Thanks to the VCC Members and friends for assiting Hospice sell the Cemetary Circuit Programs on Boxing day. 2hrs at a gate + free entry to a great day’s racing. I will be looking for extra volunteers next year New Years day Jennifer and I joind the “Bulls Sub Branch” Len Haycocks run. 33 cars assembled in Bulls for a leisurly back road drive to Eliston Reserve in Tangiomana for lunch and get together. A number of local members attended Vintage weekend marshals & Raffle ticket sellers are still required for the Saturday “Wheels on Victoria Ave. Phone me on 3427713, also get your rallty entries in to Linda ASAP I have organised a number of interesting speakers for this year so will keep you informed Note, the February meeting is at the International Commercial Pilots’ Academy Wanganui at the airport. 7:30pm start. Bring a plate with you as supper will be in their building. Feb 24th is the Gymkhana at Charlie and Cathy Anderson’s place. We are looking for a good muster and day. Jim O’Neill is organising the day.
On a sadder note we had the passing of Jonathan Preston, Raetihi. Almost 50 year’s membership and the owner of some interesting and historic vehicles. Farewell my friend. That’s my lot.

Wheels on Victoria 2019 Saturday the 19th, open from 10am, cars welcome from 8am through to 3pm Any Classic car is welcome to join the display on Victoria Ave, there are no restrictions. Enter from Maria Place and you will be directed to your parking spot. Spend an hour or so viewing and discussing the fabulous array of vehicles through the ages
Mitre 10 Mega Classic Cruise 2019 Meet at Mitre 10 Mega Car Park from 4pm onwards. Entry to the fabulous Mitre 10 Mega Prize draw is $5 per car and makes you eligible for the fabulous prizes drawn at The Grand Hotel. Two routes to choose from, the Short Route in town and the Long Route including a rural section. Both routes are about an hour long and terminate at The Grand Hotel for a drink and the Prize draw. 2019 Gumboot Rally Well that’s another good start to what will be another fantastic year, The Annual World Famous Gumboot Rally. First I may have to own up to a slight error in last month’s RIVET, this rally was in January 2019 and not as a d v e r t i s e d , December 2018 but it didn’t seem to put anyone off as the attendance was the best I have ever seen and why not? Once again the weather was perfect, but isnt it always and Robert had set out a very decent length run for us all. We, the Wanganui branch were quite well represented with some staying overnight and others, like us, travelling up on the actual day. Far surpassing the Whanganui Branch turn out was that of the Central Hawks Bay as can be seen from this BBQ photo after the event at Jack and Lindsay Horton’s who very generously hosted us once again. Right back to the run, we were advised that the morning and afternoon halves would be approximately 40 miles long and I would say they were. We were told by the ever capable Robert Baines that we were to look for yellow VCC containers that would be distributed along the route and when we saw them we were to collect a playing card from each one that were to be handed in at the finish. All good you would think, but then we didn’t know that we would, on at least one occassion, have to guess which route was the correct one to lead us to these VCC containers. Now this was a very good idea as it stimulated our brains, something that quite a few of us could benefit from. I digress, we shot off and turned into Thrush St which became Titi St and then, using our own gumption we went down Lark St which led us to the next instruction, “!st Left into Pukeko St”. A good morning run was enjoyed by all, sorry by most, and we arrived at Mataroa Hall with its beautiful Rimu floor and ceiling for our lunch. I say most as one of our members arrived considerably later than most and also, along with Tail End Charlie, from the opposit direction to everyone else. I suppose it doesn’t matter but it does make you wonder what goes on with some navigators
A pleasant lunch stop was enjoyed by all and then off we went once again on some of the areas smoothest gravel sections and some of their longest gradients, I only say this as I watched my normally well behaved temperature guage climbing ever so close to that bright red section on the right, but have no fear we were then treated to a lovely downhill section and an, “Acute Left” which left even the little Riley Elf with the front end hanging over the spectacular drop on the driver’s side as pointed out to me by my granddaughter. All attendees seemed to arrive back at the BBQ with no dramas and everyone settled down to a chinwag. BBQ was courtesy of Nerve Steadman and was followed by the presentation of prizes. As per normal their were many prize packs laid out on the blankets, Taihape always go the extra mile for the Gumboot and this year was no exception. Winners this year were Sandra and Lynn Cross who were visiting once again and they took away the Gumboot Trophy with their the replica. Many others were called up for consolation and raffle prize draws prior to their trips home.This years record turnout I think will be beaten next year and I for one will certainly be there. CHRISTMAS PARADE 2018 The Christmas Parade for 2018 was held on Saturday afternoon of 8 December on what was a very fine and sunny day. The number of floats in the Parade was very impressive with many four wheel motorbikes and mobility scooters dressed-up with great enthusiasm and creativity to go with the more traditional floats. The Wanganui Vintage Club was well represented in the Parade with some 15 vehicles joining in with many adorned with various Christmas decorations. The Parade took around 45 minutes to make its way from Cook Street along Ingestre Street and down Victoria Avenue – a great afternoon in our lovely City. Thank you to everyone who came along and joined in and hope you enjoyed the afternoon too as you all provided a lot of joy for the big crowd on the day.
Old John, who had been unwell for some time, was on his deathbed upstairs at home. John’s favourite food in the entire world was chocolate chip cookies. As he lay there, gasping for each breath, he was sure he could smell freshly-baked chocolate chip cookies. John crawled out of bed and slowly limped downstairs towards the smell of the baked goods. Sure enough, across the kitchen, he spotted a large platter of chocolate chip cookies sitting in the middle of the table. He finally made his way across the kitchen and with his hands shaking, reached for a cookie. Suddenly, his wife appeared from the lounge room and gave her husband a slap on the hand. “Don’t touch those,” she hissed. “They’re for the funeral.”

Happy New Year for 2019 - I hope it is a great year for you with plenty of enjoyable motoring, Entries for the Burma Rally to be held on Sunday 20 January 2019 are coming through very well – if you haven’t entered as yet please do so immediately as the closing date is Friday 11 January 2019. Join in and don’t miss the fun. Vintage weekend will sure be a great weekend again in Wanganui so come along to as many of the functions and activities as you can as there will be plenty of enjoyable times to be had. I look forward to seeing you at our Picnic Club Night on Wednesday 9 January 2019 to be held at the VCC Clubrooms commencing at 5:30pm. Come along and bring whatever you want to eat as well as the sausages and meat patties we’ll provide from the BBQ. Club night for February will be Club night with a difference as it will be held out at the Wanganui Airport with a visit to the International Commercial Pilot Academy. The Chief Executive Phillip Bedford will give us a tour and introduction to the Academy. Meet at the normal time of 7:30 and bring along something for supper like we normally do for our Club nights. See you out there on Wednesday 6 February 2019. The ‘Gumboot Rally’ held at Taihape on New Year’s day 2019 was good fun but there is plenty of improvement to be had in mine and my navigator’s Rallying – we’ll work on it and perhaps a visit to the Optometrist may assist us both! I’ll get all the dust out of the A35 over the next few months!

Kevin is 40 years old and is still single. He meets a mate for lunch one day and the friend is curious as to why Kevin isn’t yet married. “Can’t you find a woman who will be a good enough wife?” the friend asks. Kevin shakes his head. “I’ve actually found many women I want to marry, but every time I bring them home to meet my parents, my mother can’t stand them.” The friend thinks for a moment and comes up with the perfect solution. “Why don’t you just find a girl who is just like your mother?” Two months later, the men meet again and talk quickly turns to Kevin’s love life. “Did you find a perfect girl? Does your mother love her?” he asks. With a loud sigh, Kevin explains that he has found the perfect girl but that he’s also run into another problem. “She was just like my mother and my mother loved her,” he says. Scratching his head, the friend asks Kevin why is still upset. “What’s the problem?” he asks. “My father doesn’t like her.”
