CHAIRMAN’S RAMBLINGS

Well, our elusive Chairman seems to be playing at being the Scarlet Pimpernel this month, as I have had no ramblings from him, just prior to sending this off to the printers. More like a Shrinking Violet methinks. Anyway, I have to fill the space, so I have included a few more photos from past events. Ed. These two from the Colonial Cup Rally, courtesy of Angelica Edgley.

Our recent Remembrance run was a fairly leisurely one to Lake Ferry. It started with breakfast or a snack at Kaitoke Gardens; Aston Norwood Café and Function Centre (I'm led to believe the date scones are very good there) then the group met up with me at Featherston Cemetery. I realise this might not have been to everyone’s taste, but it did allow an opportunity for a bit of quiet reflection which really is what this run is all about. Further down Western Lake Road a stop was made by those who chose to, at Wairongomai Church, a great example of a country Church which once inside, reveals the impressive stained glass windows that are not apparent from the outside. It’s a really nice, peaceful place to visit and look out over the lake. Our final stop for the day was at the Lake Ferry Hotel for lunch, with around 30 of us enjoying good company, good food and a warm fire. August 25th should by now be circled on your calendars as the "must attend" event for our club. The Daffodil Rally for Cancer is important for several reasons; we want to raise a good sum of money for the Cancer Society to enable them to further their goals of fighting cancer and of supporting those who are unfortunate to suffer from it. Face it, which among us hasn't been affected by cancer either directly or indirectly and wanted it gone. Also it is a really good way to showcase our Vintage Car Club to both the public and to other likeminded "car guys and girls". So we need you to turn up, preferably in your club car, bike, truck, tractor, tank or whatever (that means your daily driver if all else fails) on the day and do whatever you can on the day to make it a success. Tell your friends to come too, other car clubs are of course welcome as well. Our Feature marque this year is Citroen as it is their centennial, so we expect an interesting turnout of cars from a company who was never afraid of trying some really different engineering and making it work. Southwards Museum are bringing a Mclaren along for us to see Kapiti Brass Band will be performing during the day, Ray is arranging Vintage Car rides, the trams will be running and the pony and horse rides will be on as well. It will be a good day out, so make us all proud and be there. Neale Aston Norwood Gardens Facebook page featured photographs of some of the cars parked in their carpark, as well as some of you having coffee etc. They were really pleased to see you there on the day. Hello and welcome to another edition of your Motoring Spirit; let’s hope you all get it this month, without the hassle that xtra customers had last month. Just a jolt in the behind for any Wellington branch members (and anyone else reading this) who are thinking of going to the VERO 2021 and want accommodation; you’d better hurry. I booked mine two weeks ago, near Pukekura Park and the racecourse. They have 16 units and after my booking, they only had one left. I would assume that unit has now gone too. This would appear to be the same for all New Plymouth, so you had better get on to it, tout de suite. Well, we have managed to get 2/3 of the way through winter, without too much bother, a little rain, but temperatures have really been quite mild, so the various runs and rallies have been enjoyable. The latest one, the Remembrance Run, appeared to be a success. I didn’t go on it, but judging by the photos, it seemed that the rain held off. I’m looking forward to and curious about, the next club night presentation on 3D printing. I have seen them in Warehouse Stationery, at reasonable prices, so it would seem that they are now within reach of the average person and will probably come down more, as time goes by. Ed.

MOTORCYCLE REPORT 22ND JULY: Trevor Barnes Past Events: On 30th June some members attended a Classic Club run to a military museum in Raumati. Coming Events: Daffodil Day, 25th August: To be held at McKays Crossing, Kapiti. This fundraiser for the Cancer Society, raised over $5000 last year; we aim to better that sum this time. Bring your bike or interesting car for display, and volunteer to assist. See your Motoring Spirit. Also promote it amongst your friends and clubs. Peter Simpson took the names of volunteers and urged members to bring a bike. James Chambers is to investigate having the Classic Club August ride attend Daffodil Day. Taranaki Rubber Duckie, Saturday 21st September: Hal O’Rorke, Ashley Blair, Warrick Laing, John Viner, Paul Switzer and Trevor Barnes are attending. Trevor will arrange accommodation and has planned a route for the tour. Hutt riders to meet at Haywards, at 8 am and Waikanae by 9 am. Warrick and John will only do the first tour day. October-November: Spontaneous rides. Peter Simpson will email for each ride. Wairarapa Gold Medal Trial, Nov. 23rd: Note: Auckland M/C Rally date clashes with this. Xmas Ride Friday December 20th: Aaron will organise this. 10 am at Brown Owl. The 2020 Biennial Rally 25-26 January 2020: Admin: Peter Simpson; In hand. Prizes & trophies: Warrick Laing and John Neill; In hand. Castrol has been secured. Advertising: Ashley Blair; A poster has been prepared, and a few modifications were suggested. Catering: Peter has confirmed Valley Caterers. Dinner is $29 and Sunday BBQ, $15. Paper bag lunches are still to be arranged. Pub Charity: Hal O’Rorke: The application to Pub Charity is in progress. Route Organiser, including Marshalls, route notes, Sunday ride: The Wainuioru route will proceed as the use of the Wainuioru Hall has been confirmed. Trevor Barnes will also book the Anzac Hall in Featherston. Sunday run suggestions were Whitemans Valley Film Set (does it still exist?), Titahi Bay to Ohariu (probably not suitable) and use the 2019 Colonial Cup run to Titahi Bay. Other suggestions are welcome. Aaron’s South Island Tour 20-26th March 2020: Friday 20th: 5pm sailing to Blenheim. 21st: To Rangiora. 22nd-24th: Akaroa. 25th: Kaikoura via inland route. The tour deposit of $200 is to be paid by November, with the balance of the $343 tour charge by January. Aaron noted that our mascot DOD is currently touring America, hosted by Dave O’Leary et al. Mr D of the Day is indeed well travelled. National Motorcycle Rally 2021: Messrs Simpson and Barnes are still to meet with the committee for the Wairarapa 2021 Nat. M/C Rally, to provide support for organising it. Other Business: The Motorcycle Night at the VCC clubrooms is on Tuesday October 15th. Next Meeting: At ‘The Butcher and Brewer’, 7:30pm. July Kapiti Mid Week Run

27 Members gathered at the North End independent microbrewery adjacent to the Salt and Wood collective American BBQ style restaurant in Waikanae. The brewery was established in 2013 by 3 Kiwis passionate about beers. Hops required for the brewing process are sourced from NZ, US and Germany. A 2500 litre batch of quality beer is brewed over 3 weeks. After bottling, the beer is sold to North and South Island restaurants and also overseas. The spent grain goes to a local deer farm, the deer appear quite fond of this supplement, I wonder why! Fortunately the resident pooch, Rudi, doesn’t like beer. Many members enjoyed the tour and the following beer tasting session. The lunch orders were taken, and a number of ladies present settled on white wine to accompany their meal. As is typical with pub meals, they were very ample in size, extremely tasty, and really enjoyed on a cold wet windy winter’s day. With thanks again to the organising team Trevor, Roderick, Ann and Hal for getting us out there for another good educational and social day out.

JULY CLUB NIGHT At this months club night, we were entertained by Claude Poulsen and a team from the Miniature Railway Society. They operate the miniature railway down on the Esplanade at Petone foreshore. I have never ever stopped there to have a look, despite having driven past it hundreds of times, so didn’t know what to expect this evening. Claude explained that although they are called the Miniature Railway Society, the members also make operating, stationary engines and all sorts of models with moving parts, driven by various methods, such as hot air, electricity and combustible fuels. The workmanship is very impressive indeed, with many hours going into the making. The members that came tonight, had brought with them, various models in stages of completion, along with some completed ones, which they demonstrated. Claude's talk and slide show was centred around the formation of the club back in the late 1950’s, with details of the formation of tracks to run various gauge locomotives on; the expansion of the track length itself, and details of how boilers for the engines were made and the tests needed to ensure they are safe, before getting a boiler certificate, which is required to be renewed every 2 years. Thank you Claude and the other members, for an interesting and informative evening. I’m sure the working models entertained everybody and the craftsmanship was truly appreciated. Ed.

July Sunday Run: Richard Davies SUNDAY JULY 7th Wow, what a great turnout, the best ever! Although it is a long list of members, I feel it should be included, so that others who don’t go, or haven't been for awhile, can see who is attending and want to come along to future runs. Most of us met up at the Janus Bakery, which ended up being a bit crowded, but after morning coffee, we went on to Greg Haynes place in Nae Nae, where we saw an interesting collection of about 6 vehicles, mainly Fords, then off we went to Days Bay, where more vehicles were stored. These were a Ford truck, a Ford ‘A’ car and a Chevrolet Corvette. After that, the group split up, with some going to Williams Park for lunch and the others off to do their own thing. Help Wanted We have a 12 yr. old son who loves cars and we’re wondering if there is anyone willing to take him under their wing (maybe restoration of a car/ mechanical skills) he is homeschooled so available during week or weekends, whatever suits. Looking for around 2 hours a week if possible; he is very polite, quiet and kind and unfortunately none of us in the family have the skills or money to support him in his passion. If you can’t help, do you know of anyone who may be good for us to make contact with? It’s basically hands on experience we are looking for, like a grandfather role, I’m sure a lot of your members grew up with someone in their family, sharing their passion, so hopefully someone would like to pass knowledge on to next generations. Targa 2019 Time Trial When: Monday 28th October to Saturday 2nd Nov 2019. Where: Central and Lower/Mid North Island – Refer Draft Event Programme. What and Why: Outstanding opportunity for VCC members to drive iconic North Island roads as a time trial. This is not a race, but rather an exercise in safe, precise driving to maintain a set average speed over closed tarmac stages (Similar to a regularity trial). It’s also a great opportunity for VCC branches to raise public awareness of the VCC and hopefully attract some new and younger members. Cost: Substantial 30% discount off standard entry fee for VCC members with VCC/VIC eligible cars = $4,790 reduced to $3,353 + Medical Levy and RallySafe. (All entry fees are + GST). Following on from our successful display last Year at QE2 Park, we have again booked the same venue. The Tramways Museum and Kapiti Stables will also participate. WE NEED EVERYONE TO PARTICIPATE! (All cars are eligible irrespective of age or club affiliation.) Last year we had over 150 vehicles and raised over $4000.00!!! We can do better, how about 200 cars and over $5000.00 raised! Annual Lake Ferry Excursion Dear Classic Car Club member/car enthusiast 2019 marks the 39th anniversary of the annual Lake Ferry Excursion, organised by the Sunbeam Car Club of NZ (Wellington). To make sure everyone has this date down early to save conflicts with other events, the Lake Ferry Excursion is always the 2nd Saturday in December. This year that makes it the 14th of December. As always, we meet at the Fell Museum at 11am for an 11.30 departure from Featherston to Lake Ferry, where we meet to talk over lunch – or wander across to the Lake Ferry Hotel for a pub meal. Please note that we meet at the big oak tree outside the Fell Museum at 11.20, for a driver’s briefing. Please feel free to send this on to anyone in other car clubs you think might be interested. We welcome all car club along on the day. We also welcome people who don’t belong to a car club. The day is about driving classic cars and meeting and talking to other enthusiasts; it isn’t about belonging to a car club. The hotel at Lake Ferry has confirmed they will be open and will have food available, or you can bring your own picnic lunch. In the past, we have had English, American, Italian and French cars along. We have had the Constructors Car Club, Corvette Club, Capri Club, Mustang Club and Early American Clubs, as well as other smaller clubs attend. We also invite and welcome all car clubs from the Manawatu and Wairarapa. We sent an earlier email, this is just a follow up to remind you of the date. 28th August 2019 Visit to the Time Cinema, Lyall Bay, Wellington The Film is “The Gumball Rally”, a 1976 American comedy, directed and co-written by Charles Bail, also known as Chuck Bail, and is about an illicit coast-to-coast road race, inspired by the Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, run by Brock Yates, which inspired several other films, including Cannonball (1976), Cannonball Run (1981),Speed Zone (1989), as well as an actual event, the American Gumball Rally and Gumball 3000 International road race. 11.30 - 11.45am: Meet at the Chocolate Fish Café, Shelly Bay, Wellington, for lunch: View the menu on www.chocolatefishcafe.co.nz 1.00pm: Leave for the Time Cinema,191 Sutherland Road, Lyall Bay. I’ve had these stored away for a while and thought it was about time I used them. Both are from John Stokes. Ed. I urgently needed a few days off work, but we were so busy that I knew the boss would not allow me to take leave. I thought that, maybe if I acted "crazy" then he would tell me to take a few days off. So, I hung upside-down on the ceiling and made funny noises. My co-worker asked me what I was doing. I told her that I was pretending to be a light bulb, so that the boss might think I was crazy and give me a few days off. A few minutes later the boss came into the office. "What in the name of heaven are you doing?" I told him I was a light bulb. He said, "You are clearly stressed out. Go home and recuperate for a couple of days." I jumped down and walked out of the office. When my co-worker followed me, the boss stopped her. "And where do you think you're going?!" She said, "I'm going home, too. I can't work in the dark.” ———————————————————— An old man, a boy and a donkey were going to town. The boy rode on the donkey and the old man walked. As they went along they passed some people who remarked it was a shame the old man was walking and the boy was riding. The man and boy thought maybe the critics were right, so they changed positions. Later, they passed some people who remarked, "What a shame he makes that little boy walk." So then they decided they both would walk. Soon they passed some more people who thought they were stupid to walk when they had a decent donkey to ride, so, they both rode the donkey. Now they passed some people that shamed them by saying how awful to put such a load on a poor donkey. The boy and man said they were probably right, so they decided to carry the donkey. As they crossed the bridge, they lost their grip on the animal and he fell into the river and drowned. The moral of the story: If you try to please everyone, you might as well kiss your ass goodbye!

The Clubrooms are also open Wednesdays from 9:30 to 12:00, and for Noggin & Natter Fridays from 7:00pm ($1 for biscuits, tea and coffee free) Motorcycle Meetings are usually held on the 4th Monday of the month in the Butcher & Brewer, 175 Jackson Street, Petone, at 7:30pm.
