Editor’s Snippet Hi All It is the middle of Winter sure enough, wind and rain make it kind of nice to have a day inside. We have a number of events starting to appear around the country side. One event that requires a lot of input from members is our swap meet being held this year on the 15th November. Please look out for calls for assistance and join the event as a Marshall. Our AGM is being held on the 12th August, please come along and support the incoming Committee with your guidance and wisdom. There are several positions available this year with some people not seeking re-election. As we come back together post Covid we are reminded of the gains we made during Lockdown. At the forefront of sacrifice was my garage, I parted with a lot of things. Heather calls it rubbish, but I assured her that was not the case. I took a very large load to the dump. We are seeking all Members support with Daffodil Day Run on Sunday 23 August.. This is a very worthwhile cause as all of us are touched in some way by Cancer. Keep to the left, enjoy your motoring and travel well.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS ANNUAL REPORT AUGUST 2020.
What a year it has been. It has been full of up’s and down’s, and also 14 months long. We started the year with no nominations for the important position of Secretary or Treasurer, but Jan Dearlove and Jillian Hayton came to our rescue. Thank you very much Ladies for allowing our club to keep moving forward on an even keel. Unfortunately, we have lost some fine club members this year, but on the other hand we have gained some new members. Our challenge as a branch is to offer a balanced program of activities and events that will encourage membership participation. The first seven months of the year was fine, our events were happening and future events being planned. Then in March Covid 19 struck. It was like someone just turned the lights off. With the whole country in Lockdown, life as we knew it was put on hold. It was a strange time and something that I hope, as a country we never have to experience again. I believe that at this time we are in the “Lucky” Country. However changing times makes me think that it is time for our club to also change. The Vintage Car Club now must cater for vehicles from the early 1900’s to 1990 and beyond. We have lost nearly four months of club activities, Club nights, Club runs, Double 50 rally to name a few. So as a branch the time is ripe for some changes. We have to respect our past history and not lose sight of the efforts that the early members have put into giving us the facilities we enjoy today. For that the branch will always be grateful. However as new members join, they have a different set of requirements and I believe the main ones are to socialize with other members, cruise around in their vehicles, and have fun. When we plan activities, we keep those requirements in mind so we can improve membership participation. This is why we are going to try the vehicle sections within the branch. For this to work we need the support of members, so I would urge you all to give it a try. I would like to thank all the Committee members for their hard work and support during the past 14 months, we are a team and again I thank you. I would also like to acknowledge the support that Marcia gives me, typing all my reports and keeping me in line. Also, I would like to give our Secretary Jan Dearlove a special mention for all the work she did during the Covid 19 Lockdown. She checked all the members details, addresses, email address etc., as the only way of communicating was by email. So, thanks Jan. Finally, I would like to thank all the branch member for your fellowship over the last year and I look forward to the next year. Keep smiling and keep left. Graham Pate. Chairman.

That should give you plenty of choices. PLEASE HELP!! I am unable to carry on as Secretary, so I am really hopeful that someone will step in and take over the position. Things have been simplified and reallocated in the last few years, so there is not the pressure that there was in the past. This means that it is not nearly the huge job that it was. It needs someone who has an elementary knowledge of the internet and computer use, able to respond to, or refer on, the various queries that are received, both online and phone, and generally keep their finger on the pulse of what is happening. I have thoroughly enjoyed being the Branch Secretary. One of the parts that I have enjoyed the most is getting to know so many members and having contact with them. There is an extensive desk file with full instructions, and I will be available to assist the next Secretary in any way that I can, so please think about putting yourself forward. Enjoy the many events on offer, and be safe.

It’s so pleasing to write when our Club has got so much planned for members to enjoy. August will be dominated by our AGM but on the lighter side, the Wednesday Wanderers have a trip planned to the Toyota factory in Thames. This will be a chance to give our cars/bikes a good run. Our most worthwhile activity will be a re-jigged Daffodil Day, after it was cancelled as a National event due to Covid19. I imagine most Branches will be having a Daffodil Day to suit their members. Gaynor has got a good balanced day planned for us; motoring, socialising and fund-raising for the Cancer Society (well advertised in the Venture).
The Calendar of Events always needs a juggling of dates and decisions on what members would like to enjoy. Hopefully a balance can be achieved. The next Committee meeting will consider it and hopefully get it printed to go with the next Venture.
Members will be interested to see how much more motoring can be achieved with sections. To find out, we need to trial the thoughts/ideas, but it is people who are our Club, not our vehicles.
The AGM will elect a new Club Captain whose thoughts are more in line with our Club’s, and members generally. I will offer to be of some help to the new Club Captain if needed.

Motorcycle Motor Cycle Section As I said last mouth I was waiting for a Sunday that the weather looked promising for our first ride since our Tour in February. The 19 th of July looked ok so a message was sent to all the M/C people. Thanks to those that said they could not make it, so still hoping that we will have had a good turn out. It will be good to go to The Club House and see what changes have been made, as it is under new management. I have spoken to Ted about our annual run to Tokoroa and have asked if he would check with Murray for Saturday the 17th of October. It will be great to have a look at his plane now it is assembled and at the Tokoroa air strip. I will confirm the date when I hear back from Ted. Does any one know a place of interest we could visit or would like to arrange a run. It would good be to have one in August or September. Please give this some thought and let me know. I have the entry forms for the New Plymouth Rubber Duckie rally if any one is thinking of going, it is on the weekend of the 18/19th of September.

I know an article of fuel retailing was in the Venture, or might have been Beaded Wheels, some time back. But I noticed our Editor was short of content for the last edition, so I hope this may be of interest. Bev and I had a shed in Kaipaki Road, after moving from Raglan. Bev must have washed it in too hotter water, because it shrunk and we couldn’t fit everything in! After buying a bigger shed, I thought it would be good to have a petrol pump outside. Watching ‘Trade Me’ I noticed a petrol bowser advertised as the ‘Holy Grail’ for petrol pump collectors. Petrol bowsers preceded petrol pumps in New Zealand. They hand pumped petrol to the required amount into a site glass above the pump which was then let gravitate into the vehicle’s tank. They were invented by Sylvanus Bowser in Indiana, during 1885. They were originally used to market kerosene in the States, but soon were used world-wide for petrol. Usually they pumped out of above-ground tanks that were filled by road tankers. In New Zealand our now Veteran and Vintage vehicles were mostly still filled by tipping petrol from 4 gallon square tins – sold with 2 tins in a wooden box. The marketing of kerosene in New Zealand was important as a high percentage of tractors between the World Wars, and during WWII, were powered by kero. It was marketed in 44 gallon round drums and hand pumped into the tractor. The tractor had a small tank for petrol, which was used for starting and then the petrol was turned off and the kero on. It was important to turn the kero off when shutting down. They would not start on kero, but one could still drain the carby. Back to petrol; oil was first discovered in New Zealand in 1885 in New Plymouth. A local refinery was built in 1904 but was lost to fire and a second refinery was built in 1920 and closed in the early 70’s. The petrol produced was sold under the ‘Peak’ brand. I cannot find out when the refinery stopped producing petrol, but for the last twenty-odd years, only diesel was refined. This was sold mainly to the Local Authority for their trucks. All a far cry from today when up until 2017, the McKee field produced 48 million barrels of oil. This oil is exported as it is not suitable for the Marsden Point Refinery. Anyway, the petrol bowser advertised as the ‘Holy Grail’ was a ‘buy-now’ for a few K’s, but it was fully restored. ‘Too dear’ I thought ‘I’ll wait.’ Finished up buying one for the same price, but a rusty seized wreck with a broken glass!! Never mind – something to do sometime. Terry
