Editor’s Snippet Hi All How did everyone survive Lockdown!!! We have moved to Level 1 which will allow Club activities to resume, check our Club calendar for the Home & Away activities. We are being careful as a responsible Club should be with several activities planned for the next few months like a Breakout Party on Saturday July 25 and a Club Run on July 19. Our AGM is coming up on the 12 July. “I know” I hear you say “Better not put my hand up, I might get a job” attitude. Our Club is dependent on people having a good diversity of likes and dislikes. This is also true for the Committee. To make good decisions we have to gain the facts and the wishes of the people to make informed decisions so we all move in a united way and back the direction. Because no body has been forthcoming with a story about their cars I have had to fill the gap with the story of my ‘39 Chev. It follows on from the story of my ‘55 Chev. I have a desire to find out the story of my cars nearly as if they were people, they are born, where they grew bigger, they get more used then they become special as they age gracefully. Keep to the left, enjoy your motoring and travel well.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS REPORT: We have come a long way since March 25th when the country went into Lockdown. It was a tough time for many of us, especially those in business. We entered a long dark tunnel but as time passed and our team of 5 million did the right thing, we saw the light at the end of the tunnel and now we are out of the tunnel. So, we can start getting back to our new normal, club nights, club runs, swap meet, and the Vintage Venture. The Vintage Venture was already organized by Steve and Cazna Payne but had to be cancelled due to Covid 19, however Steve and Cazna are happy to reinstate the Vintage Venture, probably in September or October so watch this space. At the July club night, a power point presentation will be shown about the proposed club shed project. This will explain the Committees preferred design, costings, and operational details. Hopefully this will answer all your questions and will clear up any grey areas. At the following club night, which will be the club’s AGM, on the 12 th August the shed project can be ratified by the members. At last year’s AGM the shed project was agreed in principle, up to $60K. Also at the AGM we will be needing some new committee members, in fact all committee positions are up for election as some existing committee members have made the decision not to stand again. So, I would urge all club members to seriously think about supporting your club by standing for the committee. You will see by the ad in the magazine that we are having a “Break Out Party” to celebrate achieving Level One, it will be a Fancy Dress, Pot Luck Dinner, so wear what you like and bring what you like to eat and drink. Most importantly, keep the 25 th July free. I was probably like lots of other club members during lockdown, spending a lot of time in the shed. I polished the Model “T” and took it for a couple of drives around the block, I carried out some jobs on the Triumph, fitted a new thermostat to solve the overheating problem we had on the Kinloch weekend. I also fitted a new copper oil pressure gauge line and a suspension bush. Then a cut and polish so it looks and runs great. In fact, I went to the car show at the Tauranga Crossing which is held on the first Sunday of the month and picked up the Third Peoples Choice, a $20 gift voucher from a local Café. So that was time well spent in the shed. I also have another project, a 1985 Ford Sierra Giha, 2.3L V6, which had been parked in a shed in Matamata for 16 years. So that gave me plenty to do. It is nearly ready for a WOF check as the Rego is on hold. I would love to hear some stories of what other members got up to over the Lockdown. As you all know the Clubs National Day was cancelled due to the dreaded Covid19, but all is not lost. Our branch is going to hold our own “Daffodil Day” on the 23 rd August to raise some funds for our local Cancer Society. So, watch this space for further details. The Clubs National AGM is being held on the 15th August in Wanganui, there will be an Executive meeting on the Friday night followed by the AGM on Saturday. As Wanganui is not to far away it would be great to have a good Waikato turnout. I would like to give all our new members a warm Waikato WELCOME and hope to catch up with you all in the near future. Secretary’s Report With the arrival of Level 1 we are all emerging to reasonably normal lives. Events will slowly get back to the ‘new normal’, although I have not had any notifications of anything as yet. AGM As you will see in other parts of this magazine, our AGM is to take place on 12th August, and we are hoping for a big attendance on the night. It is not particularly pleasant leaving the fire on a cold winter’s night, but this is one night that we hope you put in the effort to support YOUR club. You could be bribed with a delicious supper!!? C lu b C a p t a in Club Captain’s Report – July 2020 It’ s so good to be able to pick up our runs and events and give our cars and bikes an outing. The Wednesday Wanderers were first away with Club Runs following. The run to Derek’s would be a chance to get some publicity for our Club in Morrinsville and surrounding districts. I believe we have not done enough to let folk know what our Club is all about and what has been achieved to foster the use of Clubeligible vehicles. My thoughts are, if you are going on the 19 th July with a Club-eligible vehicle would you please phone or txt me (027)2726319. If we have enough vehicles I could ring the local paper and perhaps get a photo and story published. The appointment of a Publicity Officer will be so important in the future. After talking to Graham at the Club night and phoning Cazna there is a good chance we can slot in the Venture Rally that Steve and Cazna had planned before lockdown. The thought sometime in October would be suitable. The committee will be considering our Events calendar at their next meeting. Members will be thinking about Chairman Graham’s idea to have more Club sections defined by vehicle ages. The section would decide what type of events suit them and their vehicles. This type of change supports my survey which showed only a very small number of members were interested in our traditional competitive rallies. An idea like Graham’s should be trialled over three years. If it works good, otherwise modify or change. .Terry
CLUB RUN 19TH JULY Gaye & Derek have invited us to their pad for a BBQ lunch, inspection of Derek’s trains and a team game of bowls. Should the weather be too wet a next-door-neighbour will talk about their interest in model aircraft. Meet at the Club Rooms from 9.30 to leave at 10.30. Bring what you’d like to cook on the BBQ.
Motorcycle Motor Cycle Section I have finished the service and clutch repairs on the BSA, now only require a WOF which expired during the lock down, then will be set for a ride. I have a run planned and I am waiting to find somewhere suitable for lunch after we have finished . As in the past at this time of the year the date we set and put in the Venture often we find that the weather is unsuitable. So I am proposing to I look at the weather forecast and pick a Sunday that is going to be fine and email the M/C people, giving about a fortnights notice. Keen to hear what people think, please drop me an email paspiller@xtra.co.nz. Hope you all enjoyed the article written by Dave Mayhew which I put in the last Venture. I had another sent to me concerning our friend John Shannon's early M/C experience, with a two stroke bike which back fired when he was starting it, while waiting in a line of traffic. As he went to move away the bike shot back wards, some two stokes had a habit of doing this, not a very nice feeling for him and the chap behind. All for now, look forward to hearing from you Peter

Wednesday Wander July 15th is the 3rd Wednesday of the month, and as July seems to have the worst weather in the winter, we'll start with a bit of hibernation. So 12 noon at the Pilot Bar (which is now called Chambers, with new owners and new menu), Canada St. Morrinsville. We could possibly discuss runs for the rest of the year, and I have a surprise for you for our December outing. If you haven't got your car out of lockdown yet, this is your chance! ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING The Annual General Meeting of the Veteran & Vintage Car Club (Waikato) Inc. for 2020 will be held at the Clubrooms, MacLean St, Cambridge at 8.00pm on Wednesday 12th July 2020. Any written nominations for officer and committee positions should be lodged with the Branch Secretary prior to the meeting. Acceptance of nominations from the floor will be subject to the nominee being present at the meeting. All positions are open for nominations, and new faces and ideas would be most welcome. 1939 Chevrolet Master 85
I was hoping somebody would send me an article on their car, but alas it was not to be . I included an article in the last Venture on our 1955 Chev Bel Air I recently imported and this is the remainder of my fleet. This car was first registered 18th April 1939, no far before the outbreak of WW2. It was first owned by people who lived in Bell Block near New Plymouth. These people sold the car in 1963 to Mr George Temperton of Raurimu, who was employed in the local timber mill. George never married and lived in a small bach with an attach garage. In the early 2004 I was looking after the building Apprentices and I visited Taumarunui as part of my area on a 3 monthly cycle. I noticed on Tuesday morning this car, a 1939 Chev parked up the main street of Taumarunui. I thought it was great to see an old car 12
car still being used to go to town. I passed it by not real giving it much more thought. On my next visit to Taumarunui which was again a Tuesday, I saw the old Chev parked on the road side up the main street. Curiosity got the better of me, I stopped, got out and had a look. Pretty rough with good bones was how I summed it up. The windscreen rubbers were well past their best and to stop the leaks liberal black silicone had been applied. It had an old Fox Terrior asleep on the seat, inside as you would imagine smelt of dog. I hung around for a while, no one came. 3 months passed by and I was on other visit to Taumarunui, yes it was Tuesday and sure enough about smoko time there was the old Chev parked up the main street. But this time an old boy was just about to get in to it. I stopped and had a chat. George told me a bit about the car and himself. He was a member of the Chev Club. I raked my brain, yes George was a Life Member of the Chev Club, I could remember his name from the newsletters I received. George passed away in 2008, his death notice was published in the Chev Club Mag. Being a smart Chap I wrote to his niece who was the Family contact for George’s funeral. I asked about the car. Several days later she replied, saying she wanted to sell the Chev , but her Brother wanted to buy it. I asked for 1st right of refusal if the brother thing didn’t materialise. About 4 months later and having forgotten about the car, out of the blue I got a phone call from the niece asking me if I was still interested in the Chev. She had a valuation carried out by Howard P. Needless to say the rest is now history. I went down to her place and drove the car home. I spent several week cleaning the Chev inside and out, cutting and polishing it several times. My 1st effort at ordering parts ex America soon arrived—new window rubbers . The Chev has done 245000 miles, I have rebuilt the motor and gearbox, reupholstered the interior and tidied up the outside. It is still unrestored with all matching numbers the same as 18th April 1939. Graham Boswell 13
