Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone I hope that all those people that came on our Twilight Run on Sunday enjoyed themselves. People seem to enjoy that type of event rather than hard out Rallies. This brings me to another point as we look forward to what the VVCC might look like in the next 10 years or so ? Several years ago the name of the Veteran & Vintage Car Club was a discussion point. I think that the name maybe deters younger people getting involved. After all when the Club was formed in 1958 a target car was the Model T and this was possibly a 40 years old vehicle. Yet we all drive older cars now, use myself as an example, my 1939 Chev is now 80 years old and my 1955 Chev Belair is 64 years old. The VCC does not regard these as old. The Beaded Wheels is full of really old cars yet the Branch pages show more PWV and P60 cars at their events and Runs. Maybe food for thought? The next event is the Double 50 , I hope you have all entered!!! Then come along to our AGM on June 12th, should be a nice super served, see you then . Until next time keep safe.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter Chairman’s Annual Report It’s time to address the Elephant on the room. Members, your Club is dying. Its dying from lack of enthusiasm, Its dying from lack of participation and now a net loss of 29 members. The Vintage Car Club is on the cusp of following in the footsteps of another old farts club Bowls where the membership became too old and suddenly Bowls clubs started closing down and where a good sized town might have had 3 clubs now it only has one and in some cases none at all left. Some Vintage Car club branches are situated at defunct Bowling clubs. For the Waikato branch the next 10 years will be a critical period as us older members fall off our perch or just get to old to bother being members anymore. So what can we do to attract new members? It won’t be easy with a plethora of other clubs out there all looking for new members and our reputation of being a unfriendly club and now in some circles being called the Wednesday club. If we carry on with the same old same old we most certainly lose the participation of as we saw with the Vintage Venture which only attracted 11 entrants this year. I believe we need a separate Events committee as the main committee is so bogged down with administration that by the time they get around to the events the members are tired and so the events only get a cursory look and we end up with the same old same old. The Events Committee doesn’t need many, maybe the Chairman, Club Captain and 2 or 3 others. If we are going to attract new members we are going to have to make our club more open. If I had my way I would only have 2 major Rallies apart from the veteran and MooLoo Meander. In March I would have a Rally for Vintage, PV and early P.W.V up to 1954 and up to 1500cc as these are only warmed over PVs any way and at Queens Birthday weekend I would hold a 2day touring come time trial event for the faster PWVs to P80s. To both these events I would invite anyone with an eligible Vehicle. There would be a dearer entry fee for none VCC competitors. The parts shed is our major difference between us and other clubs and we should build on this by opening it say every third Sunday of the month, Hours 10am to 2pm and advertise it to the other car clubs in the Waikato something like “Come and search for that elusive part, free tea and coffee. The more people through the door the more chance of getting new members. 4
What about Double 50 I hear you ask? Well Double 50 is slowly dying and it’s getting harder and harder to find somebody to organise it. Perhaps it’s better to kill it and replace it with something new and exciting than let it die of its own accord and replace it with nothing. The proposed new Workshop is I believe sheer folly at this point in time and will do nothing to attract new members and is $80,000.00 that a future Committee may desperately need. Well that is how I see the state of the Club at present and if we continue with the head in the sand approach we will surely follow the way of the Bowling clubs. I sincerely hope that these dire predictions don’t occur and the club finds a way to thrive and prosper into the future. Tony Brierley

S e c r e ta r y SECRETARY’S REPORT Well the end of the car club’s year is almost here with the AGM being next month so hopefully some of you have given some thought to joining the committee. This being my final report I would like to say thanks for your phone calls and contacts it’s been a good year. I hope if you’re going on the Double 50 you have got your entries in as it is only a few weeks away, --- 1st and 2nd of June the program and entry forms are in the May Venture. All the best to you and hope you bring home a trophy. If anyone is looking for other VCC branch newsletters these can be got from the Secretary’s computer, only a phone call away. C lu b C a p t a in Club Captain’s Report – May 2019 Our motoring activities have been quiet since my last notes. Unfortunately none of our entrants for the Soap Box Derby on Anzac Day had VIC’s to prove Club eligibility so they were all on an equal footing. Some of the constructors did the drivers proud with super-looking machines and all the drivers enjoyed the day. I noticed they were all smiles whilst being towed up the hill. Many thanks to Paul Johnson for the wonderful idea; all his hard work in organising everything, together with his helpers on the day. It was a great day. Our Wednesday Wander saw a good turnout and cross section of cars. It was a shorter run to encourage our older cars, but only one vintage class joined in, but it was able to show up the young ones. Also good to see a new member with a low-light Morris Minor to keep Bev’s and my ‘Woody’ company. We were treated to an unusual display of hunting trophies together with some very interesting hunting yarns. Regardless of many members feeling we have too many events and the interest in Rallying is falling, our 50-50 Rally will always be our premier event keeping the Mooloo Meander company. Both these events receive such good support from outside our Branch that we can be proud to keep them going. It must be remembered it’s impossible (I think) not to have events clashing so there will be some folk who will enter say the 50-50 from other Branches, and some Waikato folk who may want to go further afield, rather than a ‘home’ event. This is only good for members to have a choice of motoring areas. We have had a decline in membership last year (27 folk) so we need to sell ourselves as the best motoring club offering every type of motoring events, along with Clubroom/Club nights, Library and Parts Shed. We also need to invite friends who may only be members of ‘One Make Clubs’ to our events. This works well to gain members. These are my last notes, with our AGM on the 12th June. It has been a pleasure to have been ‘of some use’ to our Club during the year. Terry 7
Motorcycle Motor Cycle Section We have received some thank you letters and emails from people who took part in the Mooloo. It is great to receive these and it is thanks to all who helped make this such a successful event. Unfortunately I could not go on the run on 12th May, but Bob tells me that all went well and all had a good time, he commented that the run had the most bends he had ever been on! Many thanks to Neville and Cheryl for arranging this run and for their great hospitality. The clubs event calendar for 2019/20 has now been done which you should receive soon. Our next get together will be on the Sunday the 11th of August more on this later. I have received an email from Martin Spicer who has a link to a short film for those that have never been to the Isle Of Man TT, it shows just how close you can get to the racing action and the reactions of the people. I will send the link to you by email, great viewing. About all for now, Safe Riding Peter

Our Project Shed & Hoist Members will notice the ‘Notice of Motion’ in the last Venture to achieve our Project Shed with a hoist and other equipment that most members don’t own. The motion is to achieve minimum building spec’s, hoist and safety signage to a maximum value. Our new Committee could approve more expenditure for different building spec’s and/or more equipment. Members in the past have wanted, and approved a project shed and Committee members of the day were surveyed with 6 in favour and 2 opposing; yet it never happened. All Clubs, at some stage, have Committee members who feel they should ‘go for’ something that they feel is right for the Club rather than what members want. It is made harder because the management side of the Committee work is what they are being elected to do and the line between management and policy and capital spending is hard to draw. A Project shed with a hoist and other equipment has so much going for it. Project and hoist days will have such a good social side which is so important and will be one more ‘thingy’ that we can add to our Clubrooms, Library and Parts Shed for our members. As well as being something extra for members, the hoist will be a really good draw card to attract new folk to the VCC rather than have them just settle for ‘One Make Clubs’ or other general motoring Clubs. We need to be the best Club around and one of the top VCC Branches for our members. Other than a bar, with a Project shed added to all out motoring and social activities, we surely will be hard to head off. Things will change regarding certifying our cars for the safe use on the road. The Australian rules have a lot of good points, where the Motoring Clubs are responsible for the safe use of members’ cars. The cars are inspected by the Club annually and the criteria are that they are as safe as when they were built. For a Club to have a hoist would make such inspections so much easier. If any members would like to discuss why change will, and must happen, we would be so happy to discuss these issues.

WHEELS IN THE WILDERNESS On 9 a.m. on Friday 12 April, a bunch of 16 intrepid adventurers gathered in Putaruru ready to embark on an epic journey into the wilderness, their destination Lake Waikaremoana in the depths of Te Urewera. The expedition was masterminded by Jeremy and Barbara Brook, but sadly Jeremy was unwell and the Brooks were unable to lead the troops on the big adventure. Luckily Godfrey and Jackie Larsen stepped into the breach and did a great job of leading us safely there and back. The first part of the drive through Rotorua and Murupara was quite straightforward, but once we were on ‘Te Urewera Rainforest Route’, conditions became more challenging. Stretches of sealed road were interspersed with many steep and winding kilometres of what the road signs described as gravel, but which was actually potholes and mud. Dodging the potholes (and the horses and cattle calmly grazing on the roadside) made for an interesting drive. Occasional showers kept the road surface slushy, but also meant there was no dust on the unsealed sections so we could drive in convoy. After a picnic lunch in a bush clearing by a river, we stopped at Ruatahuna for a tour of the new Tuhoe tribal centre. Our guide told us that the impressive office building is built from sustainable and eco-friendly materials, including locally milled timber, bricks made by iwi members from river clay and straw, and carpet made from recycled fishing nets. The complex included a radio studio, a shop, cafe, laundry, and motel units, and further buildings, such as a gallery, are yet to be developed. From here, the “wilderness” part of the tour really set in, with unending vistas of deep valleys and steep bush clad hills, and tantalising glimpses of the lake far below. Writer Jack Lasenby, who based some of his books on his experiences as a deer culler in this area, calls it “the Vast Untrodden Ureweras” and this is certainly an apt description. The condition of the road deteriorated even further, and locals we spoke to at Lake Waikaremoana were amazed that we had ventured over what they referred to as ‘the hillbilly road’ in our old cars. However, vintage cars were built for roads like these, and our 1928 Model A Ford, the oldest car on the run, took them in her stride. Nevertheless, we were relieved to arrive at Lake Waikaremoana and check into our accommodation at the DOC camp, some in lakeview chalets which were very comfortable and well appointed, and others in more basic cabins. After happy hour and a potluck dinner, everyone turned in for an early night. Saturday dawned chilly but sunny, and the morning was spent energetically doing bush walks from the camp to the Aniwaniwa and Papakorito waterfalls. During the afternoon we drove east for a tour of the Tuai Power Station, organised by Bob Hayton. Tuai was built in 1929, the first and largest of three power stations utilising water from Lake Waikaremoana as it flows downhill to10 wards the coast.
Tuai is still generating power ninety years on, but instead of being manned with twelve staff as in the past, it is now run remotely from Turangi. The day culminated with the traditional golf tournament for the coveted green jacket. Since there was no golf course within many kilometres, the tournament consisted of an indoor putting contest and an ingenious golfthemed quiz. (Sample question: Why do golfers carry a spare pair of trousers? Answer: In case they get a hole in one.) Jan Dearlove scored a hole in one with her first putt, but was beaten by one point by Bob Hayton, who scored better on the quiz and got to take home the green jacket. Jackie and her helpers produced a delicious meal seemingly out of nowhere to round off the day. On Sunday morning it was time to turn the wheels out of the wilderness and back to civilisation, after scraping the frost off our cars. Some adventurers retraced the inward route and braved the potholes once again, but the Haytons, Cosseys and Clarks decided to complete the Rainforest Route to the east coast at Wairoa, and then take the long road home via the NapierTaupo road. Many thanks to the Brooks and Larsens for their organisation, and to our fellow explorers for a wonderful weekend.

Veteran and Vintage Car Club (Waikato) Inc First Soap Box Derby review. Anzac day saw the dawning of a Great day with the early remembrance service followed by a Spectacle of Family fun from 11:30 as the Competitors for the Cambridge Cycling Festival and the Soap Box Derby contenders started arriving onto Victoria Square. And what a spectacle it proved to be, with an amazing 32 Soap boxes lined up under the cover of the club and our kind sponsors ITM Cambridge, gazebo’s, the club had a sensational position on the park with great numbers of admirers taking photos and inspecting the ingenious designs, some a bit wacky but all ready to race !! The 4 heats were arranged into age / size and ability order and mustered into position at the start line, looking at the faces it was difficult to discern who was more apprehensive the Racers, designers, builders or the parents just watching on. Soap boxes lined up - Olympic trained pushers in place ( yeah right !!) mainly dads or mums but all adrenalined up waiting for the Start hooter to sound Off they went some fast some slow some needing additional encouragement to make it to the finish line but what a spectacular fun event it proved to be . All four heats completed and the gravity machines were hooked together towed back up the hill in a road train formation by the quad bike rescue team Volunteers ( Quad bikes kindly supplied by Blackwoods of Cambridge) All ready for the final face off Race of 12 Soap boxes, the Grand Final deciding the Top 3 winners of the event, with a Star struck Formula One style podium presentation and Trophies awarded to the 1st , 2nd ,and 3rd places by Olympic Rowing Champion Eric Murray A huge thanks go to the Sponsors that supported the event and made it happen ITM Cambridge suppliers of Kit set materials Lions Cambridge – funding the Wheels Ebbett Toyota supporting the event with a donation to the organisers to help cover set up and event running costs And not forgetting the Cycling Festival organisers that allowed us to be part of their wonderful event A Great event for the VVC Club. TWILGHT RUN (0BSERVATION RUN) A FLAT WHITE ie CUP OF COFFEE, AT THE START WAS A GOOD IDEA AS MOST MEMBERS HAD THE SAME THOUHGTS, SO BECAME A GATHERING OF OLD, OLDER, AND VERY OLD MEMBERS THAT VAL & I HAD NOT SEEN FOR AGES (OUR FAULT). WE HEADED OFF TO HONOUR OUR MARSHELING COMMITMENT IN NGARUAWAHIA, A FREEZING COLD WIND BLOWING THE AUTUMN LEAVES INTO THE RIVER. THANK GOD ALL THE RALLIESTS LOOKED SEASONED PROFESSIONALS, WE WONT HAVE STAY HERE LONG, WRONG! WRONG! WRONG! KING RALLY RANGATIRA, DRIVING THE WHITE GHOST (MUSTANG) FOUND A SUITABLE PLACE TO U TURN AT OHINIWAI, LUCKY IT WAS A V8 AS WE WERE JUST PACKING UP ON THEIR ARIVAL AT NGARUAWAHIA. OH THE LOOKS OF NAUSEOUSNES WHEN CONFRONTED WITH BLOODY QUESTIONS?? HOWEVER THE CHOCOLATE FISH SO VERY CUNNINGLY OFFERED BY THE BOZZIES WERE HALF DEMOLISHED AND PREVENTED ANY VERBAL ATTACK TO THE FROZEN MARSHEL. LAST CAR THROUGH AND OFF WE SET TO THE WORKING MANS CLUB READY FOR A GOOD FEED OF FISH N CHIPS AND A BEER. A MEAL LIKE THIS IS NOT COMPLETE WITH OUT A COUPLE OF EGGS TO ENHANSE THE FEED. BBUUURRRP### GEE THAT WAS GOOD GRUB. AFTER DINNER HEATHER AND GRAHAM THANKED EVERYONE THAT CAME ALONG AND PRESENTED PRIZES TO THE WINNERS WHO WERE, BRUNLETTS, BROOKS, AND HARD LUCK TO THE OHINIWHAI VISITERS TERRILLS . APROX 20 VEHICLES TURNED OUT WITH OVER 30 STAYING FOR DINNER, A THANKYOU FROM THE FLOOR FOLLOWED BY ROBUST CLAPPING FOR HEATHER AND GRAHAM BOSWELLS EFFORTS CONFERMED A GOOD RUN WITH A TWIST THAT WAS APPRECIATED BY ALL. TWILIGHT RUN 2019 Starting at Mega Mitre, Ruakura, was a brilliant idea, as it gave us all time to sit, chat and have a coffee, just the thing to relax before the start of the run. A good decent crowd all lined up for instructions, then set off at regular intervals. Following Wairere Drive for a short while, then off into the countryside, heading west into the setting sun, which made vision a challenge. With straight forward instructions, and with no silent checks (thank goodness!) we made our way to Huntly, over the river, and back down the western side to Ngaruawahia. Here we were quizzed on our observation skills, but this team had just been enjoying the relaxation of the drive, so didn’t really have a clue to the answers. At least we didn’t get carried away, like one team in their newly acquired speed machine (Mustang), who tried to make a swift trip to Auckland!!! However, they soon realised the error of their ways, and got themselves back on track. It was at this stage that a couple returning from another engagement in Auckland spotted the stream of cars, and joined in, even though they had no instructions. The final destination was the Workingman’s Club in Commerce Street, Frankton, where our arrival was anticipated by the Club. Tables had been set up for us in a relatively private alcove, so the chatter continued, together with a very tasty, reasonably priced meal. The results were announced, confirming that this team do have a problem with observation. A bad luck award was made to the errant Mustang team, and there was a dead heat for the winners, Team Bruntlett and Team Brooks. Well done!! The numbers would have satisfied the organisers, and it was great to see some who we haven’t seen in a while, eg Trish and Mike Rees, and Lesley and Les Webster. Our grateful thanks to Graham, Heather and their helpers for a most enjoyable afternoon/evening. It was a perfect Twilight Run for those of us in our ‘Twilight’. MGBGT
