Chairmans Notes Greetings Members, all the best for 2021 • New Year’s Day, Jennifer and I joined Len Haycocks “Bulls Branch” run. Fifty plus cars assembled in Bulls for a leisurely run to Mt Lees Reserve for a get together and lunch with a number of our branch members enjoying the outing. • Christmas Parade - what a cracker of a day and event for the City. A record 40 plus floats and a good muster of Club vehicles turned out. My 1935 Dennis Fire Engine was full of people dressed in vintage weekend attire with some walking behind handing out the Vintage Weekend Brochures. • Vintage Weekend - Marshalls are required for the Saturday “Wheels on Victoria”/ We will be setting up the gazebo in the same place as last year and be promoting the VCC Club including giving away Beaded Wheels magazines. Phone me or Frank asap. • The Committee and I have organised a number of interesting runs and speakers for the year which should keep you all entertained. All meeting dates and runs will be listed in the Rivet Club Calendar. • Cell Phones - I had a number of complaints during the restoration of the year evening and the next day about phones going off all the time. All members are requested to turn off their phones when entering the club rooms. • That’s my lot. Got builders with Keith T and Peter H to check on.

Club Captain’s Report Hello to you all
Happy New Year for 2021. I hope it is a great year for you with plenty of enjoyable motoring. Well done to everyone who came along to the Christmas Parade – it was a very entertaining parade held on a fine but windy day with a good number of our Vintage vehicles participating. Thank you to everyone who bought their vehicles along and added to the fun of the day. The Gumboot Rally was the usual fun event held in Taihape on a very hot and sunny New Years Day – see separate report elsewhere in the Rivet about this Rally. Club Night for January 2021 will be on Wednesday 13 January 2021 and will be a BBQ picnic in the Clubrooms grounds – bring along your favourite foods and drinks and we’ll supply meat from the BBQ, buns and a few drinks. See you all there from 5:30pm onwards. Vintage Weekend is drawing near with the Burma Rally to be held on Sunday 24 January 2021– please get your entries in as soon as you can – closing date for Entries is 15 January 2021. There are plenty of events to be involved with starting from the Friday night get together through to the run on Monday. February 2021 Club Night will be on Wednesday 3 February and our Guest Speaker will be Brian Deadman who I’m sure will have plenty of interesting things for us to hear about. The Blue Smoke and Pedals Event together with a Posh Picnic will be held on Sunday 14 February 2021 at Williams Domain which adjoins our Clubrooms in Patapu Street in Whanganui East - meet there by 1:30pm. 2021 Gumboot Rally
Hard to know where to start but I suppose it must be meeting Robert Bains fresh out of hospital. Robert not only attended the start, but also did the drivers briefing and organised the prize giving. Not bad after months in hospital and only being released days before the rally, what a star. The other mention must go to Neil Farrer who, with Roberts guidance, took over the administration of this years rally, but more of that later. Thanks Neil, you did a fine job. 31 cars registered, not bad for a 9am new years day start, some stayed overnight and others travelled to Taihape in the morning, once again we had entrants from both the East and West coasts as well as Taihape locals. We took off on time at 9:30am in glorious weather and, as normal, were treated to some of New Zealand's spectacular scenery. The brief was follow the route given, at least it was in the morning, and pick a card from the yellow ammunition boxes that Neil had deposited at various locations along the route. Not too many metal roads this year and I believe we all reached the fabulous lunch spot at River Valley. Continued.

During lunch I was approached by our club captain who enquired as to the whereabouts of the afternoon instructions. I had no knowledge of these documents location so we asked Dave and Lyne Austin but again drew a blank so we all decided they would probably be with Wayne, our "Tail End Charlie" but once again we were rewarded with a blank face. Now without naming names it seems that someone who had an "Interest", (Clue number 1), in the safety of the documents, had banked, (Clue number 2) them and as he Treasured them, (Clue Number 3) had driven off with them as he set the afternoon card boxes and filled them with cards. Disaster was avoided when Wayne handed over his route map and gave some clues as to the route back to Taihape so off we went. Well that was true for most but my little Riley Elf, with little Riley Elf wheels, decided it did not like going up the hill to exit River Valley so I had to eject my
passengers and also managed to blow my exhaust off the silencer going round the last bend. Not to worry a few minutes work, assisted by my Loyal Friends, Steven and Dave and off we went again. (See photos) Back home in Taihape the points were counted and Steven and Claudia-Ann were pronounced this years winners and Barry Reardon was given the Main draw prize, a fabulous hamper. As normal all the rest of us were also handed out survival prizes of spectacular standard to take home. Also we were invited to join in the complimentary BBQ. All in all another fine New Years day with really good company, see you all again next year.
