CHAIRMAN’S RAMBLINGS

I attended the VCC Executive meeting in Wellington on 24 March along with 40 others made up of branch Management committee, branch delegates, observers and helpers. Did you know the VCC has 8512 members (276 of those in Wellington) that own 20228 vehicles. Vero insurance paid out $36945 to the VCC in commission. The North Island Club Captain is looking at a north Island version of the Irishman Rally for 2020, to be based in the central north island and likely to be called a Highland Frolic. Thirty four 60 year badges and Certificates have been presented . Twenty two VCC members entered the last Targa Time trial and our members are invited to this year’s one between Rotorua and Palmerston North, with members getting a substantial discount on their entry fees. There are plans for a National Vintage Rally to be held in 2020 in the North Island. 12 month WoF’s for older cars are still on the back burner. The VCC Facebook page has gained 1300 followers. Check it out https:// www.facebook.com/search/top/?q=vcc%20nz&epa=SEARCH_BOX While Electric Vehicles are knocking at the door, and some manufacturers are heading that way, there is still a glimmer of hope, as both Shell and Mobil are working on alternatives to Diesel. Let’s hope that they look at Petrol as well, or touring will be a thing of the past. At the best, you will travel today and walk tomorrow, while your car is on charge for 16 hours. Kevin Clarkson, the Beaded Wheels Chairman asked that when sending photographs, please think of the good photos with high resolution, preferably with cars and people in them, and please provide info on who, where and what the photo is about. A number of items were discussed including the 2021 international Rally. The Executive copped a bit of criticism from the organisers for not doing much to promote the event. They are right; we haven’t done a good job of that, so now at the top of my to-do list, so watch this space. In the meantime, check out the web site http:// www.historicmotoring.co.nz/ We have had an offer from Greg or Tony to talk to the branch about it if we so wish. Another hot topic was the National Motorcycle Rally 2021? The M/C group had requested that we bring up the subject. The rally had been moved on the long-term calendar to 2022 as there is a ruling in place that there would be no national rallies held in the same year as an international rally. After much discussion, a motion was put forward to make an exception to the rule for the event to take place in 2021. This was passed. NZ had a change to its Firearms laws following the Christchurch incident. These new laws were passed in urgency and interested parties had 2 days to provide submissions before the law was passed. Think of that from a motoring perspective. What if there was a serious incident with a pre-2000 vehicle and the Government decided that the way to stop it happening again was to abolish 6 month warrants (that would make all pre 2000 vehicles unfit for registration. Could 8500 VCC members and another 5-10000 other car club members stop it when 250 000 Firearms licence holders had no influence. Food for thought! Bill 3

Coming up fast is August, when we will once again, hold the “Daffodil Rally for Cancer". This is a very worthy cause to get behind; very, very few of us have not been affected either directly or indirectly by cancer. The format will be similar to last year’s event, which was very successful and a great day out. To this end we need the support and attendance of you all. Obviously bring your car, bike truck or whatever; if you have a couple of mobile vehicles, see if you can get someone else to bring one for you, tell everyone you can about the event and get them along (with their wallets!). We are inviting other one make clubs along too, but don't just rely on the rally committee to contact all of them, if you belong to another club, or know someone else who is, invite them along. We need to get the word out about this event and word of mouth is one of the best ways. In addition, we will need your help on the day with the collecting of donations and car marshalling, along with several other things, so be prepared to help if you are asked, or better still, offer. Let’s make this a day to remember and help make a difference. Regards Neale

This one will again be centred on Upper Hutt, meeting at the Mayfair Café, Main Street, Upper Hutt at approximately 10.30am. I’ve been trying to organise several different places to visit however we are now very welcome to visit a collection of what I would call classic cars, in Upper Hutt and be given a guided tour by the owner. There are probably about 8 or 9 cars. One of our members, I believe, will be very impressed because there is a 1947 or 48 Ford Super Deluxe Sedan in perfect condition. I look forward to seeing lots of people at 10.30am, Mayfair Café, Upper Hutt, on Sunday. Ian McCulloch

Stan Garmonsway has made a very welcome donation to our early years. Photographs of our first annual rally (1958) and second annual rally (1959), also photographs of many events up to the year 2000. We have other photographs of Branch events from Stan in the past and have added them to the Branch records, thank you Stan. Brian Christensen and I have been working on conversion of VHS tapes to digital format. It is noticeable the deterioration of colours over the years. If you have any VHS tapes I suggest that you have them transferred to digital format ASAP. Some of your family records could be on old tapes and could be lost forever.

Oh my, is it that time again! There seems to be something wrong with my memory recently. I woke up this morning and looked out the window and couldn't work out what was amiss and then it dawned on me! It was pouring with rain and the wind was blowing a gale at 120 KPH. It must have been months since this has happened in Wellington, so I thought I was quietly losing it, but no, not yet. Amazing weather, but it seems it all comes to an end at Queens Birthday weekend. Quiet time just now, but there was a good Ladies Rally (was it the rally that was good, or the ladies?) and the Leprechaun run was a “little” belter, The Colonial Cup run is coming up, but so is the big event on our calendar, the Daffodil Rally For Cancer, in August. Our chance to profile and raise funds for an important cause. There is quite a bit of it in this issue, but that is the way of things. Plenty of other stuff too. Ed.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT 27TH MAY: Trevor Barnes Past Events: Wairarapa Reliability Trial, 4-5 May 2019 - “The Far Side”: Only Ian Munro and Trevor Barnes attended this run. Eleven bikes and 15 people attended, with the overnight destination, Sixtus Lodge. The run had quite a few gravel sections. Leaving Clareville, the first leg criss-crossed SH2 to Mangatainoka and the Tui Brewery Café, then back to Pahiatua and over the track to Ashhurst, for a compulsory fuel stop before taking back roads to Cheltenham for a welcoming, generous lunch. The afternoon section used sealed and gravel back roads through Kimbolton and Rangiwahia, before turning on to gravel to head to Sixtus Lodge in the Ruahine Range. Used to fairly primitive accommodation on this annual run, I was pleased to find a good quality facility with an amazingly good kitchen. It was dormitory bunkrooms for most, though I scored a more private room shared with Neville Taylor. After a roast meal cooked by Kathy, Angela and Linda, the “BSA Cup” was competed for via a motorcycle knowledge quiz prepared by organiser Barry Wells. On Sunday we rode back to Ashhurst via Pohangina to refuel, and then it was over the Pahiatua Track to Pongaroa via Makuri for lunch, before riding to Masterton via Route 52; Over 300 miles, all in fine weather. Thanks to Barry & Linda Wells for organising and being the backup and to the others who contributed to the event planning and execution. Casual Run, Thursday 23rd May: Peter Simpson emailed the group for a ride through Wainuiomata to Moores Valley and the coast. Five riders enjoyed the ride, which finished at the Holmdale Café. Coming Events: Taranaki Rubber Duckie, Saturday 21st September: The date has been confirmed. Aaron’s South Island Tour March 2020: The dates will be 20-25 March subject to available accommodation. This trip will be to Rangiora, Akaroa (3 days) then back via Hurunui and Kaikoura. Aaron needs to know your intention to come, so if you weren’t at the May meeting contact, him sooner rather than later, then he can finalise bookings - Akaroa is very tight for accommodation. Planning for the 2020 Biennial Rally: Date of the Biennial: 25-26 January 2020 (Auckland anniversary w/e). Admin: Peter Simpson; In hand: Prizes & trophies: Warrick Laing and John Neill; In hand. Castrol and Red Baron have been secured. Advertising: Ashley Blair; In hand. Pub Charity: Hal O’Rorke: Was waiting confirmation of the rally proceeding: To apply for 60 shirts. Catering: Peter has obtained a price from Valley Caterers: Dinner $29 and Sunday BBQ $15. Route Organiser: Including Marshalls, route notes, and Sunday ride: Peter and Trevor have explored some route ideas, but still do not have a person to manage the routes on the day. Two Sunday run suggestions were Whitemans Valley Film Set and Titahi Bay to Ohariu. Other suggestions are welcome. National Motorcycle Rally 2021: Peter Simpson and Trevor Barnes, still to meet with the committee for the Wairarapa 2021 National Motorcycle Rally, to provide support for organising it. May Kapiti Mid Week Run

On the night before the run, it poured, it blew and finally, it thundered and the dog fled under a chair! Oh no, we thought; our visit to Wainuiomata, to Shea Stackhouse and his wife, Lena, might be a washout. But then we woke to a blue sky and sunshine - wonderful. Shea had reorganised his blacksmith’s forge to seat all our members and there was a wide display of his knives, magazines and Lena’s beautiful netsuke: tiny detailed carvings mostly in bone. Shea lit his forge and proceeded to bring wrought iron up to red hot, to make a leaf shaped hook. Over and over the metal was heated and hammered, changing a rod into a curved leaf with the necessary fastening points. Then a much larger steel billet was brought to a higher temperature and the magnificent power hammer was employed to hammer and stretch the metal. American in manufacture, the hammer is over 100 years old but still works perfectly and is impressive to watch – and hear! It stands about 2m tall and it’s been quite an exercise to move into position. Shea showed with black and white plasticine, just how Damascus, or pattern welded steel, is produced; it would have been too time-consuming to make the real thing, but the plasticine worked well, to showcase the layers and patterns. Lena then took us through the origins of netsuke and described how she carves her tiny, often Pokemon, figures that give a nod to the Japanese history. Netsuke were made to fasten the cord on men’s obi (sash) tied around their kimono, on which to hang small objects. Thus a genuine netsuke will have two small holes for the cord, at its rear. Lena makes her own carving tools and also works with Shea to carve handles for his knives, usually for commissions and exhibitions. Thanks Shea and Lena. A delightful morning completed with lunch at the Petone Working Men’s Club.

MAY CLUB NIGHT Jenny and John Jackson entertained us with a talk and slide show of their trip to Europe last year, to take in things Riley. As you may know, Jenny and John are into RM’s. They did not take a car overseas, but borrowed one whilst there. Their trip started in Singapore and we were able to see via photos, some of the architecture, especially the Marina Bay Sands hotel and the tremendous views. On to Europe and a few towns and rivers, where strange swimming habits occur! but as John has always wanted to visit the Cite de L’Automobile, the Bugatti Museum, in Mulhouse, France, this was a must. Many, many fine examples of Bugatti and other makes. Obviously some time was taken up with that, and why not? They were able to see some local classic cars outside, as some of the locals were visiting. Once in England, they went to the Lake District and specifically, Windermere, where a group of RM people based themselves at a school grounds for some days, arriving at their destination independently. Because there are difficulties in rallying cars in Europe due to traffic, and the need for traffic management plans, most get-togethers are static. They were able to go on one of the sightseeing boats and sailed the length of Windermere. They also were able to spend time catching up with friends. During that time, they visited the Anderton Boat Lift, on the Trent and Mersey Canal, in Cheshire. This is a 50’ vertical double caisson lift that can raise and lower two boats to the River Weaver below. Built in 1875, it was used by working canal boats until it closed due to corrosion, in 1983. It was restored by volunteers, between 2001 and 2002, and has a very impressive visitor centre. John was lucky enough to be given a ride on a Narrow Boat, down and back up again. Next, the pair went to St. Ives, in Cornwall and to the Babbacombe Model Village, which is in Torquay, Devon. This is a truly amazing place, built by Tom Dobbins in 1963. Amazing miniature towns that look very real, as their photos showed. They also visited the Babbacombe Cliff Railway, a funicular railway, built in 1923, by the Torquay Tramway Company, who commissioned Waygood-Otis, the elevator company, to engineer and build it. This is a very popular Tourist attraction in the area, and is open all year round. Thanks Jenny and John, for an entertaining evening. Ed.

Ladies Rally Report 26th May.

I do not want to drive the truck! I do NOT want to drive the truck! Okay, I drive a manual occasionally, but a 1946 Ford V8 Jailbar!!!!! What about all the love and attention that has been lavished on that vehicle not to mention the money, and the teenage boys who live next door who pop in to see it – they have even given it a nickname – Big Blue. How would they all feel if I dinged it? But Bruce was insistent, and it did make sense to be able to drive it in an emergency. So for three days before the Ladies’ Rally I had driving lessons starting in Jackson Street. By the third I was driving to Eastbourne and back. Bruce had the patience of an angel as I crunched through the gears. (Was Lucifer not once an Angel? Ed) And the position of the brake pedal, so much higher than the accelerator; that still worried me – an emergency braking!!!! But there I was – at the wheel of Big Blue, with a few other game wives/partners/ daughters of VCC members – off on the rally. We headed up the east side of Lower Hutt, stopping at Taita’s Christ Church to answer questions. To Wallaceville to the Blockhouse complete with gun ports and more historic questions and finally a stop at Golder’s Cottage at 707 Fergusson Drive, built by John Golder in 1877 for his wife Jane and their 12 children. Their descendants lived there until 1985. Our last section was not a history lesson but literature, as we drove around the Poets’ Block in Upper Hutt. My gear changing was tested as Bruce noted down the names of the streets, so it was a relief to pull over to answer questions about the poets that feature in the street names. Longfellow was easy to identify as the focus of a Neil Diamond serenade, as was the Kate Blanchett film of Shakespeare in Love. The two lordly poets – Byron and Tennyson – were a little harder but questions hinted at the answers so I was quietly confident that we would do well. Bruce, who really didn’t care a stuff about English poets, dutifully noted down all the answers, making sure to get the right spelling, and we carried on back to the Clubrooms and oh! the relief of finishing off a difficult drive for me. The winner of the best baking was John Blakemore with his delicious sliced chocolate log full of nuts and ginger. The surprise was the winner of the rally – us. A spelling mistake was all that separated us from Stephanie McGreevy and Shaun Leahy and Stephanie has a degree in English Literature. I can’t however make a claim that a degree in Architecture is superior, because I am sure it was Bruce’s dutiful navigation, and in particular his care in correctly copying down street names that didn’t mean a thing to him. Thanks to Alastair and Angelica for setting the rally. A hint to next year’s bake-off participants: Bruce doesn’t like chocolate!!

May Sunday Run: Richard Davies We didn't have anywhere specific to go this particular Sunday, but we still met up at the Mayfair CafĂŠ first. It was a perfect day and so we set of around the Eastern Bays to Eastbourne, where we sat out in the sun and had our lunch. Last of the Summer wine does come to mind. Photos, taken by Lyn Howard, are featured on the cover of this months Newsletter.

Fifteen vehicles arrived at the locked gate on Wainui Coast Rd to resume the annual search for the elusive Little Green Men. Don and Trish Morgan, who have recently re-joined the Club, had arranged a route and requisite keys to closed gates, so the first gate was opened and we slowly wound our way up a steep driveway, stopping for photos of the amazing vistas that unfolded as we rose. In due course, after 30 minutes or so, we reached the top of Cattle Ridge and the home of Nigel Thomas and his family. At an altitude of 470m, this is the highest house in the Wellington region. Sweeping views across deep green valleys, over ridges and then Wellington Harbour and the City, did not stop there, but swept on over Cook Strait to the Kaikoura Coast. WOW! Reluctantly we departed, taking only 15 minutes to travel down to their gate, where we then turned left to continue around the coast to arrive at another locked gate to the Orongorongo Station. The gate was duly opened and after travelling over pastures the road deteriorated to a rough track that meandered through the rocky outcrops and large rocks that define this exposed southern coastline. We rounded a bend and travelled North(ish) around the side of Palliser Bay which was richly adorned with white caps. Don then found a sheltered spot near Barney’s whare and we stopped for our humble repast. Out came thermoses, nosebags, windbags and a thermette and the motley bunch were able to tell the usual lies as they watched Mary collect poo in a plastic bag. In due course we returned along the track to civilisation after a great and well organised trip. Thanks to Don and Trish and welcome back to the Club. p.s. we did not see any Little Green Men. I remain unconvinced of their existence but probably like others, will turn out next year to resume the search. Ray. Photos on the back cover. Ed. 10

Colonial Cup Rally. Sunday 23rd June. Meet in Porirua in the car park on the corner of Parumoana Street and Wineera Drive. Briefing at 9.45am first car away at 10.00am. You may like to come early and have a look at at the Pataka Museum, or have a coffee in the coffee shop. The run will take us through some places we haven’t been for a while. Bring your own lunch as the run will end back at the clubrooms. Plenty of take-aways in Petone if you would prefer. Tea and coffee provided. Targa 2019 Time Trial When: Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd Nov 2019. Where: Central and Lower/Mid North Island – Refer Draft Event Programme. What and Why: Outstanding opportunity for VCC members to drive iconic North Island roads as a time trial. This is not a race, but rather an exercise in safe, precise driving to maintain a set average speed over closed tarmac stages (Similar to a regularity trial). It’s also a great opportunity for VCC branches to raise public awareness of the VCC and hopefully attract some new and younger members. Cost: Substantial 30% discount off standard entry fee for VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible cars = $4,790 reduced to $3,353 + Medical Levy and RallySafe. (All entry fees are + GST). Following on from our successful display last Year at QE2 Park, we have again booked the same venue. The Tramways Museum and Kapiti Stables will also participate. WE NEED EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE! (All cars are eligible irrespective of age or club affiliation.) Last year we had over 150 vehicles and raised over $4000.00!!! We can do better, how about 200 cars and over $5000.00 raised! Help Wanted We have a 12 yr. old son who loves cars and we’re wondering if there is anyone willing to take him under their wing (maybe restoration of a car/ mechanical skills) he is homeschooled so available during week or weekends, whatever suits. Looking for around 2 hours a week if possible; he is very polite, quiet and kind and unfortunately none of us in the family have the skills or money to support him in his passion. If you can’t help, do you know of anyone who may be good for us to make contact with? It’s basically hands on experience we are looking for, like a grandfather role, I’m sure a lot of your members grew up with someone in their family, sharing their passion, so hopefully someone would like to pass knowledge on to next generations.
