Chairmans Notes Greetings all - No Art Deco this year for me and Jennifer. Council cancelled events but the VCC continued with their organised events. We look ford to next year. - Blue smoke and pedals and posh picnic went off without a hitch. Thanks to all who made the effort to dress up and bring along and enjoy their posh picnic. The trees on Williamson Domain make a lovely setting for this event. Picnick presentation prize for this event went to Elizabeth Wilson, (Lisa Turner’s daughter). You should have seen her set up, delightful. After some serious competition between the young and not so young in the blue smoke and pedals gymkhana part and after a run off the Don Simpson Trophy was presented to Paige Forsyth (Evans 14 year old granddaughter.) after a perfect round. -M a r c h c l u b n i t e s a w g o o d n u m b e r s entertained by our guest speaker Murray Crawford, Wanganui historian and author. We are blessed having these people that spend considerable time researching Wanganui history and local motoring events. His topic was early horse drawn transport hirage through to the first motor car hirage to the residents of Wanganui and districts in 1905, including reports of early infringements for exceeding 8 and 12mph, and dangerous driving (even in Victoria Ave). Very enjoyable evening. - I requested the help of committee and some younger members to dismantle the old “Overlands Club” building that was part of our Clubrooms property back fence. Thanks to all job done. Now just the new fence to be erected. - What a delightful cover photo of Ian and Fay Chamberlain on the Reo

New Plymouth 2022 is fast approaching and all entrants will be required to enclose a V.I.C. number. Download or ask me for the form and get them to me or Shane a.s.a.p. Keep it simple and answer all the questions. Any problems ring us. - On a sadder note we had the passing of Merv Warner from New Plymouth on 20 Februaryt 2021. Merv attended most of our rallies and club events over many years either in his Rolls Royce or in latter years has Wolseley 4/44. A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.. Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks. 'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?' 'Sure.' 'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks. 'No, I can remember it.' 'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?' He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.' 'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down?' she asks. Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it, for goodness sake!' Then he toddles into the kitchen. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment. 'Where's my toast?'

Programme: Saturday 17th 8.00 am - Clubrooms open to collect Rally Packs and cuppa 8.30 am - Close of Day entries (Meals not available) 9.00 am - Trial
Briefing 9.30 am - First Entrant away 4.00 pm - Completion of runs and cuppa 6.00 pm - Drinks, to be followed by informal smorgasbord meal for ticket holders and prizegiving. If you are not having a meal you are very welcome to come along and enjoy the prizegiving.
Sunday 18th 9.30 am – Clubrooms will be open for morning tea and farewell.

The Autumn Motorcycle Trial is open to anyone and any motorcycle. To compete for VCC prizes vehicles must be eligible as defined by club rules and be entered by a financial member of the VCC of NZ Inc, and either the owner of the vehicle or the driver on the day shall be a member of the club, or if resident from overseas, a member of a recognized overseas organisation. All vehicles are expected to be in a clean and tidy state of presentation. VCC members with non-eligible vehicles, and non-club members with vehicles up to 31 December 1990 are welcome to complete as guests and compete for the Classic Class prizes.

Rolling Thunder The New Zealand Military Vehicles Club was established in 1979 and is dedicated to providing an organisation for military vehicle enthusiasts, historians and collectors of New Zealand and international ex military vehicles. The NZMVC has 350 members and in excess of 700 vehicles nationwide in various stages of restoration, from unrestored to mint condition. The Wanganui branch was established in 1979 and for many years was a busy and active club with a strong membership. In 2021, we have only 8 active members, but with new members and vehicles coming into the club we believe we are on a bounce. Club members own, drive and display a Dodge WC52 and a Dodge WC57, both WWII US military vehicles, a Dodge M37, Korean War US military, as well as Ford and Willys Jeeps and a Ford GTB. Over Easter Weekend 2021, the Wanganui club i s hosting the Annual Easter Rally and AGM. The event will be based at the Top10 Holiday Park, Aramoho and Churton School. Events will include a vehicle line up at the War Memorial forecourt on the Friday afternoon, half day and full day Rally’s over roads and farmland and a Gymkana’s as well as the important business of the AGM. In addition the participants will be encouraged to go on guided visits to local museums and sheds as well as the food and entertainment facilities that Whanganui has to offer. Current registrations are about 25 vehicles, but we expect as in the past, many will flood in, in the last 10 days and a lot of decisions are dependant on the covid level status and restrictions. Members vehicles include 2WD and 4WD military soft skinned trucks, tracked vehicles including bren gun carriers, White half tracks and GKN Sankey APC’s and artillery pieces, QF 25 pounder field guns, QF 6 pounders and anti tank guns. The Wanganui branch of the NZMVC is excited about hosting this annual event and looking forward to the military vehicles on show and around the district over Easter Weekend 2021. It will be exciting to get a wide variety of vehicles in Whanganui, but to quote Forrest Gump “My Mom said, life was like a box of chocolates , you never know what you are going to get” Article and Photos by Murray Woodhouse Wanganui VCC member.

Club Captain’s Report for March 2021 Hello to you all The Blue Smoke and Pedals Event together with Posh Picnic was held on Sunday 14 February 2021 at Williams Domain and was a very enjoyable afternoon held in fine sunny weather. Thanks to Bill, Dick and helpers for making the afternoon happen. Overall winner was Paige Forsyth We will have a ‘Sunday Run’ on 21 March 2021 with Pat and Sandra Carrick organising the drive for us. Please meet at the Clubrooms by 1:00 pm for 1.15 pm departure – bring picnic afternoon tea, chairs etc with you or enjoy light snacks or refreshing drinks which will be available at our at afternoon tea stop. Pat says if your car has an allergy or dislike to gravel then this is not the run for it, but hop in with someone else and enjoy the afternoon. Our Guest Speaker at the next Club night on Wednesday 7 April will be Jim Norris – a local man with wide ranging interests who I’m sure you will find very interesting – see you all along that evening. The River City Park Up organised by the Wanganui Road Rodders Club will be held on Sunday 11 April 2021 at the City College grounds – VCC members who would like to display their vehicles please meet at 7:45 am in Nelson Street and we will then move just before 8:00 am over to City College entering through the Nelson/Basset Street gate. $5 per vehicle with all proceeds going to the Whanganui Cancer Society. Love to see lots of you there with your vehicles. The Annual Motorcycle Trial will be held on Saturday 17 April – if you would like to come over to the Clubrooms to have a look the first motorcycles will be leaving at 9:30 am.
