Editor’s Snippet Hi All We see another month pass by, there is a feeling of Spring in the air and if we can shake off the curse of the Auckland based covid out break maybe then we can :resume normal transmission and get back to what we are all about. Recently Heather and I spent 2 weeks away in our caravan, touring the East Cape down to Wellington and back up the western side home. This replaced our “Route 66 Trip” that was cancelled.(Bloody Covid again) It was a great trip, we enjoyed it very much, maybe a practice for retirement. The Rimutaka Ranges certainly lived up to there reputation for gusty winds, this made the traverse of the Range a careful and slow journey. There is certainly a “closed up shop” in many small towns along the way. The towns that have embraced history in varying degrees have certainly grown and prospered. I know Greytown was very busy on Saturday. We waited for some time to get a coffee at morning tea time. Our pick for a good coffee and scone has to go to “The 6 Sisters” in Napier, closely followed by “The Landgirls Cafe” on the way down to Cape Palliser lighthouse. It is not that I have a coffee addiction or anything like that, it was more passing a little good will country wide. We are hoping that Level 1 Covid restrictions can return sooner rather than later, which will allow most Club activities to proceed. This will let us get out on Club runs and other social gatherings . Keep to the left, enjoy your motoring and travel well.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS REPORT OCTOBER 2020 Give yourselves a huge pat on the back for all the support that all of you gave to our Cancer Fund Raising effort. At our last club night, we had a fund-raising auction for our local Cancer Society. Due to this dammed Covid thing, the national Daffodil Day was cancelled then the branch fund raising day was also cancelled. So, a decision was made to change our Shiny Parts Auction to a general Auction with all the funds raised going to our local Cancer Society. Thanks to all members who donated items for the Auction. Of course, thanks go to all the members who bravely placed the winning bids, and also thanks to the members who sent in cash donations. Ian Patton organized the Auctioneer and looked after him for the night. For this we thank you Ian. Your Committee agreed to match the funds raised to a maximum of $1,000. This means the amount we can proudly donate to our Cancer Society will be in excess of $2,500. So again, will done fellow members for your efforts. Our next club night is our AGM. This has been delayed since June, so let’s have a good turnout. We can discuss our Annual Accounts, the Long-Term Maintenance Budget, and the 20/21 Budget. A new committee will be elected and bare in mind that all positions are open this year. So, if you want to make some changes come on board and assist your branch. At the AGM the Shed Project presentation will be shown again, to refresh everyone’s memory, then we will have a discussion, where questions can be asked and answered. Following this a decision can be made whether to progress forward or not. Remember that our constitution does not allow Proxy Votes, so to vote you must be there. Spring is now here so that means great motoring weather, so polish the cars and motorbikes and get them out of the garage and go for a cruise. There is plenty coming up over the next three months before Christmas, yes, it is that close. The Veteran Rally is being held on the 1st November at the Tower Museum in Matamata. The Museum is holding a Live Day at the same time and the Clydesdale horses will be there giving rides. So, for a nice day out come and join us at the Tower Museum, bring your club car out for a run and enjoy Matamata’s Museum. A warm Waikato welcome to all our new members and I hope to catch up with you at an event soon. Please remember to wear your name badges. Keep smiling (behind your mask) and keep left.

Club Captain’s Report We in New Zealand seem to be doing better than most other countries trying to stop Covid19 spreading to such an extent there are no ICU beds left for victims. Perhaps this is why members are so keen to give their club eligible vehicles a run (now we can). Wednesday Wanders are following other branches with the mid-week runs being very popular. Our Vintage Venture Rally is being well supported with good entries and our Club Runs are attracting a good range of vehicles. I failed to organise better weather for our last Club Run to Raglan. It would have been so nice to have enjoyed fish and chips in the reserve, had it not been so b……y cold! The run out to Te Toto Gorge would have been more worthwhile had visibility been better. The Gorge’s history is not that pleasant. It seems it was inhabited between 1700 and 1800 and was used as an area for growing food. Many hundreds of years earlier, the folk living there were chased out over the cliffs, their bones are still there today, well buried by scrub. With our Event Calendar being a bit difficult to get out to members, some activites, like our last Club Run, had to rely on email, but we should be OK from now on. Coming up in October, we have a Road Runners outing on Sunday 4th, a mini shed raid on Sunday 11th and the motor cyclists to Tokoroa on Saturday 17th.. Our Branch must be one of the best in having events to suit all members and all our different vehicles. Terry
Motorcycle Motor Cycle Section Our planned run for September went ahead on Sunday the 20 th. Thanks to Terry Pidduck for arranging a visit to Dick Marshall’s home and for putting on the sausage sizzle lunch at his shed in Ringer Road. Full report on the run next month. I have sent out the entries for our South Waikato Run to all the M/C team, which is on the 17 th October. If I have missed any one who would like to come, please give me a call 8230944. Clive Somerville has very kindly offered to do the back up duties again, thanks Clive. The Auckland rally is scheduled for Saturday the 21 st November, but as yet I don’t have any entry forms. We had a good number of Waikato people who look part last year, so it would be good if we can have the same number again, as they support our Mooloo Rally. About all for now Safe Riding, Peter. 1924 Buick McLaughlin Tourer - Owners Peter and Julia Lowe This Buick was bought in the late '90's off Hal O'Rourke when he lived in Hamilton. We had a quick look at it around 10pm at night after a train trip to Whangamomana that day and bought it there and then. A few days later we went back and brought it home with lots of bits and pieces in several boxes along with a spare motor!!! We had never had it so good as our other cars necessitated a lot of trips to swap meets etc and sourcing parts from overseas for them. Once home and unloaded into our shed, I had a good closer look. This inspection revealed a very sound motor car. After storage for a year or two while we finished our '55 Buick Riviera V8, the '24 was brought onto the workshop floor and stripped down. With the body off, all mechanicals were checked out. Only the clutch needed relining. The body was also very sound with not a sign of rust. The doors clicked shut like new. I had to make 2 new hood bows and had a new top fitted, with new upholstery and side curtains. A new coat of paint applied, a touch up of some nickel parts and two new tyres fitted and she was ready to go. All this adds up to a very straight and firm car. Although the '24 models were not renowned for power it ticks along happily at 40 mph. The history of the car is as follows. The car came to New Zealand new in 1924 and was owned by a Miss Wightman in Marton until 1962 with 30779 miles on the clock. It then went through 3 more registered owners and now has a total mileage of 31,776. It has the original ownership papers and still carries its original plates. Rego has been on hold when not in use.

A WEEKEND TO ENJOY It’s quite a while since the Club had such an enjoyable and successful time as that experienced by members and visitors on the third weekend of September! Steve and Cazna Payne did us proud with a Vintage Rally plotted in the Te Kawa area, travelling around Mt Kakepuku and exploring the Otorohanga region on rural roads even the most experienced rallyists must have enjoyed for the first time. The countryside was in great condition with spring growth and new life all around, so one could forget all about the ongoing Covid restrictions and just enjoy a beautiful Saturday afternoon’s motoring in traditional style. This was enhanced by the strong entry with members and vehicles not seen for many months, even years in some cases. And when did you last see two Bugatti’s at the start of a Waikato Branch event? Some of our newer members rather stole the limelight with their ‘dress to era’ offerings, putting the rest of us to shame. There have to be winners of a Branch rally of course and these were found with a few questions to be answered on the way round; no silent checks to search for and no tiresome timing here! Even the very short, but dreaded ‘straight line navigation’ section was so well put together that nobody had to open their escape plan envelope, despite meeting other competitors approaching from the opposite direction. And it was so sociable too. The weather helped of course, but the afternoon tea and later evening meal at Station 32 brought members together in more relaxed surroundings to enjoy each other’s company. Well done Steve and Cazna! Next morning, we were out on the bikes for the Peter Spiller organised motorcycle section run to view Dick and Marianne Marshall’s impressive car collection out Morrinsville way. A threatened shower never materialised so the two dozen participants were able to soak up the ambience and make their favourite ‘take home’ selection from the eclectic offerings – yes, there were enough for each of us to take one! Over traffic free rural roads our twenty strong touring group wound its way back to Tauwhare, to the Terry and Bev Pidduck shed for another dose of early motoring memories, whilst enjoying a sausage sizzle in the spring sunshine. Great roads, great visits and great camaraderie. Well done, everyone! Bob Hayton 10

Joke An extremely rich and famous German sports star was carving up the roads one afternoon in a brand new Porsche. Passing on the right, speeding everywhere, he takes a blind corner at speed and plows into the back of a Trabant, sending them both spiraling into a ditch. Both cars are demolished. The sports star hops out of the twisted wreckage of his Porsche, to see an elderly man climbing out of the Trabant with a jubilant smile on his face. The sports star asks the gentleman if he’s okay, if he’s in shock. The gentleman raises his arms and says “No! This is fantastic! Let’s celebrate! We’re both alive!” He opens what’s left of his Trabant’s door to see a box of Cuban cigars. “What a miracle! Such an impact, and my treasured cigars are okay! Let’s light them and celebrate our good luck!” So the sports star and the gentleman light up, and smoke their cigars. The gentleman looks back inside, and sees his vintage bottle of Scotch and two glasses, and pulls them out. “A toast to us! Such a horrific accident and we made it through without a scratch!” He pours two very tall glasses of Scotch, and hands one to the sports star. They clink their glasses, and the sports star downs his. He looks at the gentleman, standing there with a still-full glass. “Aren’t you having any?” he asks the gentleman. “Oh no, not until the police give you a Breathalyzer.” 14
MINI SHED RAID- Sunday 11th October 2020 Meet for coffee at Fire Pot Café, Gordonton, and leave at 10am. Travel to Paul Johnston’s shed for a BBQ lunch – bring something to cook and drink. Treasurer’s Report for the AGM A copy of the annual accounts was circulated via email. I was co-opted on to the committee as Treasurer in September 2019 and my priority was to bring the accounts into the modern era. After a bit of investigation, it was agreed that we would adopt MYOB as our accounting platform as they have a generous offer for clubs of just $10 per month. The purpose of having our accounts on this platform is for ease of recording all transactions and producing monthly and annual accounts thereby making it much simpler for future Treasurers to pick up and manage the club’s accounts. It also allows for much greater transparency when the accounts are reviewed. This year’s income shows that our revenue from subscriptions has increased slightly from the previous year. Vero commissions have remained steady but there has been a drop in interest received due to the downturn in interest rates. Our parts shed had a successful year with a healthy increase but the income from the swap meet was down on last year. Covid had an impact on our Rally/ Event income with some costs incurred through cancellation of events. Committee expectations on rally events are that they break even. Our expenses have remained in keeping with the previous year except for maintenance where major work was done on replacing the decking outside the clubrooms. Going forward a 10 year maintenance plan has been established which along with forward budgeting will aim to ensure that the club is doing it’s best to maintain it’s assets and that it also has sufficient funds to function successfully. Just a note on the operation of the club’s bank accounts. We run a business bank account which allows us to transact online. All online payments require authorization from two nominated persons just as any cheque payments also requires two signatures. As I am unable to attend the AGM – if any members have queries on the accounts that they would like answered please give me a call or email me at waikatovcctreasurer@gmail.com prior to the AGM so the question and answer can be provided to the members at the meeting. ART DECO FESTIVAL 2021 THE VETERANS ARE COMING Come to Napier and join the HBVCC for Art Deco 2021 from February 18th -21st. Kindly sponsored again this year by Euro City Ltd In 2021 the Featured Group will be Veteran Motor Vehicles (all will be over 100 years old). We are expecting 50 plus Veterans thus year and already have 25 Veteran entries as at 10 September. Cars, commercials, motorcycles, high-wheelers, steam , electric and petrol. Veterans entered already include an 1895 Velo Benz, 1903/4 Oldsmobiles (3), De Dion, Calcott, Hupmobile, GWK, Dodge (3), Sears, L’etoile, Darracq (2) , Cadillac , Mitchell, Holly, Briscoe, New Pick and 5 Model T Fords. 2021 will be the 90th anniversary of the 1931 Napier Earthquake. We want to get as many EQ survivor cars to attend the 2021 AD Festival as possible. A commemorative banner or similar will be presented to all qualifying vehicles. To qualify your vehicle must have been in Napier or Hastings at the time of the EQ. Please contact me if you have such a vehicle or know someone who has. The same applies if you own or know of any First Response Vehicles that may have been present during the EQ. (eg Ambulance, Fire Engine, Police, Military). For 2021 the main annual rally is again on Friday and we plan to have a touring run plus a picnic lunch at a great lunch venue. On Saturday we will have the morning tea and car show and popular choice at the HBVCC clubrooms, followed by the grand parade. Sunday events include breakfast at the HBVCC clubrooms and the Gatsby picnic in the afternoon. There are many other events offered by Art Deco Trust on the Friday and Saturday nights. Come and join the other 180 plus club eligible vehicles we expect to enter the 2021 Event. If you are entering a Veteran there are special additional events for you on the Wednesday and Thursday of Art Deco Week. If you plan to attend these please plan to arrive in Napier on the Tuesday. Otherwise we suggest you plan to arrive in Napier on Thursday 20th so you can attend the Dinner at the Clubrooms that evening. We have prizes for the best dressed couples again this year. Dinner tickets are limited so be in quick. Go to the HBVCC website for an Entry Form. (www.hbvcc.org.nz). Entry forms for 2021 are available now.
