Editor’s Snippet This year is moving on at a great rate, wouldn’t you agree? As I fill out the Events Page I have listed the AGM for the 9th June. At this rate June is just around the corner. Have you ever thought of going on the committee? More importantly have you ever thought of picking up the baton as Editor of this Magazine?? If you have an inkling to “give it a go” and you want a few questions answered before your final decision pleased don’t hesitate to contact me and I’ll answer any concerns you may have. As mentioned above, If not the Editor, maybe a committee position? Give it some thought. As you can see the Double 50 Entry Form is in your Venture envelope and on the club website. Give some serious thought to entering this years DOUBLE 50 RALLY. If you haven’t entered a Double 50 for some time then please, for the sake of the organisers, think about entering it this year. A good turnout is the best reward you can give the organisers. As most are aware, it is open to all classes, so no matter what club eligible car you drive, you are eligible to enter. It has been plotted by a very experience couple so should be an excellent run. Without giving too much away, the main prize giving dinner is at a very prestigious private school. Enough said, see you at the Double 50 this year? The proposed shed has progressed, with the council attending a meeting at the clubrooms. The result of that meeting is in the form of an email from the council. See page 14

Ch a irm a n ’s Ch a tter CHAIRMANS REPORT, APRIL 2021 April will be a busy month for the Motorcyclists, finally being able to hold their Mooloo Meander. This event was cancelled last year due to the dammed Covid, so I wish them all the best for this year. Some members might not realize that I won the Moloo Meander one year. It was a lot of fun. Another event that was cancelled last year was our Double Fifty Rally. This year it is back on again, so I urge all members to come along and join in. If rallying isn’t your thing then come along and do the tour. When touring there are no silent checks, no questions, and no timing, it is just a nice cruisy tour. So please come along and support the organizers who put so much time and effort into organizing our major event for the year. Our shed project is now moving ahead again after the delay caused by the council, has been resolved. After having a site meeting with the council and the shed and branch committee we managed to persuade the council that our original siting of the shed is the best one for the clubs’ interests. So, our building consent has been resubmitted and we know it has been accepted because we have received the invoice for the building consent. To remind you, the subcommittee looking after the project are, Terry Pidduck, Andy Hammond, Graham Holmes, Paul Johnson and Graham Boswell. As Chairman I am automatically on every subcommittee. So, if you have any questions regarding the shed project please contact one of the committee members. As members you will all be aware that our branch AGM is coming up in June, the 9th of June to be exact which will come around very quickly. So, you have plenty of notice that I am advising you all that I will definitely NOT be standing as Chairman again. I have been a member of the Waikato Branch for nearly 21 years and during that time I have been a committee member, Club Captain, and Chairman for a total of 7 years. I feel that I have done enough and would like time off to relax and enjoy club activities. Your club needs a new hand on the tiller, some fresh and younger blood to guide it into the future. The club, like the world is changing. Becoming more relaxed and more social, more fun and more people orientated. I would like to see a woman Chairman, or Chairperson. There has not been a woman in this position since 1999, when Leslie Webster was the Chairman, or President as it was then. SO, LADIES THE FLOOR IS YOURS step up to the plate and put your mark on our club. I of course will be staying on as immediate Past Chairman for a further 12 Months. So, I have given you all enough notice to think about whether you, or someone you know that would like to be the Chairman of the Branch. Please contact me if you want to have a chat. Club Captains Report - April 2021 Hi everyone, the year is speeding away, as autumn snaps at our heels. If you missed the recent Club night we had a good turn out to see and hear from Sue and Reece Burnett as they presented period clothing of the Art Deco times. They gave a few tips on how to alter and use clothing items to produce the desired look for the era. Thank you Sue and Reece for your presentation, it was much enjoyed. At next month’s Club night (on 14 April) Graeme L and Hugh present a “night at the movies”. They will be showing the classic Genevieve complete with Jaffa’s and Ice Cream. I hope you are all focused on several important Club Rallies namely the Vintage Venture on 16 May and our Clubs Double 50 Rally at Queen’s weekend. The preparations are coming along well for Double 50, entry form enclosed in the envelope with the Venture, fill it in and get it back to Jillian. The costs have been kept to a minimum so all can enter. It is a lovely country run through the Waikato countryside with no metal and no townships along the way. Recently 10 cars and 30 people attended “the Fish and chip” run to Kaiaua. Although numbers were down it was a great drive and great fish and chips were enjoyed by all. It was a lovely day with a little sea breeze along the way. It saddened me to have to pull the pin on this year’s Twilight Rally. This was as a result of no one being willing to plot a run and a meal. As Volunteers we can only do so much, as Club members if everyone did a bit the load would not fall on a few. Shed Report Council has agreed to our positioning of the new shed on the grass near the parts department, and the permit has been lodged. As soon as TotalSpan have been able to come up with a time frame for the building of the new shed, we will be able to start excavating and lay the concrete pad. Watch this space! And no, you don't have to come with a shovel and a wheelbarrow, we've been promised the use of a digger and truck. Onwards (then downwards) and upwards! Your Shed Committee. M o to r c y c le Our run on Sunday the 7th was well attended with more people from the areas joining us at Whatawhata for our pub lunch. Bob has very kindly done a report under the title March Motorcycle Madness. The entry form from the Mooloo missed the Venture but I have emailedit out to all the M/C members I have emailed addresses for. If I have missed someone who would like to enter please drop me an email (paspiller@xtra.co.nz) the entry form will also be on our website. We are currently rechecking the route that was plotted last year and insuring all other items that we had arranged are still ok? Please can I have your entries in ASAP as this helps greatly with numbers for booking meals etc All for now. Safe riding Peter MARCH MOTORCYCLE MADNESS Another good turnout for the Motorcycle Group run on the first Sunday of March. More than a dozen bikes from the 1950’s to the 1980’s collected at our lubrooms before heading off on a scenic tour via Ohaupo and Te Pahu on country roads to Whatawhata for a convivial lunch at the local hostelry. Another half dozen from the areas to the west had gone straight there, so we were a decent sized party by the time the food hit the table, and very sociable too. Our afternoon visit was not far away, to inspect the Ken Haine collection of early mechanical transport and agricultural machines. The cars, including a nice Super Six Hudson sedan and a more diminutive Rugby were interesting, but it was the old fire engines and the collection of unusual tractors that grabbed the attention of most. This was especially true when firing up one of the three impressive, British produced Field Marshall tractors with a single sharp blow to the ignition cartridge. An apologetic ‘It won’t go, it won’t go’ from Ken was rewarded with instantaneous success and a great deal of smoke and fumes – great fun! Quite a collection of early iron tucked away in those sheds – Ken clearly has no problems of the ‘nothing to do’ variety and was generous with his time for our group of riders, who were equally grateful for the shelter afforded by his sheds when a tremendous shower of rain passed overhead. That over, a homeward ride saw people break off as their road home diverged from the return to Cambridge after a successful day out on old bikes. It’s not true that you have to be as mad as a March hare to ride these old machines, but some would say ‘It helps!’ Kick starting, fuel and ignition under manual control or somewhat dodgy suspension are the lot of some, whilst others have taken to installing electric starters as a means of keeping the old girls out and about as the desire for manual exertion fades. But, it seems, the love of the open road and wind in your face as well as the camaraderie of those similarly afflicted doesn’t disappear at anything like the same rate. ‘Stay Upright’. 7

The Waikato Branch announces formation of an Early Eras motoring group
—The Venturers— to cater for the special requirements of vehicles produced in the early days of motoring, and their enthusiasts.
Venturers Report for April 2021 Venture At the time of writing our inaugural event, a weekend touring trip to the Waitomo region, is just a few days away. The various route instruction sets, a visit to a place of interest and the Saturday evening meal arrangements are all made and await our involvement. Waitomo is quiet these days, so we will create a little local interest for sure. The next opportunity after the weekend tour for early era motoring will be the annual branch Vintage Rally in mid-May being organised this year by Dave Nordell. Not many details available just yet, but it is normally a great event to get involved with, so don’t let the old girl’s WoF lapse and registration go on hold, or you’ll likely miss a heap of good motoring. As has been clarified previously, the Venturers Group co-ordinators role is just that, not to organise every group event. So, any suggestions or offers to take the reins for a day will be welcomed. We envisage a visit, even by modern car perhaps, to a place of interest on the last weekend of June, so put your thinking caps on and your hand up! Alan Sharp, Bob Hayton and Terry Pidduck.

Moto 60 Run Report Sunday 7th March 15 cars gathered outside the Fire Pot Café at Gordonton for a 10.45 start to travel North to Hampton Downs via the many lovely back roads of the Waikato popping out at Te Kauwhata with a further 10 minute run via back roads to Hampton Downs Café. If you have never been to Hampton Downs Café then you are missing out on a motoring experience. As the cover photo shows you are having your coffee surrounded by many familiar race cars seen on TV. The backdrop to the car display is the Toyota Racing Team workshop. The rear of the café has a wall of glass 11

Proposed Shed Progress The following is a cut and paste of an email received from the Waipa District Council after an onsite meeting at the clubrooms with the Shed Committee etc. Hi Graham Thank you and the members of the Club for meeting with us last week and explaining the Club’s reasons for siting the shed where proposed by yourselves. After considering this information and looking at possible alternative locations, we agree that the most logical place to site the workshop shed is where proposed by the Club as it will then be close to both the parts store and tool storage. On this basis, Council is happy to approve a Totalspan shed, as set out in your email and attachments of 9 November 2020, being erected on the Club’s site on the following conditions: that the Club obtains any consents it requires; that all work is completed within three months from the start date; that the Club is responsible for establishing if there are any underground services running through the site before carrying out any digging; upon the expiration or termination of the Club’s lease or any subsequent lease entered into between the Club and Council, the Club will remove the workshop shed and reinstate the grounds to the condition they were in prior to these works at its own cost; and that the Club is responsible for maintaining the shed in a good condition, including removing any graffiti, and will undertake any remedial works required to keep the shed in a good condition and state of presentation as soon as possible. Moto 60 Run on Sunday the 7th March that looks into the Toyota Racing Teams workshop where you will see Toyota Racing Team mechanics working on single seaters and rally cars etc. The feed back from all was very positive with a reminder told to all that the next run for the Moto60 Group will be to Rotorua on the 23rd May. For the record Hampton Downs has a Car & Bike Show on the last Sunday of each month. Apparently well worth going to. 13

MOTOR TRIPS Cambridge to Taranaki A DELIGHTFUL DRIVE.
Motor tours are becoming an increasingly popular form of spending a holiday, and during the past month or so there must have been thousands of people indulging in motor drives through various parts of the country. Hundreds of cars have passed through Cambridge since the holidays commenced, a great many conveying picnic and camping parties, bound for Horahora, Arapuni, Rotorua, Tauranga, Taupo, and many other parts. Quite a number of Cambridge motorists have this year motored through to New Plymouth, Wanganui, and Palmerston North, the improved roads making this route easily negotiable, while the country passed through is exceedingly beautiful. Several of those who have lately undertaken this trip inform us that the road does not present any serious difficulties to motoring. The portion of the road between the Awakino ferry and Mokau, which has been such a nightmare to motorists during bad weather, is now much improved. Metalling operations on an extensive scale are now proceeding apace on this few miles of road, and in a short time this last connecting link between Taranaki and Auckland will be completed. All the motorists agree that the scenery, especially between Te Kuiti and Awakino, and again over Mt Messenger, is most attractive and beautiful. A motorist who last Monday left Cambridge for Wanganui, in a Ford car, informs us that he did not have occasion to change gears during the whole journey. From Cambridge to New Plymouth a distance of approximately 150 miles, is just a comfortable day’s journey. Several local residents have done the distance, including stoppages for refreshments, in about nine hours. From New Plymouth to Palmerston North is another day’s easy journey, with no motoring difficulties to contend with. One Cambridge motorist, who returned this week covered almost exactly 1000 miles during his trip – without a puncture or mis-adventure of any kind. Thanks Kathryn (Parsons) Club Archivist 16
Club Night 12th May
For anyone familiar with the North side of Cambridge will have seen a massive building going up over the last couple of years. So who owns this building and what is it for? It is owned by Architectural Profiles Limited better known as APL . The building itself is one of the country’s largest industrial builds. Once completed, the 44,000 square metre factory will produce APL hardware for windows and doors and glassware under the company’s new business AGP (Architectural Glass Products) The guest speaker is Mitch Plaw, a major shareholder of APL. This should be a “must attend club night”. Having seen the building close up, it would be interesting to hear the ins and outs of its construction and better still, what they will be manufacturing and how much they will manufacture etc etc. I could be wrong, but I heard they would be taking on an extra 60-70 more staff once the plant is up and running.
See you at the Club Night Wednesday12th May A Blonde woman was speeding down the road in her little red sports car and was pulled over by a woman police officer, who was also a blonde. The Blonde Cop asked to see the blonde driver’s license. She dug through her purse and was getting progressively more agitated. ‘What does it look like?’ she finally asked. The policewoman replied, ‘It’s square and it has your picture on it.’ The driver finally found a square mirror in her purse, looked at it and handed it to the policewoman. ‘Here it is,’ she said. The Blonde officer looked at the mirror, then handed it back saying, “OK, you can go. I didn’t realize you were a cop…” 17
A Wild Goose Chase Many of our members will know of the green 1924 Cadillac V63 Tourer restored by Danny and Vicki Ryan over twenty years ago, which had also passed through the hands of our past member, Barrie Grant. It is now in the ownership of our member Anita Patterson. For some time, I have been researching information for a Beaded Wheels story about this car and a second companion Cadillac, a 1928 model 341A 7-passenger Limousine also owned at the same time in the 1930’s by the owners of the Te Awamutu Hotel (nowadays known as Station 32), EH ‘Nudger’ Cucksey and his wife Mabel. This second Caddie seemed to have disappeared, but various records which have come to light suggest a series of local area owners before it went south more than forty years ago. A detail that Grant Patterson had recorded suggests this move might have been to a Mr McLachlan, after passing through the local hands of Messrs Alfred & Edward Brown (of Cambridge Service Station), Dennis Kelly and an R. Plaw of Hautapu. A search of the internet for the name brought up the manager of Oxford Classic Restorations Ltd registered in Bush Road, Oxford. As our motorcycle friend, David Warren had recently moved to Bush Road he was, after some local enquiries, eventually able to find that McLachlan was still living in the area and put us in touch. A visit we made recently brought forth more detail about this purchase and some photos, one of which is claimed to be of a Colin Higgins of Taylor Street, Cambridge who sold him the car (with silver/black rego. DB2686) in July 1979. An ownership paper records an earlier owner as Elaine Heaslip of Victoria Road, Cambridge in November 1964 – about the time that the silver/black permanent NZ registration plates were first issued. As this model of Cadillac would have been fairly uncommon in the area at the time, it is quite possible that a chain of early ownership has now been uncovered, but some more confirmation would clinch it. McLachlan is a mine of Cadillac information, having kept detailed records of the many vehicles that have passed through his hands. He had intended to keep the car for his own use, but later sold it to an Aucklander, David Merryweather, for whom he set about doing some restoration in his Canterbury workshop. The car eventually went up to the City of Sails and was at Gulf Motor Bodies when Danny Ryan comes back into the picture. Enquiring about parts for his V63 restoration, Danny found that the car was available, unfinished, and bought it from Merryweather who appears to have lost interest, so it came back to Hamilton. A visit to Danny and his records do confirm it was indeed the same car, so now he had both cars! However, when other projects came along he passed it on again to Phil Dunstan, who 18
has since completed the job and the 341A Caddie now resides at the Wanaka car museum for visitors to enjoy. It also goes out with Phil for the occasional wedding, sometimes in company with the V16 Cadillac now residing at WOW, which also once used to live with Barrie. Any information about the 341A Cadillac or the many possible interim owners in the Cambridge region would be very much appreciated. At least, I now have my goose! Bob Hayton

Art Deco Here We Come A great evening was had by all. No more wearing Just Jean shorts to Art Deco anymore. Sue & Reece Burnett were generous enough to depart with all their knowledge when it comes to what to wear with what, as you prepare your wardrobe for a weekend away to Napier and Art Deco. The evening was not only going to be an informative evening with Sue & Reece it was also advertised as a place to hock off your surplus art deco clothing. With this in mind the evening started with members bringing along suitcases and hangers full of art deco clothes that they no longer had use for due to “shrinkage” or that were superfluous to requirements. By the time the tables were laid out with clothes along with hangers of suits and frocks the clubrooms available space was filling up fast. Seats were all filled with standing room only. A really good turnout. The evening went on until late with much bargaining done between buyer and seller after Sue & Reece completed their informative presentation. A big thanks must go to Sue & Reece for the effort they put in to the evening. It must have taken them most of a day to get all their outfits laid out for the evening. Before I close I must make comment about the individual that modelled the 1920 style bathing suit. The bathing suit didn’t do justice to the models body but it’s all I had to work with. Hugh
