Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone By the time you read this the Daffodil Rally For Cancer will have happened . “Hell I hope it was fine” I am taking advantage of this editorial to thank all who took part and to those who continue to lend their support as Marshall at Club events . Without their help we would not be able to run these events. A special mention to Murray Ashby, who although not able to attend let Brandon drive his Model A truck as our lead vehicle. Hope you have started filling out your entry form for the PV Rally on September 22, simply complete it, send it in and join us on this great day out. Should be a great spring Run. The Bi-annual Kairangi Hill Climb is all go for October 6 . Please can we have some willing helpers for this event to assist with setting up and packing up this event . Contact Andy or me In the same theme helpers are also required for our Swap Meet on November 17. More about that later. Take care, keep your cars Warranted and Regoed as there is plenty happening. C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS AND DELEGATES REPORT Having just attended the National AGM and the August Executive Meeting I thought it would make good sense to include my reports on those meetings with my Chairman’s report. This year the meetings were held in Greymouth and we were given a very hospitable welcome. The Executive meeting commenced on Friday evening and concluded on Saturday after the AGM. It was very disappointing some branches did not bother to even send a delegate Some matters arising from the minutes of the previous meeting were as follows; VVC National Day Stickers were available to be collected. Branch Constitution; The Executive may delegate any of its power to a Management Committee Officer or Person , or to the Management Committee. . Radio Interviews have been done with Roger White and Dianne Humphries, this has been put on the Clubs Face Book page. Club Captains were encouraged to visit the Health & Safety details in the Branch Manual, Item 43. The next DVD of Beaded Wheels is a few years away. 2020 AGM is in Whanganui 2021 AGM is in Southland 2022 AGM is in Auckland. The remit to change the By-Laws regarding notices of motion was passed but not unanimously. The proposed budget was approved The Calendar of Events was displayed and Delegates were requested to check it. The next executive meeting will be held in Wellington on 28th March 2020 from 9am to 5pm. A National Vintage Rally was proposed by Central Hawkes Bay Branch. This will be held in September 2020 with a maximum of 75 cars. This proposal was carried by the meeting Don Muller was re-appointed as the Archivist. Murray Trounson gave a presentation of the On Line Membership application. This will be linked to the Website and will allow for a one off payment. 4
B.O.P Branch moved to change their name to “BOP Vintage and Classic Car Club”. This was put to the meeting and was lost. Kevin Clarkson reported that there is quite a few copies of Beaded Wheels that would be ideal to out during the Clubs National Day. Branches were requested to order some after the meeting and they would be sent by courier to the Branch by the Friday before National Day. I have ordered 50 copies. The AGM started sharp at 9am on Saturday morning. The Grey District Mayor, Tony Kokshooorn opened the meeting, and welcomed all the club members to Greymouth. Andrew Anderson, a founding member, gave his usual rousing speech to members about encouraging the youth of today to become members, and to embrace the wide range of club eligible vehicles. Also to make sure that the fun element is included in all events. The Financial Report was accepted, The Annual Subscription will remain the same. The Election of the Committee was, Tony Bartlett, Ed Boyd, and George Kear. The BOP Branch proposed to hold a “HIGHLAND FLING” Event. This is a Three day event held in The Taihape area of the Central North Island, over Anzac weekend of the 24th, 25th, and 26th April 2020. It will travel across back country roads and private farms and is hoped to be an Annual Event. This is open to Veteran and Vintage vehicles only. The Registrar gave an excellent presentation called “The Big Question, will we be able to drive in 20, 30, 50 years”. This presentation was very thought provoking. He also explained who the Technical Committee are and what they do. The Speed Steward raised the point that in the future there will be a test for Motor Sport Licensees and that hopefully Speed Steward Training will still happen in the future. There has been a change of Rally Director for the 2021 Vero International Festival of Historic Motoring; our very own Greg Terrill has been appointed the new Rally Director. Those of you that remember the 2000 Rally will be delighted. Ross Holden, the Communications and Marketing person has announced his retirement. A vote of thanks was given to Dianne Ross for her contribution to Beaded Wheels for the Veteran Column, Brass Notes. The J.L. Goddard Trophy was awarded to Murray Toms from Tauranga for an Epic Veteran Driving Adventure in New Zealand. 5
One of the most exciting reports I have heard in a long time was given by our President, Dianne Quarrie, on updating our image. She presented some exciting new ideas, keeping the legal identity of “The Vintage Car Club of NZ (INC)”, but having a new Logo and a new Tag Line. As she said it is early days but the members gave her the approval to carry on with the project involving designers. Gaynor Terrill gave a presentation on the 5 year Strategic Plan. This is a living document and keeps on changing. Overall a very positive meeting and very well run. On Branch matters, remember the PV Rally on the 22nd September, get out your cars, Trucks, and Motorcycles for a fun day A very warm Waikato welcome to our new members, hopefully we canal catch up at a event in the near future. Remember to keep smiling and Keep Left. Graham Pate. VCC FACEBOOK PAGE The Vintage Car Club's facebook page is now two years old and has over 1500 followers. It has interesting stories, posts on events and photos of vintage and classic vehicle activities from around New Zealand and the world. One of the photo posts on the last Irishman Rally achieved a reach of 8,253 people. For those who already have a facebook account: Go to the VCC facebook page and LIKE it. Posts will then appear in YOUR facebook stream and you can share them with your friends For those who don’t have a facebook page or don’t want to set up an account: type in the link below and then save it in bookmarks in your internet browser. You will then have easy access to the page whenever you want to see the latest posts. To access the Club facebook page go to: https://www.facebook.com/ vintagecarclubofnewzealand/ or type Vintage Car Club of New Zealand into facebook search. Our facebook page includes notifications of upcoming events but it’s not a buy, sell and exchange page. There are other avenues for that information. It would be great if you could email us pictures and include a couple of words about the photo from your Branch events or rallies you are attending around the country. These provide content of interest for enthusiasts around the world. Send 6

You can add stories and pictures of your adventures and read about other people’s adventures. Please check out the VCC web page for information about club activities and all the other branches magazines, well worth a read. Don’t forget our own branches web site for upcoming information and entry forms for future events. The North Island Easter Rally details are now on the notice board so have a look and get ready to make your bookings. The entry forms will be out soon so watch this space. C lu b C a p t a in Our Club I so hope our immediate past Chairman Tony doesn’t tar and feather me on a pole down the main street of Hamilton (June Venture) for seeing this differently. I don’t see our Club or Branches dying. We are all getting older and our new members are older when joining. Also folk are living much longer with more quality of life, like being part of a respected National Car Club. It is worth noting that while Rally entrants are lower in number, it’s simply about the enjoyment entrants find in entering and participating that makes a Rally a success or otherwise, not the numbers. Our Branch offers every type of event that a member could wish to enjoy. The Committee is always mindful that ‘things could be done better’ when making decisions and usually compromises with all opinions and this results in outcomes ‘not being too bad’. I have mentioned before if any newer member(s) who have been with us a while, would like to be part of an activity that they haven’t tried before to feel free to give me a ring and I will team them up with a member of like interests who has ‘been there, done that’. We have a massive cross-section of folk making up our membership. All having different thoughts on what they want from their Club. I have mentioned before the different sections. Our Motorcycle section works well as does the Wednesday Wanders and I said in last month’s Venture that ‘The Projectors’ will be as successful. Tony mentioned in the June Venture that the Veteran Section was not performing. At this stage we do not have a Veteran Section. Greg spoke of the advantages of having one, a couple of AGM’s ago, so now would be a good time. If Veteran owners think it would be worthwhile, please talk to me. Veterans are so much a part of our motoring history, but are becoming more and more unsuitable for Rally use on roads with modern traffic. Sections within VCC Branches are informal, no set rules, but of course, must operate within our Club’s rules. All that is needed is an interested member to ‘front’ the section, and advertise in the Venture to let other members know what is happening within the section. Terry 8
Motorcycle Venture Motorcycle Report – September 2019 With Peter away overseas at Venture closing date, here is an update on activities from me to keep all you two and three-wheel enthusiasts informed. The weather on the day of our August outing was such that on arrival we chose to forsake the planned run and have a tall story session at the clubrooms, before heading for a sociable lunch in town. Many arrived in cars which was probably sensible and nobody wants to go to a nice café soaking wet! The visit later to Kelvin & Annette McWha’s home to inspect a collection of rural equipment, miniature steam engines and other essential men’s toys was an interesting way to spend a couple of hours. In October we have the annual South Waikato Run starting from the clubrooms on Saturday 12th when we hope to see that Murray has completed his Fieseler Storch aeroplane. What an ambitious work that is! The booking form for this run will come out shortly. Our run from the clubrooms on Sunday 15 th December, after a lunch break near the venue, will be visiting the display room of an enthusiastic bow hunter. The tales of his experiences and the display will impress for sure. Then in February our supported motorcycle tour will be leaving after lunch from Cambridge on Friday 14 th for a weekend in the pumice country, staying lodge-style at Whakamaru. It will be an all-inclusive cost for meals and accommodation with no bedding or self catering required. Expect the entry form for this to be distributed later in the year – numbers will be limited to the accommodation available. Bob Hayton

Waikato Shed Raid
Sunday 4th August 2019
Sunday arrived with the forecast, cold, squally rain, sometimes heavy. This was enough for me to forget about getting the 54’ out so out came the ute. Meeting at the 1st venue :- C & R Developments classic car museum in Hautapu. This not being the 1st time here for us – only a month previously with a classic car fundraising event and several times before that. It’s still a spectacle every time and with the race car belonging to the mighty Kenny Smith sitting inside the main entrance has the added attraction of different cars on display each time. For those that haven’t been here can I suggest you put it on your bucket list & maybe bring the grandies. (Under supervision of course) There’s even a toy section displaying the Tonka toys in a real looking quarry as well as another section displaying the good old days of a workshop. While there also make sure to climb aboard the massive bulldozer all 176 tonnes & see how far you can see out (our chairman even though is short had trouble seeing very far when standing). From here we travelled to the next interesting place which was the construction of the new building currently being built for APL manufacturing. (Aluminium & plastic extrusion, powder coating & distribution centre). Special thanks must go to Graham Boswell on behalf of Foster Construction for allowing us onto site to experience the size of this enormous building which is going to be 114 metres wide x 414m long. (That’s a big man’s shed). It will have 2,500 tonnes of steel, 2,500cu mtrs of concrete in the footings and 2,000m³ of concrete in the floor. Amazing. Next it was onto Whatawhata for a lunch break and a look see of a private collection including various tractors some dating way back and some at various stages of renovation. The next stop was a short drive down the road where we saw some cars that were at various stages of resto. Those that were interested then travelled onto Waikato Engine Reconditioners where I found some very large engine blocks that unfortunately showed signs of lacking any oil and look likely will end up as boat moorings. (It pays to check the oil) I also found some valuable model T parts I was missing so now I can concentrate on getting my T back on the road. Last of all it was time for a cuppa which happened to correspond with a visit to Murray & Anne Ashby’s residence to check out his Model ‘A’s both fully restored and some under restoration and to see the end results of a skilled & talented man. Thanks for the cuppa Anne. 12
Also thanks to those that opened their sheds and homes plus special thanks to Theo for the effort in organising the day. Well worth it in my books. Also thanks to those lot that travelled over from the BOP, I believe there was 22 cars – hope you enjoyed the day and sorry about the squally showers. There must have been at least 50 or so cars in total so the day was a very great success even if the weather was not that kind but hey it’s the middle of winter and it’s nice and green. KAIRANGI HILLCLIMB SUNDAY OCTOBER 6TH. 2019. MARSHALLS NEEDED! This is one of our main events of the year and we need your manpower and otherperson power! Flag marshals (and a chief flag marshal) wanted on the day. Approx. 8am til 4pm. Also, a couple of strong chaps to assist chief haybale marshall Graham Holmes first thing and last thing. Bronya, our chief lady-in-baking, will probably need a hand with all the lovely food that we get to consume on the day. A caravan or campervan for our timing person to sit in and record the times. Very important! Also, a timing person to sit in the van and record the times. Only needs to be able to write numbers! Come to Kairangi for a great day out! All the thrills of motor racing and you get fed and watered for free! We are expecting a large contingent of vintage sports cars from Waitemata Branch.
