From the editors laptop Well, the month of July has just shot by like a Train a Grande Vitesse without brakes! This, of course means we are into the third quarter of the year. Shortest day has gone and at the moment of writing, it is 16 degrees, but don’t get excited just yet, as it’s been pretty cold just of late and some nasty floods in the North.
What hasn't come yet, but will do on the 18th of August, is the AGM. As mentioned in the last Newsletter, all positions on the Committee are up for grabs. This also means the Editor position; Yes, I am standing down after 2 and a bit years. The position of Editor, is one of immense power and if you would like to wield this power and rub shoulders with Presidents and Chairpersons, you should consider it. You may wish to ask past Editors about this greatness. However, they may just tap the sides of their noses knowingly and say that all will be revealed upon entering their Coven. ‘The pen is mightier than the sword’

August already, the weather will soon be warming up again, and the various VCC outings and runs will be back to normal or is this the new normal. Club night’s speaker provided a subject that I think most are pretty unprepared for and raised a few interesting points, I didn’t know that the Civil defence centres had gone to rack and ruin and been replaced by Wellington Region Emergency Management Offices that are run in a different way.
The sirens that we knew of are now used for flood warnings. And in an Earthquake we are to fend for ourselves for a while (I expected that anyway) but how many of us are prepared? Do you have an emergency plan, a grab bag/ what is in it? How long can you survive with it? Where is it? Do you have more than one? Do you have one in the car/each car? I for one am sceptical of the reliability of the Cellular system for messaging after an earthquake as the cell towers are as venerable as any other structure, so make sure you know the people around where you live and work, you may need them or they may need you in a disaster. Check out the web site https://wremo.nz/ Now I am off to see what supplies I need to put under my desk and in my car as I may be stuck in Wellington in the next earthquake and my supplies are in Petone, They won’t be much use to me there, when there won’t be roads between Wellington and anywhere else for 8 days.

FROM THE CAPTAIN’S TABLE

Cancer, it affects us all, some directly, some indirectly. This year due do circumstances beyond anyone’s control, our "Daffodil Rally" will be a slightly lower key event than we had originally envisioned. However we are still having an event at Queen Elizabeth Park, McKay’s Crossing and we will still be raising funds for the Cancer Society. You have a choice this year of starting at Staglands, Akatarawa Road, or going directly to Q E II Park. Staglands will have their cafe open so you can have a snack before leaving there around 11.00am. Alternatively, if you want to go directly to the park we will have people on hand from around 11.30am. The tram museum will be showing us their latest tram restoration; this has been a truly huge project and will be worth seeing. We will have a couple of other fundraising efforts going as well, so bring along some cash!! Other car clubs have been invited along too, but it has not been advertised to the public. So, as we have no idea of numbers attending, if you are asked to give a bit of a hand with marshalling cars on the day or something else, it would be appreciated if you could assist. Above all come along, bring your family and friends and your old car, bike or whatever and have a good day out, we all deserve that. Neale.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT 20 JULY: Trevor Barnes 10 people attended the meeting. Past Events: None Coming Events: Branch Events: Now we are in level 1 the club has opened the clubrooms and has scheduled some events. However, the pre-Covid schedule has been abandoned until the Annual Rally in November. Motorcyclists are always welcome on these events. Refer to your copy of Motoring Spirit. Rubber Duckie Rally 19th September and tour 20th: Entry forms have been received and circulated to those on our email list. The rally will go to Whangamomona for lunch, so bring your passport and T shirt if you have them. Those who have said they intend to go are Warrick Laing, Paul Switzer, Adrian Macnee, Peter Simpson, Hal O’Rorke and Trevor Barnes. Ashley Blair is a probable at this stage. All except Warrick will do the three-day post-rally tour. Peter will provide the backup vehicle. The Top 10 accommodation will be booked by Trevor and Trevor will chart a route and book tour accommodation with some help from Peter. Wellington Annual Rally 7th November: Planning is under way for this. If you are not taking a car then take your bike (or marshal). Wairarapa Gold Medal Trial 21st November: To be confirmed. This is listed in the July edition of their newsletter “Zenith”. An email has been sent to the Wairarapa secretary. National Motorcycle Rally and tours, Wairarapa 12th -18th March 2021: Entry forms have been received and circulated to those on our email list. Those intending to go are urged to book accommodation very soon as it will be hard to find due to the number of other events on at the same time. Tip Top North Island Tour 26th March – 4th April 2021: Aaron and Peter have commenced planning for this 10 day tour to Cape Reinga and need expressions of interest so that accommodation etc. can be sorted. Contact Aaron as soon as possible. Aaron discussed the planning so far. Because of the total distance there will be some higher mileage days required and the plan is to alternate long and short days. There will probably be a lay day in Paihia, to allow some sightseeing etc. Other Business: The October club night will be the “Motorcycle night” at the clubrooms. There are two lots of movies to be shown and it is proposed to show them on Friday nights at the clubrooms. Aaron will arrange these. Next Meeting: At the Butcher and Brewer, 7:30pm. JULY CLUB NIGHT Our guest speaker this month was Nickola Loodin from the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office. The Acronym WREMO is probably easier to remember!. This department was formed after the Christchurch earthquakes, and was set up to help co -ordinate emergency management. It has a staff of 190. The old Civil Defence Organisation as it was, was disbanded in the sense that separate buildings were thought not to be ideal in todays disaster management. Todays co-ordinators work less structured and have the capabilities to set off alarms/send warning texts, from home. We were asked to identify Wellingtons hazards which, of course, are many. The major one being a large earthquake which has the capacity to cut off Wellington from the rest of the country from days, to months. Wellington has four fault lines, all running up the Island in virtually straight lines. North and South. One on the West side runs up SH 1, taking in the Kapiti Coast. Two run up the Hutt Valley and the most dangerous one is off the Wairarapa Coast and is called the Hikurangi Subduction. As it is in the Ocean, it has the capacity to cause a Tsunami which, because of its close proximity to land, will give no warning! Tsunami travel at 800 kph!! The things we have to remember are that there will probably be no running water, gas, or electricity. There will probably be no sewerage either. Major highways will be cut and the damage to SH1 from Picton to Kaikoura was used as an example of what the road from Wellington to the Kapiti Coast would be like. The Kaikoura road took 396 days to repair. Apparently the average usage of water is 220 litres per person, per day, so we would have to drastically cut that. As we have been told, the correct procedure is to remember to drop, cover and hold. However, the correct procedure if the quake occurs at night, is to stay in bed and pull the covers over you. There is a danger that getting out of bed could injure you more, by being thrown around or tripping on already fallen items or being cut by broken glass or mirrors. Standing in doorways is no longer considered a safe place because todays modern houses don’t have the strength that older buildings had in those areas. All in all, sobering thoughts and a good time to stock up on non-perishable items and water, but don’t store them all in the one place—that place may just be the one place you cant reach in an emergency. Targa 2020 VCC Time Trial – Breaking News The Targa 2020 VCC Time Trial is now being run as two conjunctive events-: 1. The 4 day time trial will start from Albany in Auckland, Thursday 15 th October 2020, and travel over closed tarmac road stages to overnight in Whangarei, before returning via closed road stages to overnight in Ellerslie Friday 16th October. 2. A 2 day time trial will start from Ellerslie, Auckland Saturday 17 th October 2020. This is a totally new event with a significantly reduced entry fee aimed at VCC members who wish to enjoy an outstanding Targa VCC event over a weekend. On Saturday 17th October, both 2 and 4 day entrants travel over closed tarmac roads on the Coromandel to overnight in Whitianga, where all VCC entrants, friends and family are invited to join for a meal together at the Mercury Bay Club, and where we will also be presenting some fun participation awards. Sunday 18th October will see all of us returning over closed tarmac roads on the Coromandel to the event finish and prize giving dinner in Pukekohe.The Targa VCC Time Trial 4 day and the all new 2 day event gives VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible cars an outstanding opportunity to test their driving and time-keeping skills over closed tarmac stages, safe in the knowledge that they’re all driving in the same direction from start intervals, with nothing coming towards them. It’s not a race, and no special car modifications (roll cage etc.), are required. This will be an Artificial Flower (Daffodil) run and will involve collecting some money for the Cancer Society, and will take the form of a lucky dip, so bring along a wrapped present for auctioning. You may wish to go straight to Q.E 2 park, if you live over that side, but please let Neale know if you intend going to Staglands so he can advise the cafĂŠ of numbers
