Chairmans Notes Greetings everyone - Day-light savings has finished so more time in the shed doing those maintenance and servicing jobs on the car and attending to her or his indoors list of jobs. I’m aware of a number of restorations underway so look forward to seeing them out and about in the Spring. - March, the Riley Car Club held their National event in Wanganui this year and used the clubrooms for handing out rally packs, viewing the parts’ dept and having their Friday night dinner here. Thanks to Eilidth and family and all the helpers in making this a very enjoyable evening. Great comments about our clubrooms and friendly members. - Yes I managed a Friday morning away. I attended the annual field day at Manfield. Hardly anyone knew me so it was an enjoyable morning away. Manawatu Vintage Machinery Club always have an interesting display there. - Mr Farrer and I attended the March National Executive Meeting in Wellington. (Yes the same day as the Horowhenua swap meet) There will be a report in our next newsletter. - Easter Monday Jennifer and I had the pleasure of inviting Ross Glenny and Alan Bates (Patron) for morning tea and a guided tour through the parts’ dept and transport museums before we covered everything up for the Winter. (Easter on we are closed for Club visits until November). An enjoyable day, yes your turn is coming. - April club night, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Nice warm autumn evening, full clubrooms and our entertaining club speaker for the evening was Jim Norris who has a passion for photographing and tracking the migration and nesting of birds in NZ. Very entertaining and not a squeak out of anyone for an hour. His presentation and the quality of photos was a credit to him. Jim’s comments after the presentation was “What a wonderful, happy lot of interested club members to talk to.” Nice comments indeed. - Highland Fling in Taihape not far away now. In their pre 1931 vehicles will be gearing up for this event. Hopefully we will have a report for next month’s mag. - Annual Rally entry forms are now out and in the Rivet. Your club needs YOU We are rapidly approaching our AGM and as normal all positions are open to applications. We have three positions this year where the present incumbents have expressed a desire to retire.

we have an unwritten rule that 3 years is a fair stint for a chairman and Bruce has been in the position for four so he’s ready to be relieved. The chairman has the full committee and the whole of our membership to assist in keeping the club cogs well oiled, its a team leader’s position.
Club Captain, Probably the busiest position on the committee but again there is a wealth of experience within the club to help in bringing the newcomer up to speed. The most responsible section of a club captain’s duties is the setting, running and organising our two big rallies, the Burma and our Annual Rallies but also the monthly runs/activities are under his jurisdiction.
RIVET Editor. I have been producing the RIVET for quite a few years now and it’s time for a change. A new format and fresh ideas would breath a bit of life into the publication. I will be available to assist in the technical requirements as it is produced electronically. There is plenty of software out there to help publish club magazines so the scope is wide open.

Rally Regulations 1. This rally is open to vehicles as defined in the rules of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) 2. Eligible entrants must be current financial members of The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.), or overseas residents who are members of a recognised Antique Motoring Club. The entrant must be either the driver, rider, navigator, or passenger of the vehicle entered. Invited guests are deemed Non-Competitive and should not interfere with the competitive section of the rally. 3. Actions that may bring The Vintage Car Club of New Zealand (Inc.) into disrepute will incur disqualification. 4. Any entrant found using any electronic navigation device may be disqualified. 5. Any vehicle changes made after the closing date will see the entry moved to the non-competitive class. 6. We prefer that you carry a fire extinguisher in your vehicle. 7. Safety briefing: Entrants must attend the pre-rally briefing at 9.15am on Sunday 6th June 2021

We have received the following email with reference to American cars from the early 1900s. If you are interested please contact Jimi directly on the number below. I'm currently working on a film based out of Avalon studios in Wellington. I am the vehicle wrangler and am sourcing cars to use in the film. The movie is set in 1918 Texas, so we are looking for period correct cars of that era. They can be either left or right hand drive. Hoping to find cars to fill some street scenes, they may be parked in shot and/or may be driving through. Also on the wishlist are a period correct Ambulance and an Army troop carrying Truck. Model T Fords are great or anything American from that era. It will be shooting in the Whanganui area from late April. We are happy to pay a fair price for people to bring along cars for a day here and there or if you have a few club members together we could make a donation to the VCC, just whatever works best for everyone. Hello to you all Thanks to Pat and Sandra Carrick for organising the Sunday Run held 21 March 2021 that took us up the North Western side of the Whanganui River with a stop at the Bushy Park Homestead for afternoon tea – a very enjoyable run on the dusty roads with a good number of members attending. Our Guest Speaker at the April Club night was Jim Norris who gave a very interesting and enlightening talk on birds seen regularly in the Whanganui area. Thank you Jim. The River City Park-Up was held on Sunday 11 April 2021 and was a very enjoyable day in the grounds of City College with hundreds of vehicles being displayed including some 20 Vintage Car Club members vehicles. The Annual Motorcycle Trial will be held on Saturday 17 April – if you would like to come over to the Clubrooms to have a look the first motorcycles will be leaving at 9:30 am. The Club Run for May will be on Sunday 16 May 2021 with Shane and Noeline Hobman setting a interesting drive for us. Meet at the VCC Clubrooms by 1 o’clock for a 1:30 pm departure – bring some afternoon tea along to share. Happy motoring.
March Sunday run, courtesy of Pat & Sandra Carrick So call me "one eyed", or "biased", that's OK.. if you missed Sunday's club run from all the comments you missed a goodie.. We had 15 starters at the club rooms joined by late comer Keith Turner & Toni. (Who would have believed it?) After briefing from Pat we were distributed route sheets on leaving clubrooms. Across the bridge & up Somme Pde & continued on around the loop to Bushy Park Homestead. Lots of dust, lots of gravel. (Editors note to future run setters. See if you can simplify your instructions. This run had, • Take the third exit at the roundabout after Bruces bridge. • Stay on the road, straight out of town. • Take the next turn left. • Turn right at Bushy Park. Did anyone get lost?) Neil Farrer needed a little more water after sharing some with the road, Pat & Sandra needed some water on the fuel pump to remedy fuel vapour lock on the climb out of the valley, Lee & Karen Taylor needed to rescue the wind deflector from the driver's side before it disappeared into oblivion, James Whibley was not seen stalling, that any one knows of (needed to be at briefing to understand fully). Sietse & his brother needed a fuel top up, evidently an MGB won't do a month plus a rally on one tank of fuel. (Editors second note. Did anyone else have close calls with rather substantial suicidal goats leaping out in front of the vehicles? I very nearly cleaned up a couple. Mind you we did leave you all in a cloud of dust so you probably wouldn’t have seen them!)
We arrived at Bushy Park Homestead, some ate their own afternoon tea on the deck whilst others moved into the lounge & had Coffee/ tea for a modest price supplied by the Homestead... all in fine china.. well done Bushy Park Homestead.. We then all departed at various times for home…

You don’t need to pack a picnic lunch as route will take you to a Pub for lunch. Mileage for the route to afternoon tea stop is approx. 102 miles (165 Kms). There will be opportunity to purchase petrol on the route and lunch. Mileage back to Palm Nth after afternoon tea is approx. 36 miles (58 Kms).
