Greetings to all Wairarapa Members, It was good to see the sun again last Sunday as we raided trhe garages of two newer members – Brenden Odell and Ian Stewart. A big thank-you to both and also to Bobette Odell for the morning tea that she provided. It was good to see such a good turn-out for our AGM. Only a month ago, but it seems much longer. The Covid Lockdown has distorted our perception of this year, hasn’t it? I must apologise that I ommitted to thank JOHN CLARK for his time on committee – two years as Vice-Chair, two as Chair, two as Past Chair and one on committee (to my knowledge) His contribution and wise counsell has been much appreciated, not only by myself but also Willie James and others. We also thank Carolyn Coquhoun for stepping in and taking over when Beth moved to the Motor Cycle Committee and welcome Mike D’Alton in her place as Secretary. August is the month for the National AGM and Management Meeting. I shall be attending

as your Delegate, but I am taking Willie James and our new Secretary, Mike D’Alton as Observers. I am hoping that we will come back full of enthusiasm and ideas for our Branch. The AGM on Saturday morning is an interesting and informative occasion and I reccommend it to any member who would like to get a wider perspective on the VCC. We have in our Branch a small sub-committee who have been working on a Stategic Plan for the Branch. They have produced a draft which they will soon present to the membership for feedback so that it can be adopted later in the year. Please think about how you would like trhe Branch to continue into the future, the sort of events you would like to see and the activities that you prefer and then LET US KNOW so that they can be incorporated into the plan. Similarly, if there is any part of the suggested plan that you disagree with, let us know that as well. I think that’s enough from me this month! The Gravel Challenge has been run and was won by Francis Pointon - so look forward to next year. This years Gravel Challenge was an interesting run on back country roads, well done Ian lambess. Your committee has had its first meeting since the A.G.M.some interesting topics were discussed. Kevin's Garage Raid was held last Sunday, another success with great weather. i seen some trees with blossoms on today, so does that mean we have turned the corner and spring is on the way? – Hugh Hunter
Gravel Challenge History almost repeated itself, in reverse, when the Wairarapa branch of the Vintage Car Club went gravel-bashing in the Gravel CHallenge on July 12th . The challenge is to match the organiser's odometer reading after a lengthy drive on metalled roads. Last year organiser Francis Pointon, set a target that was exactly matched by Ian Lambess. That earned Ian the task of setting this year's run, in which Francis travelled 28.6 miles to Ian's 29. Conditions were unpleasant with steady rain all day, and as a result only 10 cars turned out, all of them needing a good wash-down awards. – Kevin Ball

Kevin's Garage Raids Two garage raids provided a lot of interest for a host of club members on July 26. We counted around 30 people and about 20 vehicles for the first of these outings since the Covid restrictions ended. Toss in brilliant sunshine and dry underfoot conditions and the day was considered a success. First stop was to Bernard Odell’s collection of little DKWs. Bernard has encyclopaedic knowledge of the little three-cylinder cars and he gave a fascinating talk about them and their heritage. According to Wikipedia, DKW (Dampf-Kraft-Wagen, English: "steampowered car"), also Deutsche Kinder-Wagen (English: "German kids' car"). Das-KleineWunder, (English: "the little wonder") or Des-Knaben-Wunsch, (English: "the boy's wish"-from when the company built toy two-stroke engines) is a German car and motorcycle marque. DKW was one of the four companies that formed Auto Union in 1932 and is hence an ancestor of the modern day Audi company. In 1916, Danish engineer Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen founded a factory in Zschopau, Saxony, Germany, to produce steam fittings. That year he attempted to produce a steamdriven car, called the DKW. Although unsuccessful, he made a two-stroke toy engine in 1919, called Des Knaben Wunsch – "the boy's wish". He put a slightly modified version of this engine into a motorcycle and called it Das Kleine Wunder – "the little wonder" the

initials from this becoming the DKW brand: by the late 1920s, DKW was the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer. In September 1924, DKW bought Slaby-Beringer , saving them from Germany's hyperinflation economic crisis. Rudolf Slaby became chief engineer at DKW. In 1932, DKW merged with Audi, Horch and Wanderer to form Auto Union. After World War II, DKW moved to West Germany. Auto Union came under Daimler-Benz ownership in 1957 and was purchased by the Volkswagen Group in 1964. The last German-built DKW car was the F102, which ceased production in 1966. Its successor, the four-stroke F103, was marketed under the Audi brand. DKW-badged cars continued to be built under licence in Brazil and Argentina until 1967 and 1969 respectively. Second visit was to Ian Stewart’s farm property at Longbush, where all manner of treasures were found. When I first visited Ian, 20 or more years ago, he had something like 17 Bedford vans lining the driveway. One went off for restoration, accompanied by a parts vehicle, and a falling tree dealt to some but 12 carcases, which Ian referred to as the “bloody Bedfords” remain on the farm. There’s also some souvenirs of his long sojourn in the United States, where he drove trucks and tractors. They include a 1981/82 Corvette, an original 1947 straight-six Chevrolet coupe, and a caravan which he hauled 6500 miles around the US behind a Buick convertible. We must get him to speak at a club night. A very busy life. Upcoming Rallies and Events
Leaving from Martinbough Registration from 9 am. $10 per car, all funds raised goes to Wairarapa Cancer Society. Travel towards Masterton for a finish at Farriers for lunch. Bring your own or eat at Farriers. With the registation form there will be a chance to vote for the best turned out car. This will happen at the Farriers. The run is open to any cars, vans, trucks from any person or club.
Sunday September 13th Peter Smith Memorial Rally Organiser Graham Hodder advises this will be a two stage rally, each about 100kms long. It will start with a morning competitive run, followed by an afternoon touring stage. More details to come
