Chairman’s chatters Well what have I been doing ? I attended the Anzac MG car clubs luncheon at the Clareville bakery followed by a Concours judging of their cars at our clubrooms. Thirty-nine people all up and they were impressed with our clubrooms. Comments were made about the stairs! Perhaps we should be looking at putting a lift or elevator in!! For newer members the annual Peter Chisholm Rally is held in November. This involves a 2-3 day or longer run staying in motels etc anywhere in the country with the aim of seeing who can get the best mileage from their vehicles. Its a chance to get to know fellow members and have an enjoyable time together. Beth and Neville Taylor have organised the last few runs thank you but will be away for this years event so we are looking for a new organiser to put this together. Please contact our Secretary if you would like to have a go. Newsletter At our monthly committee meeting after five years of discussion your committee voted unanimously to send out our monthly Zenith magazine electronically via email. For those of you who don't have a computer a newsletter will be posted advising of upcoming events etc. Our Zenith is also on our branch website www.sporty.co.nz/wairarapavcc

You will also have to add our club email address to your contacts list otherwise the Zenith will end up in your Junk mail. Fine tuning will take sometime to get every thing right so "beer" with us as updates appear during the year. I might add that all photos will be in colour which is fantastic. As my two year stint as chairman comes to a close this will be my final report so I hope you have all enjoyed my ramblings and wish the incoming committee all the best for the coming year.

Club Captains Report (My last report) The Motor Cycle Reliability run was a great success from all reports – hopefully a write up in the mag. Some of you will know what BSA stands for...............apparently quite apt after 300 miles in the saddle! A good turnout for May Club night where we heard some great reports of Rallies outside our area. Tony & Myrna Lane on the South Island Easter Rally, Paul Furkert on the Land Rover Rally, and Willie James and Neville Taylor on the National Motorcycle Rally around the Nelson area. The Garage raid organised by Simon O’Hara saw another good turnout, visiting Richard Wilton’s Collection and Magoo’s workshop plus Lloyds private collection at his home. Amazing what people have tucked away. You will have read Paul Furkert’s letter in the last magazine. Your Committee run events for our own members – outside entrants are a bonus. If you gauge the success on the number of participants, 8
this year the Coastal run wins. The Stretch Gymkhana fails miserably. The Rex Porter Rally is our main event, but this year the date clashed with many other local events so unfortunately attendance was down. More promotion before next year may bring numbers up again. My final task is to select our best club member before the AGM. I’m working on that now.

Office Holder’s Duties Chairperson • Chair monthly or special meetings. • Work with Committee on matters arising from the meetings. • Welcome members, new members and guests on club nights. • Announce events and branch news. Club Captain • Check route instructions prior to any rally/event being run. • Provide assistance to rally/event organisers if and when required. • Keep the committee informed of progress with organisation of rallys/events. Treasurer • Keep the financial records of the branch. • Keep the committee informed of the financial position of the branch. • Produce a cash report for each meeting for the committee members. • Prepare annual accounts. • Liase with the accountant/auditor. Write and publish the quarterly branch report for the Beaded Wheels magazine.

Put out and put away ropes on club nights and rallies/events. Perform or supervise all the repairs and maintenance of the club rooms. Organise the cleaning of windows and carpets as and when needed. Garage Raid Saturday 11th May With a fresh but sunny start to the day, we met at the clubrooms. A cuppa and a bit of socialising preceded the start of the garage raid drive. Leaving the clubrooms we headed to Masterton via the west side, zig-zagging our way to our first destination in Villa Street. Proud owner of some fine machinery, Richard Wilton made us welcome at his rather large shed. Including a couple of his son in-laws cars, a step through motor bike and his fine cars. Second leg of the drive took us to “Magoos” hot rod and restoration shop and workshop. An introduction by owner Lloyd Wilson in the shop, gave us an insight into the beginnings of the company and his illustrious career based on his passion for all things hotrod and car related. A guided tour through the various stages of construction, fabrication and finishing of customer cars was an eye opener for us all. A great place to get parts and repairs / finishing touches to your vintage or classic car. The final stop was out to Lloyds place, where we were privileged to walk around the “Busted Knuckle” garage set up and his mock up 50’s Diner. A great collection of memorabilia, both local and imported. Thanks go to Lloyd and Richard for making us more than welcome at our stops. I trust all that went enjoyed the day.

Daffodil Rally for Cancer Sunday August 25th 2019 The second annual National Day, the 2018 Daffodil Rally for Cancer was a huge success providing a rise in profile for our Club and also raising over $60,000 for local Cancer Societies all around the country. We will be pulling out all the stops this year so mark your diaries now – Sunday 25 August 2019 –
See you there. The rally will follow the same route as last year starting at Martinborough and calling in at Greytown, Carterton and ending in Masterton.

May 4/5th 2019 Motorcycle Reliability Trial Report Graeme Reilly (BSA club) and I left Masterton for the club rooms on time and managed to turn up at the designated time of 8:30 a.m. so that was an unusually good start for us. Within minutes the usual friendly banter with our fellow bikers started. My BSA B31 special was mentioned by Willie James in last month’s Zenith as winning an award for “most desirable bike” at its last outing, so I was obviously going to get a fair bit of stick for this, along the lines “was the judge blind/bribed/ incompetent/all 3 etc”. All good stuff. I packed my route instructions away and arranged to follow Dave Henwood. This meant I did not have to do the usual thing of amateurishly bungying the instructions to the petrol tank, like us non-organized bikers do. Dave is generally conscientious at stopping at junctions to ensure his followers don’t get lost, but note the use of the word “generally” (more on that later). We set off (around a dozen bikes) more or less on time at 9 am, with the Tui brewery as the first stop, an excellent choice which we were all looking forward to. Rumours were that there would be a Tui girl behind the bar? At one stage I inadvertently ended up following Graham Reidy instead of Dave, this was a mistake as literally 5 minutes later we were “off piste” and doing a U turn. According to Graeme “someone” at the council had moved the road since he was last in the area, but I’m not convinced, and suspect Graeme was day dreaming of buying another Triumph or trying to work out where to get Avgas (those who know Graeme will not be surprised at this). Despite Grahams’ detour we arrived at the brewery on schedule around 11, which for me at least was a bit early for a beer, however, I was behind Jim Phelps in the queue at the bar and he ordered one so to avoid the inevitable “coffee is for wimps” type comments those behind him in the queue followed suit. I’m sad to report no Tui girls were on duty. Next stop was the Cheltenham pub for lunch (and more beer). We eventually left the pub extremely full of roast beef and veg with all the trimmings and started on our way to Sixtus Lodge near Apiti. This part of the ride is where my inexperience in riding on gravel roads showed up. Dave was a fair bit faster than me on the gravel sections and disappeared out of my sight, the result of which was me missing a turning and being rescued after a few miles of being off route by (surprisingly) 18
Graham Reidy, who no doubt was trying to make up for his previous navigational error, either that or he was lost and “off piste” again and not admitting it. All this explains the use of the word “generally” above (Dave). Another result of me missing turnings, and being slower on gravel than Dave, was me being on my own riding along the last 5 miles of gravel leading up to the lodge. Dave no doubt thought how could I get lost at that stage but he was wrong....for me the distance was more like 9 miles as I missed the entrance to the lodge and paid a visit to the car park at the very end of the gravel road. This caused much mirth when I did finally arrive at the lodge as my so-called biker mates reckoned (with all their engines stopped) that they could hear me travelling way up into the valley, and they were having great fun standing around speculating how long it would be before they would hear me stop, and turn back. After the various recriminations there was another excellent roast meal, a very entertaining quiz that Barry Wells just managed to keep under control (despite numerous protests and attempts to cheat), copious drinks, and a late night followed by the inevitably interrupted sleep (there’s always some in the bunk room who snores). I was lucky as my ear plugs were effective except for one particularly loud culprit, who shall not be named but is, surprisingly, married. Ear plugs are one of the first things I pack away on biking weekends. Sunday turned out to be another excellent day weather wise. I had received copious advice the night before on riding on gravel roads, notably most advising “just go faster” but I could not get the official advice of “the faster you go, the bigger the mess” out of mind...... I must have sped up a bit as I had Graham Reidy constantly in my mirror for one long gravel section on the way home, whereas he would normally sneak up and overtake me at warp speed, when it was most likely to give me a good fright and cover me with dust. The truly amazing Willis (not yet 92 as someone thought...) had a “gravel moment” shortly after leaving the lodge, we won’t call it a crash as he managed to come to a stop before slowly tipping off. He was fine, as was his bike. Graeme Reilly inevitably broke down on his BSA A65 (he has a “history” of DNFs on BSA rallies). This time he avoided the embarrassment of being loaded onto the support vehicle and managed to get his bike going again. All this did not delay our arrival at the pub toooo much, as we were (of course) riding to another pub for lunch, this time in Pongoroa. After leaving the pub we rode home down the great biking road, SH52. 19
This was a laughter filled weekend with great food, lots of riding on challenging roads, and in the company of sensible and experienced riders, who also like a good belly laugh. I thoroughly recommend this annual event, especially to the Wairarapa VCC bikers. Can we get more of you to attend next year? I think the format of a single night away in budget accommodation and 2 days riding is just right, and we are lucky to have this event in the Wairarapa VCC calendar. This was my 3rd trial and they just seem to get better. My thanks to the organizers (notably Barry Wells) and all the helpers, you did a great job. Simon Byrne
