Chairman Bruce’s notes Greetings All, Autumn is upon us and still a busy month ahead of us. The spin off from the January Vintage Weekend Burma Rally brought nearly $4 million into the local economy over the 4 days so it’s well worth the effort. The Art Deco was an enjoyable 4 days with a good number from Whanganui. Thursday was the commercial rally only and was supported by the O’Keeffes. Friday was Rally Day with Saturday Clubrooms and Main Parade. This year the focus was on Indian Motorcycles (well represented) from 1918 - 1950s, and commercial vehicles, 36 in all and general entrants. The first 300 were allowed in the parade, some magnificent cars - shame you only see them at Art Deco. Jennifer organised Saturday dinner night at the RSA for 28 of us, then it was on the town for the late evening of entertainment. Sunday was Derry Racing which is huge in Napier, and the Gadsby Picnic which is one of my favourites to view. Dozens of gazebos and people dressed for the occasion. Ballarat, Australia saw 8 of us, 3 Boyds, Rob O’Keeffe, 3 Haycocks, Nigel and me fly there for 5 days for
the swapmeet and places of interest. Apart from the continual dust which keeps the commercial vendors away and the mainly 60s 70s era stuff. It was the best swapmeet layout I have seen in my 50 years. Firslty, all sellers had a good sized site, (larger than here). All in straight rows in a huge paddock. Very easy to move along and easy to go back to if required. With the larger plots they lay most of their stuff out on the ground and table for viewing (not in boxes like in NZ). The swapmeet covered Friday and Saturday and you walked 26KM to view it all. Ask Rob about the lovely quart castrol oil bottle and top he bought for Linda. What a great turn out for the March Club night and nice to see a number of visitors joining us to hear Peter Clifford, International Motorcycle Racer, Team Manager/Owner, Journalist and TV commentator, speak to us. I also enjoyed presenting the Willing Horse Volunteer Award to Rob O’Keeffe for his service; displays, promotions, galas etc. were all part of his efforts. Thanks Rob. My Sunday run is this weekend, 17 March. Places of interest around town and a plate for afternoon tea back at the Club Rooms. That’s my lot Cheers,

I didn't get old on purpose, it just happened. If you're lucky, it could happen to you! I have been in many places, but I've never been in Kahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Kahoots with someone. I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there. I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work. I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore. I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often. I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm. Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older. One of my favorite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get! I may have been in Continent, but I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing. They tell me it is very wet and damp there.

From the desk of Frank James, Wanganui Branch Club Captain Hello to you all. Club night for February was held on Wednesday 6 February 2019 out at the Wanganui Airport with a visit to the International Commercial Pilot Academy’s premises. We saw a great turnout of more than 60 Club Members for this evening. Chief Executive Phillip Bedford gave a very enlightening introduction into the work of the Academy followed by a tour of the impressive buildings which include a hanger that had 14 planes housed in it when we were there. Thanks to Charlie Anderson who helped make this visit happen. The Gymkhana that was scheduled for Sunday 24 February 2019 had to be cancelled because of the heavy rain that arrived in the early hours of the Sunday morning and the ongoing bad weather for the remainder of the day. An unfortunate happening when we have been experiencing such a fine hot summer but that’s what happens sometimes. Maybe next February will shine nicely on us! Continued
The next Sunday Club Run will be held on 17 March 2019 (St Patrick’s Day) – Bruce Ardell is organising this so come along and enjoy the ride. Meet at the VCC Clubrooms as usual at 1 o’clock and bring a plate of afternoon tea that can be left in the Clubrooms while we go out for the run. Club Night for April will include an interesting talk from Heidi Armstrong a Hearing Specialist who works in Wanganui – see you all on Wednesday 3 April 2019.The River City Park Up organised by the Wanganui Road Rodders Club will be held on Sunday 7 April 2019 at the City College grounds – VCC members who would like to display their vehicles please meet at 7:45am in Nelson Street and we’ll then move over just before 8 o’clock to City College entering through the Nelson/ Bassett Street gate. $5 per vehicle with all proceeds going to the Cancer Society. March Guest speaker, Peter Clifford has a long association with Whanganui but spends most of the year travelling around the world following his motor cycle racing interests. He is currently a leading light in the management of the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup an organisation that is devoted to searching the world for the most promissing young motorcycle racers and giving them the oportunity to become world class riders. 2019 is the 13th season of the Rookies Cup and 184 riders from 34 different nations have been involved. By the end of this year there will have been 156 races. Rookies have already gone on to win 88 Grand Prix on their way to six World Championships. In total they have stood on the Grand Prix podium 260 times, sometimes making it a clean sweep of the top three positions Previously he has raced motorbikes, toured europe and northern africa on motorbikes, design engines, managed a Grand Prix racing team, performed as a TV presenter and covered the Grand Prix races many time over as a journalist. During his summer visits to Whanganui he takes time to inspire kids at Churton school to follow their dreams and encourges them to take in interest in engineering. He painted us a brief a picture of his life that has been encompassed in motorcycle racing and all of its aspects and kept everyone enthralled with his very varied activities all over the globe. For those of you that missed it you missed a lot and as with most of our monthly guest speakers he provided a very good nights entertainment with lots of interaction. Great night, thanks Peter
