CHAIRMAN’S RAMBLINGS

I feel the months are getting shorter, I am finding less time available to get thing done, or is it that I am taking longer to get things done. February is over, a short month so a short column. For me the highlight was Art Deco weekend, our 19th one. This one had a lot of younger people in attendance, and appears a few arrests on Saturday night. The Cars were all there again with the addition of a few not seen before, the most memorable this time was a mauve Cord, beautiful car, not sure about the colour choice though. The parade also included a mobile Spirit of Napier statue in the form of Cherry Boomb, a burlesque dancer wearing nothing but some silicone patches and a coat of bronze paint. Then the finishing touch to the weekend festivities was the biplane that landed, then was hit with a gust of wind and left parked upside down. Now home and back to work and trying to recover from a spider bite, it appears that there are an awful lot of White Tail spiders up there. By the look of the 2 puncture marks on my hand (2mm apart) I was bitten twice or once by a bloody big spider. As for the VCC, March sees the next National Executive meeting being held in Wellington. From the editors laptop So, It’s Newsletter time again. A short month too; just as well every month doesn't have 28 days—well, 29 this time, as its leap year. I'm getting old enough, fast enough, as it is. Just as well it only comes round every 4 years, as I'm also getting too old for all this leaping! Just as well the Olympics is only every 4 years and occurs on the same year as the leap thingy as it means I can combine my leaps with a chance to win a medal! They (the Olympics that is) might be off this year, due to Covid-19, as are potentially, a lot of other events. I am looking forward to the start of the Formula 1 season, but there could be complications there too. The Chinese GP has already suffered. The new race on this years calendar, the Vietnamese GP, scheduled for 5 April, may be up for scrutiny too. Back home and coming up are the Rex Porter, rally, the Wellington Gymkhana and the Maunga Moana rally. Will we need to dress up in those paper suits and wear masks, do you think? Doesn’t bear thinking about, we don’t want all Vintage car drivers and passengers looking the same. How will we recognise each other at the dinners—funny hand shakes—leave that to the Masons!! Our Prime Minister is spending so much time overseas, I hope she doesn't bring it back!! Until next month, Motopaiko Haumaru.

February is always a bit busy in the world of old cars isn't it, unfortunately it caught up with me which meant I was unable to attend the twilight run. After spending the afternoon extracting the rear axle and transmission of a Buick, I wasn't in a fit state to go out due to the amount of filth that had found its way from the car on to me. I'm sure everyone had a great time at John’s workshop. March has a few things going on too. Our gymkhana is on again at Kamahi Park in Stokes Valley on Sunday 22nd at 10.00am. We will be having around six "tests" which will be suitable for any club eligible vehicle, from a sports car to a limousine, or a truck. Bring along your family and friends and let them have a go in your car if you want. The go kart will be available for kids to have a go on too. On the weekend before this, 14th March, the Wairarapa branch is holding their "Rex Porter Rally". This is their big rally for the year, remembering a man who was one of Wellingtons Founder members as well as their own. Entry forms are available on line via the VCC website or you could call Kevin Ball 06 377 1236. Have you entered this year’s Easter Rally? It’s in Levin so at least it’s not far to go. From time to time I've suggested that we should let someone else drive our cars to hopefully get them interested in our wonderful addiction. Well I put the idea to the test recently and asked Shaun, our eldest boy if he might like to take a car to British Car Day, he took up the offer and took along the Velox Caleche. He had never driven it before but had no problems at all and he seemed to enjoy himself. So much so that later in the month he took it along to the VCC display at the Masterton A & P show, he even convinced his girlfriend to travel with him despite her being a bit concerned about the lack of seatbelts and airbags!! Try it, you might be surprised at the result, I was. Neale

HOW THE ARCHIVES WORK

WHAT IS AN ARCHIVE Archives hold the records of government; in our VCC branch it is our records of Committee meetings as compiled by the secretary, treasurer, club captain and the rally committee. Added to this are the Motoring Spirit Magazine, donations from branch members; typical examples being photos of branch events. We have an accession policy that includes all the above plus National and International events where our members receive awards also local events that the branch takes an active part in and Christmas parades as an example. How does the archive look after your donation? Each donation is recorded and is kept as a stand-alone file. If you make several donations they are kept together as donation A, B,C, D etc. Libraries have a catalogue, archives have a finding list. The archivist makes a detailed list of your donation so we can find each event that is within your set of records, i.e. each rally, social event etc. The archive does not let any of its records leave the archive room. They are the only copy and are treasures that cannot be replaced. Copies are restricted to branch use, but if they are to be used outside of the branch, permission from the donor will be obtained first. The archive environment very closely follows the National Archive standard for Community Archives. We have a dehumidifier and a fan heater whose readings I monitor most weeks. One of the ongoing works is to copy film and photos to digital records. This is also being backed up on our two branch Laptop computers and two portable hard drives that are kept off site. Newspapers are of very poor quality so articles are photocopied. Photo copy paper is so close to archive quality that its life is measured in many decades. For many years it has been practice to laminate original documents. This is a death sentence for any document. The archive has such a document which is showing signs of discolouring, white going brown. If you want to laminate a photo or document please take a copy and laminate the copy, archive the original in an archive pocket, the archivist is willing to give you options how to do this. The archive is very short of photographs, prints or digital format; we can scan photos and return your originals. 35mm slides, 127 and 120 negatives can also be scanned. MOTORCYCLE REPORT 24TH FEBRUARY: Trevor Barnes 17 people attended. Past Events: British and European Car Day 9 February: Velocette Owners Club National 7-10 February: New Plymouth Top 10. There were 52 entries including 11 Australians on borrowed bikes. Jampot International Rally 15-16 January: Dennis Palmer and Peter Simpson attended the rally in Nelson, with Peter also attending the pre-rally tour to Invercargill via the West Coast, taking in the Burt Munro and returning to Nelson via Dansey’s Pass and the East Coast. There were 17 English and 9 Australian attendees, riding borrowed bikes including one of Peter’s. A total of 84 riders, with 50 on the tour, is quite impressive. The AGM Dinner speaker was Paul Sangster, historian and poet (among other things) whose poetry is absolutely hilarious. The top prize went to a 1929 R2 AJS. Other Business: We acknowledged the passing of Tony Bernstein with a minutes silence. Peter Wright, Mel Walker and Dennis Palmer attended his funeral. February Kapiti Mid Week Run

For those of us who had not explored Foxton before, the Te Awahou Nieuwe Stroom museum, library, cafe and windmill complex on Main Street was a delightful surprise. 25 of us had arrived on a hot, sunny day to find that staff had arranged, not only for us to be guided around the Anne Frank exhibition, but also, to the rest of the museum as well. The whole complex was buzzing with activity: a community volunteer event and a school visit to the exhibition in the amazing building. What I personally found most fascinating about the Anne Frank 'Let me be myself' display was the detailed depiction of the Frank premises and how the secret hiding place was created. It was bigger than I’d imagined but, on the other hand, it did have to accommodate eight people. An important part of the exhibition was the story of six of today's young people and their experience of identity, prejudice and discrimination. Anne died in Bergen-Belsen in 1945, probably of typhus. A copy of her diary is on display. This exhibition, brought here by the Holocaust Centre of New Zealand, provokes some deep thoughts and sadness about Anne's life and similar problems in today's world. Afterwards, members dispersed to the cafes on site. Hal and I also visited the windmill where goods were being winched up through a hatch in the ceiling. The ground level shop has all sorts of Dutch delights, liquorice, biscuits, cheeses, as well as the stoneground flour, ground at the mill (which I just had to buy for my homemade bread). A fabulous day out!

I saw this exhibition at Peter Jacksons Great War Exhibition in 2018 and found it very moving, even after knowing the story historically. It’s a must-see. Ed.

FEBUARY CLUB NIGHT The Ford Motor Plant, Seaview Wellington This month, our guest was Alf King who joined Ford Motors in 1946 and remained there until 1985, rising through the ranks to become Factory Manager until he retired. Alf gave us a very interesting history of the plant from its inception to its closure in 1988.
Up until 1936, all Ford product was handled by the Colonial Motor Company but in 1935, a visit was made by Directors of Ford USA and Canada, with the objective of establishing an assembly plant in Wellington. October 1935 saw Ford deposit ÂŁ600,000 in a bank account with the Commercial Bank of Australia. Building started in early 1936 and with the construction still continuing, the first production run began at the end of that year, with the production of the Model 68 V8. In 1937, the plant was extended and production continued with the model 78 V8. Further plant extensions were made up until 1939. Limited car production continued from 1939 until 1942 but this production was mainly cars for the Army. From 1942, full Military production commenced. During that time, a lot of vehicles like Jeeps and V8s were reconditioned. During WW 2, the plant also made munitions and approximately 700,000 hand grenades and bombs were produced. 1946 saw the plant start back up with motor vehicle production and on the 16th of May, the first Prefect rolled off the line. In 1954, the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited the Ford Plant and a special dais was built so that the staff and their families were able to see the Royal Cavalcade. From 1965, production slowly moved to Wiri in Auckland and production ended in 1983. Thank you Alf, for this potted history of the Ford Motor Company.

Obituaries Motoring Spirit acknowledges the passing of long time Wellington Branch member, Stan Bellamore, on January 18, 2020, at the age of 90. Stan was the long time manager of the Southward Museum and only retired recently. Stan’s Daughter, Sue, also passed away recently, before Stan and the branch extends it’s condolences to the family.

Taking someone under your wing. You will recall in the June Motoring Spirit, a plea from the Cook family from Wainui, for someone to mentor their 12 year old son who has a love of cars. Paul Switzer took on the task, so I contacted Paul and here’s what happened. Justin Cook has been visiting me every Monday afternoon from July, through to the end of term in December, although we did miss the odd day for illness etc. In his time visiting me, we covered off a lot of vehicle related study and experience, which included some car stuff, and also motorcycle stuff, because the principals are the same, just the packaging can be a little different. I found that it challenged me a little, as you can’t explain how a magneto works unless they understand about magnetism and electricity. Also using terminology that will be understood by a 12 year old meant you often had to keep things simple and explain things at a level he could understand. In all it was a good learning experience for both of us, he learnt a lot about old vehicles, and I learnt a bit about Nissan Skylines!! I then contacted the Cooks for their comments and this is their story.
Justin has said this is broadly what they covered. Car and motorcycle gearboxes, clutches, magnetos, distributors, coil ignition, carburettors, under bonnet inspections on Toyota Camry and Ford 107E Prefect, trailer wheel replacement and re-torqueing wheel nuts, Honda 750 ignition advance mechanism and starter motor drive gears, rear brakes, use of vacuum test gauges, oil warning switch wiring, fitting new handlebars, replacing rear shock-spring units, tyre changing, fitting of front wheel and bleeding of front disk brake. In Justin’s own words: “Paul was really cool, he knew a lot about cars and I really enjoyed being able to see and sometimes assist, with working on his cars with him, he was really good at explaining things and also answered my questions in a kind way, I liked his cars because they were rare and it made it more interesting. This from Justin's Mother, Clare. “Paul was so lovely and it was every Monday for a couple of hours a week.” So there you are, a success story all round, so if you know of any young person who could benefit from your knowledge, reach out to them: maybe a neighbour or a young relation, it could be a learning opportunity for you both, and a possible outcome could be that this young person could become a future club member. COMING EVENTS GYMKHANA AND FAMILY PICNIC DAY SUNDAY 22nd MARCH. The annual Gymkhana and picnic will be held at Kamahi Park Stokes Valley at 10.00am. Follow the main Road until you come to the Fire Station. Take the road on the right hand side and follow down towards the Tennis Club. This is where you will find us. Gymkhana Tests will be taking place for those who want to take part and those who don’t, come along to watch and enjoy the day. Bring your lunch, something to sit on and perhaps a sunhat and sun tan lotion. We had a great day last year and hope that you will join us this year. Coffee and tea provided. Go Kart available for kids to have a go on. There is a $5 donation from each car towards the tennis club, for the use of their facilities.

ROGERS RUAPEHU RAMBLE: The ramble will take in Horopito, for those who want to and drive onto the Chateau for lunch or go to the top of the Bruce to have lunch at the café, then a ride on the chairlift to have a look at the beautiful scenery. Then back down to continue on to the Raurimu Spiral and Piriaka Lookout, finishing in Taumarunui for the night. SUNDAY 17th JANUARY: TARANAKI TUNNEL TREAT: Starting from Taumarunui, then on to Ohura, Kotare and the Ski Road Tunnels to New Plymouth in time to check in for the Vero International Festival Of Historic Motoring. (Once again, coincidental) “You’ll have an accident.” “Don’t worry,” said Bill. “My brother does it all the time.” At the next intersection, Bill drove straight through another red light. “Are you crazy?!” yelled Brian. “You’ll get us both killed!” “It’s okay” said Bill calmly. “ My brother does it all the time.” The next lights were green but this time Bill slammed on the brakes. “What have you stopped for?” asked Brian. Bill said: “My brother might be coming the other way.” 13

The race season is well underway and we are looking towards a summer of excitement. Following the article in Beaded Wheels (Written by Phil Pearce not me) we have had several enquiries from people wanting to come and join us. As a reminder, all Pre December 1960 cars are eligible (with only period modifications allowed) or “continuation” models whereby the specification was not changed from December 1960 (eg 850cc minis are OK, 1275 Coopers are not !) The vehicles must have either a VCC VIC or an MSNZ COD for the correct year represented. We also accept both MSNZ and VCC Race licences. If you have any queries regarding the eligibility of your vehicle, please read the VCC Branch Manual Section 23 Appendix G, and if you are still confused, please contact me. At the end of the road, turn left into Rosetta Rd. Drive down Rosetta and when you pass the Rosetta cafe on your right look for Hydes Rd on your right opposite Tiromoana Rd). Parking: If you bring your club vehicle, please park on the driveway which leads into the garage. If you’re in your modern, there should be ample parking in front of the house but if this is not available (due to wet weather) there is plenty more parking in Hydes Road.
