Chairmans Notes Greetings all and sundry January club night, picnic and barbecue at the club rooms was enjoyed by members plus friends. A great turnout, lovely social evening outside with a great selection of salads and even desserts went down well for all. January, February, March and April club calendar is full. You won't be bored if you attend some of these events we have put on for you. Burma Rally and Vintage weekend, 22-26th of January, what a great turnout of people and cars. Friday night meet and greet with entrants, trustees, Main Street and our mayor Hamish went down well at the Grand Hotel. Saturday “Wheels on Victoria Ave”, was a full on day for me and family. 7 a.m. onwards parking of cars in the avenue, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. assembly of a 100 year old Model T Ford in half an hour and supplying a fire engine to Cook’s Gardens to celebrate part of Wanganui heritage, “The Fire Watchtower”, built in 1891, which is the last of its kind in New Zealand. A bright sunny day that saw the avenue packed with cars and people all day. Saturday evening Classic Cruise went off well thanks to Keith T and Peter H each for organising this and afterwards at the Grand was packed with members for a social evening and dinner. Sunday Burma Rally day saw mid-ninety cars come up to the start line, receive their instructions from grandchildren and flagged away by me, nice scenic roads and afternoon tea back at the club rooms. The venting in the kitchen got the tick of approval, no more sweaty women now. Good numbers that night saw people attend the dinner and prize-giving at the racecourse, overall winner Glenn Loveridge driving his 1936 Morris eight, (previously owned and rallied by his parents for many years), well done Glenn and navigators. Monday 7:45 all our family in attendance for Bruce’s Wellington Anniversary Day Run saw 50 plus cars assemble at the Corn Market for a leisurely drive around the outskirts of the city and end up at Karen and Graham Langridge’s “Rassmussen Rose Nursery” for late morning tea and to farewell to our visitors. Cars were stopped while passing along the rose garden beds and Karen and Graeme gave a talk on the process of growing roses on their 55 acre property. Continued
Overall the committee were well pleased with the weekend, a few adjustments for next year but there always will be. Frank J and Steve H, a big thank you and to all the committee, volunteers, marshalls, helpers (40 plus over the 4 days) and Principal sponsors the Clevelands. Rob Okeeffe has kindly made and installed an extension to the bench area in the kitchen, well done and thanks to Rob. A very nice article appeared in the local paper re female membership and ownership of Club vehicles they enjoy. Well done Sue V, Anne B, Dale W and Lee T The question was asked at the February Club night, “What was the result of the survey members were asked to reply to re the attendance or not to The Vero International” in 2022. Out of the 1328 responses, 639 have indicated that they plan to attend. Organisers are now proceeding with the 2022 rally. Results will be published in the Beaded Wheels due out now. Club Captain’s Report
Club Captain’s Report for February 2021 Hello to you all We started the new year with a well attended and thoroughly enjoyable Club BBQ and Picnic at the Clubrooms on Wednesday 13 January. Great to see so many members and friends along and thanks to the helpers with the BBQ and in the kitchen. Wellington Anniversary Weekend (Vintage Weekend in Wanganui) was celebrated with numerous events involving our Club and its members and once again we had fine sunny weather for the majority of the weekend. Thank you to everyone who participated in the weekend’s events and also to the people who helped in some way over the weekend – your efforts are much appreciated by all. See separate report on Sunday’s 24 January Burma Rally. February Club night held on Wednesday 3 February included a talk from Brian Deadman who amongst other things is the Chairman of the Men’s Support Group at our local branch of the Cancer Society in Whanganui. I hope you all enjoyed his interesting and informative talk.
The Blue Smoke and Pedals Event together with a Posh Picnic will be held on Sunday 14 February 2021 at Williams Domain which adjoins our Clubrooms in Patapu Street in Whanganui East - meet there by 1:30pm. Our Guest Speaker at the next Club night on Wednesday 3 March will be local historian Murray Crawford who I’m sure you will find very interesting – see you all along that evening. We will have a ‘Sunday Run’ on 21 March 2021 with Pat and Sandra Carrick planing a drive for us. Meet at the Clubrooms by 1 o’clock for a 1:30 pm departure and put something in the boot for afternoon tea. Happy Motoring

Burma Rally 2021 – 24 January 2021
This years Burma Rally had a field of some 94 vehicles with three motorcycles, a good number of commercial vehicles as well as a wide variety of ages and makes of Vintage Cars – a third of the entries were Post 1960 vehicles and most classes had entrants. We went out through Okoia with an early timed section to make everyone keep a close eye on their instructions as well as the speeds at which they were travelling. After passing through Turakina, Marton and Crofton we had another timed section travelling through Kakariki and Halcombe before arriving at Feilding. Everyone then drove onto Colyton for the lunch stop at the local Hall. The afternoon run took everyone through the lovely township of Fielding before taking in more country touring eventually coming back through Crofton with the final timed section commencing on Warrengate Road near Fordell and ending on the outskirts of Whanganui. After a drive through the main street of the River City the Rally ended at the VCC Clubrooms after travelling some 108 miles. Drivers and navigators then relaxed with a cup of a tea and took the opportunity to have look through our Club’s Parts Shed. The Dinner and Prizegiving on Sunday night was held in the Whanganui Room at the racecourse and it was a very enjoyable evening for the 140 people who attended. Congratulations to all class winners and to the overall winner Glen Loveridge of Taihape in his 1936 Morris 8 who had his brother Ian along as his navigator. Congratulations to everyone who participated in the Rally and I hope you all enjoyed it. Of course to run such an event many helpers are needed and thank you to all those people from our Rally Secretary and other Committee Members along with time keepers, result coordinators, marshalls, tail-end charlie and tea ladies – without all your help our Rally would not happen.

HIGHLAND FLING RALLY 2021 New Year’s Greetings & Update 28 January 2021 Good morning and Happy New Year to all you ‘laddies’ and ‘lassies.’ I trust everyone has enjoyed a fabulous break with their respective families and are now re-charged, and energised, and rearing to go despite that dreaded COVID looming upon us. ENTRY NUMBERS Folks we have well and truly now hit the 100 with the number of drivers who have registered to do the Highland Fling Rally! Unfortunate as it is, we must now bring the date for closure of entries forward two months to 31 January 2021 The accommodation and catering are now at their max for little old Taihape, with the number of people we will have descending upon their little country town. A few things I would like to bring to your attention please. 1) We are currently holding refunds for the following people and would like to return their monies if they do not intend entering this year. S WINTERBOTTOM, B WASHINGTON, A SHARP, T De LEEUW, T ANDREWS PLEASE NOTE – It is important that if you do want to enter, you fill in a new entry form, as there has been a price increase from the previous entry form for the Sunday evening meal. 2) The following people have paid but we are awaiting their entry forms please B TURNER, J WILSON, F POINTON 3) Some very keen members have sent in entry forms but are yet to pay. (PLEASE ADVISE ME ASAP IF OTHERWISE) G BISHOP, C MATHEWS, K KNIELSEN, D HURLEY 4) As well many folks seem to have overlooked the entry fee when filling out their entry forms, therefore not paid the $40.00. I am sure everyone has a copy of what they have sent us, could you please double check to make sure you have paid that Entry Fee.
MEDICAL HELP Another little shout-out please, if we have any doctors or nurses amongst the entrants, we would love to hear from you. We are hoping for an accident-free weekend of any sort, but we need to be prepared just in case someone busts a blood vessel from laughing too much. REGISTRATION & MERCHANDISE Registration will be from Friday evening 4 pm at the Gretna Hotel. For the many folks that have ordered ‘Fling’ apparel, your items will be in your Registration Packs and handed out on arrival. BRIEFINGS Organiser Alastair Jones will be doing his briefings 7.30 am on the Saturday and Sunday mornings outside the Gretna Hotel in Hautapu Street. REFUNDS Should anyone change their mind for whatever reason or have a change in circumstances, the final date for refunds will be 31 March 2021

RALLY RULES: This event is open to all financial members of the Vintage Car Club of N.Z. [V.C.C. of N.Z.]. All vehicle class categories eligible within the rules of the V.C.C. of N.Z. qualify for this event. To participate in this event, eligible vehicles must be owned and entered by a current financial member of the V.C.C of N.Z., and whom must be in the entered vehicle as Driver, or Navigator, or Passenger for the duration of the event. A minimum of three entries, excluding Veterans, will be required to constitute a class. If insufficient entries are received for any one class, those entries will be allocated to another suitable class. Electronic navigation aids are not to be used during this event.
