Editor’s Snippet Welcome to 2021. The year we won’t forget has passed and hopefully, this coming year will bring us sunny days and smooth roads ahead. I could say that maybe, eventually, the Venture Magazines days are numbered as the club now has a Facebook page which may, eventually, become the major means of communication between its members and their activities and the clubs up and coming events etc etc As an Editor I am constantly requesting articles (relevant to the club and its members activities) for the magazine but alas, they are not readily forthcoming. For a Facebook page to work we need all members to get behind it. If you participate in a rally and end up with some good shots or little instances that you feel others would like to see or hear about then please, please, get it on the club Facebook page. To give you an example of a good Facebook page, go online and have a look at the Vintage Car Club Facebook page. It makes for good reading and will give you a good example of how well a Facebook page can work for all. Oh well, this is the first Venture for the up and coming year. Please accept any spelling errors that I don’t pick up (we’ll blame it on spellcheck, shall we?) and any sentence construction errors that may occur. Trust me, I get told of such errors which, in some respects, indicates to me that members do read the magazine which makes it all worthwhile.

By the time you read this we will have enjoyed Christmas day with friends and family and then survived New Year’s Eve then we can kiss 2020 goodbye, one of the strangest years I can remember, thank goodness it’s over. However, we must still be vigilante, keep up with the Covid Tracing App and keep signing where we go. We had a lovely Christmas dinner at the clubrooms in December to celebrate the end of the year and to present Fred Rix with his 50 year membership badge and certificate, congratulations Fred. I keep in regular contact with my cousin and her friend from the UK, who were here in March when we went into lockdown. The UK and Europe are in a very bad way, so they are so jealous of our way of life. So, let’s all work together to make 2021 a great year for New Zealand and the Vintage Car Club. 2021 can and will be as good as you want it to be, there is plenty of activities to keep all members and their vehicles involved with the club. There have been two separate sections set up, one to cater for the older vehicles, and one to cater for the faster vehicles. I am sure that here will be something for every member to participate in. Hopefully the Shed project will keep moving forward once we have clarified some issues with the Council (see page 6). Please contact myself or any committee member if you have any ideas about club runs or places to visit. I look forward to enjoying the coming year with you all. Keep smiling and Keep left. S e c r e t a r y Finally you have a full time Secretary, I have retired from full time work, will be able to concentrate on being your Club Secretary. Will catch up with Jan and learn a lot more due to time being available now. So much to learn. I will be away until the end of January at the beach with family, then when the parents and Graham return to work. Four Grandies will stay and look after me. Lovely time at the beach. Mr Aaron Kearney is now Mr Facebook Aaron has been generous enough to put his hand up to create a Facebook page for the club. I initiated the suggestion of the club having a Facebook page at the last club meeting. Under discussion, Aaron was asked if he would set a page up and after a little persuasion he accepted the position. By the time I got home from the meeting that night an email had come through from Aaron with a link to the clubs new Facebook page - that was quick!! At the moment anything you want to put on the page will need to go through Aaron, but eventually members will be able to post direct any articles, pictures etc on the Facebook page. Club Captain s Report February 2021 Hi All I hope you all had a relaxing Xmas and New Year period. If you managed to get away with Family or Friends I hope you enjoyed the time . 2021 has started, the committee has got several runs and Rallies down for the year. I trust that we will have something that spins your wheels. The Ladies Rally on the 7th March is probably 1st Cab off the Rank. If you Ladies seldom get to drive your cars, here is your chance. A good fun day for the Ladies. Our annual Double 50 Rally is set down for Queen’s Birthday weekend (5th - 7th June), this is the major Rally for our Club on the National Calendar this year. So mark it down on your calendar now and enter this one when the Entry Form is in Venture in April. The big activity for Waikato VCC will be the erection of our new Workshop. This will be an exciting addition to our Club facilities. It will offer Members the ability to undertake work and checks of their vehicles. It will have down-stream spin off for those who wish to learn more about the world of Cars and a “Blokes Shed” in the longer term. If you have contacts or skills which can be used for the shed activity please contact me. Till next time, be safe and keep left Bozy
LATEST SHED REPORT The Building consent has been lodged by TotalSpan on our behalf. As the club is not the property owner, permission has to be obtained from the Council, who are our Landlord. Having sent all the details to the department that controls the reserves we eventually received a reply stating that they will not give us permission to build the shed where we wish to. We will be having a site meeting with the Council and our Committee early in the year. TotalSpan have been advised of this and our order is on hold. As soon as a resolution is reached YOU LL BE NOTIFIED. Regards GRAHAM PATE Chairman

M o to r c y c le The Auckland Rally was one of the best for many a year. There was a number of Waikato Members who attended, which was good, as many Aucklander’s attended our Mooloo. The start was from the Ramarama Hall which was just off the motor way, very handy. The run was on back roads some of which were very narrow, and many I had never been on, we finally ended up in Tuakau by the old Kentish Hotel where we given a tub of Tip top Ice Cream, a very nice touch. We then returned to Ramarama for lunch after which we were off on the afternoon run towards The Hunua Ranges and back to the start. Given all the problems with the Auckland lock down etc they did a great job in keeping us safe, along with a great rally. Our Xmas Social run in December that was very kindly arranged by Bob was well attended along with number of Waikato Classic M/C members, good to see them along. The route we took to get to our lunch stop at the Redoubt Bar in T/A was along back roads with great views of the Waikato countryside. After lunch we visited Graeme Blackstock’s home to view his collection of bikes and cars. He had a number of bikes which will require a lot restoration work, reminded me of when I got my Royal Enfield as a basket case. This years Mooloo will be on the 9/10 April and we will use every thing that was prepared for the 2020 Rally for this coming event. Entry forms will be out next month.
WE ARE STILL LOOKING FOR THE FOLLOWING MISSING ITEM The committee is looking for the Vintage Venture Rally Box that is normally found in the Library office. It is a white filing box with, believe it or not, Vintage Venture Rally written on it . We have asked around to previous plotters of the rally but to no avail so. If you have ever been connected to a Vintage Venture rally can you please have a check around the house, it may just be sitting in the corner of your office waiting to be noticed. If you find it simply place it on the office desk in the library. Many thanks 7

The Waikato Branch announces formation of an Early Eras motoring group
—The Venturers— to cater for the special requirements of vehicles produced in the early days of motoring, and their enthusiasts. The group’s name and badge chosen have connections to the club’s successful earlier days. The stylised car and driver have been used to promote our activities on several past occasions. The first group activity is planned for Fri-Sunday 2628th March 2021, as a weekend tour to the small township of Waitomo. Expect entry and event details by email in early February, but put it in your diary and plan your accommodation now. All three group cruising speed bands of 20, 30 and 40 mph will be catered for at the venue, with suitable motoring and social opportunities. The proposed format is to motor south on Friday afternoon, enjoy some local driving and a visit of interest Saturday, followed by a shared dinner. Then to motor back north on Sunday morning.

Club Donation to the Cancer Society $2,762.00
A representative of the Cancer Society popped along to the December club night to receive a donation from the club. As most are aware the money was raised from a very successful auction night held at the club. After the auction and all the money counted the club decided to add a $1,000 on top of the auction money giving us the above grand total. A GOOD NIGHT FOR A GOOD CAUSE

Xmas Dinner By the time you read this it will be February and many weeks since the clubs Xmas Party, so is it worth mentioning you may ask? I think it is. So what made the evening so successful? I can’t put a finger on it but it was a great night which was reinforced by the many compliments that came our way. Like all successful dinner parties, it is made up of two ingredients, good people and good food. The evening had a abundance of both. The night was not only to celebrate Xmas but to congratulate Fred Rix for his 50 year Badge which was presented to him by the evenings guests Karen Smylie (North Island Club Captain) and her partner. A BIG THANKS must go to the following; Graeme & Nola for assisting with the set up of the tables etc Graham and Marcia Pate for all the help in prepping the food last but not least, to Sue and Reece Burnett for their assistance in cleaning up the vast amount of dishes etc.. Once again many thanks to all.

Congratulations Fred 50 year Membership Fred Rix was awarded his 50 year badge at the club Xmas Dinner. Well done Fred. It was presented to Fred by the North Island Club Captain Karen Smylie I congratulated Fred on 50 years (while he was pouring a cuppa). His response was simple, “it wasn’t hard, all I had to do was keep breathing”.

Joke The graveside service had just ended when there was a frightening clap of thunder, followed by a tremendous bolt of lightning accompanied by even louder thunder. The little old man looked at the pastor and said calmly, “Well, she’s there.” 13
A New Addition To The Clubrooms At the last AGM it was voted by members present that the club install a “Bowranda” style canopy between the clubroom and the library building. A big thanks must go to Graeme Luxford for “pushing” it along.. It was manufactured and installed by Duncan Canvas of Hamilton and a good job they have done. I can see it being a major asset for the club with it getting a lot of use as the particular area is now become a very useable space, irrespective of the weather.
New Club Fridge The old club fridge finally gave up the ghost, so time for a new one. It failed to keep food at the correct temperature . The problem wasn’t food getting warm but food getting too cold and freezing the likes of salads etc etc. No doubt the power bill will be lower as modern fridges are so economical. 14
Joke The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife goodbye and said, 'Well, I'm off now. The man should be here soon.' Half an hour later, just by chance, a door-to-door baby photographer happened to ring the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. 'Good morning, Ma'am', he said, 'I've come to... 'Oh, no need to explain,' Mrs. Smith cut in, embarrassed, 'I've been expecting you. 'Have you really?' said the photographer. 'Well, that's good. Did you know babies are my specialty?' 'Well that's what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat'. After a moment she asked, blushing, 'Well, where do we start?' 'Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch, and perhaps a couple on the bed. And sometimes the living room floor is fun. You can really spread out there.' 'Bathtub, living room floor? No wonder it didn't work out for Harry and me!' 'Well, Ma'am, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven angles, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.' 'My, that's a lot!', gasped Mrs. Smith. 'Ma'am, in my line of work a man has to take his time. I'd love to be In and out in five minutes, but I'm sure you'd be disappointed with that.' 'Don't I know it,' said Mrs. Smith quietly. The photographer opened his briefcase and pulled out a portfolio of his baby pictures. 'This was done on the top of a bus,' he said. 'Oh, my God!' Mrs. Smith exclaimed, grasping at her throat. 'And these twins turned out exceptionally well - when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with.' 'She was difficult?' asked Mrs. Smith. 'Yes, I'm afraid so. I finally had to take her to the park to get the job done right. People were crowding around four and five deep to get a good look' 'Four and five deep?' said Mrs. Smith, her eyes wide with amazement. 'Yes', the photographer replied. 'And for more than three hours, too. The mother was constantly squealing and yelling - I could hardly concentrate, and when darkness approached I had to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just had to pack it all in.' Mrs. Smith leaned forward. 'Do you mean they actually chewed on your, uh...equipment?' 'It's true, Ma'am, yes.. Well, if you're ready, I'll set-up my tripod and we can get to work right away.' 'Tripod?' 'Oh yes, Ma'am. I need to use a tripod to rest my Canon on. It's much too big to be held in the hand for very long.' Mrs. Smith fainted

We had been looking forward to this New Year's Day Club Run, getting the car out for a long run, really blowing out the cobwebs, enjoying the countryside, having conversations with old friends and getting to know new ones. The day did not disappoint. Thanks to the planning and thought done by Graham and Marcia. They had us meet at the iconic Matamata I site. Then headed off with simple instructions to Waharoa. Well, who knew of this little village with its “Open Country” dairy factory and opportunity knocks thinking café owners? We rocked up to the Griddle Earth Café. completely filled up their dining tables and enjoyed quick and cheery service. Terry, the owner skilfully served our coffees while stopping to chat and enjoy car talk. We appreciated him being open to supply our drink and food needs and he appreciated us making it worth his while. Win/win! Our mix of makes and models ranging from 1930’s-1980's moved on out through the back country roads heading towards the Kaimai Ranges. What a picture! It’s imprinted in my memory, as a photo could not really capture the gorgeous views. The hills are still green and fresh and the patchwork of agriculture varieties is magic. We head on out onto the State highway and find the traffic is not as busy as expected. Maybe most people are at their holiday places nursing sore heads and sleeping off the night before. We are thrilled with Elsie’s (the Chrysler) performance purring up over the Kaimais in top gear without a hiccup. Even using the passing lane to overtake trucks. We are surprised at how the modern drivers are happy to sit behind an old car, compared to when we drive the motorhome where they tend to duck in and out craning for opportunity to pass us. I think as they sit behind our old cars, they are remembering their own childhood family vehicles The day is warm and there are some of us going topless, ahh the freedom! One of our group had a bit of car problem when leaving Waharoa, but as is usual in the family of car lovers there was support and encouragement and all arrived safely at our destination, McLaren Falls. The Pate’s have scoped out a great spot to park our cars and we amble across to the shade of the willow trees. Out come the chairs, picnics and a most impressive array of tables as well. (note to self must get a portable picnic table). Terry and Bev in particular looked like something out of a Katherine Mansfield novel. We had a lovely relaxing time, just chatting, eating and enjoying being out with really good people making the most of our health, weather, beautiful countryside and of course that which brings us together, our old cars. The theme is set, the date is set. Come on ladies, make this a memorable Ladies Rally. The theme lends itself to some imaginative dress up, so please set your mind a racing and come up with some great costumes. A prize for the best costume will be well worth the effort. Drive your modern if you want to. After all, its all about the day, the company and not the car. The programme for the day will run something like this; Arrive at the clubrooms at 12 noon for a very HIGH TEA lunch. After lunch there will be a moderate length rally with activities involved throughout the trip. The rally will terminate back at the clubrooms for a cuppa and prize giving. Prize for best dressed and also a prize for best created object. This is your day ladies. Round up your friends. Handy Hint So you have spilled oil on your garage floor or cooking oil in the kitchen. How do you clean it up? Paper towel, hot water and detergent? No!! If you use any of these methods all you will do is make a lot of hard work for yourself. If you spill oil simply grab a bag of plain flour out of the kitchen pantry and sprinkle a generous amount on the oil. Run away and get a broom. By the time you get back the oil will have soaked into the flour and all you have to do is sweep up the oil soaked flour. Then, and only then give some thought to hot water and detergent if you think it requires a final wipe over. 19
