Chairmans Notes Greetings Everyone I’ve just heard the All Blacks got beaten again. Ozy flags up and I can feel a good week coming on. October the 18th Toni and Keith’s Sunday run, “Well what about it”. I’m not used to frequenting alleyways and I never knew there were so many murials in Whanganui. Mostly great art work but some I don’t relate to, (Too Young). Very interesting and enjoyable run I suppose only problem was I was the driver/navigator that day and unfortunately brought my heaviest, nearly two tons, 1961 Vanden Plas car out for that run. Hundreds of sharp turns and manoeuvres plus writing down answers and with no power steering and getting in and out of the car myself to find some of the answers, “Well that’s what about it”! Next time it will be the morgan or mini for me. Thanks you two anyway. November club night we had a very good muster of members to partake in Karen and Lee Taylors’, (Last year's winners), efforts in organising a run. Well done you guys, entertaining, Interesting with winners Ted and Genny Mathews being presented with the , “Emerson Night Trial” cup and having a year to plan for the next night trial. Ladies’ run on 15th November is being organised by last years winner Dale Whitaker. Anyone can come on this run but the overall winner must be a lady driver. I enjoyed the article in last months RIVET about Ian & Francis Higgins collection and passion of Chrysler vehicles. Well done Peter & Ian for sharing your story with us, And other members, I’m sure Peter would be only too happy to interview you and do a report for the mag. Club working bee at the clubrooms 21st November 9am to 12 and you will get a free morning tea. A number of jobs to do + trees to trim. Bring some tools. continued
Restoration of the year and items of interest is on the calendar for 2nd December. As I requested last month vehicles plus interesting items for the table and any projects, part way through, that members may be interested in viewing. Voting, as usual, will be done during the evening. Christmas Parade December 12th, please assemble in Cook street at 1pm for the 2pm parade. Period dress and some decoration please. Dave Mc Dermid and marshalls will be looking after you. The more the merrier, let’s put on a good show for the city. October’s Sunday Run Well it’s obvious that Keith and Toni believe we need to be a little more Arty and a lot less “Farty" as they decided to educate us on the finer side of Whanganui’s buildings. They pointed us in every direction known to man, and woman, to ensure we had full exposure to the paint that has been spread all over town in order to liven up what would have otherwise been drab old brick walls. Unlike some of our runs we were guided around with correct number of rights and lefts and shockingly they were in the correct order. Toni was spotted at various points, camera in hand, checking that there were no infringements and also popping off a few shutter flashes to record any insurrections that may be occurring. Speed, in our case, was something we did not have to worry about as Keith had loaned us a Wanganui made Suzuki Alto. This was most kind of him, or was he deliberately trying to restrict our ability to complete the whole course? (Not at all the case as the little Suzuki ran beautifully all afternoon) Many contestants were overheard commenting on how many artworks they had seen that they had not noted previously. End result was a decisive win for Tom and Lyndel Wilson and a good run was had by all.

Gumboot Rally 2021 GUMBOOT RALLY Starting at the Taihape Domain 9am Usual Format – entry is by purchasing a Raffle ticket to defray expenses. Club Captain’s Report Hello to you all
Thank you to Keith and Toni for organising the October Sunday Run. It was a thoroughly enjoyable tour of the River City and suburbs taking in all the details of the beautiful Murals painted on building walls. The driver and navigator team who managed to get most of the answers correct were Thomas and Lyndel. Well done team. The Night Trial on Wednesday 4 November 2020 was a ‘good fun run’ around the City on a fine balmy evening with some 20 cars departing the Clubrooms. The Trial included 32 questions on various landmarks and building names etc. Ted and Genny Matthew’s observation skills were best of the evening and took home the goodies. Special thanks to Lee and Karen for their efforts in putting together a great Trial for us. Cheers guys. On Sunday 15 November we will have our annual Ladies Run – come along for the afternoon run and bring some afternoon tea to share which can be left at the Clubrooms. We’ll return there after the run. Meet at at the normal time. Don’t forget the Club working bee on Saturday 21 November 2020 from 9am to 12 noon to tidy-up the grounds and a couple of jobs on the Clubrooms – come along and help us keep our meeting place in great condition. Next Club Night is Wednesday 2 December 2020 and will be Restoration of the Year Night – bring along your restored vehicles and items of interest for us all to view. WELLINGTON 63RD ANNUAL RALLY. Held 7 -8 November. This year I participated in the Rally. Starting at Featherston Saturday Morning 31 Vehicles lined up plus 8 Marshalls. Leaving Featherston to behind Martinborough using roads I have never been on, through Longbush and Ngaumu Forest and ending up at Riversdale Beach for lunch. I have never been to Riversdale so that was interesting. The morning was fine and very pleasant driving – even on the gravel section. The afternoon was a drive back at your own preferred route to Masterton and then back to Wellington. Over the hill in Rain and wind!! At the start – 2 questions – name the two new Life Members awarded at the Wanganui AGM. Further questions at Marshall stops - Name the new Minister of Transport. Then an object with two feeler gauges and a small round tube – which without my reading glasses I guessed either a Spark Plug gauge or Distributor gauge. It was a distributor gauge Then as we approached the forest – the timed section - and during it another marshall stop - question name the brand of tyre and size on your front wheel. ( I did not have any idea what was on the Vanguard Estate but could remember the correct imperial size – not the metric radial 185 x 15) Continue on the timed section – and a marshall stop in the Forest. Then on to Riversdale. In the evening a very nice meal at the Club-rooms and presentation of Rally prizes , plus four members received their 50 year badge from President Diane Quarrie. Each table had four schedules A4 with questions - Related to the Road code, General TV questions as to who was in what programs (one I knew was that Alfred Hitchcock was in all of his movies), General knowledge questions on such as "what do you call a gathering of Camels, or a group of Apes) and the final page about 9 vehicle emblems to identify. It was a filler for everyone during the meal and after the prize giving the answers were read out. Our table did well on the road code questions but not so well on the other pages. Sunday – weather was shocking - blowing and very wet - it had been very stormy all night - BUT no leaks in the Vanguard which was great. Meet at Southwards for their Sunday morning show and shine - Due to the weather only hardy souls gathered. All told 450 miles covered in the Vanguard and a great weekend.
