this slinky thing. They hauled it down his now bald chest to cover every thing.
This task now done they best make haste- the A, it had dull lights. The challenge now to get to town for Custer's` final ride. They tried with might to push him in the front seat of the car, but rigor it defeated them before they got too far. A rope they slung on yonder branch and hoisted Custer high and dropped him in the dickie seat to say his last goodbye. He stood erect in rigor there-his feet upon the floor. They roped him to the window frame and through the drivers door. As off they went towards the town, the A was down to two, but seemed to know that this last time it needed to get through. The town folk came on every side to see what caused the fuss. Old Custer was still standing there all clad in ladies stuff. This last ride for a lonely man, it wasn`t all that grand. The A had played a vital part in Custer's` Final Stand. Ray Betteridge

Annual Lake Ferry Excursion Dear Classic Car Club member/car enthusiast 2019 marks the 39th anniversary of the annual Lake Ferry Excursion, organised by the Sunbeam Car Club of NZ (Wellington). To make sure everyone has this date down early to save conflicts with other events, the Lake Ferry Excursion is always the 2nd Saturday in December. This year that makes it the 14th of December. As always, we meet at the Fell Museum at 11am for an 11.30 departure from Featherston to Lake Ferry, where we meet to talk over lunch – or wander across to the Lake Ferry Hotel for a pub meal. Please note that we meet at the big oak tree outside the Fell Museum at 11.20, for a driver’s briefing. Please feel free to send this on to anyone in other car clubs you think might be interested. We welcome all car club along on the day. We also welcome people who don’t belong to a car club. The day is about driving classic cars and meeting and talking to other enthusiasts; it isn’t about belonging to a car club. The hotel at Lake Ferry has confirmed they will be open and will have food available, or you can bring your own picnic lunch. In the past, we have had English, American, Italian and French cars along. We have had the Constructors Car Club, Corvette Club, Capri Club, Mustang Club and Early American Clubs, as well as other smaller clubs attend. We also invite and welcome all car clubs from the Manawatu and Wairarapa. We sent an earlier email, this is just a follow up to remind you of the date. Kapiti Coast Mid Week Run (last Wednesday of the month)
27th November 2019 This advertisement is being written before we know whether the word ‘rugby’ brings us sorrow or jubilation but, whatever the outcome, our November’s run is taking us to a very special place for aficionados and museum junkies. The NZ Rugby Museum in Palmerston North is viewed as the leading sports museum in New Zealand, with a collection in excess of 40,000 items, world class displays and activities and strong visitor numbers. As someone who was fortunate enough to be invited to the 2011 opening of the current museum (and who has no interest in rugby - Ann), I can attest to the fascinating displays and activities for both fans and non-fans. WELLINGTON BRANCH—CALENDAR OF EVENTS Club nights are on the 3rd Tuesday of every month in the Clubrooms, Halford Place, Petone (eastern end of Jackson St) at 7:30pm. The Clubrooms are also open Wednesdays from 9:30 to 12:00, and for Noggin & Natter Fridays from 7:00pm ($1 for biscuits, tea and coffee free) Motorcycle Meetings are usually held on the 4th Monday of the month in the Butcher & Brewer, 175 Jackson Street, Petone, at 7:30pm.
