Greetings to all Wairarapa Members, What a welcome change to Level One of Covid Alert! We had a very enjoyable celebratory run on Saturday (to get more exposure to the public) which has resulted in at least two membership enquiries. The Committee met Tuesday June and decided that it was safe to hold our AGM face-toface instead of remotely, thus saving the Club the expense of time, effort and postage which a remote meeting would have entailed. Instead, we have decided to use our July Club Night for the AGM and we will be able to kick-start our year only a month later than usual.

At the AGM we will be saying thank-you to Kevin Ball for a year of Club Captaincy. Kevin has several reasons for stepping down, not least that he misses competing in the rallies! Fortunately for us though, he is prepared to continue on the committee and as Scribe (aka publicity and Beaded Wheels contributor) Also leaving the committee this year is Carolyn Colquhoun who has looked after the secretarial duties since November when Beth moved over to look after the National Motorbike Rally that we are hosting in March next year. So, we are looking for a Club Captain and a Club Secretary for this coming year. Neither role is gender-specific and there is heaps of support around. I took on Secretary when I had been a member for only six months, so please, if you would like to volunteer, don’t hold back. We have a small sub-committee working on a Strategic Plan for the future of the Branch just as the National body are doing. They will be consulting with club members over the coming months. Do let us (the committee members) know what activities you would like to see, ideas for Club Nights, talents/expertise that you would be prepared to share. Don’t hold back either from joining us on some or all of the several activities that we have planned over the next three months. After losing three months to Lockdown, we are fired up to go! Happy motoring, - Tina Goodin Club Captains Report Just when we thought we were over Covid-19 the second wave engulfs us. Hopefully it won’t be as devastating as the first one, but disruption to our club activities is likely to be felt for some time. That said, I have organised a run for July 26 – a series of garage raids, that I think members will enjoy. It is all in Masterton and involves cars ranging in engine capacity from 1 litre to 7.5 litres, so there should be something for everyone. Access to the rooms via a lengthy ramp or two flights of stairs has been a deterrent for some of our older – and most valuable – members. The subcommittee looking at the future direction of the branch is looking at this issue, with a view to providing some sort of lift to get around this issue. Some sort of water-driven mechanism is one option. More on this later. A working bee has spruced-up the clubrooms, ready for spring.Thank you to all who participated. Finally, this will be my last report, for two reasons. The first is my declining health, which saw me take a headfirst dive onto a concrete floor during preparations for the Wolseley

visit. The second is that I miss participating in rallies. As Club Captain one of my duties is driving in advance the course of each new rally. I’m happy to do that, but I miss the camaraderie of the competition, so it’s time to hand over the reins. – Kevin Ball

The number plate says it all. The car is a top-of-the-line 1959 Oldsmobile 98, owned by Brad and Rachel Gooding, of Masterton, and it was on hand when the Wairarapa branch of the Vintage Car Club celebrated the end of Covid-19 restrictions with a run on Saturday 13th June. With them in the photo are Charlotte, 17, (with Dad) and Jess, 19, and Walter, 16, with Rachel. The run, organised by Hugh Hunter, took 24 cars from the Clareville clubrooms to Masterton, then to Martinborough (for a picnic lunch), Featherston, Greytown and

Carterton, in each case running up the main street, “to show them the club is still alive”, Hugh said at the briefing. The non-competitive follow-the-leader tour was an icebreaker after three months of Covid 19 shutdown. According to Wikipedia, since this model, the sixth generation was the top-line Oldsmobile, the series had the most technologically advanced items available, such as the Hydramatic automatic transmission, the Autronic Eye, an automatic headlight dimmer, and Twilight Sentinel (a feature that automatically turned the headlights on and off via a timer, and the highest-grade interior and exterior trim. All-up weight is two tonnes and the moving force is a 6.5 litre V8, the largest Rocket model engine used from 1959 until 1964. Standard equipment included oil filter, turn signals, air scoop brakes, Safety spectrum speedometer, rocker panel mouldings, special emblems, parking brake light, sponge vinyl headliner, deep twist carpeting, electric clock, wheel trim mouldings, power steering and power brakes. Interiors were selected from leather, Morocceen vinyl, or cloth in different colours. Standard tire size was 9 in × 14 in (229 mm × 356 mm) – Kevin Ball
