Editor’s Snippet By now the new Workshop has had its grand opening with the cut of the ribbon and it is NOW ready to be used. Please members, please make use of the workshop. If it doesn’t get used one has to ask the question, “why the hell did the club build it”? Right now there is a mini sitting in the workshop waiting to be assembled. Apparently all the bits are there and all that is required is assembly. The main component required will be manpower. Are you willing to give a hand to assemble it? The club needs the mini assembled and on its way meanwhile the committee has agreed to take on another project (see page 16). If you can lend the shed guys some of your spare time please give Andy Hammond a ring and I’m sure he will take it from there. GIVE IT SOME THOUGHT!! The AGM is just around the corner (8th June) and one of the main events is the voting of officers for the committee etc. This year the club has been run without a Club Captain and minus a committee member and it would be good for those positions to be filled. I stepped in as Editor for the interim when the elected Editor couldn’t continue in the position. To date no one has come available to take over the Editors position. I will be stepping down, so the Editors position also needs to be filled. If you think you could make yourself available for the committee please contact Heather (Secretary) and she will take it from there. Meanwhile mark the calendar for Wednesday the 8th June. There will be a number of issues on the Agenda that will need your attention. Club for Hire: As you can see I have put an advert for the clubroom hire on the front cover. A little more income for the club would be nice. Club income has been down a little due to no income from the swap meet etc etc. We have a well presented clubroom that sits idle except for three or four days a month at the most. What a waste of a facility. Spread the word everyone.

Ch a irm a n ’s Ch a tter Chairman’s Report April Welcome to yet another busy month. Life is meant to be easing up!!!! We recently hosted Megan Jolly from NZTA Waipa and Waikato Districts at our March Club night. I hope the Members all enjoyed this and mostly got some information they can use as they drive on our roads. I know I did. On Saturday Graham Pate and I attended the National Executive meeting by zoom conference. This was a first for me attending, as Graham steered me through the meeting protocol. Thanks Graham. I guess the branding proposal was the foremost in peoples mind. The branding change was defeated by the smallest of margins when it came to a regional count of Branch Delegates present. It will be interesting to see what happens next. For me it was the progress National Office is making with their computer program development. The meeting was given a live demonstration of some of the products to be released to Branch Secretaries in the coming week. The Membership applications will be online and Long Service information for a start with more to come soon. This all looked very good with some tweaks suggested by the delegates. I am sure this will be an invaluable tool for our branch and National Office. It should streamline our systems. June is our 2022 AGM for the Waikato Veteran &Vintage Car Club. Please give some serious consideration to putting yourself forward as several spots are available. It is not to arduous task, but all people have varied skills and together we can make a difference. S e c r e t a r y Secretary’s Report April Gardens were weeded, lawns mown and the club grounds looked awesome for the Workshop opening on the 6th March. Even if I say so myself. Workshop official opened, Graham Boswell welcomed everyone and thanked our sponsors especially Cambridge Lions who were very impressed with the Workshop. Terry Pidduck cut the ribbon. I have received a few more emails confirming with updates for the membership register. Appreciate your time. Not many to go now. Nice to meet and see Jane Whitfield in her Humber 90 attend the Gypsy Rose Run on the March, unfortunately Jane lost her brakes coming back to the club rooms. Thank goodness Jane had the hand brake to use. Membership 2021-2022 as soon as I have a current membership list from the NZVCC National office of Waikato members paid then I will complete the members list and email this to all members. Club night last week Megan Jolly from LTSA on “Keeping Abreast with changes on the Road”. Most of us learnt different things, for those who were unable to attend we did miss you. Clive Plumtree won the raffle. AGM is creeping up fast, no club can run without committee positions being filled. For the last year we have had no Club Captain, short of Committee Member, Aaron has kept up our face book posts and Magazine Editor Hugh is stepping down after many years off and on being the Editor. Thank you to Hugh and Aaron. Understand a lot of our members have held positions on the Waikato Branch Committee, plotted Rallies, organised events, and helped when they have been available. We would love to see you all more often and help in any way you can. More hands we have, makes work a lot lighter. Heather Secretary

M o to r c y c le Motorcycle Report April Preparation for the Mooloo isre well under way. The route has been rechecked and is just under 100 miles and with the minimum of town traffic and will suit all types of bikes,. Entries close on the 25 th of March, but please ring me if you have any concerns about entering. Our weekend tour was a great success thanks to Bob and Jillian for all the hard work they put in to ensure every thing ran smoothly, also thanks to Terry and Bev for doing the back up duties, their services were required. We had 18 bikes 1 side car 1 Morgan three wheeler with total of 24 people. Where we went and what we did is best summarise by the report written by Martin Salter (Lofty) from Whangarei, enjoy his article (see page 22). All for now, Safe Riding Peter

The Waikato Branch announces formation of an Early Eras motoring group
—The Venturers—
to cater for the special requirements of vehicles produced in the early days of motoring, and their enthusiasts.
Venturers Report - April It was with regret that it became necessary to postpone the Venturers late summer long-weekend tour to the Te Aroha region. With the ‘traffic light’ at red we could have run this event comfortably under conditions prescribed, as many other similar events have already taken place. However, with an escalating public health situation and a complete lack of member support for the event, to be fair to our service providers there was no point in continuing with arrangements that would only have to be cancelled anyway. Given some encouragement, at a suitable time in the future organisers can look at another attempt to run this event. The next opportunity to use your early era vehicles with the club will be in the Vintage Venture Rally due to be held on Sunday 15th May. Start will be from the car park of the Aero Café by the Hamilton Airport control tower in Steele Road, Rukuhia, or from a nearby alternative location, depending on business decisions. We intend a run of about 80 miles of comfortable and picturesque motoring, with just a little low-level competition to find the winners. Check out the details on the attached entry form and ensure you get your entry in to the organisers in good time. An entry of at least ten vehicles is required by the entry closing date to make it worthwhile for this event to go ahead. Should be no problem for a section with an email roll of 96, Eh? If you attended the Vero International Rally you would have seen flags all over the Venue with cars printed on them. They looked great!! Greg (Terrill) brought one along to see if any members were interested in getting one produced with their car on it. Greg said he thought they were about $65 each but please don’t hold him to it. I know we are pushing another firms barrow but wouldn’t one be good hanging up on your garage wall? HIRING Out OF CLUBROOMS Please spread the word that the clubrooms is available for hire. If you have a function coming up and don’t know where to hold it, give the clubrooms a thought. For club members it is $25 for the day/night. This cost is based around tidying up after the function. Please spread the word. Non club members can hire the clubrooms, but at a higher cost.

Road Runners Moto 60 Motoring The instigator of the Moto 60 Motoring Group Graham Pate has had a change of plans and will now be around to take the Moto 60 Group on a run he has planned.. A few weeks ago there was an article on TV about a family that had created an amazing 5 acre garden at Taumarunui after 25 years of hard work. The garden is called The Bradley Farm. It has recently been recognized as a 5 Star Garden. Along with the beautiful gardens there is also a mini Golf Course onsite and various art displays etc. Kick off is from the clubrooms at 9.30am. It is a straight run there and back with a possible coffee stop on the way. BRING A PICNIC LUNCH and have it at the venue. Once lunch is over there is a casual walk around the garden. The final participation is the Annual Championship Mini Golf Tournament where the winner will receive the coveted “Green Jacket”.
It is a four hour drive there and back. If you are keen to join the group please send Graham an email of your intensions. In this Covid environment that we are in at present, he really needs to know the numbers as low entry numbers may facilitate a cancellation of the run. Please note!! This run is NOT only for cars 1960 onwards. It is more for cars that can do 60MPH all day long irrespective of the age of the vehicle. Do you own one that can handle the speed? If yes, then come on, join the group for a great day of motoring. Think about taking your modern if you want to.

NEWS FLASH!! At a recent club night Gaynor Terrill gave us a presentation based around the new proposed logo for the Vintage Car Club. A show of hands was asked at the club night and the majority approved the new logo. Alas, at the national general meeting held recently via Zoom a vote was taken by all members present and it was declined 18 votes to 17. So there you have it. As we stand at this moment, we keep the current VCC logo 12

The club is looking for the donation of a ride on mower and a weed eater from any member that may no longer have any use for them. The cost of doing the club garden maintenance has overwhelmed our club finances. On the past the main large lawn was mowed by the generosity of a Scout Club member who is no longer doing it. The task of mowing the large lawn adjacent to the club car park has now been left to the club to mow hence the reason we need a ride on mower and trimmer. I know they are big items to get handed to us for FREE but, fingers crossed, a member may be generous enough to have the above items that they no longer require. If you have such items please give Heather (Secretary) a ring and she will be more than willing to pass on your generosity to the committee.

Motoring in Cambridge The first motor car in Cambridge arrived in 1905 and was owned by Mr James Sinclair of the Masonic Hotel. It was a White Steam Car, and took an hour to raise sufficient steam to get the car mobile. Two early petrol cars were Hugh Ferguson’s Vauxhall and Frank Bunyard’s French Vinot – both were small two-seaters, five horse power, two speeds forward and no re-
verse, tiller steering and chain-driven. Cambridge was bounding into the motoring age. From the Independent newspaper 11 August 1906 “Motor cars are becoming almost as numerous as stray cows. Messrs Souter & A Wilkinson are the latest to import one of these modern pace eaters”. This was a two-seater, five hp ‘Starling’ imported originally from the Star Cycle Works in Wolverhampton, England. This car had a steering wheel, three forward speeds and reverse. But as Neville Souter said at a meeting of the Historical Society in 1969, “Beauty was only
skin deep and the car was passed on to someone in Waihi and replaced with a 10 hp Cadillac. This was a real car.” H J Jefferies the Post Master invested in a 12 hp Darracq in October 1906, capable of seating six people and with a steering column gear change. Miss Jefferies was the first local to drive a car over the Victoria Bridge on 14 December 1907.
Also in 1907 the first Ford in New Zealand was imported by W Souter & Co and sold to Mr R B Cranwell in 1908. The motor industry was developing quickly and Souters held the Ford agency for the Auckland Province. Their Cadillac was sold on to W F Buckland and in 1908 William Thornton (Cadillac – learning to drive in an afternoon), Henry Greenslade 18
(Oldsmobile) and Boston Couper, all joined the motoring fraternity. Among
others Dr E E Roberts bought a Cadillac, Frank Ross a Diamler and the next year Dr Edmonds and Arch Deacon W Willis both had Cadillacs, bringing the total cars for the district to 14.Jared Allwill, a farmer at Hautapu, was to make history by buying the first Model T Ford in Cambridge in 1910. According to Neville Souter it was a left-hand drive, had neither hood, windscreen nor lamps and cost £375.
In 1910, Mr A Hopkirk imported a fine new Humber 15 hp car, complete with all accessories. January 1912 “Mr Carr has got a new car” was the topical joke around town. Sam Lewis joined the ranks of Ford buyers as did Hunter & Banks the local land agents. In 1912, R T Tudehope bought a Krit car and the Independent reports “after taking two or three lessons is quite a proficient driver”. C H Priestley bought the first Warren in Cambridge – 30 hp, five-seater and of very handsome design. By 1916 Souters were selling on average a car a day (over the Auckland province) and at this time they ended their Ford franchise, turning to Dodge and several other makes. In 1918 new bylaws had to be put in place. Certificates of Competency had to be obtained by drivers and all licensed vehicles inspected for efficient brakes, sounding signals and lamps. Speeds were limited to 15 mph in Duke Street and along Victoria Street from the Hamilton Road corner to Victoria Bridge. Any other street was restricted to 20 mph and 8 mph around corners. Neville Souter took control of W Souter & Co in 1923 and sold to Bruce Boyle in 1961 when new showrooms, office and workshop were being built. Neville Souter died February 1976. Now the motor industry has gone from the west side of Duke Street. 19
New Zealand's first fatal car accident
8 September 1906
Janet Meikle became the first
person in New Zealand to be killed in an accident caused directly by a car when her 8-hp De Dion Bouton – the most common model in the colony at
the time – went over a bank on the family farm, Table Downs, in the Washdyke Valley about 5 km from Timaru. The colony’s first two cars had been imported by Wellington businessman William McLean just eight years earlier. Meikle lost control while negotiating a steep, narrow, muddy descent. The car scraped along a fence before overturning into a ploughed paddock, pinning her beneath it. Her husband John suffered a fractured thigh and could do nothing to help her as she suffocated. This sort of accident was common in the early decades of motoring. While cars were slow by today’s standards, they had few safety features and their occupants were likely to be thrown out in a collision. The South Canterbury Automobile Club expressed its regret and sympathy and asked that its members attend the funeral three days later – ‘without

Cars’. The couple had a four-year-old daughter. Janet Meikle was an ‘expert’ and ‘particularly cool’ driver with several years’ experience behind the wheel. Many rural women drove cars in the early decades of the 20th century, as they were the ones who went into town for supplies while their husbands worked long hours on the land. New Zealand’s first motorcycle fatality had occurred in Dunedin the previous year, when Alfred Price was killed by a train after falling from his machine. There were no witnesses to the late-night accident and it was unclear whether there had been a collision. The arrival of mass-produced Model T Fords in 1909 made motoring more affordable, and by 1921 there were 69 deaths on New Zealand roads. The
worst year has been 1973, with 843 deaths. Thanks to modern safety features, the annual road toll has not exceeded 400 since 2007, despite there being many more vehicles on the roads

Waikato VCC Motorcycle Tour 2022 25-27th February 2022 Well I’ve just completed my second tour and what a delight it was. The tour is a biannual event and limited to about 24 entrants. The club was represented this year by Cam, Brian, Robert and myself, with 6 from the Auckland branch and 9 from the Waikato branch along with a couple of others from Rotorua and Waihi. The program consisted of a run on Friday afternoon leaving the VCC club rooms at Cambridge around 1.30pm and biking through predominately back roads to the Holden Bay motor camp on the edge of Lake Rotorua. Saturday saw us head south and east to to Muapara and the Galatea Valley to stop and visit a unique collection of beer cans, the largest in the world to be precise at some A small portion of the beer can collection thirteen thousand (that’s right 13,000) Supposedly every can produced in the world dating back to the early 1930s. In addition the owner had an impressive Ford car collection including the much sort after Falcon 351 GTO in pristine condition. Then it was across the road to see the brothers collection of tractors. . From here it was off to the lunch stop at Lake Aniwhenua which was formed by the construction of a 10m high hydro dam. Two of the team were involved in the construction process and had arranged a visit to the hydro station, however the powers that be had other ideas and it was in lockdown mode. So off we went Regrouping and afternoon tea for the afternoon run heading north 22
and passing over the impressive Matahina dam and power station and on to TeTeko not far from Edgecombe. Then we headed west past lakes Roto Ma and Roto Ehu before reaching lake Rotorua and returning to our digs for a well earned break and sumptuous tea. Sunday morning saw us head south west on SH30 before joining SH1. At Kinleith we turned off onto old Taupo Road and skirted Tokoroa and Putaruru before arriving at Tirau for a late morning tea come lunch. From hear it was more back roads before arriving back at the Cambridge clubrooms for a welcome cuppa. A total of 451 Km (282 miles) was covered in near perfect weather conditions for biking. Back up was provided by Terry and Bev Pidduck of the Waikato Branch, who provided transport for baggage and whose trailer was required later on to ferry two bikes which had broken down. A big thanks go to Bob Hayton for the excellent route and instructions and his wife Gillian who provided all the food and beautifully cooked meals.

First Aircraft Since Richard Pearse 1903? Please forgive me for diverting away from old cars for a couple of pages but I thought some members may be interested?
I recently had the privilege of being invited to the first test flight of an aircraft that was designed and built at Hamilton airport. As mentioned in the heading we think it may be the first aircraft that has been designed from scratch and built from scratch in New Zealand since 1903. If I am wrong let me know. Yes, we have had many planes copied from overseas models or assembled etc in NZ but none from what I can find out that have been developed from the ground up in NZ. It has been 10 years in the making and quite an achievement for it’s designer and manufacturer Paul Vickers. I have followed the development of this aircraft for many years. It’s very much a credit to its designer and all the aircraft engineers that have worked tirelessly to produce such a magnificent flying machine. It has been designed as a float plane but for testing purposes it had a fixed undercarriages attached. The final aircraft will have an undercarriage that will fold up into the aircraft for water landings. For the record the aircraft is called “The Wave” For a better understanding of the aircraft Google Vickers Aircraft Hamilton and you will learn all about it.
After many high speed runs up and down the runway and slight modifications in between the runs the aircraft was finally ticked off as ready for its maiden test flight. For the record the test pilot for the maiden flight was an American Air Force test pilot who now resides in Queenstown. The aircraft taxied to the main runway and was accompanied by a PAC CT4 Airtrainer as backup and a Robinson R44 chopper was close by for taking photographs while the aircraft was in the air. All guests were allowed to walk close to the edge of the main runway to see the first takeoff which was very much the a privilege of being a guest. After the first flight the test pilot disembarked from the aircraft with a big crin on his face which kind’a said it all about the flying characteristics of the plane. He seemed extremely happy. After much celebrating and drinking of champagne and listening to speeches 24
I had the pleasure of chatting to the test pilot. Naturally the conversations was based around the flying characteristics of the plane. He was wrapped. He went on to say that it was extremely light and positive on the controls with plenty of power to spare and all ‘n’ all a lovely aircraft to fly. So there you have it, a lovely aircraft has been designed, built and will eventually be manufactured at Hamilton Airport for the local and world market . All the bits are there and all the is required is assembly. On saying that all the bits are there buit the club will still have to invest a little money to complete the car. Call the money spent an investment, as Hugh has said that he is quite willing to see the car sold once completed to assist the club finances.
The proposition was presented to the committee at the last meeting where it was approved by all. The club is now officially the owner of a 1918 Studebaker Light Four Roadster. All the club has to do now is assemble it. The main tool required in the future for the assembly work is manpower. If you would like to assist in the assembly of the Studebaker watch this space and the club will announce when the car is based at the clubs new workshop. Please keep in mind the shed is for short term maintenance not major overhauls. For obvious reasons a car cannot remain on the hoist for days as other members will want to use it.
Oh well members, it is finally your shed to use, so make the most of it. The days of crawling under your car are over. In this day and age of 40% of cars being rejected on a warrant no doubt the shed will be well used.
