Editor’s Snippet This is my last Venture. I know I have written this farewell in the past and ended up having to pick up the baton (or pen) once again.

At this moment in time the club has not got a replacement for the position of Venture Editor. If you think you have what it takes to be an Editor (and it doesn’t take much) then contact Heather (Club Secretary) and she will take it from there. It may seem a daunting task but it is not. There is no way the club would throw you into the deep end. I will be available to assist the new Editor in finding his or her feet. Be prepared though. Over the years that I have been doing this job I have had a bit of ’ribbing’ in regards to some of the misspelt words (bloody predictive spelling), jokes, wrong dates etc. My most recent error was last months advert for the Double 50 rally in the Venture. It said you would travel down some lovely scenic roots, OOPS!! I’m sorry, but I can’t help to see the funny side of the error. I wonder if the Waikato has any of those roads eh?? As you glance through the magazine you will see that I have removed the Out of Town Events Page. Covid has made it impossible to keep up with cancellations and date changes so I have deleted it for now. The next Editor may elect to resurrect it?

Ch a irm a n ’s Ch a tter Chairman’s Annual Report June At the last AGM Graham Pate retired as Chairman. On election night there were no nominations for Chairman. A few discussions and phone calls were made and I was coerced into taking on the Chairman’s role. This was ratified at the incoming Committee. I thank the Committee for their patience as I found my feet. I consider the Chairman’s role to be pivotal in the Clubs further development. It is something that I have endeavoured to do to the best of my ability. I thank all those people who have helped keep the Club on an even keel through this year and moving forward. As a result of my taking up the Chairman’s role no one has put their hand up to take on Club Captains role. I would like to personally acknowledge the tireless work of Gillian (Treasurer) and Heather (Secretary), without their input we would have nothing. I wish to thank the Committee for their input and drive to make things happen in a difficult year with many events having to be cancelled due to Covid. This has impacted on Club nights, Club events, fund raisers such as the Daffodil Day Cancer run and our Swap meet. We are continuing to organise events for our Members with careful consideration for their health and welfare. Although Member attendance has been subdued by Covid. I am hopeful that we are starting to emerge from the grasps of Covid. The Club financial position is strong although income is down on our investments and parts sales. We continue to be able to provide Members with the usual services that they have come to expect if by a slightly different method, such as a hard copy of the Venture magazine. This has been disrupted by the year of Covid and disruption of the Editor position. Hugh was again approached to take up the reins for this to get us through the year. Heather was able to Email these as a temporary measure, thanks to both of you. It is hoped that we can have the vacant Editor position filled at our AGM and normal transmition will resume. On the AGM topic there are several not seeking re-election, my thanks go to Graham Pate, Hugh and Bronya McInally. All of these Folk have given a great deal to the Club as have others. Thank you. This year has seen the completion of the Workshop project. We now have a great facility for our members who wish to carry out maintenance work on their cars. The Club has been fortunate to be bequeathed many tools that I am sure will be very useful to members. In January this year the Vero International Rally of Historic Motoring. Many of our members took part in this great event, a week-long celebration of motoring. This event just snuck in before the Country went into lockdown. Well done to Greg, Gaynor and their Committee for a memorable event. To all members I wish you well for the coming year ahead and I hope that we can operate without being overly affected by Covid. See you all at a Club event soon.

S e c r e t a r y Secretary’s Report June

Where has the last 19 months gone. Not sure ex-

actly, but we do get some time to ride our E bikes and enjoy the local bike trails around the Waikato, enjoying grandchildren’s sleep overs, family visits and friends. Graham working full time keeps him busy and manages time in his workshop to tinker with the old cars. At the 2020 AGM Jan Dearlove asked me if I was interested in taking the position of Secretary. I wasn’t sure that I could fill Jan’s shoes, Jan believed that I could do the job, I duly accepted this position. My decision to retire in December 2020 from my job as Project Manager at Golden Homes enabled me to accept the position of Secretary not knowing anything about being a Vintage Car Club Secretary. Des and Val Harvey members at the time said to me, “You can do this Boskin” VVCC Committee at the time voted me in as your Secretary at the October 2020 committee meeting. Since then, I have learnt so much, still learning, meeting members at different events, entering Rallies, having fun which is what I like to enjoy. Asking for help from members who do know and are prepared to help me has made my job a lot more enjoyable along the way. Your club has a lot of very interesting members who put their heart and soul into the club. Unfortunately, these members won’t be around forever, we need to learn from their knowledge and help in all areas of the club. Having been on Committee’s and raising funds for 48 years, even helped Waikato BMX with the NZ BMX Nationals in Hamilton this year (grandson belongs and became No 6 in NZ) I find meeting different people exciting and who are prepared to help in more ways than one. With the AGM fast approaching (8th June) all positions are available for nominations, I would like all of our members to give this some consideration and think about helping their club in areas to make things a lot easier and lighten the load of few of your club members who go over and above. I understand from listening to many of our members over the last 6 months regarding positions in the Waikato VCC “we have been there and done that”. Your current Waikato Branch Committee would appreciate your help and look forward to seeing our members at the AGM on the 8th June. I would like to hear from our members what they would like to see, we have had speakers, social gatherings, movies on Club night, perhaps a pot luck dinner, we would really like to hear back from you. At present there are mid -week and weekend Car and Motorcycle Runs. Rallies for the different years of vehicles, major rallies with our Annual Double 50 on the 11th June 5

Members have told me that there was only the VVCC club back then for members to join with their old cars. Since then, there is every other individual car club now that you can join which a lot of our members belong to as well. When I refer to “your club” it is everyone’s club and lets all be a team and keep your club running. Thank you to all of our members who plot rallies, organise food, check routes, work behind the scenes as no club can be successful without the support of every one of you in one way or another. Don’t forget we have great facilities and grounds available for hire, motorhomes & caravans have stayed in the past, sport clubs especially rowers for the Maadi cup. M o to r c y c le Motorcycle Report June I have received letters and emails thanking everyone for a great Mooloo and commenting on, how do we always manage to find such great roads. Our run in May was on Sunday the 22nd, We visited Lawrence Day’s home and his collection of bikes, report in the July Venture.

For our mid winter run on Sunday the 24 July we will be visiting Avspecs Ltd at Ardmore Airfield. They are specialists in all aspects of Warbird and Vintage Aircraft restoration and repairs. We will travel there be using the same format as we did last year, in that we will carpool (driver donation appreciated) The club rooms will be opened at 10.00 for those wishing to carpool in the Cambridge area leaving at 10.30, stopping at Hampton Downs Race Track for lunch, others wishing to come can meet us there at about 11.30. We would then leave at about 12.45 for our visit to Avspecs at Ardmore. If you would like to know more about this visit please give me a call, Avspecs have a very good web site. Annual General Meeting 8th June Evening Program The evening will consist of presenting three members with their 50 year badges and two members with their 35 year badges. The long term membership badges will be presented by the VCC National President Dianne Quarry. Kelvin Mitchell will be presented with the new Mooloo Meander trophy Indian Bike by Rex Cotter. Appointment of committee members will then proceed followed by a pot luck supper. If you want to bring along a supper plate I’m sure it will be much appreciated by all that attend. The Waikato Branch announces formation of an Early Eras motoring group

Venturers Report - June The Waikato Branch Vintage Venture rally held in mid-May produced a good mix of early era vehicles (as well as one or two more modern replacements), to start the run from the Forever Bound Café at Tamahere. Although the weather wasn’t too much to write home about, the spirit of the participants more than made up for the rather damp beginnings. Feedback was that the run was scenic despite low cloud and the route enjoyable. It’s always pleasing for an organiser when those that mislay themselves manage to get back on track again and successfully join in the social side of things. Elsewhere in these pages you should learn of some of the day’s experiences and outcomes more eloquently told. Congratulations to the participants and the prizewinners, with grateful thanks to all those who helped in putting on this annual event. It's not long now to when there is another opportunity to motor your vintage treasure with the club when the Double Fifty is held on the second weekend in June. Not at the usual Queen’s Birthday weekend this year, so make sure you get your entry in well before the end of May closing date. Then in early July, on Sunday the 3rd in fact, we will have another of our mid-winter tour runs leaving from the clubrooms at 10.30am (by more modern car-pooling means for those that wish), to inspect a couple of venues in the Rotorua area that you should find most interesting. Caffeine & Gasoline is Hampton Down’s very own car and bike show! It takes place on the last Sunday of each month in the top carpark, adjacent to Aoraki Coffee Roasters Café. It’s a meet up for enthusiasts, their families and of course the all important vehicle in their life! Caffeine & Gasoline can be described as automotive eye candy, where all types of vehicles are on display, from bikes to hot rods to muscle cars to classics to Vintage to supercars. It’s a great morning for spectators and owners alike. There is plenty of parking so bring the family, grab a coffee and/or meal from Aoraki Coffee Roasters Café and check out the range of awesome vehicles on display I know it looks like I’m pushing someone else’s barrow but we recently gathered at the Hampton Downs café for a family birthday celebration and it happen to coincide with the Café & Gasoline Day. What a great show!! I must admit, I was surprised to see no club members and their cars? A great morning seemed to be held by all who attended. Give it some thought, if you are at a loose end as to where to go for coffee on the last Sunday of the month? ED

FURTHER TO THE ETHONOL FUEL DEBATE Ethanol fuels are not new, but recent legislation targeting high-fuel prices has brought the biofuel back to the forefront of the conversation. What is this change and how will you be affected? It’s pretty simple: Tuesday’s announcement is merely an extension of a practice already in place seasonally. The announcement made by President Biden earlier this week will temporarily allow the sale of E15-blend gasoline through the summer months, a time

period in which it is typically banned. This cuts the amount of fossil fuels in each tank by raising the ethanol content of each gallon sold from the typical 10 percent to 15. Ideally, wider availability of a more ethanol-rich fuel will insulate consumers (and their wallets) from high oil prices and supply-chain issues. Can your car safely sip this new cocktail? A 5 percent increase in ethanol content is not anything over which most drivers should worry, as the vast majority of vehicles produced after 2001 are E15-tolerant. E15’s compatibil12

ity with most 21st-century engines traces back to its first implementations in 2012 across a handful of midwestern states. The Environmental Protection Agency has previously been leery of approving E15 fuels for summer use due to the evaporation during warmer temperatures, which can lead to smog; hence why, in 2022, the wider availability of E15 expires this fall. For classic car owners, E15 fuels are best avoided due to increased likelihood of corrosion from the ethanol content and probable system incompatibilities. For instance, traditional, rubber fuel lines are known to degrade faster with ethanol-blended fuels, which also result in increased deposits if fuel evaporates inside components like fuel pumps and carburetors. Another issue, which applies to any vehicle running on E15, is the relative energy density of ethanol blends. Ethanol releases less energy when burned compared to gasoline. The 5 percent increase in ethanol content will cause fuel economy to dip, but the change would be about the same as a small change in driving style or variance in weather conditions (such as a light headwind). Studies have proven this decrease to be in the single digits: 3 to 4 percent fewer mpg when running on E10 rather than 100 percent gas, and 4 to 5 percent when using E15. In short, this is a change that will have minimal impact on most drivers and their budgets. Classic cars and trucks should still avoid ethanol-blended fuels if possible. (There’s little chance of E15 sneaking its way into your tank unannounced: Pumps must be labeled with what type of fuel the consumer is purchasing, and thus you will know whether you are putting E10 or E15 in your tank.) Use a site like Pure-gas.org to find whether there are stations near you with the option of ethanol-free fuels. Lower-ethanol, higher-gasoline fuel may be worth the extra coin for your classic engines, but don’t fret over using E15 in modern vehicles that are used on a regular basis.

Vintage Venture Rally 2022 As a manic gardener I had been praying for decent rain for weeks. Unfortunately it arrived on the day of the Vintage Venture Rally. We were entered in our Model T with no side curtains. The morning started well, no real rain to speak of only the odd light shower. We met at Forever Bound Café at Tamahere for coffee and in some cases cakes. A lovely group of people looking forward to an enjoyable day of motoring. Rally briefing with Bob and then we were away. We were late starting as my driver went wandering and chatting. Tootling through familiar territory, Tamahere, Rukahia, and headed out towards Pirongia through Te Pahu and around Limeworks Loop Road. Fabulous scenery but by this time it was raining sideways and I seemed to be copping most of it. Every time I pulled out my rally route card to answer a question it got more and more saturated. By the end of the rally the top of it was a bit like paper mâché. We made it to the lunch stop at the Te Rore Hall to be handed an enormous lunch. I thought there was enough to share just one between the two of us but no my driver had already eaten his. The fabulous food and coffee were most welcome on a miserable day. After lunch we headed back toward Cambridge via the Rukahia area and Ohaupo. Past the airport and back to the Saint Kilda area for our straightline navigation challenge. Well!! This year I got completely discombobulated! That means, lost, misplaced confused, disappointed and grumpy. I still don’t know where I went wrong but will figure that out at a later date. I still have the notes and its not far from home. We gave up the fight and returned back to the club rooms for an awesome afternoon tea and then the prizegiving. Lorraine and Bryan Cossey were as far as I know the only ones in period costume so easy winners of that trophy. Third place went to David and Mary Thompson , second place to Greg and Gaynor Terrill, and the winners were Mark and Debbie Smith. Congratulations to you all. We had a lovely day considering the rain and inability to finish the straight line. Thankyou so much to Bob and Jillian and their lovely crew of marshalls and helpers. A policeman was patrolling near midnight at a local parking spot overlooking a golf course. He drove by a car and saw a couple inside with the interior light on. Inside there was a young man in the driver's seat reading a computer magazine and a young lady in the back seat calmly knitting.

He stopped to investigate. He walked up to the driver's window and knocked. The young man looked up, obligingly cranked the window down, and said, "Yes, Officer?" "What are you doing?" the policeman asked. "What does it look like?" answered the young man. "I'm reading this magazine." Pointing towards the young lady in the back seat, the officer then asked, "And what is she doing?" The young man looked over his shoulder and replied, "I think she's knitting a sweater." Confused, the officer asked, "How old are you, young man?" "I'm nineteen," he replied. "And how old is she?" asked the officer. The young man looked at his watch and said,

"Well, in about twelve minutes she'll be sixteen."

Moto 60 Outing to Bradley Farm Garden Taumarunui As guests of the Patton’s and the V.C.C. I have been asked to write a paragraph or two about our trip to Taumaranui to visit the Bradley gardens, our trip started in Kinloch with the Patton's, on arriving in Taumaranui (Max navigating with his phone pointing in the wrong direction, we made several trips around town till we found which way to go but a bonus was we found the toilets). Once heading in the right direction it was very easy to find our way to the gardens, we all arrived about the same time and set up our picnic, sitting in the sun and chatting nobody wanted to move, but off we went to do what we had come for, what a lovely garden after a slow meander through which was enjoyed by all, the competition for Mini Golf began and I might add it was fierce, you would have thought it was a bunch of teenagers with all the noise we were making, but fun was had by all, and after a close competition the green jacket was won by Graeme (Julie’s husband), who I understand has to organise next year’s golf match. The Journey back was uneventful as no navigation was required. Thank you, Graham, for organising a lovely day.

Passing of a Club Member Alan Manning Alan and family shifted from the King Country to the Waikato in 2016 Alan passed away on the 1st March in his 78th year Thank you Alan (S) for letting me know which is a real shame. Two patients limp into two different medical clinics with the same complaint. Both have trouble walking and appear to require a hip replacement. The FIRST patient is examined within the hour, is x-rayed the same day and has a time booked for surgery the following week. The SECOND sees his family doctor after waiting 3 weeks for an appointment, then waits 8 weeks to see a specialist, then gets an x-ray, which isn't reviewed for another week and finally has his surgery scheduled for 6 months from then.

Why the different treatment for the two patients? The FIRST is a Golden Retriever. The SECOND is a Senior Citizen. Next time take me to a vet! 23

After a discussion with the committee it has been decided that an advert from a non Waikato VCC member will incur a $15.00 charge. This will cover a three (3) month insertion. After the three (3) months it will be automatically withdrawn. The information in this newsletter and on the club’s web site, is supplied as a service to club members.
