Chairman Bruce’s notes Greetings Young and All, The March Club Night was another interesting evening with Heidi Armstrong speaking about hearing issues to a good turnout of members. (See Captain’s report) The Branch had the pleasure of hosting the North Island Club Captains week long tour for ther last day and their final dinner night. A number of local members including Tom Clouston in his 1906 Darracq met the tour, who had travelled from Palmerston North, at the Marton Museum and Historical Society carpark for lunch and a viewing of the society’s collecton of memorabilia and historical records. After this we traveled to members
Neville and Cheryl Rhodes’ homestead to view the building progress of this magnificent home. The cars, immaculate gardens,
homestead and furniture work by Neville and Cheryl was much admired by all. A credit to you both! Thanks for hosting us. VCC Wanganui members then escorted the tour participants back to their clubrooms where we were joined by more locals for afternoon tea and parts viewing. Members then prepared the clubrooms for the final dinner. What a great evening: drinks, dinner, speeches, awards (one guy had 3 women passengers for the week’s tour - can you imagine? Yes he got an award from the tour leaders), prizes, raffle and musical entertainment during the evening by Ann Berntsen on accordian, and her friends, to top the evening off. There were glowing reports from the tour entrants and management on the day. With so many people for dinner, the food tables, prizes and entertainment area, there was no room for locals to be invited to join the evening function. (A number of us ate in the kitchen as it was.) Our thanks to the Club Committee and members/ helpers. Well done! My Sunday run on 17 March was very well supported. It was a great day with good company. Meet after 8.45 am at the Coach House Museum, 121 South Street, Feilding for a tea / coffee before the Rally. The briefing will be at 9.15 am with the first car away at 9.30 am. The route does not include any unsealed roads. You don’t need to pack a picnic for this outing - the morning section of the Rally takes you to a café for lunch. Mileage for the morning section is approx. 75 miles (120 Kms). The afternoon section is approx. 30 miles (50 Kms). There will be no opportunity to purchase petrol during either the morning or afternoon sections of this rally (105 miles (170 Km) in total). There will be an opportunity to purchase petrol before heading home at the end of the afternoon section which finishes at a Café. Mileage back to Palm Nth after afternoon tea is approx. 30 miles (50 Kms).

VCC Executive Meeting – Wellington 23 March 2019 This meeting was not so well attended – a number of Branches were not represented, which is a pity as the Executive meeting determine the direction and policy of VCC and it is the role of the Management Committee to carry out those directions. Highlights from the many reports are: 50 Year awards - to date 331 have been nominated. And 60 Year awards to 34 members – quite an achievement. Membership total 8512. Wanganui Branch currently 216 members. Financial Reports. – The club is operating close to Budgets – no concerns. Club Captain – South Island - 209 registered for the Motor Cycle event, 182 for the Easter Rally so far. Visits continue to branches. There will be a National Veteran Rally in October How many from Wanganui will be planning for this out of our 10 Veterans. I hope to include this rally in the South Island Tour .I guess I will tow the Rover behind my Ute for the tour. Club Captain – North Island – The Club Captain Tour report included the splendid meal at Wanganui at the end of the tour. 35 Vehicles and up to 100 people – it was a success inspite of Karen not being able to go on her own tour – She spent some of the time in Hospital. There is a proposal for a North Island Irishman rally in 2020 – possibly based around Taihape and inland Hawkes Bay. Could be interesting – especially for those with Model A’s. Theme could be two days of motoring for pre 1931 Vehicles – with some “Off Road routes” Bunk style accommodation – roughing it . Possibly to be called “Highland Frolic 2020” – BOP Branch will host the inaugural rally. Beaded Wheels - No changes to Committee that runs it. But Kevin Clarkson did remind everyone that the higher quality photos are preferred. Some interesting photos do not reproduce well enough to print in the Mag. And please always supply details of people/cars etc in the photo. More stories are required – assistance can be given for those not good at writing. Committee are looking at “ON LINE” input so direct from your computer to the BW Committee. Did you know that there is available an electronic version covering all Beaded Wheels and Guff sheets through to NO 288 in 2007 – I have them on my computer and it is a terrific resource for research. I asked if there were any plans to produce another series from 289 to say 2018. More recent Beaded wheels are all retained in electronic format and it is an easier task to produce. Kevin said they could but there had not been a demand for this. If Members are interested I can ask that it be done. It is a lot easier storage on the computer rather than a number of cartons stacked in the corner – but I also do like to refer back to the actual copy at times. Speed Steward - Tony Haycock’s other role. The Targa Time Trial with VCC entries was a major event involving our VCC Members. Tony works with the Motorsport NZ Historic Commission to link efforts . Post 1960 Cars are currently under consideration for entry. Archivist - Don Muller visited Hawkes Bay and was impressed with their library and computerized library database. He intends to upgrade the VCC library database . (NB Dave Austin is working through our library – but mu ch needs to be done before we can consider
either a card system or Computer database - I think our Chairman would have some difficulty over this !!!. However our Archivist is able to offer advice and guidance to branches who want to upgrade their facilities. Insurance - This year Vero paid $36945 profit share to VCC, plus the commissions which are an important part of our Branch’s income. Registrar’s Report. To me this is always a most interesting session as Rob Brayshaw reports and a number of areas. VIC -Vehicle Identity cards now up to 11341. These are becoming more important to WOF testing and also enhances our stature with Govt and other motoring circles. To date there have been 979 non member applications for the VIC. First National Vintage Rally is proposed to run before the 2021 International festival in New Plymouth – at this stage no branch has offered to run it. NZTA – 12 month WOF’s continue to be raised – without success. Some members have had difficulty in getting a WOF for Vintage and Veteran vehicles as many testing stations do not have staff with sufficient knowledge to look at the Vehicles. We are very fortunate here in Wanganui. Unfortunately WOF’s are a commercial transaction so some testing stations have their own rules as to what vehicles they will look at. FIVA has produced a guide for Historic Motoring - some of this is likely to impact on NZ and our ability to drive our older vehicles at any time – anywhere. Fuel supplies may also become a problem in the future as more and more vehicles are produced on alternative fuels or electricity. Suitable Training for apprentices to work on “Historic Vehicles” is already a concern in many countries. Holland has reduced air pollution by 90% in the last 18 years – it is a major concern in Europe - But here in NZ we have been fortunate so far that the motor industry has not been directed to cut back on Diesel and Petrol vehicles. There is a growing awareness to preserve vehicles rather than restore them but world wide there are concerns over the use and preservation of our Historic Fleet. You and I can play our part in this by keeping our VCC Eligible vehicles up to scratch and in good condition. Apparently Caltex is one of the few Companies that do not have Ethanol in fuel currently. Fuel Companies can have up to 5% Ethanol content without any disclosure and many of our older vehicles cannot handle this mix , or a greater %. VCC Communications & Marketing – Posting to Facebook and Branch Magazines on the website is steadily rising – Statistics are impressive 345163 looking at the postings. Facebook has 1300 followers – I am not in that number as I do not se Facebook. Our Branch always gets a good report on our Facebook reports etc.VCC National Day - Cancer 2019 – last year 28 branches participated ( why not more ??) Nelson had organised raffles with Free Meals and Overnight stay in Golden Bay – Peter had reported on what we are doing and that we are proposing to commence “On Line registration” this year. Something that other branches had not considered. The involvement of other “one make” clubs was a feature of many Branches. Originally VCC Executive agreed to a three year period for the National Day - so what are we going to do in 2020 ?? This will be considered at the AGM in August. NZFOMC - New Zealand Federation of Motoring Club Inc. WOF concerns again a headache . The Audit systems supposed to be in place by NZTA were not working – which
resulted 20000 vehicles being re-inspected. A huge concern to all , including some historic vehicles owners. 12 month WOF still being sort. The revision of the Incorporated Societies Act 1908 is still in the pipeline – our VCC and others are concerned that any revisions will impact on our Branch constituitions. Third Party Insurance has been discussed but overseas countries that do have compulsory 3rd party have advised that it still poses a lot of serious issues – so nothing progressed. Some affiliated clubs do not have the liability Insurance that VCC has and they could not hold intended events so FOMC is looking to a similar cover with the costs being shared. VCC Rally 2021. The website is now working - have you looked ??. Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring - www.historicmotoring.co.nz or look it up in Facebook. – Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring 2021 For our Branch there is an opportunity to promote our Burma Rally for those on their way home after the 2021 event in New Plymouth. The last day at New Plymouth is Friday 22 January. The Burma is not a National Event so we are in the clear. However as many as possible should plan on attending the Rally 2021 – it could be that last international rally event held by VCC. Accommodation can be booked through the website now. The organising committee are asking for 10% of members to attend – for our Branch that is 22 Members with vehicles -surely we can do better than that. Motor Cycle 2021 Rally. The last Motor Cycle national event had 189 attendees – described as a “queer bunch” . However a letter was received requesting that the current rule of no other National Events in the year of an International Rally, – be considered and that Motor Cycle Organisers wished to hold a National M/C rally in 2021- Suggested that it would be later in the year. Lots of discussion on this one but in the end it was approved as the majority of those present agreed that in the last two international events less than 10 M/C had been registered. So they can do their own thing !!. Boundary Dispute - Horowhenua Branch would like to extend their southern Boundary to incorporate the whole of Kapiti District Council. Wellington Branch are very apposed to any changes. Members can of course belong to whichever Branch they prefer now regardless of where they live. This could be an interesting future discussion. Code of Conduct – By Law - this was approved to be considered at the AGM. Proposed Constitution - for all Branches had been circulated. In our case most of the clauses have already been added to our constitution so I was not concerned. Other Branches had serious problems with some of the optional clauses – however it is in draft form as there may be further changes made by the Incorporated Societies Review – yet to be finalised. I can provide a copy if any member wishes to read to document. AGM in August will be held in Greymouth so travel to and from may be difficult - some are considering the Christchurch – Greymouth Alpine Express as an additional feature of going to the AGM, but this would add another couple of days to the weekend, and may not be covered by VCC Travel expenses. The AGM will be at the Ashley Hotel in Greymouth.

For our Club Night last Wednesday we all enjoyed an interesting, entertaining and light-hearted presentation from Heidi Armstrong a Hearing Specialist who works in our ‘Fair City’. We all learnt plenty from Heidi and thanks to all our Club Members who allowed us to laugh at and with them as they participated freely in the presentation. A lovely evening and a very big thank you to Heidi for giving us great insight into the whole issue of ‘hearing’ and the help available. Come over to the Clubrooms on Saturday 13 April 2019 around 8:30am and have a look at the Motorcycles before they depart on the annual Castrol Motorcycle Trial – there is always a good variety of bikes to see – the first bike will leave the ‘Start Line’ at 9:30am. On Sunday 28 April 2019 Ian Chamberlain is going to take us on a Sunday Run and he has a ‘Special Place of Interest’ to go to so come along and enjoy the afternoon. Meet over at the Clubrooms at the usual time of 1:00pm for a 1:30pm leaving time. Bring something for afternoon tea and leave it at the Clubrooms before you go. Casual clothing is recommended as your no 1’s may not look too good after the afternoon’s excursions! Next Club Night is Wednesday 1 May and Andy Lin is going to be our Guest Speaker for the evening. Andy is an accomplished speaker and his presentation will be enlightening. We are trying to make entry to our events easier and the first trial is for the Annual Rally on the 2nd of June. Kaaren Smylie, Club Captain Northern Region Dear Bruce and members, A personal note of thanks to you all for hosting the entrants on my NICC Club Captains’ Tour. I have received such glowing reports from many of the entrants since their arrival home about what an incredible finale evening they all enjoyed. You truly went the extra mile to make people feel extremely comfortable and I thank you for that. The scrumptious meal you provided was of such a high standard, it left everyone thoroughly impressed. Last but not least you topped off the evening and entertained the group providing talented musicians who played and sang the old style music, fantastic, what a hit, they loved it! As you can imagine I was so disappointed not to be there with you all to enjoy the frivolities and fun, particularly after the many months I spent plotting and planning the Tour. BRUCE’S RUN
This months Run on Sunday 17 March 2019 was mainly around the City area with just a short trip out of the City limits to Westmere. Some 30 vehicles enjoyed the run on what was a very hot and sunny Sunday afternoon and one of the more interesting vehicles enjoying the run was Dick Mottram on his newly acquired Suzuki Boulevard Motorcycle which has been adapted to take two stabilising real wheels – an amazing machine which has only done 440km and can be changed quite easily back to a normal two wheel motorcycle if and when wanted.
A visit to Terry Price’s Restoration Workshop was very interesting and what a special Austin Van we saw – amazing what some people love. Isn’t it good we all have our own special love of particular vehicles – it makes life interesting and creates plenty of fun. Thank you Terry. The old Dalgety Woolstore in Bedford Avenue is certainly a ‘hide-away’ for some very interesting machinery together with many cars and motorcycles in ‘mixed condition’ - some drivable and others that will possibly never be mobile again. Thank you to Rick Dennison for the opportunity to see these treasures. Willy Pelzers joined our group at this visit in his newly acquired 1934 Ford Sedan Hotrod – a very impressive car that will draw plenty of attention from all Road Rodders around the Country.
The final visit for the afternoon was to Kevin Herdsman's property in Westmere to view his Ford Customline which is being beautifully restored – Kevin is making great progress and its arrival at our Club is eagerly awaited. An enjoyable afternoon tea was had back at the Clubrooms before we all headed home. Jennifer and I enjoyed organising the afternoon and
