Editor’s Snippet Articles Please.
Putting the magazine together is time consuming in itself, but
getting articles from individuals that may have participated in an event is the most difficult thing of all. If I don’t attend an event, then I don’t know who was there. If I don’t know who attended the event, I then have to spend time on the phone trying to track someone down that may have participated. Even if I manage to track someone down I then have to persuade that individual/s to write about it. Getting photo’s is even more difficult, although I don’t know why, as the modern phone takes a good photo. If you are entering an event and would like to write about it then please approach the plotter or organiser and let them know you are willing to do an article. If you aren’t up to doing some photos can you please keep an eye out for someone that is taking photo’s and get them to send some on to me. If you could manage the above it would be much appreciated by all the readers and myself. The only criteria is that I would like the article emailed to me so that I can cut and paste it directly into the magazine. I’m sorry, but I haven’t got the time to type out a two or three page hand written article. Many thanks.

Ch a irm a n ’s Ch a tter Well, here we are in March already, it will be a busy month. especially for Marcia and I, we are having a week’s holiday in Paihia at the Busby Manor Timeshare, plus with all the club activities I think we will need a holiday. My summer holiday was not quite as good as I was hoping. While helping Ian Patton mow his Subdivision in Matamata, I had a small accident with the ride on mower. End result was I didn’t spend as much time at Matarangi as I would have liked. However, my back is improving so that is good news. But please don’t ask me for guidance on using a ride on mower. The March executive Meeting is being held in Wellington on 20 th March, Dave Nordelll and I are attending. There is one notice of motion which is to be voted on, this has been emailed out to all members. Please read it carefully and we will discuss at the next club night. The notice of motion is to move forward the process of online membership applications which is better suited to todays younger people. If there are any matters that you wish to have discussed at the Executive Meeting please contact Dave or Myself. Remember it is the Executive which runs our club. The Executive consists of one Delegate from each branch and the Management Committee, who are elected by the members prior to the National AGM. I would like all members to start having a serious look at the “VERO INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL OF HISTORIC MOTORING”`. This event which was postponed this year due to the dammed Covid Virus is now back on in January 2022. Keep the dates of the 16 th to 21 st January free for a great experience in New Plymouth. I am very confident that Greg Terrill and his team will put on a great event. Marcia and I have attended the last three International rallies in Invercargill, Whanganui, and Dunedin and we have really enjoyed them all. The event in New Plymouth has one huge benefit to us here in the Waikato, it is “sooooo” close. It’s only a short drive to New Plymouth to enjoy what will be a fantastic week of motoring fun. So, start booking your Accommodation and organize a week off work, it’s no problem for me as it is in the School Holidays. You are all aware that “Vero” are a major sponsor for the VCC and that your branch receives commission payments from Vero, so I would ask that all members consider Vero when looking at Insurance, not only for vehicles but for any type of insurance. Remember that because of Vero the entry fee for National and International events are kept lower and that your VCC subscriptions and branch continued overleaf 4
levies are also kept lower. Recently here in Matamata a certain Insurance Company closed its office down, well that annoyed me so as policies came due, I contacted Vero. They were very pleasant and efficient to deal with and I was very pleased with their quotes. So, all I can say is give them a go, you might be surprised. Please remember all the branch activities coming up, especially the Ladies Rally. Remember Ladies if you don’t feel comfortable driving an older car you can come in your modern. We want to see you at the Mad Hatters Tea Party. Please be aware that the Covid Pandemic is not over yet. There are still cases out there, so stay safe, be careful, use the tracer app and sign in, and be kind to all round you. We don’t want to go back into a major lockdown. March 2021 2021 has got off to a great start. The February Club night speaker was Brad Pierse. Brad is developing a new business collecting tyres, shredding them and turning them into Equestrian exercise area surface. At present they are processing 1000 tyres per day. We will try and organise a visit to this operation based in Queen St, Cambridge at a later date, maybe on a Wednesday Wander. Next month’s club night will feature Reece and Sue Burnett with their display/ presentation of period clothing for your vehicles with suggestions on how to DIY for many things. We are also bringing Members the opportunity to set up a small stall in the Club Rooms to sell clothing and accessories. Terry Pidduck is organising a ride for the Folk at Oakland Retirement Village on Friday 11.00am, 26 February. Terry requires a few vehicles, if you can spare a little time can you please give Terry a call on 027 2726319 Our Ladies Rally is coming up on the 21st March. The Organisers assure me that this will be a great day for the Ladies. The theme is Mad Hatters Tea Party. So Ladies get involved, get your outfit sorted and your Entry Form filled out and returned. Visit Waikato VCC web page for an entry form or click on the link below. On Queens Birthday Weekend Waikato VCC presents the Double 50. This is our premier event so accordingly we would like to see a good number of Club Members dusting off the Rally skills. Even if Rallying is not your thing consider doing the Rally as a Tour. It will be a chance to get your cars out and show them off as a working reminder of days before carbon emissions and E-vehicles. Our Shed project is still not started. We are having a few queries from Waipa Council regarding siting of the shed. We are having a meeting this week coming, so should know at little more after this meeting. M o to r c y c le Blue Smoke and Pedals Report We had a good turn out for the Blue Smoke and Pedals held on Sunday the 10th February, which included some from Auckland, which was good to see them along. Terry and his team laid out 6 tests for every one to do. After we had our BBQ, Steve and Cazna took those that had road legal bikes on a short road run. We picked 5 place getters based on how they did in the 6 tests. Motor cycle section Continued: As mentioned last month the entry forms for the Mooloo are in this Venture could these please be returned asap as this greatly helps with the numbers for booking meals etc. We will again be having the Friday night meal at the Prince Albert and Classique Caterers are doing the Saturday night meal. So as to ensure that your bikes are in top condition for the Mooloo and the National M/C Rally, for those that are going, we are having a run on Sunday 7th of March. The club rooms will be opened at 10.00 leaving at about 11.00 for a run to the Whatawhata Pub for lunch. Them we will visit Ken Haine’s home which is a short distance away to view his collection of vehicles and memorabilia. About all for now, safe riding, especial those going to the National Rally Peter
February Club Night Guest Speaker We have excellent guest speaker throughout the year and for their participation we are truly grateful but occasionally there is a speaker that really surprises you and the February speaker filled that criteria. Bozy touched on it in his report. The guest speakers was Brad Pierse who put a lot of money on the line to purchase a car tyre shredding machine from China. I gather Brad and his partner went to China to keep an eye on the manufacture of the shredder. He said they were concerned about the quality of the machine when he saw one of the Chinese welders weld by putting his hand over his eyes and then welded (no welding mask anywhere to be seen). The Waikato Branch announces formation of an Early Eras motoring group
—The Venturers— to cater for the special requirements of vehicles produced in the early days of motoring, and their enthusiasts. THE VENTURERS
Our first event, a long weekend sociable tour 26-28 th March to and around the Waitomo region is primed and ready to run. For the fortunate few, this is on the way to the VCC National Vintage Rally in the South Island at Easter, so a good way-point for that too. Entry forms (together with a list of local accommodation options) have gone out to all branch members that are on our Venturers group email list, so if you would like to consider going along and have not yet received one, get in touch by phone or email to Bob at (07) 856-7238, 027-423-0610 or hayton.rj@gmail.com and set a plan in motion. The by-ways can be a little confusing sometimes, so a full set of clear route instructions will be provided whether you join in our adventure at Morrinsville, Tamahere, Pirongia or Waitomo itself. The return trip will be on mainly quiet back roads again, by way of Te Awamutu and Cambridge back to the start point. At the destination, motoring in three groups will be available to suit you and your vehicle, whether you want near level roads, good scenery or perhaps a little more of a motoring challenge. The social activity is as important as the motoring, so we have included an afternoon visit to a collection of interest to old-iron and rural enthusiasts, as well as time for some informal gatherings and a laid-back group meal on Saturday evening. What more could you ask! See you there! 4 people died in a car wreck. Before they got to Heaven God offered them one wish each because they had died in a tragic way. The first lady was obsessed with her looks, so she asked to be beautiful and God granted her the wish. The next person didn’t know what to wish for so she wished for the same thing. The guy in the very back was laughing and having a grand old time. God then got to the person before the last and she said the same thing she wished to be beautiful. When God got to the last person, he thought long and hard and finally wished them all to be ugly again.

What Sue and Reece Burnett don’t know about vintage clothing isn’t worth knowing about. They are our March club night guests and will tell you what to wear from nickers to nighties and furs to footwear and beyond so that you will have the knowledge to be one of the best dressed. Attention Attention Attention Attention Attention If you have any “retired” art deco wear that you would like to sell/exchange then please bring them along on the night. There won’t be a lot of room to display the saleable art deco wear so please be selective in what you bring along. Make sure you have put your name and a price on your item

In between welding he needed to go to the loo, so the welder stepped back behind a curtain had a pee and 5min later was back to welding with his hand over his eyes. So much for Health & Safety. The shredding machine arrived in one ships container (instead of 5) and it was all in broken bits etc. After kiwi’s put it back together and improved it Brad was in business. He has since purchased 3 more vastly improved shredders and based them across the country (one is even mobile). He has developed a shredded rubber to go on equestrian pavilions along with rubber matting material for various uses. Brad has had many discussions with the government in regards to them handling the many thousands upon millions of tyres sitting around the country. Western Australia has started to add a percentage of fine shredded rubber to their roading material. Apparently it works a treat!! Great use for the rubber and makes the road an extremely quiet ride. So what happens to the wire in the tyre. Well, as the tyre is being shredded it chops up the wire. The shredded rubber is then heated and three strong magnets withdraw the wire from the shredded pieces of rubber. The wire is then sold to the steel mill. What a business!! Your material is basically unlimited and people that have the material will do anything to give it to you (I gather?) to solve their problem. I’m sure the council at Amberley would do anything to get rid of their burning tyre pile eh?? If you get a chance to see the plant working I suggest you take the opportunity. 9

The Waikato Branch of the VCC of NZ cordially invites you to take part in this year’s Ladies Rally, to be held on Sunday 21st March 2021. The rally will start at Waikato VCC Clubrooms The intention of this year’s rally is to embrace the theme which is THE MAD HATTERS TEA PARTY. Arrive at the clubrooms for a lovely High Tea lunch at the club. Then depart the club for a moderate length rally with creative activities along the way. Finish at the clubrooms for prize giving Come dressed to recreate the theme of the Mad Hatters Tea party Lunch, and afternoon tea will be provided. PROGRAMME 12 noon Arrive at the Clubrooms 1.30pm First car away. The rally will finish at the Waikato Branch clubrooms in Cambridge at approximately 3.00pm where you will have afternoon tea and prize giving. ACCOMMODATION Rally entrants are asked to make their own accommodation arrangements. REGULATIONS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7.
Only ALL-FEMALE crews are eligible. At least one member of the crew of each vehicle must be a financial member of the VCC of NZ, or an invited guest. No computerised or electronic aids are to be used. Ladies are welcome to participate on the day in a ‘modern car’, however any ‘modern car’ entrants will not be eligible for any motoring prizes. Traffic regulations should be fully observed throughout the event. Vehicles must be up to the club’s accepted standards. The Rally Organisers reserve the right to disqualify any entrant whose conduct is, in their opinion, likely to bring discredit to the event or the club. Their ruling regarding any matters in respect of the running of the event will be final.

Club Facebook Page Aaron, who has recently created the club Facebook page has had enquiries from members wanting to put cars up for sale, along with various car parts etc. Sorry, but the club Facebook page is not a “marketplace” Facebook page and as such we must turn down enquiries from club members that want to list cars etc etc. Can I recommend you approach a Facebook “marketplace” within your area to list any cars etc that you want to sell via Facebook OR better still, place an advert in this magazine. Road Runners Moto 60 Motoring Next Group Outing Next Outing March 7th As most are aware a motoring group within the club was formed to cater for members cars that were capable of travelling along at a constant 60mph or 100kph. The success of the group was always going to be dependant on members whose cars came into the above criteria to organise runs. The last event, as mentioned in this edition, was to the Thames Airport Wing and Wheels Show. So when is the next scheduled event? 7th March has been earmarked. The run will be to the North of Hamilton and will take approximately an hour to get to the lunch stop. Meet at Gordonton Café carpark (Firepot) at 10.30am with a depart time of 10.45. We will then motor on back roads to the lunchtime destination. It’s a very interesting venue and a place many people, I am sure, do not know it exists. See you at the Firepot Café at Gordonton at 10.30 on Sunday the 7th March. So where to after March? That’s where you come in. If you have a car that suits the group criteria please put your thinking cap on and come up with a run. It’s a non-competitive environment so if you have something in mind that people would like to see and enjoy. Give it some thought.
