Editor’s Snippet As you flick through the Venture you will see a couple pages that are pushing the fact that the AGM is looming (8th June) and that the club desperately needs positions to be filled. If ever there was a time the club needs you, now is the time. Please give some thought to putting your hand up at the up at the next AGM. As you can see by the adverts appearing throughout the mag, the club is starting to wind up after what you could call a ‘Covid Holiday’ If we took the Ladies Rally as an example I could be so bold as to say that the club and its members are ready to ‘party’. It was an excellent turnout and a credit to the organiser Wayne Hayward and all his merry helpers. The Double 50 is coming up on the 11th June. This is the clubs ‘Prestigious Event’ so lets make it ‘a goody’ It covers ALL vehicle age groups so there is no excuse for every member not to enter. As you can see things have changed this year. It’s only a one day event and not in a long weekend. The committee is trying this format as many members criticised the fact that the event was on a long weekend and it interfered with family events. So there you have it. Get your car ready!! If ever there was a time to show your support for the club and the rally organisers now is the time. The rally will start wtth a

Meanwhile on the 1st May the Moto 60 Group is off to Taumarunui to an award winning garden and the location for the clubs National Mini Golf Tournament and the chance to win the coveted Green Jacket. If your car can keep up with modern traffic please enter. If your car is out of action, no problem, bring a modern. See, no excuse for not seeing you at Taumaranui is there???

Ch a irm a n ’s Ch a tter Chairman’s Report May As the season changes we are reminded that winter is on the way. With winter comes a need to ensure that our cars are up to scratch for winter motoring. It may be a good time to book a little hoist time in our new workshop, just get hold of one of the Workshop Committee to book. Also if you would like to train as a “Person in charge” (PIC) for the workshop please contact the Workshop Committee or Heather (Club Secretary). Recently the Ladies Rally was held. It was a great sceptical of cars and Ladies adorned with “Rest and Relaxation” themed outfits. Thanks must go to Wayne Hayward for his efforts in plotting the rally and made most of the prizes and to those who prepared food and waited on our participants. An excellent day out! We seem to have a little more clarity around events as we move in to orange on the traffic light setting. This has started to inspire our events that were not held last year to be organised and run in their normal time slot. This includes the Vintage Venture in May, Double 50 in June, Daffodil Run in August, PV Rally in September, Veteran Rally and Swap meet in November. I urge you to get your cars out and join us for some of these runs as it takes time and effort to bring these to you.

June is our 2022 AGM for the Waikato Veteran & Vintage Car Club. Please give some serious consideration to putting yourself forward as several spots are available. Nomination Forms are attached to this magazines email. It is not to arduous task, but all people have varied skills and together we can make a difference. Please give it some consideration. S e c r e t a r y Secretary’s Report May Thank you to Les King for the kind offer to mow our club lawns regularly and the scout paddock next door when required. Lawns and edges are looking awesome. Steve Payne donating an edge trimmer, Steve said it may need someone to give it a service. Members who attended the social club night 12th April had a great chat, told some jokes and enjoyed a lovely supper supplied by all. Thankyou. Suggestions for club night will be accepted, now with Covid easing up more of our members will be able to come along and enjoy the company. I have been busy working on members service awards, working on these being presented at our Waikato VVCC AGM 8th June 2022. Will keep respective members updated. If anyone has an item to be added to the Annual General Meeting 8th June Agenda under General Business, please email this waikato@vcc.org.nz or ring me on 021 684 938. Keeping master copies of members information is an on-going task. Please remember to let me know when phone numbers, physical addresses, email addresses change even vehicles sold and added to your fleet. Jillian and myself will be out checking the Double 50 route which Wayne H and Brent Terrill have plotted. Double 50 will be a bit different this year which is exciting. There are a lot of members who give up their time and work behind the scenes, without these members the club would struggle. Members who have given so much time to the club over many years, perhaps you may have ideas that you can share and would like to see some time. Thank you to all of these members. If any member would like to plot or check a Rally route, please let me know. You may even know of some interesting places we could visit on the different car runs that are available eg Gypsy Rose and Road Runners. M o to r c y c le Motorcycle Report May Our 28th Mooloo Meander Rally was a great success, forty two bike entered ranging from 1924 BSA to a 2020 Honda Comb, for a full report on where we went and what we did is best summarised by Bob’s article. We cannot run these events with help, thanks to Robert for plotting the run, Chris and Bryce for doing the backup duties with a loan trailer from Dave Mayhew, marshals were Graham and Pat at the start with Andy and Fred at the lunch stop, also the ladies who helped with the teas and table setup. The Electric Vehicle Scam—May Be One Person’s Opinion, but an Inconvenient truth Dr. Jay Lehr and Tom Harris

The utility companies have thus far had little to say about the alarming cost projections to operate electric vehicles (EVs) or the increased rates that they will be required to charge their customers. It is not just the total amount of electricity required, but the transmission lines and fast charging capacity that must be built at existing filling stations. Neither wind nor solar can support any of it. Electric vehicles will never become the mainstream of transportation! EV Charging Insanity In order to match the 2,000 cars that a typical filling station can service in a busy 12 hours, an EV charging station would require 600, 50-watt chargers at an estimated cost of $24 million and a supply of 30 megawatts of power from the grid. That is enough to power 20,000 homes. Almost no one thinks about the fact that it can take 30 minutes to 8 hours to recharge a vehicle between empty or just topping off. What are the drivers doing during that time? “If you’ve got cars coming into a gas station, they would stay for an average of five minutes. If you’ve got cars coming into an electric charging station, they would be at least 30 minutes, possibly an hour, but let’s say its 30 minutes. So that’s six times the surface area to park the cars while they’re being charged. So, multiply every petrol station in a city by six. Where are you going to find the place to put them?” Used Car Market The average used EV will need a new battery before an owner can sell it, pricing them well above used internal combustion cars. The average age of an American car on the road is 12 years. A 12-year-old EV will be on its third battery. A Tesla battery typically costs $10,000 so there will not be many 12-year-old EVs on the road. Good luck trying to sell your used green electric car! EVs Per Block In Your Neighbourhood A home charging system for a Tesla requires a 75-amp service. The average house is equipped with 100-amp service. On most suburban streets the electrical infrastructure would be unable to carry more than three houses with a single Tesla. For half the homes on your block to have electric vehicles, the system would be wildly overloaded. Batteries Although the modern lithium-ion battery is four times better than the old lead-acid battery; gasoline holds 80 times the energy density. The great lithium battery in your cell phone weighs less than an ounce while the Tesla battery weighs 1,000 pounds. And what do we get for this huge cost and weight? We get a car that is far less convenient and less useful than cars powered by internal combustion engines. Bryan Leyland explained why: “When the Model T came out, it was a dramatic improvement on the horse and cart. The electric car is a step backward into the equivalence of an ordinary car with a tiny fuel tank that takes half an hour to fill. It offers nothing in the way of convenience or extra facilities.” In Conclusion The electric automobile will always be around in a niche market never exceeding 10% of the cars on the road. All automobile manufacturers are investing in their output and all will be disappointed in their sales. Perhaps they know this and will manufacture just what they know they can sell. 7

The Waikato Branch announces formation of an Early Eras motoring group

to cater for the special requirements of vehicles produced in the early days of motoring, and their enthusiasts.

Venturers Report - May Not long to wait now for the opportunity to use your early era vehicles with the club as the Vintage Venture Rally is due to be held on Sunday 15th May (see advert page 9). Start will be from the car park adjacent to the Forever Bound Café at Tamahere Shops, which are off the Cambridge Expressway near Hamilton. Unfortunately, the Aero Café at Hamilton Airport control tower has now been closed permanently, so an alternative start point was necessary for you to get your coffee fix for the challenge that lies ahead. We have plotted a run of about 80 miles of comfortable and picturesque motoring, with just a little low-level competition to find the winners. Lunches can be ordered, or bring your own to the country hall, where tea and coffee will be supplied. There are no silent checks involved and all roads are sealed. Petrol will be available, on course at the 60 mile mark, so you will need to start with a good supply on board. Check out further details on the entry form and ensure you get your entry in to the organisers in good time. A mere four weeks later there is another opportunity to motor the vintage wagon with the club when the Double Fifty is held on the second weekend in June. Not at the usual Queen’s Birthday weekend this year, so make sure you update your diary and get your entry in when forms become available. STUDEBAKER PROJECT You will have read in the previous Venture that the club has been given an almost completely restored 1918 Studebaker car as a project for completion. This is due to the generosity of member Hugh Webley who has had the project on the go for some fifty years and now finds that he can no longer house it to get it finished. It is a 1918 Studebaker Light Four Roadster Type SH with a 3900cc en-bloc motor. This type, in four and six-cylinder versions, was developed for an anticipated market revival when the First World War ended. It enjoyed only a quite short production run in 1918 and 1919. The number of these Light Fours built in both South Bend, Indiana and Walkerville, Ontario in Canada are limited. Most seem to have been tourers, with very few sedans known and only a limited number of roadsters, making it quite a rare model. This vehicle, being right hand drive, was built in Walkerville and had originally been trucked by an owner in the Wairarapa, so Hugh has had to substantially rebuild the roadster style body and hood. Several aspects of tidy-up and finishing work are required relating to the bodywork and mechanicals. This should enable quite a lot of you who are interested to gain some extra experience in workshop tasks or contribute skills that you already have. The Venturers team will keep the job moving and on track, while Branch Committee have approved the project and budget to completion. A picture of the car leaving Hugh's garage recently on the way to temporary storage gives a good idea of its state of completion. Once the workshop essentials of light, heat and space are available, transport to the club property can be arranged. With a plan to have regular working sessions, this is exactly what the new workshop can contribute to club activities, so give a thought to where you might fit into the picture. When completed this vehicle should turn out to be quite a ‘motorable’ Veteran. It is intended to complete the restoration to a tidy, but definitely not to a pristine state and it will be offered for sale once road legal, firstly to branch members then, if not sold, more PLENTY OF PARKING widely. Road Runners Moto 60 Motoring The instigator of the Moto 60 Motoring Group Graham Pate has had a change of plans and will now be around to take the Moto 60 Group on a run he has planned.. A few weeks ago there was an article on TV about a family that had created an amazing 5 acre garden at Taumarunui after 25 years of hard work. The garden is called The Bradley Farm. It has recently been recognized as a 5 Star Garden. Along with the beautiful gardens there is also a mini Golf Course onsite and various art displays etc. Kick off is from the clubrooms at 9.30am. It is a straight run there and back with a possible coffee stop on the way. BRING A PICNIC LUNCH and have it at the venue. Once lunch is over there is a casual walk around the garden. The final participation is the Annual Championship Mini Golf Tournament where the winner will receive the coveted “Green Jacket”.

It is a four hour drive there and back. If you are keen to join the group please send Graham an email of your intensions. In this Covid environment that we are in at present, he really needs to know the numbers as low entry numbers may facilitate a cancellation of the run. Please note!! This run is NOT only for cars 1960 onwards. It is more for cars that can do 60MPH all day long irrespective of the age of the vehicle. Do you own one that can handle the speed? If yes, then come on, join the group for a great day of motoring. Think about taking your modern if you want to.

A man and his wife are awakened at 3 o'clock in the morning by a loud pounding on the door. The man gets up and goes to the door where a drunken stranger, standing in the pouring rain, is asking for a push. "Not a chance," says the husband, "it is three o'clock in the morning!" He slams the door and returns to bed. Who was that?" asked his wife. "Just some drunk guy asking for a push," he answers. "Did you help him?" she asks. "No, I did not, it is three in the morning and it is pouring out!" "Well, you have a short memory," says his wife. "Can't you remember about three months ago when we broke down and those two guys helped us? I think you should help him, and be ashamed of your self!" The man does as he is told, gets dressed, and goes out into the pounding rain. He calls out into the dark, "Hello, are you still there?" "Yes," comes back the answer. "Do you still need a push?" calls out the husband. "Yes, please!" comes the reply from the dark. "Where are you?" asks the husband. Over here on the swing!" replies the drunk

I know there are many helpers in the club and eventually I think they all need to be thanked for their tremendous effort but for now…. Having attended the Ladies Rally I couldn’t help but notice how well the club grounds were looking. It was created by three of our already busy members Jillian Hayton (treasurer), Heather Boswell (Secretary) and Brian Cossey

The trio have made a concerted effort to bring the grounds up to date and they have certainly achieve that. On behalf of all the members, A BIG THANKS to you all and any other helpers you may have in the wings The grounds are looking superb. PS. Bereavement Notice

Chris Brown Te Awamutu

It is very sad to see Chris Brown from Te Awamutu has passed away. Chris joined the Waikato VCC in 1988. Next year he would have been with the club for 35 years. Chris was always so willing to give of his time and plumbing or drain laying expertise whenever the club needed those skills and a keen motoring member for many years. He contributed to many works around the club property over the years. Quite recently he contributed the labour and materials for the stormwater drainage of the new workshop. 13

8th June 2022 Please keep the above date free. This years AGM is going to be a very “interesting” AGM so numbers on the floor are essential. Please make your presence available. The committee will need your knowledge and your vote on the night. As much as the government has lifted the restriction on gathering outside etc it is simply too late to organize the hillclimb for this year. For those that look forward to the annual event you now have another year to prepare your car. 17

2022 Mooloo Meander –Done! Despite the crowded calendar due to many rescheduled events and the omnipresent effects of the Covid restrictions still in place, we managed to hold the Mooloo Meander for the club’s motorcycle enthusiasts again this year, with a very satisfactory outcome. Over forty riders from all over the top half of the North Island enjoyed an extremely scenic run heading out from Cambridge over to the Te Pahu area and back again, without anyone ending up on the back-up trailer. As usual, we all gathered at Branch clubrooms early on Saturday following a friendly evening get-together at the Prince Albert in Cambridge the night before – a regular feature much appreciated by our out-of-town visitors. The morning was pleasantly warm and calm, with a confidence boosting forecast, and so it turned out with comfortable riding conditions lasting throughout the day. Dual use of the club property meant we were sharing the place with a group of motor-homers camped on the adjacent paddock; good to see our facilities being well used for a change. But not for long though, for as the clock struck ten, at one minute intervals our fleet of twowheelers set off on their journey via Leamington and Ohaupo to cross the swampland and gain great views heading towards Pirongia on quiet country roads, doing the Limeworks loop and finding lunch in town at the Classics Museum. A pleasant sociable interlude in the warm sunshine and chance for some to take advantage of a museum concession ticket before it was time to head away again. Robert Simpson’s return route back to Cambridge was a little more direct, so soon the teapot was in use again while we dissected the day’s highs and lows again – not too many lows by the look of the many cheerful faces as the bikes arrived back. Roy King on his diminutive 1924 BSA Round Tank or the flamboyant presence of the Lane’s huge two-tone Indian indicate what a big range of machines the motorcycle group now caters for. In between, the Ariels, Triumphs, Nortons, Enfields, Velocettes and a mixture of exotics make this annual line-up a veritably nostalgic representation of New Zealand’s two-wheeled history. Then came the celebratory dinner, back at the clubrooms as usual – Margaret Roberts again did us proud with a meal that would have made each and everyone feel a winner. But there can be only one champion and that honour this year, by the benign mystery of the Mooloo event’s secret formula, fell to visitor Dave Mayhew coming from Rotorua and riding his regular mount, a horizontally-opposed Douglas twin. The next most anticipated award though is for the Best Performed Waikato Branch Rider and that epithet fell this year to Kelvin Mitchell and his Ariel, who now has the opportunity to set us an even better course next year. Biofuel and Environmentally Friendly Cars The following article was sent to me by a member (Terry Honan). At the time Terr y as ked me the if the VCC were or had been in dis cuss ion with the go vernment in regards to our old cars us ing bio fuels ? To date I ha ven’t heard an ything, but then it is early da ys. How will a bio fuel mix affect our old cars rubber in fuel pumps and carbs etc etc?

How biofuel stacks up If you use 30 litres of biofuel a week you will save over 250 kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions every year. Biofuel is better suited to newer vehicles however many older vehicles can use it too. Check our list of biofuel compatible cars (below) or contact your vehicle manufacturer before using biofuel. Bioethanol has 30% less energy content than mineral fuel, which means you consume about 3% more fuel with a 10% bioethanol blend. However bioethanol does contain more oxygen so your fuel will burn better and performance may be improved.

Power sources The new generation of environmentally friendly (or "green") cars and vehicles are being designed to run on a number of different power sources; anything from bioethanol to biodiesel and hydrogen. Here's a rundown.

Hydrogen-powered

Plain old water is the only emission from hydrogen-powered cars. However, like other experimental hydrogen-powered vehicles, it's prohibitively expensive and hydrogen production is still CO2 intensive.

Hybrids

Hybrid vehicles use two types of power sources; a petrol engine and an electric motor 20

which maximises the benefits of both and opens up possibilities for the future. Hybrid vehicles typically use one of two types of hybrid systems; the series hybrid and the parallel hybrid.

Biodiesel

In New Zealand, biodiesel can be sourced from vegetable oils or, more commonly, tallow which is a byproduct of the meat industry. The New Zealand Engine Fuel Specifications permit mineral diesel to be blended with up to 5% biodiesel for retail sale, without the fuel needing to be labelled as biofuel. That means there is no need for you to make any modifications or other changes to your engine, or undergo any changes to your vehicle's maintenance schedules. Currently biodiesel is retailed in New Zealand by Gull at selected service stations, and will soon be retailed by Z Energy in the upper North Island.

Bioethanol

Bioethanol is a renewable fuel made by fermenting and distilling products containing sugars and starches. In New Zealand bioethanol is currently made from dairy industry byproducts, and is blended to a maximum 10% with petrol. Bioethanol fuel blends have been used in Europe, Australia and North and South America, for many years. Currently only Gull sells a bioethanol in New Zealand, with 10% bioethanol blended into their 98 octane petrol.

LPG Any petrol engine can be converted to run on LPG (liquefied petroleum gas), but although it may cost you less at the pump, the conversion can be pricey and you may lose precious boot space to the second fuel tank needed

JOKE The police pulls a car over on a lonely back road and approaches the blonde lady driver. "Is there a reason why you're weaving all over the road?" the officer asks. e couldn’t have asked for a better day for our annual Ladies Rally. As the 30 ladies gathered at the clubrooms ready for a day of rest and relaxation we were all guided to our seats where in front of each one of us was a beautifully wrapped booked along with a colourful coffee mug. These were no ordinary books however, upon untying the ribbons and opening the book we found that some clever person (thank you Tracey) had hollowed out each book and filled them with goodies. Our treats were to continue as the boys bought us out what seemed to be an endless supply of yummy scones and cream. We managed to drag ourselves away from the clubrooms and start on our very scenic drive through the Waikato countryside out towards Walton where we stopped off at a boutique chocolate maker who was none other than our fellow member Valmae Spence. It was a very timely visit seeing as how Easter was just around the corner and a perfect excuse to buy some of her indulgent wares. Moving on we all headed back to clubrooms on more pretty roads and the luncheon that awaited us. The boys outdid themselves at lunch – Hugh got to try out his new sandwich maker which was a real hit. Prizegiving followed with Cazna and her mum Doreen taking out the best dressed prize. Our two youngest competitors given a lovely gift. Third place went to Gaynor and Elle Terrill. 2nd place to Tracey Hayward and Carey Anne and my trusty navigator Pat Holmes and I took out First Place. Many thanks to Wayne for plotting an excellent run, it was just perfect – a bit of retail therapy, a relaxing drive and way too much food!! PTO
