FROM THE EDITORS DESK Greetings Members Welcome to the July edition of your RIVET. Interesting times ahead with a new look committee having the two Andrews at our helm. Andrew Dittmer as Chairman and Andrew Johnson Club Captain. Both of these gentlemen have served “apprenticeships” under Bruce and Frank so it will be a smooth transition. Thanks to John Jonese, speaker at our July Club night. Most interesting. He is a friend of Chairman Andrew so a report on John’s address is in the Chairman’s Report. I hope that you will all enjoy the article in this edition of the RIVET on Craig and Wendy Ryland’s passion for 39 Chevrolets. I enjoyed setting it up for you. Next month I am planning on placing our esteemed Treasurer, Neil, in the limelight with an article on his motoring passion with English vehicles. Looking forward to get my teeth into this. Which brings me on to a request to all members out there….In order to publish the historical motoring passions and restoration projects hiding behind your garage doors, please do bring these to my attention as I would love to include your exploits in future editions of the RIVET or even submit them to the Beaded Wheels for their consideration. How about “dobbing” in any members you know that you consider may have an interesting story to tell regarding their vehicles or any thing to do within our Branch or VCC in general. Keep it clean though as no R18 material will be published! I will willingly approach any members who I know have interesting stories and projects and who agree to have these go to print.
I enjoyed our last rally immensely. I occupied a prime position at the starting line taking photos of each car as it awaited being flagged away by Bruce, Jennifer and Christine. I was most impressed with the work undertaken by the whole team of members to enable the rally to proceed. Special thanks to Christine as this was her first as Rally Secretary. Great job! Seeing the array of vehicles leaving the Racecourse, just made me aware of the motoring history before my eyes-from a 1917 Buick to a 1990 Falcon. And what about all those Model A’s . Eight in total. Personally I like to see cars from more recent times in the mix as well. To this end I have decided to bring my old 1990 Holden V8 wagon back home. I have owned this from new. For the last few years it has been garaged up in Motuoapa ( Taupo ) and used sparingly up there. Prior to this my ex wife, my son and even an ex lady friend had the use of the old Holden after I had pensioned it off ( the car and not the former girl friend—long gone) Pleased that I retained ownership of the Holden though as it does have a lot of history behind it. It is in original condition although in need of a little TLC before I let it loose at Branch and VCC events. I love these old V8s and this was the first one I have owned. In this edition I have included more pics of the vehicles in our Annual Rally. I have now covered every entrant as I believe that not only the prize winners should grace these fine pages. It is all about joining in, driving our loved vehicles and participating in Branch events that make membership of our movement so enthralling. That’s all for now. Chairman's Report — July 2022 Greetings Members I, along with my wife Sue, have now been actively involved with 4 different Vintage Car Clubs in New Zealand over the last 25 years. We started in Marlborough (Blenheim) and then Waikato (Cambridge) until I retired. Next was Wairarapa (Carterton) and finally Wanganui. All of these Clubs are full of wonderful enthusiastic people who are passionate about their old vehicles. Wanganui Club stands tall as the one which is the greatest we have found in encouraging not only the restoration of old vehicles, but the care of those who do so. To this we owe a huge amount to Immediate Past Chairman Bruce Ardell and his ever gracious wife Jennifer. They along with the committee have done a fantastic job. Well done. I am pleased to announce that Bill James has accepted and been approved in the role of Vice Chairman. One thing that this Covid vulnerability has taught us that it is prudent to have people able to step into roles seamlessly at short notice. I was thrilled with the great insight John Jonesse gave us at our meeting on the issues with vehicles and their care, or lack of it, in Tonga, Samoa and Fiji. In Marton we see many vehicles owned by our Pacific neighbours and now we understand more of the background into why they behave the way they do. Sue and I are really looking forward to going on the next run with Keith Turner. We are always thrilled to see what amazing things there are to do and see here in the Wanganui District. The bonus is we get to do it in Sue’s wee Ute. Neil Farrer and I are to attend the VCC AGM in Auckland. Although we are keen to make the requirements of our membership known I personally do not like large cities. If you are praying please uphold us in this task. Club Captain’s report — July 2022 Greetings Members I am thrilled to be appointed Club Captain, that said it’s a little daunting, as Frank has done such a great job over the last 5 years. He has even made my start much easier organising the calendar for the next few months and a draft for the rest of the year. Thanks Frank it is really appreciated. Unfortunately I missed the AGM due to Covid. I was very lucky and only had a mild head cold for two days. I was required to isolate for 7 days so missed the Annual Rally as well. From what I hear both went well and I was thrilled to see Peter Hardy, assisted by Charlotte and Jess, scoop first place overall- well done and congratulations. A few weeks ago the Targa Rally passed through Wanganui with a great contingent of VCC cars in the VCC time trial section, including our President Diane Quarrie in the regional 2 day event. Congratulations to Wanganui Branch members Pat Dillon and Bruce Chisholm, competing in the main Targa 2 day event in Pat’s Ford Lotus Cortina, coming 2nd overall. A great result. Coming up on 17th of this month Keith Turner is putting on a special Sunday run. I am really looking forward to our next club night on 3rd August. Our guest speaker is Richard Coxon from PEC Marton. Being an electronics technician I have watched PEC from afar with interest. I am sure this will be a very interesting and informative evening. Later in August Peter Hardy has planned another Daffodil Rally to be run on 21 st. We are extremely lucky to have a group of members that do a fantastic job running our club. This is a great event to raise funds for the Cancer Society and raise the profile of our club. Please tell your friends and acquaintances and encourage them to attend. Our September Club night (7th) will be our Shiny parts auction, time for an early spring clean?? I am hopeless at remembering names but will be making an effort of puts names to all your faces. If I don’t know you personally please take the time to make yourself known. I will be doing my best to make contact with everyone. I am semi-retired normally working Tuesday to Friday. Monday is a great day to call if you would like to have a chat about VCC things. Other days may be fine but please don’t be offended if I offer to call you back. Our cars aren’t or shouldn’t be ornaments, so I encourage everyone to get them out and use them for club events. That said your attendance is also very important and I would rather you came in a modern car than not at all. Captain Andrew J

In case you didn't, the new dates are: Friday 14th, Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th October 2022. Apologies to those who've already entered, made travel & accommodation bookings, and/or arranged leave from work, but this latest change was beyond our control. I've contacted all 3 accommodation providers on the attached Itinerary/Accommodation sheet, and they've all kindly agreed to transfer their discount codes to the new dates. (For those travelling from afar, we recommend that you get to Nelson by Thursday evening, 13th October, to be ready bright and early for Scrutineering etc which starts Friday morning 14th October at 8.30am Thanks hugely to all our primary advertisers: NZ Classic Car, NZ Classic Driver, Petrolhead and VCC Beaded Wheels who've pulled out all stops to ensure that this latest date change was able to be included in all current and future advertising.

NATIONAL VETERAN RALLY Planning is now well under way for National Veteran Run based in Tuakau next February . We have found an excellent venue for rally headquarters at La Valla, an old Catholic school with great grounds on a no exit road just two miles out of Tuakau. There is a massive secure carpark where we can leave trailers and park mobile homes. Quite important these days for veteran owners. On the other side of the buildings are great gardens, big trees and lawns that go on for ever and they have told us we can park up to sixty veteran vehicles on the lawns amongst the trees for the three days. There is accommodation on site, communal kitchen, lounge, a function centre with bar and a picture theatre which we will have full use of during the rally. La Valla really hums as the day we called they were cooking two meals for forty schools in South Auckland and that happens five days a week. St Johns had two hundred people there for a conference and there were two schools using the gymnasiums. It is very popular venue in South Auckland for weddings. There is even an airport on site. The accommodation is excellent, and their web site does not do the site justice. We will start and finish the runs from there each day after a cup of tea. The vehicles will park on the grass adjacent the new accommodation block and drive out through an avenue of trees. The runs each day will finish there with afternoon tea. When we could not make anything else work in Tuakau, we went back there, and they agreed to host us and have been great to work with. The whole weekend will be based around the La Valla complex starting with breakfast on Friday morning and finishing on Sunday night with the final dinner at La Valla. We could have a barbeque there one night and make use of the picture theatre. We may have a guest speaker one night. On Saturday afternoon there will be a concours and a gymkhana in the grounds for veteran owners on the run. There will be the choice of short and long runs each day and on one day the runs will be competitive. There could be a period costume option. After I talked to someone in Hamilton, veteran car owners started booking accommodation in Tuakau and they were coming from Gore, Christchurch, Hawkes Bay, Palmerston North, and Hamilton. We had to get something out in writing very quickly and everybody here started to panic. The first thing we sent out in haste had a wrong date and that did not help. Within a few days all the accommodation had gone at La Valla, and we had bookings in Tuakau Hotel also. I just hope the interest continues and we book out the twenty-eight rooms in the hotel. I would love to see fifty vehicles on a veteran run in Auckland again and I believe it is possible.
National Veteran Rally In planning stages, we could see we had to avoid the Ellerslie Concours and Art Deco, but knew if we had the event a few days after the Art Deco we might get a few entrants from the South Island that were coming up to the Art Deco event. I am sure this is what is happening. Eight months out we have fourteen groups in accommodation at Tuakau and that is a great start. John Stokes is organising the three runs and when we made the trip to Port Waikato, I thought that this would be a great run in a very primitive veteran. With the Auckland clubrooms closed it has not helped us access material, like email addresses and phone numbers, but Christchurch have stepped up to help. We are hoping to have a public car display in Waiuku. I am also hoping that at La Valla on the Saturday afternoon, we can encourage those to come out with their veteran vehicles who might not be able to participate in the event, because the vehicles are not registered or do not have a VIC. There are a huge number of veterans in Auckland we never now see, and it would be great to see these come out one afternoon. A vehicle identity card is required to enter the runs. If you need a vehicle identity card in Auckland talk to John Stokes. It would be good to see a few motor bikes start and heavy commercial vehicles. The Ryland’s Passion Craig and Wendy are in love….not only with one another, but with 39 Chevs. They own a trio of these old classics– a sedan, coupe and a ute– all lovingly restored and a credit to them. Earlier this year they kindly hosted our Branch for the annual gymkhana at their Papaiti property. Craig has an extremely well endowed ( the shed- not him) “ man’s cave” alongside their lovely home nestled among the hills. Obviously he is a hunter as evidenced by the many deer antlers and skulls hanging from the rafters in his shed, along with many other “men’s things” as us car nutters are inclined to gather. They kindly cooked up venison sausages for us on the BBQ as well. Very much appreciated thank you. So, I saw an opportunity to run with a story about their Chevies and their membership of the VCC. Craig gives the appearance of a gruff hard man, but wife Wendy insists that underneath he is a big soft teddy bear! Indeed they are a lovely couple and we are fortunate to have them as members of our Branch. Without rattling on any more, here is their story ( well part of it anyway) relating to their passion for 39 Chevs. Editor Ian
Craig’s passion for cars began when his father ‘s friend, Alan Osman, owned a 1954 Chev Styleline. Alan was also a member of the VCC. Craig’s first car he ever owned, when he was 15, was a 1939 Chev Sedan. He paid $50 from Linwood Wilks, on the corner of Duncan and Moana Street, Wanganui East., His second car was also a 1939 Chev Sedan, which was purchased in Masterton. She was an immaculate vehicle, costing $100. Can you see a pattern here regarding Chevs? His father owned a few Chevs, but the last car he owned was a 1949 Bonus Built Ford, which his father had lovingly restored. Last thing he did before he died. Craigs love for Chevrolet’s never ceased. A 1939 Chev Coupe was rescued, from the road side in Turangi, in about the year 2000. It was saved from being chopped into a hot rod. Needless to say, it was fully restored in 2002, just before he got married to Wendy, the second love in his life. He then purchased a 1939 Chev Sedan from Otaki. It had only 32,000 original miles on the clock. It had been sitting in a shed for about 50 years prior. Then he found a 1939 Chev Ute on Trade Me. Being down the South Island didn’t deter him. She was shipped up, very tired and rough. But not for long! Naturally, it was fully restored back to its original state. We have travelled down to the South Island in the Coupe and Sedan. They brought much pleasure to people passing by, and to us, as we also always get a lot of pleasure from them. And someone always wants to buy our beautiful cars. Wendy’s job is to just wave and smile. She was allowed to try to drive the coup ONCE. After going a VERY short distance she was told, in an exasperated tone, to stop and never again did she drive it. Well ladies, it is a bit different to modern cars.. aye.. Eddie Boyd invited us to the Branch about 8 years ago, and we joined the VCC shortly after. Eddie, you are still talked about.
