Chairmans Notes Greetings members. All the best for the New Year. - New Year’s Day - Jennifer and I joined the Bulls Sub Branch “Len Haycock Run”. 30 + cars assembled in Bulls, including a number of Wanganui members, for a leisurely back road drive to Duddings Lake for lunch and get together. - Vintage Weekend marshalls are required for the Saturday “Wheels on Victoria”. We will be setting up the gazebo in the same place as last year and be promoting the VCC Club including giving away Beaded Wheels mags and flyers and Vintage Weekend brochures. Some nice friendly faces required. Phone me or Frank asap. -Christmas Parade - what a cracker of a day and event for the city. The time and effort some people spend on floats is remarkable. A good muster of club vehicles were part of a 2 hour parade, all nicely decorated in tinsel. We even had a certain member decorate her green A35 van to look like a Christmas present. This year we were also promoting ‘Vintage Weekend” in the parade. All Club vehicles had posters on them and the club truck had 2 “Vintage Weekend” core flute 2.4 x 1.2 signs mounted on the back. Thanks Linda O. All members were dressed in their Vintage Weekend attire inc Bill and Heather J who walked alongside my 1938 Chevrolet Fire Engine handing out Vintage Weekend brochures. Well done everyone. - The inaugural “Highland Fling” rally in Taihape and the “National North Island Easter Rally” hosted by Horowhenua Branch are coming up in April. A number of locals have already entered. After the Vintage Weekend give both some thought. Both quite different but will be most entertaining. - Frank and I have organised a number of interesting runs and speakers for this year. We will keep you posted. That’s my lot. 1920 Triumph lives again I had often admired the veteran Triumph Model H as used in WW1, but thought I would have to sell 2 bikes to get one. So when I spotted a similar Model SD on TradeMe in bits, my 73 Trident went straight on for sale. The rusty bike had been dragged out of a shed in Christchurch early 1980s, then 10 years later bought by Mr Whiteman, who started the restoration. The tank was rebuilt and painted, frame powder coated, and the wheels and a few other bits nickel plated. Also a few new cycle parts included. The first job was the motor, after trying to source the correct piston with not much luck, I found a BSA B33 piston was the same bore size and only 2 mm longer, so went with that. I considered drilling oil holes through it or leaving the oil ring out to the lube the top end, but decided on running upper cylinder lube in the fuel instead. The cylinder’s threaded exhaust flange was broken off and missing, so a new one machined up and spigotted, and bronze welded into place. The bore needed a light rebore, and I turned a couple of millimetres off the piston top. After a few crankshaft repairs, new bigend and main bearings, working out how the 2 de-compressors worked, and cam timing set, the motor was assembled. The timing cover screws, which were 7/32 x 32 TPI, were machined from 10mm stainless bolts, the crank case bolts started life as ¼ x 4” SS bolts with original looking large round heads welded on, and their dome nuts machined and filed (don’t have a mill) from 16mm SS bolts.
The clutch was a few plates short of a pack, but as I did have some samples it was easy to get them waterjet cut to match. The clutch release bearing was also missing, and the closest available size was way too thick, so a couple more hours with the lathe and grinder it was persuaded to fit. The gearbox bearings were a similar story, with inside out outer diameters common sizes, the width was not, so more grinding required. The gearbox had had a bearing failure, (probably why it was left in the shed in the first place), and 2 of the gears were damaged. After searching for a complete box or bits, I ended up doing a home repair, including many hours with a Dremel and oil stone. The worn-out gearbox, crank, and mag sprockets were an easy repair as the centres were all good, so just a matter of turning off and welding on new sprockets to suit. The exhaust was made up of bits I had in the shed, the header pipe is 4 bits of damaged 750 Bonneville pipes cut up, and the bends welded together for the correct curve, filed and nickel plated for looks, the rest is an assortment of exhaust pipe bits. The chain guard rear section came from the Levin Swapmeet, the front made from a Briggs and Stratton pull-start, an axle cap and a piece of panel steel, all cobbled together to look like the original. Amazing what a bit of paint can hide. The rest, wheel bearings, steering head and fork bearings, cables, carb, etc. were all relatively straight forward with a bit of Kiwi No.8 wire technology. Our local VCC Chairman, Bruce, put a lot of time into getting it legal, and when I first spoke to him about it he said “ I think I’ve got an owner’s manual for one of these” which he did, in good condition, and was happy to part with. Over the two days you will travel over a few sealed roads, numerous unsealed roads, and farm tracks which will test your motoring skills. You will also view some of the most spectacular countryside in the North Island. Rally Briefings on both days will be held outside the Gretna Hotel in Hautapu Street, Taihape.

Happy New Year for 2020 - I hope it is a great year for you with plenty of enjoyable motoring, Club Night for January 2020 will be on Wednesday 8 January and will be a BBQ picnic in the Clubrooms grounds – bring along your favourite foods and drinks and we’ll supply meat from the BBQ, buns and a few drinks. See you all there from 5:30pm. Vintage Weekend is drawing near with the Burma Rally to be held on Sunday 19 January – please get your entries in now as they close on 10 January 2020. If you are not Rallying please let me know if you can help with Marshalling during the Rally. Don’t forget to include all of your vehicles in the Wheels on Victoria display on Saturday the 18th, parking open from 08:00 hrs and then onto the Mitre 10 Mega Classic Cruise. Meet at 4pm at Mitre 10 Mega car park, pay your $5 to enter the Mitre 10 Mega sponsored draw. There are two routes, one long and one short but both timed to be approximately 1 hour long. Both runs end at The Grand Hotel where the above mentioned draw will be held. Thank you to everyone who took part in the Christmas Parade – a very good turnout of vehicles well decorated for the occasion. The 2019 Christmas Parade was one of the best with a lovely fine day to enjoy it.
The ‘Gumboot Rally’ at Taihape on Wednesday 1 January 2020 was very well attended with some 27 cars participating. The Rally covered some 95 miles of mostly sealed roads with a few miles of gravel roads thrown in to keep us on our toes! The weather was the normal hot sunny conditions for the inland town and great not to have the winds up there. Some ten vehicles from Wanganui travelled to Taihape for the Rally and everyone had a very enjoyable time with Ian and Frances Higgins who were Rallying in Taihape for the first time winning the event, See front page. Recent VCC 50 year badge recipient Barry Cleaver won the raffle. Congratulations to everyone. A big thank you to Robert Baines and his helpers including ‘tail-endcharlie’ Wayne Holling for organising the usual very enjoyable day. One of the highlights of the day was seeing Shane and Noeline in their recently acquired 57 Chevrolet Bel Air Sedan, ex Peter Quilter. Many of you know this vehicle well and will also know it hasn’t been this far from Whanganui for a very very long time. Good motoring and see you all again soon.
