Chairmans Notes Greetings Everyone Restoration of the year, Club Night 2nd December, well what an entertaining and enjoyable night. The club rooms were packed with 75+ members in attendance with six motor cars and three bikes up for the top awards. Viewing was open til 7:45pm then the meeting took place. After the formal part each member was invited to talk about the restoration and the provenance of the vehicle which was most interesting. Paddy ODonell, 77 Isuzu, Scot Bullock, 66 Falcon, Bill James 73 Mini, Peter Croft 56 Mercedes 300, Graham Purves 30 Ford A, Shane Hobman 28 Chef, Bill James Norton M/C, Lloyd Williams Triumph M/C and Brett London Triumph M/C 1st Motor vehicle Scott Bullock, 1st Motor Cycle Lloyd Williams. All vehicles were excellent restorations and voting was very close. Well done to the winners and also the members who presented vehicles. A lot of work but very rewarding when finished, congratulations one and all. Items of interest went down well, trailers, car projects, dolls, tools instruments etc. with members speaking about them whilst the counting of the votes took place. The winner of the Christmas hamper was Aaron Kendrick. Combined branch picnic 22nd November at Woodville was reasonably well attended. Weather was not too chipper but 6 members turned up. You will all have your Beaded Wheels Mag. now. VCC management are requesting ALL members that are considering attending the 2022 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring to either phone or text your intentions of entering. Remember VCC need at least 10% of members to make this event viable. If management don’t get a good response it will be cancelled. 10% of our membership is 23 entries.
With our closest proximity to New Plymouth I would like to see considerably more than this from our branch. This is a once in a lifetime and may be our last international rally if not supported. Well worth the effort, do it today. Responses close Dec 22 2020. Dec 12th Christmas Parade. Assemble in Cook Street at 1pm. Club vehicles will be promoting the club and the Burma Rally/Vintage Weekend in January. Some decoration and period dress would be appropriate. Meet in the Grand after for a drink and a chat. New Year’s Day - Bull’s Run. Assemble 10:15, Bull’s Town Centre. Bring your lunch. New Year’s Day - Taihape Gum Boot Rally. (See ad in this magazine) January 13th Club night is our traditional picnic night which will be a noggin and a natter at the Club Rooms. 5:30pm onwards.Come along in your club vehicle with families, friends and grandchildren and enjoy this social evening. Bring preferred meats and a salad for the table (sausages, patties, some meat, beers and wine and nibbles will be supplied by the club. Burma Rally and Vintage Weekend January 22 - 25th. Planning is well underway. Get your entries in to Steve asap. For the Wellington Anniversary morning run on the Monday, assemble at the Cornmarket for a 9am start. An interesting run around the outskirts of the City with a late morning tea provided at a place of interest. All club members welcome, you don’t have to be a rally entrant. Branch members, a plate please for the morning tea and farewell to our visitors. To all members who work in the kitchen and do the catering for club events you will be pleased to read the new ventilation fan system has finally been installed at a cost of $2800. Hot days and evenings with 10 sweaty women working was just too much for me and the committee to bear. Every time I entered the kitchen I was pounced on (no not by 10 sweaty women) but by 10 grumbling women to do something. well jobs done. Hope it works. Tally Ho the Fox. Welcome to the 2021 inaugural Highland Fling Rally. The Rally organisers assure you of an enjoyable weekend of fun and excitement, as you motor and explore the ‘Highlands’ of Taihape in the Central North Island. Over the two days you will travel over a few sealed roads, numerous unsealed roads, and farm tracks which will test your motoring skills. You will also view some of the most spectacular countryside in the North Island. Rally Briefings on both days will be held outside the Gretna Hotel in Hautapu Street, Taihape.

Club Captain’s Report Hello to you all Thank you to Dale for organising the Ladies Run on Sunday 15 November 2020 - an interesting drive on a lovely fine sunny afternoon which included an enlightening Plant Nursery visit situated out in the country. Wendy and Craig Ryland showed their local knowledge and observation skills to get the most answers correct to be the days winners. Well done. It was however very disappointing to see such a low turnout of members for this event but those of us who came along had a very enjoyable afternoon. The Club working bee on Saturday morning of 21 November 2020 saw an enthusiastic group of Club Members attending including a number of our newer Members and some good work was completed on both the Grounds and in the Parts Shed. Thank you to everyone who came along and helped. December 2020 Club Night saw the Clubrooms filled to capacity for Restoration of the Year night and what a great night it was. Thank you to members for bringing along your restored vehicles with Scott Bullock taking the Car Trophy with his 1965 Ford Falcon and Lloyd Williams with his 1970 Triumph Tiger Motorcycle taking that Trophy. There was also some very interesting ‘treasured items’ on display with the explanation about many of them providing great amusement amongst members. Don’t forget the Christmas Parade to be held on Saturday 12 December 2020 – come along in your vintage car decorated for the occasion if you wish. Meet in Cook Street from 1 o’clock with the Parade set to begin at 2:00pm. Club Night for January 2021 will be on Wednesday 13 January 2021 and will be a BBQ picnic in the Clubrooms grounds – bring along your favourite foods and drinks and we’ll supply meat from the BBQ, buns and a few drinks. See you all there. Vintage Weekend is drawing near with the Burma Rally to be held on Sunday 24 January – please get your entries in as soon as you can. 2020 Restoration of the year. Car: Isuzu Gemini Owner: Paddy O'donnell This car was acquired as a race car it has been stripped out and Union Jack seats put in. Paddy tried really hard to get the bumpers smooth enough to be chromed, but in the end the car has black rubber bumpers‌ The car was a gift from Basil, who has passed away. Car: Mini Owner: Bill James
This Mini was a race car and had a hot 1300 in it. Bill had a major accident in it on the Brunswick Hill Climb one year and crushed the front corner. The car has been rebuilt without the race specs, Bill doesn’t race anymore. It was driven to the meeting by Heather - Bill and Heather are celebrating 25 years of marriage today. Car: 1930 Model A Owner: Graham Purvis The car is from Maine in the States and purchased in March 2019. . It was sold to Graham by a dealer as he nearly got caught in a scam and decided a dealer would be safer. It was described as having been restored by an amateur 10 years ago, and a going car. It was driven round the block in Whanganui after arrival then taken completely apart down to the chassis. All the bolts were either loose or missing and so it has had a ground up restoration.
Car: Mercedes 300 Owner: Peter and Angela Croft The car was imported to NZ from Australia where it had spent a lot of time in Queensland and had been slowly rotting away. Angela’s father had bought the car new from a German gentleman who had bought it in England. The car had one great story attached - the extremely tall German gentleman had been driving the car in London and ended up in a line of diplomatic cars that were waved into Buckingham Palace. Everyone else had stopped in the car park and let out a passenger, while this gentleman had none. A policeman came to see what was happening. Imagine a very imposing German man in Buckingham Palace not long after WW2, bribing a policeman £ 5 to open the gate and let him out… Work on the car has been done by Restorations Unlimited and is all original repaired parts. This was its first time out at night. It was missing a light surround which had fallen off due to the owner not screwing it on tightly enough, and then run over by the following car. A new surround was hundreds of euros, so Terry Price is doing his magic to repair the part - then it will be finished and complete! Car: 1965 Falcon Wagon Owner: Scott Bullock (Winner) This car was bought as a fairly tidy car - a 10 footer. It was well used and has toured the country. Then Scott had a shed fire and lost all his toys but this. When the fire department got there they sprayed this car with water and the windscreen exploded so it was very hot and ready to burn. The wagon has the original interior and a rebuilt engine. Its not a particularly fast car, but it is comfortable on the road. It was a bittersweet project, as there was so much loss from the fire.
Motorbike: B1970 Triumph Bonneville T120R Owner: Brett London Brett was also celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary as well as the birth of his first grandchild. 1970 was probably the best year for Triumph motorcycles before they moved to oil filled frames. This was a very recently finished restoration - at 6 tonight the holes were drilled and the number plate attached. Briain Thorley did the work on the motor. Cavin Molern did the painting. Dave from Wanganui Electroplaters did the chrome. Brett tries to buy local and keep local craftspeople in work. Motorcycle: Triumph 1970 Owner: Lloyd Williams (Winner) This was a TradeMe buy - the bike was originally imported by a Welshman living on Waiheke Island, and eventually sold to another man on Waiheke. The second owner stripped all the chrome off the bike, and painted the fuel tank with the traditional flames. The original speedo and odometer was removed and the bike painted black. Lloyd picked up the bike for an undisclosed sum and brought it to Whanganui. It has been completely stripped down. The engine had clogged bearings and gas leaked from under the head. It is now a restored very sweet ride with a balanced motor. This is a ‘sister’ bike to Brett’s with the major difference being that this has a single carbuettor while Brett’s has twin carbs.
Motorcycle: Norton 1974 Commando 850 Owner: Bill James This was Ray Purdies bike, bought from Colman Moter Cycles in Whanganui. It now has a new exhaust as well as other new parts. If the family borrow the bike, it takes Bill about 2 weeks to repair the damage…
Car: 1928 Chevrolet Roadster Owner: Shane Hobman Shane bought this car as a box of bits 23 years ago. Its been going several times, but Covid finally got it pulled down again and painted so it really is finished. Its not a perfect restoration as it is going to be driven at speed down gravel roads so is definitely going to get stone chips. One of the hardest parts was getting it registered again: it is only on the road because Shane had had the car for 23 years. It was originally assemble here, and some of the timber used was Southland Beech which is a soft wood and had rotted away.

2021 Taihape GUMBOOT RALLY Yes there will be a Gumboot Rally on 1 January 2021. The format will be the same as previous years. Start from the Taihape Domain gateway at the end of Tui Street - assemble from 9am First car away at 9.30am. There will be a raffle $10 per person, to fund the rally.Expect to cover the back country roads around Taihape. Lunch venue will be a picnic - please bring your own lunch and drinks. There will not be any petrol supplies once you leave Taihape at the start of the run. Unfortunately Robert Baines is unlikely to be able to attend the rally due to medical treatment , so the run is being organised by Neil Farrer and other members of the Wanganui VCC. For those who would like to stay overnight - a meal at the Gretna Hotel on 31 December is a great start - Please book with the Gretna Hotel. At the end of the rally there will be a barbecue tea at the same venue as last year. The missus said she's leaving me because I invade her privacy too often. At least that's what it says in her diary. My mate is thinking about asking his ex-missus to re-marry him, but he's worried she’ll think he is just after her for his money. As me and the missus headed off on a romantic holiday, we talked about what kinky things we'd like to do to each other. She said, "I've always wanted to be handcuffed." So I planted a kilo of cocaine in her suitcase.
My missus left a note on the fridge: "It's not working. I can't take it anymore, I'm going to live with my mum." I opened the fridge door, the light came on, the beer was cold. What the hell is she on about?"
Two guys in a health club, one is putting on a pair of women’s lace knickers. 1st guy: "Since when do you wear women's underwear?" 2nd guy: "Since the missus found ‘em in the glove box."
The missus isn't talking to me. She said I ruined her birthday. I'm not sure how...I didn't even know it was her birthday!
My missus left me for another bloke. All that lies ahead now is a miserable, pointless life, with suicide seemingly the only way out and while the poor bugger's going through all that, I'll be down at the pub with my mates every night!
CENTRAL HAWKES BAY - VETERAN RALLY - based at Woodville. In preparation I had tried to get the Rover (1914) ready on Tuesday but it would not start. So I asked Ian Chamberlain for help . Magneto off and pulled apart got spark, reassembled and installed and then we had to re-time the motor and that is not an easy task. However Ian worked his magic and the Van went better than before - so now I was ready for the adventure. From our Branch we were Neil Farrer - 1914 Rover Van and Ian & Faye Chamberlain - 1906 Reo. We gathered at the Ormond Street Motels on Friday afternoon - fortunately there was sufficient room for our Modern vehicles and trailers , together with our Veteran Cars. Remember all Veterans are over 100 years old so oil leaks can be a problem. There was a supply of cardboard for all of us to place under our vehicles which was excellent. Friday evening we met at a local eating house , just around the corner from the Motel, so we could participate in liquid refreshment. The establishment had been forewarned about our group coming - we were told to be there at 6pm and we were. Most got their meals within a reasonable time frame but at 8.15 there were four of us who had not received meals we had ordered at 6 to 6.15pm - so some loud noises were leveled at the kitchen staff It was A CLASSICAL STUFF-UP somehow they had lost our orders and thought that everyone was fed - we certainly stated that we have not been served. WE were given a complimentary drink while they hastily prepared our orders. The food was good finally. Saturday was windy but fine. I chose the long route , which worked out to be a little over 60 miles for the day. Veteran Rallies are not competitive and the routes chosen are suitable for these old bangers - most of whom motor along about 15 to 30 miles per hour. I was able to cruise along about 35 miles per hour in the Rover. Neville Gorrie came as my navigator, we were both well rugged up against the cold wind etc. Most of the cars had little protection for drivers or passengers so we were all suitably dressed. The route was nearly all sealed with gentle rise and falls. Braking is interesting in Veterans - and it happens slowly. However no problems with wandering stock or need to stop in hurry. We went northwards from Woodville , coming out at Oringi , crossing over State Highway and disappearing into the back and beyond. Our morning stop was at a Farm that has been in the same Family ownership since about 1885. But our interest was the 1914 Humber car that had been bought brand new in 1914 and had stayed with the family ever since. On the wall was the original Registration number H (for Hastings) 1053. Issued 1914. The car was in a pretty sad state , but everything was either in , on , or around the car. The motor was able to freely turn when cranked. It is the Family’s intention to restore the car to roadworthy state in the future. It is a rare event to locate the same family and farm with the original first motor vehicle , purchased prior to the first World War.
Lunch was at a small country hall - with sufficient room to park the 15 veterans etc alongside. Great for photo . During the afternoon, again more back country roads , to eventually come out at Mangatainoka ( not the Tui Brewery to visit) but Gleesons Truck display. A huge display of trucks, all ages and sizes, including three fire engines , and other related engines etc. We were joined at this stage by a Motor Bike Rally group . They were also interested in our Cars, as we were with the range of bikes being used Ariel Square 4’s, and other bikes ranging from the 1940’s to 1980. The evening meal was catered by a local group who turned on a lovely meal - bring your own wine etc. The four of us who had such a long wait on Friday evening were invited to go first - no argument about that !!. Sunday weather was not good - strong winds and rain. I had to use my windscreen wiper for the first time. IT WORKED. But being a split screen, water came up through the join and dribbled onto my legs etc. Joys of old cars. We visited Mr & Mrs Clive Boyden approx 15miles northwards,under the hills. Clive has been gathering , restoring , and creating a museum display for many years of Farm / Off Road bikes. There were over 100 bikes on show with a lot more stored away to be done. There was a lot of other material relevant to the bikes - all makes and other interesting items. For the weary there were 200 litre (44 gallon) drums that had been made into very comfortable seats - suitably painted and upholstered . I have spare drums and Ian Chamberlian now has the idea so we may see some in my shed and Ian’s workshop. We had to be back at the Woodville park for lunch and that was a bit of a rush in the end. A good gathering of vehicles and people from Manawatu, CHB branches and from Wanganui. including Bruce & Jenny Ardell, Ian Higgins, Mike Marshall and a couple of others. The weather improved so we could sit out on the lawns and chat. Very pleasant. Then about 2pm it was time to load up and drive back to Wanganui, over the saddle road home.
