FROM THE EDITORS DESK Greetings Members Welcome to readers of our August RIVET. Rather a quiet start with regard to news this month post the Annual Rally and pre the Daffodil Rally for Cancer. But I can still think of a few items that hopefully will entertain members reading this edition. I attended a most enjoyable NZMVC (Military Vehicle Club) gymkhana recently at Phillip and Gillian Avery’s property in Fordell. We are small in number at our local NZMVC branch but very keen, although I hasten to add that I generally baulk at long distance excursions in my old Willys Jeep. Great go anywhere vehicles but not really designed for hour upon hour on formed roads. I tend to suffer from “Jeep bum” and have some difficulty walking upright once we stop! Still heaps of fun travelling in convoy with fellow enthusiasts parading as veterans of past wars. Boys will be boys. Anyway the NZMVC gymkhanas have interesting variants to our VCC Branch version. E.g. slow racing where the last contestant is declared the winner over a predetermined track without coming to a stop, driving a course blindfolded and taking instructions from a navigator and various parking and manoeuvring exercises. All done on uneven terrain and the more mud the better! A favourite of mine from a previous gymkhana, is a see-saw where contestants try to balance their vehicle on top of a large see-saw. All great fun with great people. Richard Ching, whose late Father, Henry, may have been known to many of you, is a dab hand in setting up these courses. This makes me think of all the one car make clubs out there. The Model A enthusiasts is one grouping that springs to mind. Love to hear from our Branch members belonging to this group to enable me to run an article in a future RIVET. After all, look at the large number of these classic old A’s on the road still, even in our Branch alone. So how about it? I will be approaching owners I know to see if they are interested. Then there are the Morris Minor and Austin 7 owners cubs. I am a member of the Sunbeam Cub so I will soon be contacting our VCC Branch member and Sunbeam enthusiast, Peter Powell, for his assistance to bring this marque to you. Ray and Christine Savage from the Citroen Car Club have already contributed to these pages since my time as Editor. There must be so many others who could come forward with their favoured makes to throw some interest into the RIVET pages. Please don’t hesitate to contact me. I used to belong to the Chrysler Restorers Club based in Auckland, but due to the distance separating us, this has waned somewhat. I am in no way attempting to usurp the VCC, but simply to add interest with one car makes. I have just updated my aging phone camera. Had a complaint that my photography was not up to scratch, so Pete, I have taken this on board in an endeavour to improve my role as Editor. Should be all ok in the September edition. Also I have also been working with Hinemoa from H & A Print regarding some of the adverts in the RIVET not being very clear. Unsure as to how may readers take notice of our adverts, but these do provide much needed revenue for our Branch. Thank you Hinemoa for your expert guidance. She is also advising me regarding font size and type. After all, I am merely an old retired cock from the Poultry Farm! In this edition our Treasurer Neil and his mighty Vanguards grace the pages inside. In September it is Bruce Thomas opening his garage doors to his Vauxhall collection. That’s all for now. Chairman's Report — August 2022 Greetings Members What a great month we have had. Keith Turner took us on a great Sunday July run devoted to Bruce Ardell and ending up at the Higgie’s Paloma Gardens. We were thoroughly spoiled by the completely different roads and scenery. Neil, Christine and I have been going through the change of banking signatories’ process with the Club’s Bank. You would have less trouble gaining access to the SIS headquarters than the hoops we have had to jump through. Hopefully it has now been sorted. I really enjoyed listening to Richard Coxon, our August guest speaker. His knowledge and insight to our Energy Storage issues going forward was tremendous. I agree with Richard that the way forward will not be battery only vehicles, but much more “green” hydrogen fuel cell type systems. I do struggle to see how the hydrogen can be transferred into vehicle storage systems easily and safely. Still I struggle with operating my cell phone at times. Hopefully there will still be petroleum around for us to operate our vehicles for many years ahead. Neil, Sue & I are off to the VCC AGM in Auckland next week. I have now seen the Agenda and most of what will be discussed is pretty straight forward but there are a couple of items that may create some heated debate. Club Captain’s report — August 2022 Greetings drivers of old cars It was great to see a good turnout for our July club night. An excellent effort for the middle of winter and a very enjoyable evening hearing about John Jonese’s experiences, thanks John. Peter and Keith are doing an amazing job organising the Daffodil Rally so please remember to spread the word. Our September club night (7th) is our traditional Shiny Parts auction. This is bound to be a great night with some light hearted banter which often occurs, so make sure your wallet is well stocked for the night and you never know you might go home with some goodies and a few editorial eggs. Just a mention regarding what not to present for the auction though please: We do not want magazines-car mags or otherwise. If you have old mags cluttering up your place, then you can always leave car related ones in a tidy pile on the front desk in the clubrooms for members to browse through or take home. And as much as we love our RIVET, please do not leave them here, unless they are ancient ones which may have interesting tit-bits inside. Likewise Beaded Wheels, which we all receive two-monthly anyway. I thoroughly enjoyed Keith’s run in July and returning to Paloma gardens. Clive Higgie was in my class at school, his enthusiasm I find inspirational and always enjoy chatting with him. Thanks for having us. Driving around Keith’s run reminded me how much I love Wanganui and it gave me inspiration for our September Run. The theme is “What’s new and What’s nice in Wanganui”. The 18th is the day before the start of North Island Club Captains Tour so I am being cheeky and saying this is the Wanganui Club Captains run. It will be a slightly shorter run which should suit the older cars. I am hoping to see the veteran and vintage cars coming out of hibernation and getting a shakedown ready for summer.

Change of Venue for Scrutineering, Documentation + Event Briefing to Annesbrook Event Centre: Annesbrook Event Centre, 40 Saxton Road, Stoke, Nelson will now be the venue for all VCC and Targa scrutineering, documentation and event briefing on Friday 14th October. VCC scrutineering, documentation and event briefing will start at Annesbrook 8.30am Friday morning, finishing by midday, to leave the facility available for Targa Competition, Tour and Mainland Rally entrants for the afternoon. 3. Accommodation: Kingsgate Motel is now fully booked, but space is still available at Delorenzo's Apartments and Trailways Hotel. Accommodation within walking distance of central Nelson will be sought after. 4. Rally Safe: 4.1 For those VCC entrants new to our event, a Rally Safe power cable, must be ordered, paid for and installed in your car prior to scrutineering on Friday 14th October. 4.2 In addition, all VCC entrants must pay the $30 fittings hire fee to Rally Safe prior to event. 5. Interisland Ferry Bookings: For those travelling from the North Island, October inter-island bookings will be tight. Keith and Toni’s Departure Run for Past Chairman Bruce Ardell Submitted by Keith Turner and Toni Jenkins A good turnout of club members in cars and trucks departed the clubrooms on a predominantly left turn excursion. Due to the run being a tribute to Bruce Ardell, our immediate past Chairman, we had to cross ‘his’ Dublin Street Bridge and down a Service lane of his youth to view some murals then past Dave and Mihi McDermid’s Heritage home on the way to the Virginia Lake. A walk through the Aviary to view the Birds was suggested. Everyone proceeded down Victoria Ave through our Heritage themed main shopping area where Bruce is known to shop. Turning left at the Watt fountain we passed the Courthouse to view the Waimarie at her berth on the Whanganui River. Following the river down stream we saw ‘The Tram Shed’ with Whanganui’s restored Tram out on Track giving rides. Next passed was the War Memorial Centre which is the start/finish for the Daffodil Rally for Cancer, then across Bruce’s Dublin Bridge again. A short run to rural Fordell township (we affectionately call Bruce the Mayor of Fordell) led to Paloma Gardens with a stunning array of plants and sculptures, and an exceptional Motor Cycle Gallery gracing one corner of the property. We had our afternoon tea in a sheltered grassed area close to the car park. Bruce was presented with a “catch” of chocolate fish ( left) in recognition for services rendered by him and the committee steering a steady course through the pandemic.

Treasurer Neil’s Vanguard Pics 1961 Estate

The Vanguard Man This month, as promised, our esteemed Treasurer and Branch Delegate, Neil Farrer, has opened his garage doors to readers along with a synopsis of his joining up with the VCC. We are mighty pleased that Neil decided to join our Club, as this quietly spoken gentleman has been an integral cog within our branch for many years. One of the good guys is Neil. He has a real passion for our branch and the VCC movement in general. English cars appear to be where Neil’s love of vintage motoring seems to lie. He owns a veteran 1914 Rover van, a 1939 Hillman 14, a 1952 Triumph Renown and two Vanguards-a 1958 Ute and a 1961 Estate. I strongly suspect that it is the Vanguards which are the closest to his heart. This is why I asked Neil to submit a story about these fine old workhorse vehicles. My late Father owned a 1951 estate for many years for both private and farm use. This old car just went on and on... So armed with my notebook and soon to be retired camera, I visited Neil. Here is his story submitted by the man himself, which I feel will interest readers. Editor Ian
I have been playing around with older cars for many years. It started in 1957 in Palmerston when I nearly bought a Austin 10 (1937) from Warren Birch. Warren was a member of our Branch for a number of years. However in the end I bought a 1937 Ruby and for the next 10 years I always had an Austin, Austin big Seven (in Auckland) A30, several A35’s, Austin Mini Countryman -firstly an 850cc standard one and later one with a full Cooper S motor, a very fast vehicle but not good at stopping, plus an Austin Maxi and an Austin Princess. Then hard times, so several cars were sold and funds ploughed into property. Our former treasurer (Keith Paterson) was a good friend and he endeavoured to get me into VCC. At that stage I did not have suitable car , but then the Austin A35 appeared. Many rallies in that car, then Keith died and left me his Hillman Minx Coupe. So naturally a Hawke was purchased and then two Humber Super Snipes and other Singers and Hunters. The fleet grew to 12 . Incidentally after Keith died, Anne, (now Voss) looked after the Club’s finances and when she went overseas a couple of years later, I inherited the Treasurer’s job - which I still have today. In 2001 the 1958 Vanguard Ute came to my attention - so now we have a Vanguard story --

The Vanguard Story. Submitted by Neil The Standard Car Company was formed with the aim to produce quality vehicles build to a good standard. Over the years the quality production stood the company in good stead. Later Triumph was purchased and the name used a number of times. Vanguards were first marketed in 1948 ( Phase 1) the round backed model, then the Phase 2 with a boot. I had one and went to the International Vero Rally in Southland, but later sold the car. The cream 1954 Phase 2 featured in “Classic Car” in 2005. Out at my rural property there are Phase 2 and phase 3 parts cars. My 1958 Vanguard Ute was originally purchased by Ted and Irene Halliday and used on their farm. After Ted died the old Ute was parked in a shed waiting for a new life. I was told about the Ute by Ed Boyd. The daughter handling estate matters did not want to sell the Ute to just anybody. After looking at the Ute, it was in a sad state. But Heather and I came to an agreement. So Alan Osman and I ventured out with new battery, petrol, etc and tried to start the vehicle and it would not co-operate. In the finish, in frustration Alan drove my vehicle around the paddock, towing the Ute and with a bang and a cloud of blue smoke, it started and has never missed a beat since. After many discussions about the Vanguard Ute , Garth Stephenson admitted that he had done his apprenticeship building these - so the Ute ended up in Garth’s workshop - it was there for the next 7 years. The back end was a mess, but the southland beech timber in the well-side was sound and is there today. The tailgate needed extensive repair work. Stephen Voss worked wonders inside and the Ute was ready to travel again. There have been many adventures around the North and South Islands, including the 3rd Commercial Rally at Waimate where Stephen Voss and I had a lot of adventures both going south and returning north. Later the 4th Commercial Rally in Gisborne and the Manawatu 5th Commercial rally. The Ute has been a feature of my Beekeeping Business and Apiary Services Ltd . Speedo now reads 95000 miles and the motor has not been touched.
In the last 25 years other Standard Vanguard’s have come and gone. Two years ago a 1961 Vanguard 6 Estate joined the fleet. The motor, gearbox and diff were later used in the Triumph 2000 series. The Estate with overdrive is very comfortable and economical , achieving around 30 MPG on 95 octane. Bruce Ardell and I travelled in the car to Christchurch for the AGM last year. Many there commented on how rare this model is. Now just turned over 100000 miles and going well. Another acquisition was the 1952 Triumph Renown (right) Also known as Razor Edge cars due to the sharp angles a panel beaters nightmare. This car has been through a number of VCC members, mainly around the Auckland area, and is thought to be one of the best original Renown cars in NZ. At the moment it is in my garage for woodwork repairs around the rear mudguards and back window ( the car has a wooden frame) covered with aluminium and some panel steel. The motor, gearbox and diff are the same as the Phase1 Vanguard. Overdrive was an option, but not in this car. The design is similar to Bentley’s and Austin Sheerline cars. It was Standard’s answer to those - a quality vehicle aimed at the upper class business and family man. At only 64000 miles there is a lot of motoring left in this car.

Longstanding club member, Shane Hobman on the right, presenting to Chairman Andrew a framed advertising picture of (at the time) the all new Ford Model A’s. Shane was given this by his former employer at Harvey Round Motors at the closing down of this long established car retailing business. Shane was a mechanic at the dealership for many years. Very sad to see such an iconic business closing it’s doors. Sign of the times unfortunately. Many thanks Shane for your most thoughtful gesture I’ll bet that many a Model A enthusiast would love to have this hanging on their shed wall!
