From the editors laptop Well, here we are again, another month on and now in level 1 of the Covid Pandemic and slowly realising that this is the new normal, and will be for a good long while—maybe a couple of years. Just this last week, our bubble burst with the expected reoccurrence of a number of new cases. It is unfair, in my opinion, to blame the handling of the isolation problems on the Government. Their responsibility now yes, to fix it, but in every business in NZ, there is at least one employee who doesn't do what is required of him or her, resulting in a botch up. It is up to everybody to act responsibly and do their jobs as they are required to do; security staff, people charged with testing as per the guidelines set out for them; These are the people responsible, so until that is addressed, we still need to be very careful and sanitise and use the QR check ins and registers wherever we go. I didn't attend the June Club night, as I am still wary of groups in close quarters however on Sunday, I did attend my first monthly get-together of the Mazda MX5 Club Wellington and Kapiti Branch, as I have recently joined the National Club and had yet to meet with local members. This usually takes the form of a monthly run and so we met at the Judgeford Golf Club café, called Flightys, at Pauatahanui There was a turn out of some 35 MX5’s in the car park, there to chat and have a coffee, before heading off to Levin for lunch. I didn't go on the lunch run, but got to know some members and look at the range of cars, from 1989 to 2020. I was impressed with the café and the view overlooking the lake and course, and think that it would be a great place for our club to meet or end up during one of our runs. Car parking is good and the café can cope with the numbers we get on a run.

OMG it is July already, the shortest day has come and gone. That means spring is coming, Christmas decorations will start to appear very soon.—You think I am joking? Well, the Greytown Festival of Christmas starts 1 July and runs till 31 July 2020.
After the long period of isolation, it was great to see so many at club night, and thank you Brian for arranging a guest speaker at such short notice. Our Rally committee are also working hard to get you out and about again with several new or altered activities, so check Neale’s column and the upcoming event section. Over the months of absence from the club rooms, our roof leaks also became a bit of a problem and some remedial temporary repairs had to be addressed. The one that we have been chasing for some time was finally located (I hope) and another one that was out of site, also became evident. As I write this (26 June) we haven’t had a leak in 2 weeks, but these are temporary repairs and a long-term solution needs to be planned. We also have an AGM coming up in August, so please fill in your nomination forms and forward them to the Secretary. All positions are up for grabs. This is your club and you decide who you want running it. Do you want the old norm or do you want a NEW NORM (the new catch phrase thanks to Covid 19) whatever you want, let’s take the opportunity and run with it. Bill 4

The Rally Committee is back in business again, although for the next couple of months there will be a few minor changes to the events we had planned. Just as well that we have all got used to making changes this year. Firstly, the existing calendar of events as previously printed here has been scrapped up until November. Secondly, the Challenge Trophy and Navigator of the year will not be run for the year 2019-2020. These two competitions will restart at our November Rally for the year 2020-2021. Colonial Cup Restoration judging and awards will not be run this year. If you had a vehicle ready, it can be included in next year’s competition. Owing to the postponement of the 2021 International Rally, the Monte Carlo Rally for January 2021 will revert back to Wellington Anniversary Weekend and take in the Whanganui Vintage Weekend as it did this year. The events planned until November will be largely of the social type which we are sure you will enjoy, and our first event is July 26th, starting at the Clubrooms at 1.30pm. Rooms open from mid-day so bring your lunch. As we didn't have a Ladies rally I'm sure some of the guys need some practice for next year so how about the men bring a plate of food they have made, for a shared afternoon tea. Don't worry, it won’t be "judged". As we all know the Daffodil rally for Cancer was also cancelled this year. There isn't really enough time to get the event we had hoped to run this year arranged, but we will still be going to Queen Elizabeth Park on August 23rd. We still have the Kotare room booked and our friends at the Tram Museum are keen to see us. We won't be having the public display as in previous years, to raise a few dollars for the Cancer society, but we will be holding an auction to raise some money for them instead. So your "entry fee" will be something to donate to the auction and then to bid on something too. The Tram museum staff have offered to take us on a tour of their facility, hopefully including the workshop and storage sheds. We aren’t actively publicising this to other clubs and car people, but if you know someone who would like to come along they are welcome to attend. This year’s event will begin at Staglands at 10.00 am (or earlier if you wish) and travel over to the Kapiti coast arriving there around mid-day. For those who wish, go straight to Queen Elizabeth Park. Staglands has a very good cafe and they too are looking forward to seeing us. September 20th we are going to run a night rally. October 25th is not completely finalised, so keep watching here for updates. November Rally will be held as normal on Saturday 7th, with the annual dinner that evening. While we won't be having a public display this year, there will be something happening on Sunday too. This year’s Annual dinner will also see the presentation of several 50 year awards. So there you have it, we have some things for you to do again, so get out and do them. Neale. 5
MOTORCYCLE REPORT 22 JUNE: Trevor Barnes First meeting since COVID-19 lockdown: 12 attendees. Hal O’Rorke sent his apologies. Past Events: Aaron’s South Island Tour 20-26th March 2020: The last event before lockdown was the South Island Tour, which had to be abandoned. After the Friday crossing to Blenheim we headed to Rangiora. Unfortunately, Dennis Palmer had an off from his CB750, so bike and rider were in the van from there. At Rangiora the decision was made to turn back, and the earliest return ferry was 7:30am Wednesday. Suitable ferry and accommodation changes were made so we spent two nights in Kaikoura, where we visited a collection of American cars of the 50’s and 60’s plus a tour of the area. Then back to Blenheim Top 10 for the Tuesday night and onto the 7:30am sailing. A bit of a scare for Ashley as the booking office had not changed his booking but he did get on the ferry. Adrian McNee had booked a Wednesday night ferry to get home earlier than the original plan and had to wait for that sailing. Aaron reported that John Foote and his wife, who we met at Waiau, were both injured and their Toyota Cressida written off when a car u-turned in front of them. They had just completed the VCC Club Captain’s Tour. Informal Ride 20th May: Peter Simpson sent a mail around for those who wished to meet at the Waiwhetu BP for a ride through Wainuiomata to the coast. Eight riders attended including Des Vinten. BSA Club/Classic Club Ride at level 2: Eighteen bikes turned out for a ride in the Wairarapa – Martinborough and Gladstone. As the group limit was 10 they “split” into groups of 8 and 10. James Chambers took his Henderson but unfortunately came to a halt in Martinborough with the magneto point’s spring breaking – an almost unheard of failure. Matchless-AJS Event in Takaka: Peter Simpson rode his modern to the premiere showing of a film of the recent International Matchless-AJS Rally. Peter has a copy of the film for us to view. Coming Events: Branch Events: Now we are in level 1 the club has opened the clubrooms and has scheduled some events. However, the pre-Covid schedule has been abandoned until the Annual Rally in November. Motorcyclists are always welcome on these events. Refer to your copy of Motoring Spirit. Rubber Duckie Rally 19th September: To be confirmed. Wellington Annual Rally 7th November: Planning is under way for this. If you are not taking a car then take your bike (or marshal). Wairarapa Gold Medal Trial 21st November: To be confirmed. National Motorcycle Rally and tours, Wairarapa 12-18th March 2021: Tip Top North Island Tour 26th March – 4th April 2021: Aaron and Peter have commenced planning for this tour to Cape Reinga and need expressions of interest so that accommodation etc. can be sorted. HOW THE ARCHIVES WORK Part 2

Another section of the Accession policy includes “Posters” and over many years we have produced Easter, National and Branch Rallies and also all the International or Pan Pacific Rallies, and some historic motoring publicity, both car and motorcycle. Our Branch magazine started as a “Newsletter” printed on a “Gestetner duplicator” on newspaper that has a short life. These early editions - June 1958 to May 1973, have been photocopied and are in three bound volumes. We are missing a small number of copies but like “Motoring Spirit”, record Branch activities. The archive has the originals in safe keeping. We have copies of most of the branch produced membership lists. The Archive is an important part of the record keeping of our Branch activities and you can assist by making donations, most likely photographs of events. You are most welcome to view the archive holdings, on Club nights or Wednesday mornings. Recent donation: founder member Ivan Benge has kindly lent his photo album which has several photos from our inaugural rally in November 1958 and a later event circa 1959. These photos have been scanned and I hope to add them to the existing photo frames on the club room display. JUNE CLUB NIGHT Our first club night back after returning to level 1 following the Covid 19 outbreak. A smaller than usual number of members attended, probably around 50, which is understandable following such a dramatic 12 weeks. Our speaker for the night was the owner of the Total Body Shop, Kelvin Daly. Total body Shop is the sole importer of the product POR-15 and Kelvin spoke at length about this and its various uses. In speaking about the product, Kelvin explained how some panel beaters hate the product and others love it and then went on to explain the reasons he felt for those against it, being that they don't follow the instructions! He cited an example of the misuse of a two pot product that requires 30 mins of binding time before it is applied. A large truck and trailer unit was painted by three different painters, two who followed the rules, painting the chassis and cab and the other who painted the trailer. One side of the trailers paint peeled off because that side was painted first before the product had time to do its binding process, the rest of the trailer was ok! Our friend Phil gave him a hard time about POR-15, but was rewarded with a small can to try again!! As well as paint, they do a number of other products for the panel beating industry as well as running painting training courses. Thanks Kelvin for a great evening and the donation of two emergency car kits. These will be used as raffle prizes. I think I might need a pair of glasses.’ The optician fixed the snake up with a pair of glasses and told him to come back if he still couldn't see properly. Two weeks later, the snake was back at the optician’s. ‘I’m depressed.’ he complained.’ ‘Why, what’s the problem?’ asked the optician. ‘Haven’t the glasses helped?’ ‘The glasses are fine’ sighed the snake. ‘But I’ve realised that I’ve been living with a garden hose for the past five years!’

Phillip and Pat Pearce, who have transferred from Auckland and are now living in Paraparaumu. They have two model 96 SAABs, one a two stroke. Chris and Gillian Taylor, who have also transferred from Auckland, and who have a stable of seven vintage motorcycles.
