Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Welcome to our February Venture. I hope you had an enjoyable Xmas and got away for a well earned break. 2019 is going to be a busy year. I can’t remember when there have been 3 Entry Form in one month of the Venture. Talking of the Entry Forms , if you do not want them in your mag just pull them out, starting from the centre . The same goes for those wishing to enter any of the Rallies. Good Luck with your entry forms. Welcome to our February Venture. There are plenty of Club events scheduled with some events that the Club is supporting such as the Trolley Derby in Cambridge on Anzac Day. This is a opportunity for tomorrows members to get a taste of what we love. We purchased 2 Trolley Kits for 2 of the Grandies to have a go , they will also be part of the building process as will their Fathers. I have managed to get my 55 Chev on the road . I am trying to run the engine in well. I will try to take it over to Leadfoot Festival on the 2 and 3rd of February. This is a great event for “Petrol Heads” of all ages. The other event is of note is Americarna held in New Plymouth on 20-23 February. So all in all “Fasten your Seatbelts” and come for a ride.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter Hi Folks Happy New Year and welcome to another year of Vintage Motoring. Blue Smoke and Pedals set the year rolling and although numbers were down on last year everybody who came enjoyed themselves. The Gymkhana and Picnic drew some twenty cars with eighteen taking part in the Gymkhana Challenge which I am happy to tell you was won by Waikato. We have a Club run on the 6th of Feb, details in the Club Captains report. 17th March is the Vintage Venture, this year it’s starting in Thames. 31st March we have the Ladies Rally and then in April the Mooloo Meander and the Twilight Run and on Anzac Day is the Trolley Derby through the Streets of Cambridge. S e c r e ta r y SECRETARY REPORT: Welcome to 2019 - hope you all had a Happy New Year. Hopefully there is some great weather around the corner and looking forward to some car club runs/outings. By the time you read this Blue Smoke and Pedals will be over, also the Wednesday Wander to Horohoro Domain, (good turnout, nice weather, great conversations). 20th of January is the Gymkhana so let’s hope a good turnout happens. If you’re a fan to show off your car there is “Brits at the Beach” on 15th,16th,17th Feb. By now you should have all paid your subs for the next 12 months so hopefully a return to normal and getting Beaded wheels, which you probably open at “cars for sale” 1st (so I’m told). Remember to check the club notice board for any “entry forms” you may be looking for - if it’s not there, contact me. Remember also if you change address or change a car please let me know so I can correct the club computer and I also let Julie know in CHCH in case you forget, that way the Beaded Wheels and Venture go to the right address. The next club night is 13th February so see you there. Remember, to get the best out of your club you need to participate. Happy motoring. Derek 5
C lu b C a p t a in Club Captain’s Report Members have told me our Christmas Run and Pot Luck Dinner went very well. A special thanks to those who made it possible. Our Motorcycle Section’s Blue Smoke & Pedals was good fun and enjoyed by those who rode those ‘underpowered, pedal-helped’ machines. They are so much a part of our motorcycling history. A big thanks to those members who responded to my survey, and to those who added or made comments. Our Project Shed with equipment for members use gained 25 in favour and 13 feeling otherwise. I hope my previous comments put those safety issue and management problems to rest. Andy and Paul would be so pleased to have any thoughts to make sure we have the best possible Safety & Management Plans in place. Should Club nights be more social? Most felt the present format is OK. As I mentioned before, most members did not rate what they would be likely to support, but made very useful comments. I have listed these and will comment on most with suggestions, or will refer the others to the Committee to consider. The comments are generally moving away from supporting competitive events and those who rated events tended to leave out enough for one to think too many events are being offered. One return had Wednesday Wanders at 1, with non-competitive Club runs at 2, with no further ratings for any of the other events. My own view is by offering the same type and number of events, we are responding to most members’ motoring interests. However, if numbers taking part are low and tend to be the same folk taking part, Greg’s thoughts on reducing frequency of some events should be considered. I intend to suggest that our Committee appoint 3 Committee members to come up with the next year’s Calendar of Events, taking the survey’s comments into consideration. Please tell me if you think we are offering too many events. I am also going to ask Committee if there could be a Club Captain’s box for members to express criticisms and comments. One survey return mentioned club nights should be used to fix what is wrong (if anything) with our Club. I don’t think this is the best place, but notes in the Club Captain’s box would be so useful and then could be discussed by the Committee and raised at a Club night, and improvements could then be implemented. Motorcycle Hi
In my last article I said that the Auckland Rally was based at Orewa and we were to visit the site offices for the new Puhoi / Warkworth motorway extension. We were given a talk about this protect and all the problems they had to over come. As this is a privately funded contract and when finished it will be handed back to the Government at a cost of seven hundred million dollars. Some one from the group said that’s cheap, it is only the cost of 700 Auckland houses!!! It was a great rally and one of the best for many years and as the winner lives in Orewa we will possibly have another one in the same area next year. Our Xmas Social run in December was well attended and as planned we had lunch at the Whatawhata pub before going onto visit Ken Ashman’s railway memorabilia and what a collection. It was mainly of all things connected to signals, track layouts and switching points etc that go into controlling trains. Ken has been collecting for more years than he can remember. He has working displays of old points and signal changing systems in old signal boxes, right through to the latest electronic systems, a truly fanatic set up which Ken can be very proud of. Thanks Bob for arranging the visit. Next M/C event is the national rally in Blenheim in February and I wish all those going a safe and enjoyable event, The entries for the Mooloo in April will be in this Venture and you will see that the Friday night’s dinner will again be in the Prince Albert Pub, every one said how much the enjoyed it there last year and I am sure it will be the same this year. Electric Vehicles
Following the recent visit from Kevin Porteous to VCC meeting it got me thinking of why the Power producers where pushing EVs. The following is a little of the background for this. Electric vehicles are vehicles charged from an external electricity source. They can be powered in two ways:
Solely by electric batteries - known as pure electric vehicles or, A combination of batteries and a conventional engine – called plug-in hybrid electric vehicles.
New Zealand is well suited to electric vehicles New Zealand is well placed to benefit from electric vehicles. More than 80 percent of electricity is generated from renewable sources and there is enough supply for widespread adoption of EVs. Even if every light vehicle was electric, there is sufficient generation capacity to charge these provided the majority are charged at off-peak times. High renewable energy levels mean that the emission reduction benefits of electric vehicles in New Zealand are greater than in most other countries, producing 80 percent fewer greenhouse gas emissions.
New Zealand’s electricity system makes for easy charging from existing outlets.
More than 85 percent of New Zealand homes have off-street parking. This makes overnight home charging easy and convenient. New Zealanders have a low average commute. Urban drivers
only travel 22 kilometres a day — a distance the batteries in current electric vehicles can easily handle. On 5 May 2016, the Government announced its Electric Vehicles Programme. This includes measures to increase the number of electric vehicles in New Zealand and has a goal of reaching approximately 64,000 electric vehicles on our roads 20 by the end of 2021, No RUC..

Wednesday Wander February 20th 2019 A Mystery Tour. This is a run most suitable for smaller cars( like a Triumph Herald). You well need a Navigator with a pen and clipboard. You will need to bring along your lunch or get it on the way around. You will also need your Car!!. Prizes will be presented to the winners. BLOW THE COBWEBS AWAY A BEAUTIFUL DAY DAWNED TO SHOW OFF OUR FINAL CLUB RUN OF THE YEAR. THE THEME FOR THE DAY WAS TOPS DOWN AND SUN ROOFS AND WINDOWS OPEN. A GOOD TURNOUT ARRIVED AT THE CLUBROOMS IN TIME FOR THE 1.30PM START. QUITE A FEW CAME EARLY AND HAD LUNCH. AS IT WAS A POT LUCK DINNER THERE WERE LOTS OF YUMMY DISHES ARRIVING FOR OUR MAIN COURSE, SO I WAS REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO A SCRUMPTOUS FEAST. EVERYBODY WAS GIVEN THEIR INSTRUCTIONS AND THEIR TICKET FOR A FREE DRINK OR ICECREAM AT MONOVALE BLUEBERRY CAFE. 1.30PM THE FIRST CAR LEFT AND AWAY WE WENT ON A NICE EASY RUN, NON COMPETATIVE, AND EASY TO FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. MARCIA AND I WERE IN THE LITTLE RED TRIUMPH HERALD WITH THE TOP DOWN OF COURSE. WE WERE LAST TO LEAVE AND SOON CAUGHT UP TO SOME OF THE SLOWER CARS. IT WAS A DELIGHTFUL DRIVE, BLUE SKY AND BEAUTIFUL WAIKATO SCENERY. THE INSTRUCTIONS HIGHLIGHTED PLACES OF INTEREST FOR MEMBERS TO STOP AT IF THEY WISHED. ONE OF THESE STOPS WAS THE “INTERIORS BARN LTD”, WHAT A FASCINATING PLACE IT WAS FULL OF BEAUTIFUL AND DIFFERENT ITEMS FOR THE HOME. THE PRICES WERE VERY REASONABLE AS SOME MEMBERS PROVED BY PURCHASING SOME LOVELY ITEMS. I KNOW MARCIA WANTS TO GO BACK THERE, PROBABLY WITHOUT ME.!. AFTER LEAVING THE INTERIOR BARN WE CARRIED ONTO MONOVALE BLUEBERRY CAFE. THIS IS WHERE MEMBERS EXCHANGED THEIR TICKET FOR A DRINK OR A DELICOUS ICECREAM; MOST PEOPLE WENT FOR THE ICECREAM. ON LEAVING MONOVALE WE FOLLOWED THE INSTUCTIONS BACK TO THE CLUBROOOMS. HUGH AND BRONYA HAD SET UP AND DECORATED THE TABLES READY FOR DINNER. THERE WERE DECORATIONS AROUND THE WALLS AND CHRISTMAS MUSIC WAS PLAYING WE ALL SAT AROUND HAVING A FEW COLD DRINKS AND NIBBLES, THE SUNSHADE WAS UP OUTSIDE AND ALL THE WINDOWS AND DOORS WERE OPEN AS IT WAS A VERY WARM AFTERNOON. THE POT LUCK DINNER WAS ALL SET OUT AND LOOKED SO DELICIOUS WITH ALL THE DIFFERENT DISHES THAT PEOPLE HAD BOUGHT ALONG. THE DESERT WAS SUPPLIED BY BRONYA AND IT WAS MAGNIFICENT. IT WAS A TRUELY LOVELY DINNER. CHOCOLATE SANTAS WERE GIVEN TO ALL MEMBERS WHO COMPLIED WITHT THE TOP DOWN, SUNROOF OPEN AND WINDOWS DOWN, WHICH WAS EVERYBODY, I AM PLEASED TO SAY. THIS WAS A LOVELY WAY TO FINISH THE YEAR, GREAT WEATHER, GREAT RUN, DELICOUS ICECREAM, A MAGNIFICENT DINNER AND OF COURSE THE BEST OF COMPANY. WELL DONE TO ALL THE MEMBERS WHO TURNED UP TO ENJOY THE DAY. A VERY BIG THANKYOU MUST GO TO HUGH AND BRONYA AND THEIR HELPERS FOR DECORATING THE CLUB ROOMS, SETTING THE TABLES, AND SUPPLYING DESERT PLUS HELPING WITH DINNER. ALSO THANKS TO HUGH AND BRONYA FOR PLOTTING A LOVELY RUN AND ORGANISING BEAUTIFUL WEATHER. THANKS TO ALL GRAHAM PATE. 22
