Editor’s Snippet Hi Everyone Welcome to the April Venture. We are reminded that Winter is just around the corner. I ,like many of you will be making the annual pilgrimage to Whangamata this weekend. Hopefully the Indian summer lasts for another week for this great spectacle of cars and great fun. This month’s Venture contains the Double 50 Entry Form. The Committee would like to see a good turn out for our annual event. This years Double 50 has been organised and plotted by Bob & Glenys Braddock, it will be a great event. So fill the entry out and get back into them. A big thank you to those people who are now receiving their Venture by email. As postage seems to be ever increasing and the service getting slower the Committee has to ask the question of ourselves regarding the best format for communications with the Membership. It seems to be the season for weddings, I used my 55 Chev last weekend and will be using my 39 Chev for friends wedding in May. It is always an interesting journey with young people as you carry them to and from their wedding, you sure feel part of the process!!.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter HI FOLKs By the time you get this the Vintage Venture and the Ladies Rally will be done and dusted and you will have sold all those no longer wanted bits and pieces at the Boot sale. April kicks off with the MooLoo Meander, the Twilight rally has been shifted to the 19th May as Jeremy’s Bonnets in the Back Blocks that had to be abandoned last year because of road closures an washouts has taken that April date. Thurs 25th Anzac Day is the trolley Derby through Cambridge. The training day for Double 50 has been cancelled through lack of interest however one new member has requested some pointers so that will be done on that day so if you change your mind feel free to come along. Had a letter from the Webster’s declining to plot the next Veteran Rally in which they state that there are so few Veterans it does not make sense to take one out to be plotter. However, and I’m not having a go at the Webster’s as they have done more than their fair share for this club, this is a specialist Rally and needs to be plotted by a person who knows Veteran Cars and their limits. Some of these cars have less power than a geriatric Chairman on a push bike with a flat tyre and to have someone who doesn’t understand them plot a Rally is Courting disaster. If the Veteran Section wants to keep their Rally they need to find their own plotter. The Club is happy to provide a date on the national calendar, provide man power be the Banker, cover any loses within reason take any profits without reason. This goes for all Rallies not just the Veteran rally or we may end up saying such and such a rally won’t be held this year as nearly happened with Double 50. We are fast approaching a cross roads with these rallies and the lights are on Amber it’s up to you the members as to whether they turn Red or Green. SECRETARY’S REPORT Well here we are again and still the weather is brilliant with quite few runs going on for you to attend so hope your making the most of it before the weather changes. 25/35/50 and 60 year badges are being researched at the moment so if any member thinks they are eligible to receive one of these badges please let us know so we can start the process without missing any member who may be entitled. At last night’s club night we had a very informative talk from Greg Terrill about the next “Festival of motoring” in New Plymouth in 2021 sounds like it will be more relaxing, more looking at the countryside and more catching up with old friends from all over NZ. No doubt you will hear more of the arrangements as time goes by. I’m told that all 40 “Soap Box Derby’s” are sold so no doubt there is a lot of work being done to get them road worth and ready for racing, should be a great day out with lots of laughs, and the day again is 25th of April in the main street of Cambridge. The date for scrutineering will be early April, to be confirmed by email to all participants. Just a reminder that the next AGM is in June so please consider stepping up for the Secretary’s position as I will be stepping down. Next club night is the 10th of April. See you there. Derek 5
C lu b C a p t a in Club Captain’s Report – March 2019 With so much coming up, we have not had a lot of motoring since the last Venture. A good run in the country was enjoyed by the Wednesday Wanderers, especially those who were good at answering questions. At the last committee meeting the rescheduled weekend away was noted to clash with the Twilight Run. The Twilight Run is now replacing the Club Run on May 19th. Folks organising Rallies enjoy doing so much more, when the event is supported. It would be a pity not to have as many Rallies. Perhaps it would be better to keep the competitive side going, but make the finish of the day more social. My survey’s comments from members suggested the interest in Rallies is not that strong compared to more social motoring. At our last Club night, Greg Terrill promoted our Club’s International Festival of Historic Motoring to be held in New Plymouth on 17th – 22nd January 2021. He explained the ‘workings’ of the organising Committee and a little about the members and their respective roles. The Committee is determined to do better than the last one held in Dunedin. He also answered the criticism of inviting a well- known guest from overseas to the Festival. Briefly, a wellknown guest gets the media interested in the Festival that just can’t be achieved otherwise. This means our sponsors get more exposure and value for their investment, which in turn means hopefully their continued support for the future. The organising Committee is seeking sponsorship for a guest so the cost is not part of the participation fees. Committee have decided not to have a General Meeting for the Project/ Equipment shed concept and Rule Changes because it was too close to the AGM and both could be addressed then. Terry 6
Motorcycle Motorcycle We had a good turn out on Saturday the 10th for our social run that Murray very kindly plotted. The ride took us mainly on back roads to Patetonga to the Italian Bakery & Expresso for lunch, but who would have believe it, we had rain while we were there, after all the fine weather we have been having. Soon it was time to set off for home, SH27 is not the best of roads at any time but in rain, not good, Paul Hanes said, don’t worry it will be fine when you turn off to Tahuna and is was. I forgot to mention last month about another thing that happened while we were at the Classic Races. Some of you will remember Chris and his Helicopter powered motor bike we saw last year. Well he was there with his bike and while my friend and I were having a close look at it Chris arrived to do a demo ride, so we had a very close up view of the bike starting up, what a fantastic Machine. All is about ready for the Mooloo, route has been checked and ready for printing, sponsors are supplying prizes which are starting to come in, all we need is your entry. We are planning to have another social ride on the 12th May, can someone please arrange or suggest a visit or to have lunch somewhere. All for now Safe Riding, Peter 7

Club Night 13th March ALAN GRANT will speak to the club on behalf of St John. Alan Is a Regional Governor for the Midlands District for St John—a voluntary position . Alan has been a Volunteer in the ambulance in Cambridge as well. I have asked Alan to share with Club members his journey from a young Corporate working with Winstone’s and KFC—stationed in the USA –(not making the secret herbs and spices either) but plotting the way forward in the South Pacific for Pepsi cola. Alan is an accomplished speaker, mentor and trainer and will tell you how he has ended up living in Cambridge and helping out the very worthy cause—St John. We will get him to give us a demo on the defibrator as well. Or maybe start your car with it. Don’t miss this one!

25th Vintage Venture Rally Sunday morning we woke to another beautiful Day and a chance to go out in our Model A which these days seems to be a rare occasion. David and Mary Thomson rally plotters had us starting at the Thames pumphouse where we could bring our lunch and have a look around before first car away between 12.30 and 12.45pm.
There were approximately 11 cars . It was just a wonderful relaxing afternoon , we had a lovely run thru the wonderful rolling countryside leaving Hauraki thru the plains of Ohinewai across to Whitikau, back into the Matamata /Waikato districts before finally heading into Cambridge to finish up a the Waikato VVCC clubrooms for afternoon tea and prize giving . We had to estimate how long it would take us, we were at least 8 to 12 mins faster than we thought. But we had plenty of laughs along the way as Mary & David had given us a few Brain teasers to do which gave our brains a workout. We thought we’d done okay, but when the results were read out. THANK-YOU David and Mary for your efforts you put on a Fabulous run and the members who didn’t make it you missed an awesome run. 25th VINTAGE VENTURE 2019 - The Long Way home. The day started early to pick up Tony and Judy at 9 am for our venture to Thames using back roads. We enjoyed a lovely lunch of fish and chips watching the trains go by. We met at the Pumphouse in Bella Street with 8 vintage cars and a few VCC members. Mary & David Thomson handed out the instructions and two extra sheets with questions and a very cryptic sheet of letters, we thought it would be related to the route but know it was just to keep us busy along the way back to Cambridge. We were asked how long it would take us to get back and then sent us on our way. The route took on SH2 to Waitakaruru and headed in the direction of Waiterimu using roads we had not used in recent years. Eventually taking us onto Whitikahu Rd a little more gravel road back onto tar seal and using Waverley Rd we eventually arrived a Eureka. NEARLY HOME!! From here we went through Tauwhare left into Victoria Rd, Zig Zag Rd (we had already done a bit of zigging and zagging) and back to the clubrooms for afternoon tea. The entrants consisted of 3 Model A’s, Model T, Essex, Dodge flying the stars and stripes flag and the union jack was represented by Triumph and a Humber and it was the Triumph of Steve and Cazna Payne were the winners, Bob and Jillian Hayton in the Dodge 2nd and Wilbur and Aileen Brown in the Humber was 3rd. Thanks to Mary and David for the efforts and time plotting the rally, the helpers for doing afternoon tea etc. Team Model A

26th NATIONAL VCC MOTORCYCLE RALLY – BLENHEIM Four Branch members, Steve Walter (1946 BSA), Kelvin Mitchell (1956 Ariel), Bob and Jillian Hayton (1929 Norton and 1975 Honda respectively) had entered for this year’s National Motorcycle Rally held 15-17 February and made their way to the venue at Brayshaw Park, Blenheim in different ways. Steve rode all the way, Kelvin trailered, whilst the other two took bikes in their van. Amongst the 190 entries there were 12 Veteran machines, 29 Vintage, 16 PV, 71 PW, 48 P60 and 14 P80 ranging from 1911 to 1988 – quite a comprehensive mix for enthusiasts to enjoy when all lined up on The Green at Rally HQ. The weekend kicked off with a Meet ‘n Greet at the Marlborough Convention Centre on Friday evening where old friends could re-acquaint, followed by the various rally rides on Saturday then a show day and mini-gymkhana at Omaka Airfield on the Sunday. Starting from Brayshaw Park on the outskirts of town, the rally routes initially all ran together for the timed section which included a lap of the old Hawkesbury racing circuit. Then whichever route you had previously chosen took you through local vineyard country before running out to Renwick and Havelock, along Queen Charlotte Drive to Picton, or even out to Waikawa and over the hill to Port Underwood then down a metalled road to Rarangi for the more adventurous riders. Tua Marina School was the location for a lunch break before heading back by various routes to Blenheim to prepare for the evening social time. Here an entertaining talk by racing legend Graham Crosby had the crowd listening and laughing. An informative booklet in our rally packs had given some detail on the regional activity, history and also a glimpse of the earlier rally and racing events held hereabouts in the past, so plenty to talk about. Sunday’s short ride took us to Omaka Airfield for a line-up and display to the public, where entrants could get a discounted entry to the Peter Jackson inspired world war aircraft displays, watch some aerobatic flying over the airfield, do their field tests or just laze in the sun and talk bikes. Particularly impressive amongst the display machines were the seven in-line four cylinder bikes from Indian, Henderson and Ace all grouped together, and a line-up of Veterans including those ridden by well known Dutch visitors Geert, Mark and Harry de Boer. Then it was time for another gathering at the Convention Centre for prize-giving, a dissection of the weekend’s riding and of future plans. Amongst the prize-winners was our man Kelvin Mitchell who took away first place in the Post War Class. A great discussion followed on the time and location for the next event, many present not happy about having to wait for three years due to an international VCC event in 2021, calling for ‘something to be done about it’ by the National Management and Executive. No doubt we will learn soon enough if they have their listening ears on! As usual, with the rally over, the following days were taken up in regional touring, visits, a novel and interesting boat trip with the bikes out to Torea Bay and a ride back, followed by a tour to Hanmer Springs to end the event. Unfortunately, with fire risk extreme, those wishing to do this trip via the Molesworth Station road were to be disappointed as it had been closed. Then many either headed straight for home, or to one of the many ‘one make’ rallies which had been arranged in the region. Bob Hayton PS There will be more photos next month Cheers Editor. 18
