Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Another very busy month has just gone , as we feel a tinge of winter in the air. We spent a bit of time at the “Beach Hop” recently . If you haven't been I would recommend going along and soaking up the atmosphere. Great! Last weekend we had scrutinising for the Soap Box Derby carts . It was great to see everyone’s interpretation of the base kit bits supplied and what emerged at the end . It will be great to see the fun event at the Cambridge mains street on Anzac Day in conjunction with the Cycling Festival. The AGM is set for June please take a moment to read what the remits are . Also consider becoming a Committee Member. Entries are a little slow for our premier event the Double 50 Rally . Please get you entries in to Glenys and Bob so we can make this a successful Rally. Have a Happy Easter and don’t eat all the chocolate (at least not in one attempt).

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter Hi Folks I am writing this just before we head south for the South Island Easter Rally. Bronya’s Boot sale has been and gone, not many people I am told but with two enquiries for membership that’s a successful event, well done and thanks Bronya. As I won’t be here for the Soap Box Derby I hope all has gone well and all 40 carts turned up for the event. The Twilight Rally on the 19th May organised by Graham and Heather Boswell is an easy going event ideal for new members so hope to see you there. Double fifty is our major rally of the year and this year is a great run over roads I have never been on and I can guarantee you will enjoy it. Glenys is waiting with bated breath to record your entry so if you haven’t already done so get your get your entry in A.S.A.P. June is A.G.M. time and this year your club will need a Chairman, a Secretary and a Treasurer so if you think you could do any of these jobs please put your hand up. Take care out there. Tony.

THERE WAS AN INTERESTING DISPLAY OF BIKES AND A BEAUTIFUL MINT BRIGHT YELLOW VETERAN FORD MODEL “T”, WITH A NUMBER OF OTHER PROJECTS ON THE GO. THANKS TO JOHNNY SIMPSON FOR LETTING US USE HIS PROPERTY – VERY MUCH APPRECIATED . INTERESTING READING THE “PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE” FROM DIANE QUARRIE IN BEADED WHEELS RE CLUB RUNS AND POOR ATTENDANCE BUT MIDWEEK RUNS ARE GAINING ATTENDANCES. I TEND TO AGREE AND OUR CLUB NEEDS TO THINK ABOUT THIS. ONLY THE DIE HARDS WANT THE SAME OLD, SAME OLD TO CONTINUE BUT THAT’S NOT WHAT THIS MOVEMENT IS ALL ABOUT. Motorcycle
Our 26th Mooloo Meander was well attended with 63 entries and a further 2 people asking if they could join their friends who had entered. They had heard how good this events was, could not really say no. The Friday night meal and get together was held as last year at the Price Albert Pub in Cambridge. Jon had plotted the morning run of 71 miles arriving at Te Mata school for lunch using many interesting roads. The run in the afternoon back to Cambridge was via Te Pahu along the very scenic Grove Road. The Saturday night meal and prize giving was held at the club rooms where 60 people were catered for by Classique Caters, Margaret always does a great job. This rally like all others cann’t function without help. Thanks go to Jon for plotting the rally, Murray and Paul for marshalling, Graham and Pat for backup, Andy, Ann and the other Ladies for teas and the setting up of the tables etc, our sponsors Castrol Oil, Ryco Hydraulic Hoses, Ian Walker, Blackwood Motor Cycles, Bridgestone Tyres and Chemz. Don’t forget our social run on the 12th May, unfortunately I will be away but Neville and Cheryl have very kindly arranged a run, meet at the club rooms at 10.30- 10.45 go for a ride ending up at their place for a sausage sizzle lunch, sounds good. 2019 Report
Members have shown our Club is on track with the recent motoring events offered - Vintage Venture, Wednesday Wander to Waihi, Ladies Rally and our Moo-Loo Meander. They were all so well supported and a credit to those who organised them. The Committee is planning next year’s Calendar of Events. I remain mindful of my survey’s opinions and will pass them onto Committee. The main thoughts that came through were too many events and very little support for competitive rallying. Things always change and usually come in 7 year cycles, but tradition is always important as well. With this thinking, I will suggest to Committee that there be only 3 competitive events – Veteran, ‘All-Comers’ (but 2 rally routes - fast and slow) and our Double 50. Our Motorcycle and Wednesday Wanders operate as a section of our Club and will decide what they wish for (events and dates). I have contacted Peter (Motorcycle) and will talk with Andy (Wednesday Wanders). As there was little support for a Training Day, it was cancelled. If there is a newer member, or any other who would like to take part in competitive rallying and needs guidance, please contact your Club Captain. They could perhaps arrange a buddy system or a crewing part as an introduction to rallying. They would also know members who would be pleased to go through old rally instructions and explain terms and tricks. Some comments in my survey also mentioned our Club could be of more help to those with restorations. The Club Captain would not know how to be of assistance but would be able to research someone who could be. At the end of my notes I have covered progress and thinking regarding our proposed project shed, hoist and other equipment. The reason I have done this is that our Committee suggested it be included in my survey. As the concept received good support, I became involved, and those who supported the concept did just that and those who didn’t, gave reasons. I covered that the Health and Safety Act did not apply to the concept. I wrote two draft plans, Safety and Management, for consideration and invited members to talk to Andy or Paul with any input or concerns. I also covered a previous General Meeting approval for a project shed. The Notice of Motion to be presented to our AGM is to get started at a conservative cost. Committee can consider further building improvements should members think they would be worthwhile. We are limited to size and where the building can go. Terry 6

LADIES RALLY
Dressed in our extravagantly elegant feather hats styled by an illustrious milliner, we were served a flat white and a cappuccino at the starting point that set us up for the adventure ahead. With no silent checks, no timing and unambiguous instructions, we were free to catch up on all the gossip. True to the organiser’s words, the instructions were straight forward with no tricks. The route took us through the lovely rolling countryside south east of Te Awamutu, stopping at the very tempting ‘Interiors Barn’, then on to Maungatautari Sanctuary Mountain where we ate our lunch. We then set forth on the intrepid journey to the Lookout. This is where a few of us had a problem!! The heart was strong but the body was weak! Looking at the gradient that could be seen from the carpark was enough to deter quite a few of the ladies. The remainder either managed to make it to the Lookout, or gave up on the way. Both of us were successful in the climb, but it is not something that will be repeated in a hurry. After the group was gathered together, we took off, heading towards Arapuni and Lake Karapiro. Another stop was planned at Lexington Park, where we visited the art studio and extensive garden, and had a peek at their B & B accommodation. A lovely property with a huge garden, stables and tennis court. From there, it was a short trip into Cambridge and back to the Club Rooms where the men had assembled the most impressive afternoon tea. Beautiful delicate sandwiches, sausage rolls, and delicious cakes and slices, all served with fresh cups of tea and plunger coffee. The questionnaire, all about birds, given to us at the start kept our brains working overtime. Just how many feathers does a canary have, and who on earth could prove it, anyway! However, this was won by Tracey Hayward and her sister. An admirable effort. The best hat was won by Kathryn Parsons, even though she had thought she may be disqualified for making additions to her incredible hat whilst on the route. A huge vote of thanks must be made to the organising team, Bob and Graham, the marshals, and afternoon tea organisers, who really did us ladies proud. A perfect LADIES RALLY. MGBGT 10
Joke Several men are in the locker room of a golf club. A cellular phone on a bench rings and a man engages the hands-free speaker function and begins to talk. Everyone else in the room stops to listen. MAN: "Hello" WOMAN: "Hi Honey, it's me. Are you at the club?" MAN: "Yes." WOMAN: "I'm at the shops now and found this beautiful leather coat. It's only $2,000; is it OK if I buy it?" MAN: "Sure, go ahead if you like it that much." WOMAN: "I also stopped by the Lexus dealership and saw the new models. I saw one I really liked." MAN: "How much?" WOWAN: "$90,000." MAN: "OK, but for that price I want it with all the options." WOMAN: "Great! Oh, and one more thing... I was just talking to Janie and found out that the house I wanted last year is back on the market. They're asking $980,000 for it." MAN: "Well, then go ahead and make an offer of $900,000. They'll probably take it. If not, we can go the extra eighty-thousand if it's what you really want." WOMAN: "OK. I'll see you later! I love you so much. MAN: "Bye! I love you, too." The man hangs up. The other men in the locker room are staring at him in astonishment, mouths wide open. He turns and asks, "Anyone know whose phone this is?"

Wednesday Wander NOTE Change of date NOW MAY 22nd Due to bookings, the May Wednesday Wander to be held on 22 May is a run to the Visitor Centre for the 15 km Huntly section of the Waikato Expressway currently under construction and due for completion in 2020. A video presentation will be followed by an hour long return chauffeur driven drive along the entire 15 km length of the haul road from SH1 Ohinewai to SH1 Taupiri. The number of passengers the contractors can provide vehicles and staff for is limited, so first in, first served. For a bite to eat afterwards, I suggest lunch at the Riverside Cafe at Huntly. VCC Roycroft Trophy 2019 Gone, it seems, are the days when the Roycroft Trophy meeting could fill a weekend at Hampton Downs, with a cast of dozens and the roar and thunder of massed herculean engines. Nowadays the Trophy is awarded in the Hooters Vintage Race Series, just one act entrenched in the HRC ‘Legends of Speed’ series of meetings held in the North Island and organised by Waitemata Branch of the Vintage Car Club in conjunction with HRC. If you want to experience again the sight and sound of vintage saloons, specials, open sports cars or early Formula Junior machines you need to get along to one of their meetings. Some of our own branch members are still active in this series including Joe Bruntlett, Geoff Wilson and Wayne Hayward. My particular interest, the Formula Juniors fielded several racers this year including the Volpini and Elva which have both appeared in the past at our Kairangi Hillclimb, and both now in new hands I believe. There were also a Stanguellini, Lola and an Autosud amongst the field of other famous names. Graeme Brayshaw had the Norton engined Cooper 500 there, a past winner at Ardmore, together with Geoff Wilson’s smart green MG TC which are both also past competitors at Kairangi. The ‘Legends’ is a two day event, but the Hooters Series only featured on the second day. Racing proper got underway on Sunday 24th March in perfect conditions with three rounds of Hooters Vintage six lap races scheduled following a qualifying round, and then a trophy series. Various classes of BMW racing, historic sports cars, muscle cars, Formula Fords and the impressive Formula 5000 machines of the past created quite a spectacle for enthusiasts, who had open access to the pits and garages throughout the day. Inevitably the Formula Juniors filled the leader board in the Hooters races, with Paul Halford in the Autosud improving in round 2 to head first round winner Roger Herrick (Lola) who had reached the chequered flag after producing the fastest lap of the meet at 1m 22.8s. Paul held on again in round 3 to head Michael Sexton (Gemini) with the Lola third. The Vintage Class field was consistently headed by Brian King (Jaguar Special), Geoff Wilson (MG-TC) producing some solid mid-field results. Rain clouds appeared in mid afternoon which saw slower times for the trophy race field reduced to just ten cars. Paul Halford took the win and the Formula Junior Trophy over Gary Langsford (Elva) by less than a second, followed home by Craig Laing (Buckler Climax) who did enough to be awarded the Roycroft Trophy. Thus ended a nostalgic trip down memory lane before the opportunity disappears forever to see these great cars of the past perform as intended. Bob H

A mid-November opening is anticipated. It is planned that the Mansfield Picnic will be held 2019 in the new garden, but there will be no vehicle access. VCC National Day ‘Daffodil Rally for Cancer’ is being organized together with HCC and Tom Andrews of the Classic Car Museum.
