Editor’s Snippet Hi All It was great to see the beautiful weather for the Labour Weekend break. A little tinkering and a little fishing is always good for the soul. It was great to see so many people at the recent AGM. A new committee was appointed and several proposals were voted on thus enabling them to proceed for the betterment of our Club. The new positions are in the back of the magazine. I did not seek the Editors position this year having given it 3 year+. Hugh McInally was appointed Editor. I wish him well for the new club short year. The year has almost run its course, what a year of interruptions, on again off again with Covid. We are pretty lucky by world standards to be free enough to go about activities mostly without the fear of covid. As a final huge “Thank You “ must go to those people who send articles in for publication and to those businesses who advertise in the Venture—A HUGE THANK YOU. All members are reminded to use these services as “they support us so in tern we should support them”. The annual Swapmeet is coming up , Jeremy needs helper’s to run this event, PLEASE HELP IF ABLE. Keep to the left, enjoy your motoring and travel well.

C h a ir m a n ’s C h a tter CHAIRMANS REPORT NOVEMBER 2020
Thanks to all the member who attended our AGM, which was four months late. Mind you this makes it only eight months to the next AGM in June 2021. We nearly have a full committee and I am sure that the two vacancies will be filled at the next committee meeting. It is so nice to see some new faces on the committee and some important roles filled by new people. So, we can expect some new ideas. So, watch this space. I would like to give our retiring Secretary, Jan Dearlove another big THANK-YOU. She has done an amazing job over the past few years, always ready to help with all the questions and enquiries that secretaries receive. I was very pleased that she was one of the two people voted as “Clubman of the year”, well done Jan. The most important decision of the AGM was the vote for the building of the new Workshop. This generated lots of discussion, both for and against. Lots of questions asked and answered, then the motion was put. Voting was by Secret Ballot as requested by Ten members present. The result was that the motion was carried, so now the building process starts. The first step is applying for a building consent. This will happen very soon so again watch this space as regular updates will appear in your magazine. I am sure that most of you will be like Marcia and I and be glad when this year is over. Well I have good news for you, the year is coming to an end, only two months and we can celebrate Christmas, followed by New Years Eve. At that point it will be goodbye to 2020 and hello 2021, which I am really hoping will be so much better than 2020. However, there is still the dreaded Covid thing hanging over our heads, so let’s keep our fingers crossed that our country stays safe. I nearly forgot to mention that I am back as Chairman for the next eight months and the country has Jacinda Ardern back for the next three years as Prime Minister. So, I feel that the Waikato Vintage Car Club and New Zealand are in good hands until the next elections. I know that not everyone will agree with me, but that is Democracy!! We have a great night coming up on the 12th December. This will be our Christmas function and the Fifty-Year Badge Presentation to Fred Rix. I would like to welcome all our new members and I hope to catch up with all of you at some club activity in the near future. So, keep smiling and keep left. Graham Pate. 4

Club Captain’s Report With our ‘on again, off again’ AGM achieved, members have good folks in nearly all committee type roles, to make us one of the better Branches. We have such a range of social and motoring activities that meet all our different thoughts. Our sections are a natural pathway to recognise fewer members are interested in large competitive rallies. Motorcyclists are going from strength to strength as are the Wednesday Wanderers and I am sure the Road Runners with their classis will make our third section as good as the others. Sections largely ‘look after themselves’ needing little support from the Club Committee. Looking at our Calendar, the upcoming Vintage Veteran weekend at Matamata is well worth members coming along to see oldies their polished brass showing off to the ModelT’s. Our rally will be part of an open weekend at the Matamata Tower Museum.
Our
Swapmeet will be the first (I think) after the National lock-down so will be well worth supporting. December has Club runs for bikes and cars as well as a Pot Luck Dinner. The Wednesday Wander will be different in December with Wanderers showing their cars to Resthaven residents. It has been a pleasure to have been ‘some use’ to our Club. I know Bozy will have no trouble doing a better job at being your Club Captain. Terry Thank you Terry for your continued input and a strong year as Club Captain. Your efforts and passion do not go unnoticed. Keep an eye on the future up coming events as I am sure there will be some that inspire you. Bozy
Motorcycle Motor Cycle Section Our run on the 20th September was a great success, thanks to Dick for opening up his garages so we could view his wonderful cars, to Terry for the lunch and for the 10 or so members of the Classic m/c club who come along. At the time of writing this article we have a very good entry for our run a Saturday the 17 th to Tokoroa to see Murry’s finished plane which is now in a hanger at the local aerodrome. I don’t think it is flying yet, but it will be great to see it all assembled. More on how we got on in next months Venture. I now have entries for the 40th Auckland Rally which is on Saturday the 21 st November. The start is at Ramarama and I have been advised the it is all on country roads away from the Auckland traffic. Please let me know if you would like an entry form. Our December Social run is being organised by Bob which will be on the 13th December. We will be going to Graeme Blackstock in Te Awamutu who has a collection of cars and bikes, more on times etc nearer the time. I heard a very good story about an Auckland member who had just restored an old H/D. All went well for a few short runs but it had the habit of the engine suddenly stopping, not good in the Auckland traffic. All the obvious thing were checked but it would start again at the first kick. Still this problem kept occurring which was very frustrating. He was out with a group of friends and it continued to stop a couple of times but always restarted. On stopping for lunch on route he turned up, and was asked, hows it going? he replied all is fine, the beers are on me tonight.Why they asked? because the fault was my trouser leg was being sucked into the carburettor inlet!!! The moral of the story is, it is often the smallest things that can cause the problems. All for now Safe Riding Peter

Te Toto Gorge Lookout Sunday 13 August 2020 Thank you to Terry Pidduck for organising this day out. It had been 25 weeks since Covid-19 had entered our vocabularies and about the same time since I had driven an old car – well nearly, but they do all have a rego regardless of a WOF or not! Contemplating a nice day out to Raglan the 36 Chev Convertible was extracted from the back of the shed and went to the warrant shop Saturday morning. Sunday was a bit chilly and gloomy so Jenny wasn’t keen on going topless but Marcia Pate did. We met at a very busy family orientated café at Whatawhata. This is worth a visit if you hadn’t been, obviously good food and a few shops – very popular that morning. We left in the drizzling rain which made even Marcia get her top on rather than get the Russian Hat wet. Some of us went over Old Mountain Road which, as always, was spectacular, remote and a bit rough and dusty in places. It is the long way round. We arrived at the Raglan Domain Camp Ground where everyone enjoyed a good natter and some very good fish and chips. We were not the only Car Club there with the American Car Club from Hamilton parked not far from us, probably 15 cars. There was a fly in of planes at the Aero Club and you couldn’t help but watch them coming in to land. They were pretty close and whilst we couldn’t see the whites in their eyes had they had glass bottom planes we might have seen what was in their undies. Old Mountain Road was a breeze in comparison. We had a good collection of cars, many we hadn’t seen before. I followed a Morris Traveller from the Pidduck Stable. Peter Storey met us there with a huge (new to Pete) 1920’s Buick, there was a lovely wee 1928 Model T Pickup freshly restored and piloted by Michael and Karen Cooper from Waitoa. There was a beautiful big Hupmobile Straight 8 Tourer, the Philips in their Mercedes and Vince in a very very nice MGB GT. 8
Not all of us ventured out to the Te Toto Gorge but I am glad I did. I had never been past the Manu Bay Point at Raglan and was surprised at the amount of dwellings on the Whanga Coast Road. It is metal, narrow and winding road almost single width with no power and many dwellings, sheds and structures with various forms of solar and wind power. Probably a lot of cropping too. It was about 8km to the Te Toto Gorge Lookout which is quite spectacular. There is a lot of nothing out there and it was drizzling rain so land of the long white cloud came to mind. We walked down to the cantilevered viewing platform i.e. Cave Creek – it was a long way down but ruggedly beautiful and I was pleased I went. We got back to reality with a coffee at the “Tongue in Groove” back in Raglan Township. That was signing in, sitting apart, using that stuff on your hands! No we didn’t, we all sat together in one big bubble and it was great to have finally had a day out in the old car again.

Club Night 11th November Martin Bennett built a hotrod which was based on a model Rod he had as a child. He took the completed Rod to USA, where he attended several Car Shows with the car. He is bringing the car and his story to us on Club night.

The Shed is coming ! Today saw the Shed Building Contract with Total Span signed. It is expected that early in the New Year we will see things starting on- site. The first step is the Building Consent for the project. This will be prepared and submitted with Waipa Council by Total Span with some input required from VCC. Once granted the Consent should contain any special conditions required and at this point we can start by calling in the promised assistance. with excavation, slab preparation and concrete work. TotalSpan have been contracted to supply and erect the building to a shell only stage, ready for any internal work to occur such as electrical, plumbing and fitting out the building. to suit. As we get the Shed under way it is proposed to do a monthly update of progress in the Venture and to the Committee at the Monthly meeting . If anyone has gear, materials or is able supply any components would they please contact the Shed Committee or the Club Chairman. .

Joke A hip young man goes out and buys a 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider. It is the best convertible sports car, costing about $250,000. He takes it out for a spin and while stopping for a red light, an old man on a moped, wearing an open face crash helmet (looking about 70 years old) pulls up next to him. The old man looks over the sleek, shiny red surface of the car and asks, “What kind of car ya’ got there, sonny?” The young man replies, “A 2001 Ferrari 360 Spider. They cost about a quarter of a million dollars!” “That’s a lot of money,” says the old man, shocked. “Why does it cost so much?” “Because this car can do over 200 miles an hour!” states the cool dude proudly. The moped driver asks, “Can I take a look inside?” “Sure,” replies the owner. So the old man pokes his head in the window and looks around. his moped, the old man says, “That’s a pretty nice car, all right!”

Just then the light changes so the guy decides to show the old man what his car can do. He floors it, and within 30 seconds the speedometer reads 220 mph. Suddenly, he notices a dot in his rear view mirror. It seems to be getting closer! He slows down to see what it could be and suddenly, whhhoooossshhh! Something whips by him, going much faster! “What on earth could be going faster than my Ferrari?!” the young man asks himself. Then, ahead of him, he sees a dot coming toward him. Whoooooosh! It goes by again, heading the opposite direction! And it almost looked like the old man on the moped! “Couldn’t be,” thinks the guy. “How could a moped outrun a Ferrari?!” Again, he sees a dot in his rear view mirror! Whooooosh Ka-BbblaMMM! The moped plows into the back of his car, demolishing the rear end. The young man jumps out, and it IS the old man!!! Of course, the moped and the old man are hurting for certain. He runs up to the old man and says, “You gotta tell me how you got that thing to be faster than my Ferrari !” The old man looks up and replies, “OK..., but first, unhook my suspenders from your side-view mirror, will ya?”
