he Ladies Rally is over with a good result and now the club motors along towards the Vintage Venture on the 16th May and then the clubs premier event the Double 50 on the 5th June followed by the AGM on the 9th June which completes the immediate future of the clubs main activities. Are you going to participate in at least one of the above events ? If no, why not? Is the committee not supplying your motoring needs? What would you like out of the club? After the AGM, the new committee’s task will be to create the coming year’s Event Schedule. To assist, the committee NEEDS YOUR INPUT OR THOUGHTS. Please, please, put your thoughts down in an email (waikatovcceditor@gmail.com) and get it to me and I will pass it on to the committee, who, I’m sure, will be most appreciative. As you can see the entry form for the Vintage Venture is in the centre of this edition. If your car is eligible to enter the Vintage Venture Rally, do it a favour and take it for a run. Fill out the entry form in the centre of this edition, then rip it out and submit it, I’m sure you won’t be disappointed, it will be a good day out. I would like to take this opportunity, once again, to ask a member to give some thought to putting his or her hand up to take over the editorship of the club magazine, as I will be standing down after the next election due to other commitments.

Ch a irm a n ’s Ch a tter Chairman’s Report May Autumn is now upon us and daylight saving has ended but it is still quite warm. In fact, over Easter while we were at Matarangi I went for a swim in the sea and it was quite nice once I got in! However back to car club stuff. Dave Nordell and I attended the March Executive Meeting in Wellington. There was meant to be a guest speaker from NZTA but unfortunately, they cancelled at the last minute. One of the Items they were going to discuss was the ongoing issue of 12 -month WoF’s for car club vehicles. I think this is an issue that NZTA do not want to discuss and the MTA would certainly not want to see this happen. However, this is only my humble opinion. Congratulations on the Ventures Group for holding a very successful weekend for the older vehicles. Next month is June with two very important and very different activities. Firstly, the Double 50 Rally to be held over Queens Birthday weekend. Even if you have never participated in a rally before, come along and either give it ago or do the touring section with no competitive consonants and really simple instructions. So, fill the entry form out and come along. The second one is the Branch AGM, to be held on Wednesday 9 th June. This is a very important meeting where all members have the chance to discuss issues of concern, check the Annual Accounts and look forward to the future. It is also the time to elect the committee members that you want to manage your club over the next 12 months. I have always believed that if you want to change something the best place is to change it from the inside. So come and be part of your branch’s management team. You will all remember in last months chatter I informed you that I will NOT be standing for Chairman again, However I will be staying on in the roll of Immediate Past Chairman for 12 months, so I will be there to offer support and advice. Contact me if you are interested in the Chairman’s position. A warm Waikato welcome to all new members, I hope to catch up with you all at a future club event. Keep smiling and keep safe. Seems everyone is receiving my emails and we have all the correct email addresses. Annual General Meeting coming up June 9 th 2021 everyone welcome. Looking forward to seeing as many members as possible at our AGM. Club Captain - notes all the local events coming up. We really enjoyed the Ladies Rally, a friend from Tauranga came and was my Navigator and also our Grand Daughter came along and enjoyed her day (see her photo on page 25). Bozy and I are away in our caravan from the 17th April to the 16th May. Bev Taylor has kindly accepted to answer the clubs emails and will action everything that comes through. Club Captain’s Report May A warm greeting to you all. By the time you are reading this report Heather and I will be enjoying four weeks cruising parts of the South Island. We are making our way down to visit the Arrowtown Autumn Festival, then on to Cromwell (to Highland Park) for a few days, then having a look at the Westcoast for the remainder of the visit. I am sure you have all been there so we will do our best to enjoy the experience. April Club night was well attended, with Hugh and Graeme putting on the old classic Genevieve complete with Ice creams at ½ time. Thanks Hugh and Graeme. May Club Night will feature Craig Vincent CEO of Profile Group Ltd. Craig will speak to you all on the history , present day developments and future developments of APL (Architectural Profile Ltd). APL are better known as the very large development going on at Hautapu at present (adjoining the Expressway). Im sure you will find Craig very interesting. The Mooloo Meander was held recently. Terry reminded me it was Club Captains responsibility to organize the weather. Sorry Terry beyond my control. Yes the weather was wet, but the hardy Mooloo Meanderers got out and showed the grit. Well done to all. Coming up in June is our AGM, several positions will be available on the Committee. If you have something to add please stand for election. I hope you are all keen to participate in several important Club Rallies namely the Vintage Venture on 16 May and our Clubs Double 50 Rally at Queen’s weekend. M o to r c y c le Motorcycle Report May Well it was good to finally get our 2020 Rally that had so much work put into it, completed this year. We would like to thank all those who helped. The back up team of Graham and Pat, marshals Andy and Bryce, Steve and Cazna, Trish for doing all the typing, our Sponsors for all the prizes, and Bob for doing such an excellent summery of the event. Movie Night @ The Club The popcorn was dished out the ice creams all rolled and the chocolate dip heated up. Everything was set for a good night. At the last meeting Graeme Luxford suggested we have a movie night and show the 1953 movie Genevieve. I have to admit at the time I was a bit “hesitant” on the movie choice, but my concern was soon put to rest as the movie got underway. A good movie for male chauvinists and veteran car lovers alike. Considering the cold wet weather it was rewarding to see the clubroom full with the “regular” club members and quite a few new members dotted amongst the crowd. Talking of new members. To all new members and old members alike give some thought to attending a club night. I know, I know, for new members you can feel like a fifth wheel, but hang in there. A bit of advice. If you want to feel like you are part of the club put your hand up to help with the cup of tea. Trust me, it’s the quickest way to become “acquainted” with everyone. See you at the next club night?? So what’s the next movie??? 7

The Waikato Branch announces formation of an Early Eras motoring group

—The Venturers— to cater for the special requirements of vehicles produced in the early days of motoring, and their enthusiasts.

Venturers Report for May 2021 Well, despite the rather modest numbers that made the start line, the Venturers Tour to the Waitomo region worked out very successfully. A range of different vehicles made the trip, some well over a hundred years old and others merely eighty! Sort of makes you feel young again, doesn’t it. Read Robert Johnson’s report in this issue of Venture to see how we got on over the weekend. The annual branch Vintage Rally in mid-May is coming up fast, so get your entry in soon. This is a great event to get involved with. Charge up the grease gun and check off the car’s vitals or you’ll likely miss a heap of good motoring. Following only three weeks later, in early June, is the Branch Double Fifty Rally where you can venture out again, Venturers. You can do competition for the various trophies if the fancy takes you, or otherwise just enjoy the motor touring and social activities. After this, the winter weather tends to bite hard so we will be looking for something a little less adventurous to stoke the fires of early era motoring interest. Brake Bleeding Fault Finder If you’re having trouble bleeding your classic car brakes, there’s a possibility that the nipples are open too far. A quarter-turn should be more than enough. If it’s still drawing air through the threads in preference to drawing fluid out of the system, then the fluid isn’t able to flow freely from the reservoir. If you open each of the bleed nipples with nothing connected to them, you should get a free flow of fluid pushed by gravity alone. If the fluid makes no effort to escape, then the system is constricted in some way. The most common brake bleeding problem is that the piston of the master cylinder doesn’t fully return when the brake is off. This can be caused by a lack of free-play between the pedal pushrod and the cylinder (allow about 1mm) or by rust or debris building up at the open end of the cylinder. Only when the piston is fully ‘home’ is there direct communication between the reservoir and the master cylinder. The other constriction commonly found is in old flexi-hoses that have closed up inside. Inspect them closely and replace as a matter of course if they’re long in the tooth. 9

Mooloo Meander 2021 Watery sunshine would best describe what greeted the sixty entrants for this year’s Mooloo when they rose from their beds on Saturday morning 10 th April. A couple probably took one look at the forecast and went back to bed, but the rest are made of sterner stuff, packed the ‘wet gear’ and made for the clubrooms rendez-vous. And what a great site they all made with their varied and colourful bikes lined up around the property. Our club facilities impress all our visitors, so it’s a shame our parts-shed and library aren’t opened on such occasions with so many enthusiasts, both visitors and members, on hand to enjoy them. A briefing about ever-present dangers while riding on country lanes followed a period of respectful silence in memory of Les Diez, one of the Mooloo Meander founding group who had such foresight some 27 years ago. One wonders whether they could have anticipated the success all these years later of their early enthusiasm for what is now the pre-eminent annual classic motorcycling event in the region. Paul Whitehead was first away on his diminutive 1924 Round-tank BSA, followed at half minute intervals by a veritable flood of machines, Nortons, Enfields, Triumphs, Hondas, Ariels, Velocettes, BSA’s, BMW’s and the rest, all making for Karapiro and the open roads beyond. The Mooloo is not named a Meander for nothing – we wandered and meandered our way south past the hydro lakes to Arohena, twisting and turning to Wharepapa and Wharepuhunga before the first of the light rain appeared on the horizon. Korakonui and Tokanui were behind us before it came back again, this time in earnest, but fortunately our lunch venue at the Empson place on Pokuru Road arrived in time to protect most from the worst of it. And what a great lunch it was too – we’ll be going back there again just for those filled rolls and the rest of the goodies I expect! Thanks Chris and Helen for your generous hospitality, those lunch preparations as well as the great collection of cars in the sheds. But, perhaps seeming most impressive of all to watchful visitors, the aeroplane propellor in lieu of an air-conditioning unit in the barn! The homeward leg was a wet affair, except for the victims of motorcycling’s dark lord of breakdowns, some of whom expired before they even got to Cambridge. They all secured a ride in the two back-up vehicles. A great job done by those support people too, thank you. For some, the social side is the best part of this annual event and this was well covered by a welcoming nosh at the Prince Albert on Friday evening, followed by a great buffet in the clubrooms on Saturday evening to precede prizegiving. Friday’s arrangement is appreciated by our visitors but could be better supported by members coming along to welcome them. A great number of the entrants and partners do however normally attend the Saturday dinner and this year was no exception. The food prepared was first class and more than adequate Margaret Roberts of Classique Catering has been our Mooloo ‘go-to’ caterer for many years now and has never let us down. The Mooloo event has a rather mysterious way of finding winners for the various awards without any clear effort on the entrants’ part. So, in the winners enclosure this year the overall award goes to our visitor from Auckland riding a Velocette, Jeremy Lambert, whilst the Best Placed Waikato Branch member was Robert Simpson riding an Indian machine. For next year, Robert has the honour of plotting the course if he so wishes and will need to check out some great local roads to best the route organised this time by Stan Richardson. 12

Stan and Peter did a great job to get everything updated and organised from the debris of the Covid affected event planned for last year, but which was cancelled at the 11 th hour.

SEE NOMINATION FORMS ON PAGE 27 Incorrect Email Addresses? I have just sent out the April Venture and had two of the emails returned with incorrect email addresses. If you change your email address can you please inform the club of the change. In the future I presume that more and more of the correspondence will be via email and having the correct email is vital for a hassle free system. I was talking to the club Secretary recently (Heather) and she was saying that when she sends out emails she always gets some back which then creates a problem. She has to then contact the member via phone and request an up to date email address which takes time if you have 3 or 4 to do and people don’t answer their phone etc. Please, the next time you change your email address simply send an email to Heather informing her of such and she will alter all the paperwork concerned. 28th VINTAGE VENTURE RALLY WAIKATO 2021 The Waikato Branch of the VCC NZ invites you to take part in this years Vintage Venture Rally to be held on the 16th May 2021. This year’s rally will be starting from 49 Arapuni Rd, Arapuni. South Waikato. Rally is approximately 80 miles, with toilet and fuel stops along the way. Bring a picnic lunch and a chair . There is cafes available for lunch if you wish. After lunch a bit of an explore returning to Arapuni . The route is a mix of country and sealed back country roads – there is one steeper long descent which hasn’t phased our Chairman in his ‘Model T’ in planning discussions

GENERAL INVITATION As well as this Vintage Venture Rally, the V&VCC (Waikato) also holds the following additional calendar events to which VCC members from all branches are cordially invited. See your Branch Secretary for date and entry details and an entry form. Veteran Rally - held in November each year; this is our special day for all of the early era enthusiasts to get together. Swap Meet - held in November each year at Karapiro Domain, in conjunction with the Waikato Vintage Tractor & Machinery Club. This event is one of the best on the calendar for vintage and classic vehicle enthusiasts and restorers alike. Ladies Rally - includes a well supported dress related competi-tion mixed crews can also participate (with limited eligibility). Post-Vintage Rally - held in early October each year; a popular competitive road rally for PV, PW, P60 and P80 vehicles built between 1932 and 1981. Mooloo Meander - held in March/April each year; a popular and relaxed meet for motorcyclists on two or three wheels. Double Fifty Rally - held on Queens Birthday weekend each year; our major competitive calendar event for the year for all VCC qualifying classes of vehicles. Blue Smoke & Pedals - a relaxed event for mopeds, scooters and ultra lightweights held in a mid-summer picnic atmosphere. Kairangi Hillclimb - a 2.1 kilometre course on sealed surface catering for all VCC classes of vehicles, held in mid-September.

The VCC 2021 National Motorcycle Rally that Wasn’t First it was on, then it was off and then it was on again! The planned March bi-annual National VCC Motorcycle Rally in the Wairarapa was all set to go when a Covid-19 move to Level 3 was announced for Auckland and to Level 2 for the rest of the country. Motorcycle members so look forward to these events where they can get together with their comrades from around the country, that the disappointment within the membership when cancellation was announced was almost palpable. Within days of the cancellation, plans had been set in motion to have an informal rally anyway which would come under the size limits applicable if these were still in force. In the event, fully half the original entry turned up, so the organising branch made the planned rally routes and visits available. To welcome their visitors, some social evenings were also put on by the Wairarapa Branch for the weekend and at the conclusion of the touring days later in the week. Jillian and I had planned to take our two rally bikes by van and ride another, with accommodation in a pre-paid B&B which could not be cancelled. Dropped the plan to ride one down there and went on four wheels via Napier with the Honda and Norton aboard to enjoy a relaxed meet-up with motorcycling friends. Other Waikato branch members in attendance were Kelvin & Jacqui Mitchell, Wayne & Sue Bennett and Steve & Jo Walter Friday’s social at the Masterton Club brought us all together to learn what was in store – rally run to Martinborough on Saturday, rest day on Sunday as the gymkhana, show and swapmeet were all cancelled, then three planned days of touring and visits to follow. The run from Masterton to Martinborough for lunch via scenic roads, which a stranger might never have guessed were present in the Wairarapa region, was very pleasant and without incident, followed by a BBQ at the expansive property of the branch chairman, Willie James. Sunday was spent exploring the local towns of Carterton, Featherston and Greytown where Whangarei Robert and I visited a local racer’s workshop while the girls did the shops. The memorabilia on show in the workshop was extraordinary, including all his family members’ old competition ‘bikes mounted on the walls – some of these dating back to the 1920’s! Tour days went to Castlepoint (with the chance to walk up to the lighthouse), Dannevirke to visit a couple of collections of off-road and farm bikes, trucks, etc. and finally to Lake Ferry for lunch with a side trip to Ngawi where the fishing boats are launched and recovered from the surf by bulldozer! This last is a quite lovely ride – a 35km side trip each way and also brings you to the location of the Cape Palliser lighthouse for those still relishing a climb up the 251 steps! Only the Tuesday Dannevirke trip produced unpleasant weather in the afternoon, the rest of the time being in great biking conditions. A final farewell dinner, at the Masterton Club again, brought our ‘non-rally’ to an end until the next one in Southland, in conjunction with the Burt Munro event in 2023. Some were heard to say that the informal week’s fellowship was almost better than a proper rally! Homeward over the winding Pahiatua Track road as well as the scenic and narrow Highway 54 via Kimbolton (great café here), to a stopover in Taupo for a weekend of racing, made for a great break away and plenty of good memories. Three entrants in the inaugural Early Era Venturers Tour, Terry and Bev Pidduck (Locomobile), Cazna and Steve Payne (Triumph) and Robert and Jackie Johnson (Crossley), departed from the Top Pub in Morrinsville early afternoon on Friday 26 th March. We motored country back roads to Tamahere, where another four entrants joined—Paul and Louise Clark (Model A), Bob and Jillian Hayton (Dodge DA), Roy Rowe and Trevor Appleby (Ford Model 18 Coupe), and Terry Lowe and Alan Sharp (Buick 2 cyl). From here the route took us through Pirongia to Waitomo Caves Village which was to be our base for the weekend. Further entrants, Les and Lesley Webster (Model A) Reece and Sue Burnett (Darracq), Neil Dobson and Kristie Martin (Model T), Graeme and Janet McKenzie (Model T), Phill and Daphne Ward (Model A), joined the tour here, some staying for the weekend and others just participating on the Saturday. Most of the Venturers who were staying at Waitomo gathered at the Tomo Bar and Eatery for a most enjoyable evening and meal with plenty of talking, before retiring in preparation for Saturdays Tour. To cater for various capabilities and desires of vehicles and owners, Bob and Jillian had cleverly planned 3 routes, arranging for a common meeting place for lunch, after which we all travelled to Richard and Yvonne Le'Fleming's place outside Otorohanga to view their extensive collection of farm implements / museum. Starting the Lanz Bulldog proved popular, with no volunteers to swing the steering wheel cum starting handle! These 2-stroke, single cylinder German tractors would run on just about anything. Richard was able to slow it down till it almost stopped, then with a deft blip on the throttle had it running in reverse! There was plenty to attract everyone. Sadly Terry had gearbox issues with the Locomobile and had to withdraw after only a few miles. The Buick 2 cyl completed the route in style, not having had any sort of a run for over 20 years, and Roy Rowe had his recently imported Ford Model 18 V8 Coupe out on its first outing in NZ. A real highlight of the weekend was the dinner followed by a most ingenious, and enjoyable creative activity. Paul Clark talked about the history of the drawing in the logo and how it was loosely based on a Model T, and then Bob handed out plastic bags containing a most amazing collection of bits and pieces, which we were to use to make our version of the car in question. Bob and Jillian must have had a lot of fun in the 2 dollar shops! Well, for half an hour there was almost silence as creative minds got to work, and appreciative laugh-

ter when the finished masterpieces were displayed. There was a return route back to Morrinsville organised for those who wanted it with people turning off as they neared their homes. We left the route at Fencourt and returned home to Matamata. After having solved Friday's fuel vaporisation problems by lagging the pipes with aluminium foil, we completed the weekend, covering 234 thoroughly enjoyable scenic miles. “The Ladies Gathered “

I think I can say, a great day was had by all.

The theme of the day was “The Mad Hatters Tea Party” and I must say, all that attended got behind the theme with a great deal of imagination and enthusiasm. I would like to have the space to put all the costume photo’s in the mag but alas, that’s not possible, so please forgive me if your costume is not presented. The ladies had a high tea lunch at the club before they started on the hour long rally around Cambridge. The run was based around visiting many of the magnificent old Villas dotted throughout the town. In their travels they were participating in a poker run, so at various points they were instructed to collect a playing card. Best hand wins a prize. At the day Cambridge was in the middle of an Art Festival and it was suggested the ladies stop and partake in the festival for an hour or so if they wished.. They were instructed to return to the club by about 3pm for afternoon tea and prize giving. It was suggested that next year it be called, “The Ladies Day Out” . It will be a day for the ladies rather than for the old cars. Modern cars will be accepted. It will be about the Ladies having a great day out, all created by the men in the club.
