Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone What a great spell of weather, what more reason do you need to get the old girl out for a run (your car I mean). There are plenty of events over the next few months as we head into Autumn. There should be one suitable for anyone or any car. Come a join us on a country jaunt somewhere. As I do every so often I am going to throw a plug in for receiving your Venture in an electronic format. It is in full size and full colour. If any one wants to give it a go please email me on waikatovcceditor@gmail.com Several of us are involved with organising the Kairangi Hill Climb which is taking place on Sunday 6th October. If you have got a suitable vehicle please enter this event . There is time to get your project finished for this great event. Hill climbs are an endangered event with Auckland losing their Chelsea Hill climb. If our event does not get good support it will likely go the same way. If any one can help with marshalling etc please contact Andy Hammond. I shall be doing the Clerk of the Course again this year. Till next month

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter HI FOLKS Our February speaker Roger Henerbry’s address covering his life from Ireland to New Zealand to building Caravans to City Councillor to Re Veneering dashboards to President of the local President of Grey Power was well received by all who attended and I noticed that all the Grey Power membership forms were taken up so hopefully Grey Power will have a few more members. Our March speaker is Greg Terrill who will be giving us a run down on the latest developments of the 2021 International Festival of Historic Motoring. Greg should be able to answer any questions you may have so if you’re intending to go this is a talk you won’t want to miss. March is a busy month with the Vintage Venture on the 17 th and entries closing on the 13th so you’ve still got time to enter. On Sunday the 24th March we are having a car boot sale at the Club Rooms so fill up your boot and come along. $10 00 per boot. Times are 8am to 1pm, Kitchen will be open for a cuppa and the parts shed will be open. Book your site before 20th March. Bronya McInally is the Organiser so if you have any queries you can ring Bronya on 0274754259. Sunday 31st March is the Ladies Rally, entries close on Friday 22nd so get those entries into Jillian A.S.A.P. That’s all from me. Be careful out there Tony. 4
S e c r e ta r y SECRETARY’S REPORT Well, the great weather has continued, so hope you all got out in your cars to enjoy it. The Brits at the Beach was a great success with a good turn out and the weather behaved itself this year. Hope everyone who attended had a good time. Closer to home, the AMP show at the Morrinsville show grounds is happening on the 2nd of March so come and enjoy an enjoyable day, Ron Tuck who I’m sure you all know is one of the organisers. Entry forms are available for the following club events: 25th Vintage Venture Rally – 17th March – Entries close 13th March Ladies Rally – Sunday, 31st March – Entries close 22nd March 26th Mooloo Meander on 5th/6th April – Entries close 30th March Other events: North Island Club Captains Tour 2019 – 7th to 13th March 2019 Lake Taupo Country Roads Rally 8th, 9th and 10th March 2019 run by Taupo VCC Whangamata Beach Hop – 27th to 31st March. Now we have started the new year and the Branch is coming up to consider a new committee in June members should a least think about becoming a committee member for the 2019/20 year, I will be standing down for the next year as I have other commitments that need to be attended too, so if you decide you would like to have a go please do so. C lu b C a p t a in Club Captain’s Report Our Club’s efforts to cater for all are going so well. Our Gymkhana was good fun and with a good number of cars and crews competing. The only downside was too much wind for Clubs to put up their gazebos – this detracted from the social side of the picnic, but it was so successful that it was suggested to Committee that the Gymkhana should become an annual event. Our Waitangi Day run was also well supported and I think this could well be a part of each year’s calendar. This would free up a weekend that would otherwise be needed for a Club run. The 3 entry forms in the latest Venture must ensure there is a run coming up for all to enjoy if one missed out on either of the last 2. The Wednesday Wander runs also provide a chance to socialise and give our cars an outing. As well as considering having the Gymkhana (same format) as an annual event, Committee also set a date for our Hill Climb. Both of these events are also so good for members to have a day out, picnic lunch and enjoy watching the competitors. As a spectator at the Gymkhana, watching the ‘hanging out the washing’ challenge, I thought most entrants must surely use the dryer rather than the clothes line. Andy Hammond is going to front the Hill Climb, and would be happy to discuss making it a successful day for both drivers and spectators. As provided for in the rules, a date has been set for a General Meeting to approve the expenditure for a project/equipment shed and hoist. Andy has been meeting with building suppliers and will have estimates available for the meeting. I understand our rules need a tidy up relating to the audit/review of the annual accounts. When the official Notice of Meeting is advertised, I expect there will be a Notice of Motion for the expenditure and another for the rules. Terry 6
Motorcycle Motor Cycle You will have all received the Venture which included the entry form for the Mooloo, should you have any queries please drop me a line. Jon has a very interesting ride plotted so please ensure your entries are sent as soon as possible. This year in an attempt to cut down on postage I used the email addresses of out of town people. This was greatly helped by Graeme Crawley of the Auckland Branch who supplied the ones I did not have. I am please to say, it worked a treat, as I have started to receive entries and thanks for sending them out. I had not been to the Classic m/c racing at Puke for a few years so I went with a neighbour, who is an old Biker. I am trying to get him to purchase one so he can join us. The racing was good and it was great to catch up with a number of old friends from Auckland. You don’t often see two Britten's at the same meeting and as usual they did some demo laps. Good to see Steve Walter out racing he said it was 10 years ago since rode at Puke. We will be having a pre Mooloo social ride on Saturday the 9th March, meeting at the club rooms at 10.00 for coffee and then a ride to a place Murray Mckie has arranged for lunch. This is a chance to make sure your bike is well and truly ready for the Mooloo. That is all at the moment Safe Riding Peter Spiller

Cup of tea and a Chat After over sixty years as members it was lovely to drop in on the Wisemans unannounced and take them for a short drive in the only other Morris 6 in NZ Lots to chat about plate full of biscuits to go with the cup of tea. Great feeling of genuine welcome by great club members. The smile on their face says it all .

Meet at MURRAY OAKS RESERVE, cnr of Horrell /Murray Rds, (under the trees) which is just as you go NE out of Morrinsville on HW26 towards Te Aroha. Be there about 9am for leaving at 9.30am sharp. Bruce and Ruth Shute will met you there with instructions for some nice rural roads to Waihi, where you are booked ia at the Discovery Centrer at Waihi at 11.00am. The 2019 Leadfoot Festival was held on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd February, 2019 at Rod Millen’s farm at Hahei on the Coromandel Peninsular. This is a mile long track that turns and twists and climbs up the hill and through a heavily forested area to the finish. It is an event where you can walk amongst the cars in their pit garages, talk to the drivers and immerse you self in motor racing through the years. This year saw Cars, Drift Cars, Motor Bikes, Quad Bikes and Side Cars all competing against the clock on the mile long course. The oldest vehicle to run was a 1915 American LaFrance Speedster which started life as a Fire Engine in Missouri. It was then converted to a speedster at the end of its Fire Duty, being propelled by its monster 14.5L engine to speeds of over 100mph. While walking in the pits a familiar face appeared. It was Mr Danny Ryan former WVCC member who was driving his 1919 Lancia Kappa Sport (cover picture on this Mag). The car is propelled by a 5L 4 cylinder engine with a 4 speed gearbox. The History of Rod Millen and the Track. Rob has built a driveway to his home which combines many of his favourite challenges of tracks he has raced on throughout his career. It may be only one mile long but the16 corner hill climb still manages to catch out some competitors. Rod Millen is one NZ most driven, innovative and ultimately successful motorsport exports. “A racing legend and all-time nice guy”. 13
Rod developed a reputation as a leader in rally driving in New Zealand in the 1970’s. Rod turned his attention to off road stadium racing series. He dominated the Mickey Thompson off road series- where he became the only driver in the 12 year history of the event to win three consecutive Grand National Sport Truck titles. During his illustrious career, Rod has also driven in several WRC events from 1977 to 1992 and in several Baja 1000 off-road racing events – most recently finishing 2nd in class in 2006.Each time the Leadfoot Festival has been run, Rod has been the man to beat in his monstrously –quick 850 HP Toyota Celica. Last year it was out of action being repaired but this year it it was back and running better than ever. Rod has also entered in his historic 1973 Mazda RX3. Together they achieved a hat- trick of wins in the New Zealand Rally Championship from 1975-1977 and you can be sure that in Rod hands, the Mazda was driven to its absolute limits. The Event A total of 105 cars lined up for the first practice run on Saturday. Some great spectacles emerged as the first run unfolded with those unfamiliar with the course. Cars were divided into categories depend on age. Sunday saw some very credible time, then the Top Ten Shoot-out was held with Alister McRae the winner with a very credible 47 secs in the APL Subaru which an ex Possum Bourne 1998 WRX STI car . In all, a spectacle of Motoring featuring over 100 years of motor sport in New Zealand. This is a great event and one to put on your Calendar for next February. 14
